Lester Crowned Batter of the Month in April

When Joe Lester stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

The young Brooklyn center fielder posted a .421 batting average with 11 home runs, 30 RBIs and scored 23 runs. Lester also worked pitchers for 7 walks to post a .457 on-base percentage.

Lúcio Santos earned April's Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League by reeling off a .416 average, going 47 for 113 with 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

The soon-to-be free agent was hitting with great urgency in an effort to bolster his asking price in the Hammersmith clubhouse and around the rest of the league.

Kal Wins CL Top Pitcher Award

Sun-woo Kal's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 3-1 in April, the 29-year-old Cleveland hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 28 in 46 innings, logged an ERA of 0.98 and allowed opponents to hit .169 against him.

Veteran Diego García put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Toronto Marlboros, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

García racked up a 5-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.91 ERA over 33 innings and striking out 30.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Fernando Chávez's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Leduc first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .364 with 4 doubles, no triples and no home runs. Chávez also scored 11 times and drove in 7 runs.

Norberto Garza is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Montreal hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .347 average with 25 hits, 4 home runs and 13 RBIs.

CL Announces Outstanding Batter Award

Jesús Martínez battered Continental League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 26-year-old Martínez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Martínez hit .359 with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 18 runs.

This season Martínez is hitting .325 with 8 home runs.


Rivera Named RL Batter of the Month

Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Ramón Rivera can still get it done in Front Office Offseason League. In fact, the 30-year-old left fielder for Toronto was named the Republic League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In May he batted .385 with 7 home runs, 28 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Rivera is hitting .343 in 2190 with 42 RBIs and 11 home runs.

Apex Starter Wins May's Pitcher Award

Eduardo Velásquez hated to see May turn to June.
And who could blame him?
The 29-year-old hurler piled up 4 wins and 1 loss for the Assassins last month and won the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for his efforts.

Velásquez stymied opposing batters on 27 base hits and a .180 batting average. He rang up 43 strikeouts in 42.1 innings of work, surrendered 7 walks and fashioned a sparkling 1.49 ERA.

This season-to-date, Velásquez has fashioned a 6-3 mark and 3.07 ERA in 73.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .214 against him and he has logged 72 strikeouts.


RL Selects Herrera May's Best Pitcher

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jorge Herrera still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 34-year-old starter for Omaha was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 6 wins and no losses with 37 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 1.30 ERA in 41.2 innings of work.

This year Herrera has worked 77 innings with 58 strikeouts en route to a 8-3 record and 2.45 ERA.

Pedro Ordóñez earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Halifax left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Ordóñez hit .314 with 3 home runs, 12 RBIs and 18 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

To date Ordóñez has chalked up a .285 average with 4 home runs, driven in 21 runs and scored 29 times.


May's Spotlight Falls on Rookie Star

A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Sergio Ortíz just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 22-year-old second baseman for Toronto hit .326 with 30 hits, no home runs and no RBI. He also logged 2 walks and compiled a .340 on-base percentage.

A look at his season totals shows Ortíz with no home runs, .309 BA, .343 OBP, 7 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

Cortéz Snares CL Top Batter Award in June

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old Luis Cortéz put together a solid offensive month for Leduc and was crowned June's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .348 with 8 home runs, 26 RBIs and 19 runs scored.



This year Cortéz is hitting .290 with 91 hits, 13 home runs, 45 RBIs and has scored 35 runs.


Santos Brings Home RL Batter of Month Honor

There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Lúcio Santos helped his contract negotiations by nabbing June's Republic League Batter of the Month honors.

The Hammersmith right fielder put together a .397 batting average with 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Santos continues at this brisk pace.

Thus far this season Santos is hitting .379 with 19 home runs, 67 RBIs and 66 runs scored. He has 132 hits in 348 at-bats and has played in 84 games.

Cyclones García June's Top Hurler

Jesús García has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Cyclones bullpen ace collected 8 saves and 19 strikeouts in 14 innings, holding the opposition to a .146 average and posting a 0.64 ERA and a 3-0 record.

So far this season, García has put up these stats: 40 relief appearances, 19 saves, 42.1 IP, 42 strikeouts, and 0.64 ERA. His won-lost record is 4-2, and the opposition is hitting .155 against him.


Riverhawks Hurler Named June's #1 Starter

Question: Who was the #1 pitcher in the Republic League in June?
Answer: That would be Freddy Vidro of the Hartford Riverhawks.
He excelled with a 4-0 mark and a 0.68 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 39.2 innings, fanned 24 and held opposing teams to a .169 average. That's exactly why the Republic League scribes voted him the Pitcher of the Month.

For this year Vidro has chalked up 9 wins and 3 losses in 16 starts with 62 strikeouts in 110 innings and a 3.03 ERA.

Youngster Pedro Ordóñez emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Halifax deserved the honor, batting .306 with 4 home runs and 21 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ordóñez enjoy the limelight.

Presently Ordóñez is batting .292 with 8 home runs and 42 RBIs. He has played in 79 games and scored 52 times.

FOOL News: The All-Star Game Rosters Have Been Announced

Nothing is for certain about the 2190 Front Office Offseason League All-Star Game. It might be dominated by top-notch pitching performances. Or it could turn into a home run derby. Who knows? Pitch by pitch, inning by inning, the game could feature a little of both -- six strikeouts in a row by a nasty southpaw -- or a 3-homer day for some superstar slugger -- plus great catches, thrills, chills and spills -- all the great and the unexpected things that can happen in a baseball game.

Orlando Castro Winner in Continental League

Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Orlando Castro is no exception. The Brooklyn third baseman capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Continental League.

In July Castro hit .329 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

This season Castro is batting at a .289 clip with 23 home runs and 64 RBIs.


RL's #1 Batter Announced
Sunday, August 1st, 2190
Roberto Ramírez of the Bees hit .430 in July with 5 home runs, 18 RBIs and 15 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 35-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise.

Currently Ramírez has 22 home runs and a .334 batting average.

Kal Snags CL Top Hurler Trophy

The elite pitcher this past month in the Continental League was Sun-woo Kal of the Cleveland Cyclones. He stood head and shoulders above the rest, finishing July with an extraordinary 3-0 record and a 1.13 ERA.

The Cyclones star hurler made 6 starts and surrendered 18 hits in 40 innings. He struck out 32 and walked 8.

In 27 starts this season Kal has rung up a 11-7 record and a 2.47 ERA.


Herrera Wins Best RL Pitcher

The premier pitcher this past month in the Republic League was Jorge Herrera of the Omaha Bees. He was one mighty tough pitcher, finishing July with a sensational 4-0 record and a 1.63 ERA.

The Bees star made 6 starts and surrendered 22 hits in 38.2 innings. He struck out 36 and walked 8.

This season Herrera has gone 14-5 with an ERA of 2.43, posting 121 strikeouts in 155.1 innings.

Shortstop Honored by CL

The top-ranked Continental League rookie in July was Noblesville's shortstop Joe Gunter.

Last month he played in 23 games and hit .295 with 4 doubles, 2 triples, and 6 home runs. Gunter also scored 11 times and drove in 11 runs.

So far this season Gunter has hit .240 with 13 home runs, 47 RBIs and and scored 42 times.


Montreal First Baseman July's Best Rookie

It was an excellent month for Norberto Garza. He really swung into action! The first baseman for the Montreal Royals was named July's best newcomer in the Republic League.

He captured the honor by hitting .347 with 25 hits, 3 home runs, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

The Continental League has given Ryan Joyce the Batter of the Month Award.

In August, the Halifax right fielder starred with a .457 batting average, 3 home runs and 15 RBIs. Joyce also had 23 walks, posted a .556 on-base percentage and scored 14 times.

Joyce is batting .359 this year with 5 home runs, 58 RBIs and 72 runs scored. He has 165 hits in 459 at-bats.


Martínez Crowned Top RL Hitter in August

José Martínez is in the final year of his contract with Colorado and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 22 games in August the 31-year-old second baseman ripped Republic League pitchers for a .341 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

If Martínez keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

This year Martínez has hit at a .281 clip with 62 RBIs, 18 home runs and 70 runs scored.

There was nobody finer on the mound in August and Cristóbal Ortega cruised to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today.

He was 4-0 with a 1.63 ERA while piling up 19 strikeouts in 38.2 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .203 batting average.

Checking out his stats for the season, Ortega has notched 13 wins and 6 losses in 26 starts, 2.04 ERA and struck out 87 batters in 176.1 innings.

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Steve Hyde still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in August. The 29-year-old starter for Tokyo was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 34 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 0.70 ERA in 38.2 innings of work.

Currently Hyde has a 13-7 won-lost record in 27 starts with a 2.45 ERA. He also has 152 strikeouts in 198.2 innings.
