Question Help Me Justify Buying The Game

I like to play text sims in a fictional universe since playing with known players takes a few seasons before you cycle through all of the breakout rookies and second-year players it would be easy to target.

So my question to you veterans of the FOF series is - How do you get to know all of the players not only on your team, but in the league? I tend to make comparison with other games I play, and so I find the Media Interaction in a game like Championship Manager makes all the difference in getting me "acquainted" with the league. Same with the News Section in OOTP5.

I've never found the equivalent in FOF (and I purchased two previous versions of the game!). But maybe I am missing something? So what do you do when you start a new career? (By the way - I read the excellent post that talks about the actions to take when you start a new simulation... but that doesn't really give you a feel for all of the players, does it?).

Please help! I really would like to get into this game again, but I am having a hard time getting past my perception of major functionality missing in the game.
Thanks!

There is a "scouting report" that you click on before every game. During the game, you get to know the other team intimately if you call the plays. You can also check the "green page" for rookies making an impact, the statistical leaders page, and a number of other places too. The information is there, it just isn't all written out like it's in a newspaper.

For my money, this version of FOF is the best ever. I don't know how many big changes have been made from the older versions, but all the changes have added up to a really cool sim. With the added plus that now you *can* create your own fictional universe putting the teams wherever you want.

It's cool!

Maybe try writing a dynasty report... many (myself included) seem to find that doing so adds a lot more accountbility and immersion to your career. You'll find a healthy group of contributors and readers in that section of this forum. Might be worth a shot.

FOF, as compared to the others you have mentioned, requires a bit more leg-work to get the same feel, but as far as a pure simulation of a game, it is the best out there.

For me, I would like the interaction of CM, but American Football is my favorite sport by far, and I really, really don't like Baseball or Soccer, so my choice was less arduous.

Jim is unashamed for making the FrontOfficeExcel 2004, however, he is adding more and more to each version. Try the demo.

I get to know the other players by asking them out on dates and dispensing with small talk.

I seem to remember you not understanding why another poster asked about the same question a few weeks ago. Am I wrong?

FOF will increase the size of your penis by three inches! And give you a mortgage at 3.7%. And Protect your computer from all sorts of nasty spam. And grow hair back on your head.

one new feature is called the "green" page, which ranks the top twenty first and second year players. Looking at this really helps me get to know the future stars. This was a big help to me in learning the key players throughout the league. Also, the new rookie contract status reoport gives you an easy way to scrool through all the pics in the order they were picked, so you get to know them. This were two big inprovements in this area. It's not helping my penis grow, but my pianist is two inches taller.

I right-click on all the weeks' games on the fixtures page and quickly get the statistical leaders for each game. In addition, I always check "Player of the week" for both offense and defense, which help immersion. With this, I could project that Byron Leftwich should approach Marino's record of 5084 yds and 48 TDs passing (he slowed down a bit towards the end, but finished just short of 5000 yds and got 46 TDs).

you know, I'm not the only bald guy on this board. I seem to remember GrantDawg not having much hair.

Then again, he's got God on his side.

Oh, also the fact that if we want Jim to be able to make FOF2005 and beyond, we need to buy his games.

Agreed.

Also, it's only $35. That's a dinner out for two, or you can look at it as only a little over half the price of another computer game...so if you get at least half the value out of it, then it's a great deal

Also the game keeps a database of ever players stats even after they retire. Twenty seasons down the road you can compare the progress of your 12 year QB vet to the all-time league leaders in passing or check to see how your 5th year stud LB ranks on your all-time team sacks list.

You can easily the the first pick in every draft, pull up their ratings with a click, and view their career stats with another click.

You can pull up a view of the top first year players (and second year QB's) and check out their ratings or rookie stats with another click.

At any time in the season you can pull up a list of draft picks and check to see who is holding out.

From your roster page you can easily see which players on your team get along and who hates who.

For every coach, scout, or coordinator you can easily pull up their year by year stats. Want to hire a new 55 year old head coach? You can quickly see he got his start as the OC in San Francisco where he won a Super Bowl before getting his first head coaching gig in Seattle.

Can't chose between two players in the draft? Check out how aggressive their agents are with a single click and take the one more likely to sign.

Want to know where a player is from? Click on his hometown and it brings up a nice map showing his hometown and the distance to each professional team.
