The Thread where we talk about Amazon Go and/or future tech

Introducing Amazon Go and the world’s most advanced shopping technology - YouTube

Oh my God.

I showed this to my wife last night and after about 10 seconds she was laughed, she thought it was a parody. I told her no, its real. Then as the commercial goes on she asks a few questions, then seconds later, it answers the questions she has. By the end, we both agreed we love the future and Amazon can have all the money we have left that they don't currently get.

Amazon rules the world. Between them and Google, they will eliminate a lot of low paid jobs in the future.

This is a very long but really interesting read on artificial intelligence and where things are going. It's from early 2015.

That's a great article. I would also recommend everything from Ray Kurzweil as he's been 86% accurate on the what and the when of technological innovation since the early 90s. For lighter, fun fare I would suggest Futurism.com.

The world is going to go through some rapid changes in the very near future and I don't think anything close to pure capitalism will be adequate to deal with it.

Here's a quick video from Futurism on a drive thru market concept.

Given the frequency of how I spot mispriced items, only a damned idiot with too much money would sign on for this afaic.

Mispriced items on Amazon? Or at your local supermarket?

If it's the latter, I trust the former's tech just a touch more.

I meant the latter, yes.

But presumably they would be involved in this. I mean, Amazon isn't taking control of the entire operation, right?

They've already started opening physical bookstores of their own and it appears they've got a test store for this concept already open in Seattle.

Well I wouldn't put it past them . Their goal was to sell every product in the world and they've come damn close.

But in theory, even if Amazon doesn't expand to take over every supermarket in the world, companies could continue to operate the brick and mortar locations while running on Amazon Web Services (or some equivalent) which would be a pretty solid way of controlling inventory.

This is 100% Amazon, not an add-on to existing grocery stores.

Then I did indeed misunderstand it.

So Amazon is going into the brick-and-mortar business?

Definitely dipping their toe into it. With both this grocery store and some bookstores.

Well I'll be damned.

I made it through over half the video, didn't glean that from it, so I'll accept the responsibility of being mistaken.

Have you shown her this one? Google's crazy enough I was questioning whether it could actually be real until the web searches at the end

So how does Amazon Go differentiate between you and another user who is right beside you shopping?

Unless you two are shadowing each other the entire time, I imagine having the app up and running as you're shopping will play a part in that.

This has a bit more info about the store.
