OT: Fantasy Baseball Trade Offer
OK. Here is the situation. This is a league with my friends on my baseball team. I have 5 Allstar OFers in Vlad, Magglio Ordonez, Bobby Abreu, Lance Berkman, and Carlos Beltran. I am lacking a catcher and another top Pitcher. My catcher is Toby Hall. He has been decent just not a top guy.
OK to the offered trade... Today I was offered Pedro and Jason Kendall for Vlad Guerrero. The kid I am trading with has several top pitchers in Mark Prior, Pedro, Matt Morris, and Oswalt. I was wondering if you guys think Pedro is the best out of the bunch of Pitchers, and what you guys think of the deal as a whole? |

I would take Pedro for sure but I would ask for a little better chip than Kendall. Pedro has the constant specter of injury and Kendall is toast.

Kendall is pretty decent pitcher, but ask for Mark Prior as the pitcher instead. Pedro gets injured all the time.

People are always so quick to label players with the injury prone tag. Pedro has only missed significant time once in the past 8 years. He has pitched atleast 29 games and 200 innings in 7 of the last 8 years. So I wouldn't say he gets injured all the time. |

I would much rather have Pedro than the young Prior. As for the trade I think its pretty even, but I would counter and try to get more pitching. How about offering Vlad and a good pitcher for 2 of his big 4 pitchers(Morris, Oswalt, Pedro, Prior) and Kendall. Try your best to get Pedro as one of the two if you can but any two will do. If he doesnt go for that, another thing you could consider is to offer Berkman for one of those 4 pitchers and Kendall. Basically if he really wants Vlad you should be able to get 2 of thoose pitchers somehow. Or if he just wants OF help you should be able to get one of the 4 (Oswalt or Prior?) without giving up Vlad. As you can see I tend to make trades more complex than they should be... |

Pedro probably has more talent than any other pitcher in baseball... Living in Boston though, here is what I would fear in the trade..
Boston's bullpen has already blown two of Pedro's games on him. If your league is big on wins, you are probably going to see Pedro miss out on a few more through the year because of Boston's closer situation. The perception of Pedro's durability. I am not going to argue whether Pedro is injury prone or not.. What affects Pedro's fantasy value as much this year is the perception from alot of people that Pedro is injury prone, thus last year Boston's management babied him a little more, resting his arm more, not letting him go deep in pitch counts, etc.. This means less starts for him even if not injured. It also means more risk of Boston's bullpen blowing the lead. Clearly you have a wealth of Outfielders, so giving up one, even as good as Vlad for a pitcher as dominating as Pedro probably could be a win-win situation. I dont think kendall is better than Toby Hall though. |

I am not sure that this is a trade in your favor. I will assume that this is a 5 X 5 type scoring system. First off, I will agree that with the others that Kendall is not really much of an upgrade over Hall. Then you have Vlad for Pedro. Vlad is much better in my opinion due to the fact that he will affect all five of the batter categories. Pedro will only have an emphasis on four. I feel that Vlad is to important for your team even with the other outfielders you have. You should, however, be able to trade one of your other outfielders for one of his other starting pitchers. Good luck, either way you go.
