Draft-A-Decade FOF2K7 Dynasty (Spin-Off Of One and Done Challenge)

So, I had so much fun with the One And Done Challenge that I'd like to play a long-term career out in a similar fashion. For those who are unfamiliar, the idea of the One And Done is to draft players and sign rookies from one class, never making any new signings, and play out a career with that group of players.

Given that the careers people are doing are lasting roughly a decade, I'll build my team from the rookie pool in the first year of each decade, starting with 2001. I'll run a 2000 season designed to go 0-16, cut everyone, and start in 2001. In 2001, I will take 70 rookies to training camp. My 53-man roster must come from that pool of 70, and that will be my roster from 2001-2010. For the first decade, I will trade picks forward every year and build up a bunch for 2011. (I suspect that will be too easy, though, and by 2021 I'll probably just use the 2021, 2022, and 2023 picks to go after the 2021 class, but that's a long way off.)

At any rate, in order to preserve continuity, if I get to the point of having an illegal roster prior to the 2011/2021/2031/2041 draft, I must do the following:

1. Sign the worst rookie FA from a *different* position than the one I need, but of the right weight.
2. Position-switch him twice into the correct position.

In other words, I'll just fill my roster with a guy who completely sucks to begin with, and may well be rated 0/0 after the two switches take place. He's only on the team to preserve the roster. Period.

I don't really like any of the QBs in the class, but I LOVE the two stud WRs, and like RB Kobeck a lot, too. I trade around and position us at 6/7/8 in Round One as I watch other players go. Seeing how studly some of these remaining guys are, I end up trading up during the draft to get a CB, too. Here's the first round:

1(6) Grady Giaramito SE 209 6.7 7.0 4.28 27 19 6.86 8/7 60 52% VU 41 52 This guy should help make any QB look good.

As the second round begins, I have 2(1) and 2(6). My favorite remaining player is another CB, a guy I'm thrilled to get early in the second, and there's also a stud safety. If he falls to 2(6), we're in very good shape in the secondary.

LOOKING AHEAD...
  • I've got my eye on a pedestrian QB who I assume I wait to grab with the 5(1) pick.
  • There are three good-looking TEs. I'd love to have one of them. Once the other two are gone, I'll trade up immediately to get the third. I really don't have a major preference between the three of them.

Slot Name Pos Wt Gr Adj 40 Sol Str Agi BrJ Drill Dev Int Cur1 Fut1 Comments
2(1) Daryl Bullock RCB 183 5.8 6.0 4.47 36 13 6.90 8/8 43 58% UR 32 49 A great bookend for Gepner, no doubt.
2(6) Shawn Van Pelt SS 188 6.2 5.8 4.42 41 21 7.17 8/4 57 43% HtR 28 49 If I'm right about this guy, I will be *VERY* happy with the DBs

Unfortunately, all three TEs went in the second round, and I didn't have enough picks left to trade up to grab the last one.

Note that for position-switched guys, the ratings I have listed are post-switch.

70 guys under contract now, heading into camp. FYI, I switched 5th-round pick SLB Moorehead to MLB.

So, we had an outstanding draft, but a rough time with the undrafted players. The best news, though, was being right about QB Todd Farley. He looks like he could be a 50+ QB.

Midway through season one, all signs are that we chose well with the offensive weapons, but the defense is just plain dreadful. They haven't come close to stopping the run yet.

I suspect we would have had an even better year on offense had Ian Morris not missed 10 games with turf toe. All signs are that once the defense comes around in a couple of years or so, this should be a pretty good decade.

Oh...RB Kobeck and MLB Jackson win OROY and DROY. Neither is a huge surprise, although I think I would have voted for my QB, Todd Farley. He had one of the better rookie years for *any* QB I've ever had--let alone one starting with a team comprised of all rookies.

I send DE Dimitrenko to summer league. He's got the most green of any of my starters.

2002 OFFSEASON

FA1
  • QB Farley creeps a point to 25/37
  • The starting WRs both get +4s .
  • Undrafted FA RG Sedrick Flannery gets another +4, to 27/31. He looks like he might be a player.
  • As per expectation, the starting corners and safeties all crept another 2 to 4 points.
FA2

I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract.

As your starting quarterback last season, I believe I had a solid season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.

Neither one of those is exactly a shocker, and neither wants anything that I can't afford with ease at this point.

TRAINING CAMP
Biggest change is to G Flannery. He adds 3 more points. He's already +12.

WR Morris was 2nd Team All Pro. Our defensive front is horrendous still, but with one more season of development of the offense, I suspect teams won't be able to run against us so much.

Nope. Only 5 wins. We're no longer the worst team against the run, but we need to open it up a little more, I think.

Nothing more than +/- 2 points. The usual suspects put up +1s and +2s.

G Flannery makes it to 50/50, +28 overall. C Ellingson also gets a +5. The o-line ought to really come together this year.

Nope.

And I think I may have figured out part of what's wrong. My game plan called for very low blitz pickup, and Farley doesn't have great sense rush. It's not bad, though, so he shouldn't be averaging 47 sacks and 80 knockdowns a year, as he has.

Anyway, looking forward to next season and correcting this. We really should be scoring more points, and I think that may be why we weren't.

Same story in '07. Fairly solid offense, porous defense.

A wise man would pay more attention to the little details. I overlooked the sacks because of simming quickly. I also overlooked the fact that Farley is the career fumbles leader....by a very wide margin. As in, he has 85, and #2 has 58. And #2 has played 8 seasons to his seven.

Ouch. That would further help explain why we're usually near the top in both ypc and ypa, but don't score a ton. Too late to salvage the decade now, but I'm going with another QB next year.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I really wish I'd made the QB change *BEFORE* most of my guys' skills started to decline. Things fell in to place pretty nicely.

The hidden fumbles and Avoid INT ratings are one of my favorite aspects of the game. I actually passed on a trade for a high rated QB in WOOF because he'd thrown alot of INT's.

Two more retirements--a backup RB and backup FB. Still ok.

Four retirements push us down to 46 players, and only five defensive linemen. I move my worst offensvie linemen, 19/19 Gary Pineda, to the DL.

Oh, and incidentally, the trading forward of picks every year is going to make 2011-2020 insanely easy, I suspect, but since I've spent the time on it, I might as well go with it. I'll probably end up using only 2021/2022/2023 picks for the 2021 draft.

And now we move into the "turkey shoot" part of the career. I won't bore us with the details of the 2011 draft. Suffice it to say that I have a ton of picks carried forward. In the future, I'll do xxx1, xxx2, xxx3 picks only in all likelihood, but I'm curious to see what kind of team one might be able to build from one draft with a buttload of good picks. I'll go through this decade pretty quickly.

Heh. I've got so many picks that I probably can't afford them all under the cap. There may be some strategy involved here after all: figuring out who I can trade down to get, so I can afford.

My first move is to pare down the carryover players. I only want two types of players:

1. guys still rated 55/55 or better--ones who can get it done on the field for another year or 2
2. veteran exception mentors

The former category contains WRs Giaramito (76/76) and Morris (69/69), G Flanner (58/58) and SS VanPelt (56/56). No need to go over the cheap mentors.

Heh. Forget that idea. Not enough cap room. I cut everyone, and start over with rookies.

Upon further thought....there's no possible way I'll be able to afford to keep a team as loaded as this one would be for ten years, is there? Again, I'm so far down this road in terms of time investment, I might as well see it through.

If, as I suspect, this team gets into impossible cap trouble around the 5th season or so, I'll just QuikSim to 2021 and pick it back up there.

FickleDog strikes:

This is going to be too easy to be worth making a bunch of depth chart changes for injuries and reports and whatnot. I'm going to see how the team does just for my own interest, but I'll be moving very rapidly through this decade. Next report here will probably be the 2021 draft.

Good call. Won the whole shebang in only year 2 and RB1 had 2,583 yards from scrimmage. The scary thing is that this isn't really an exploit. I was getting less value in all of the trades. I would think that this could be done every ten years with stunning success, even though the AI teams would get better value in nearly every trade. *shurg*

I'll probably give a stats report after 2020, just for fun.
