SLOP Fantasy Trade Machine

Sooo...it's another off-season in SLOP. You know what that means OVERPAID CONTRACTS! WOO! But for the rest of you, it means deals you ought to be making! There are so many bad contracts floating around the league, that you find teams trying to deal them for a semblance of something, because sure you can release a guy...but not when it means you won't get anything back and can't find anyone on the FA market to replace him. And this year's FAs are largely big ticket.

Soo...what's a guy to do? It's hard to know, because it's free agency and teams can ink deals. But we're going to scour the waves a bit and see what sorts of deals we can orchestrate and come back from time to time with newer ideas.

Kauai-Washington

RATIONALE: Washington isn't going to be good this year. Kauai has no real farm system to speak of, but it did pick up two FFPs last year. It's a team full of aging guys with a bit of young talent with whom already won a title. But their small window is already closing. Meanwhile, Washington did a small-market version of what Kauai did and has nothing to show for it thus far.

This deal would give them a chance to start rebuilding. It'd give Kauai one last chance at the gusto without taking on a ton of payroll and frankly, while it seems like Washington is giving up "too much" the guys they're giving up are all going to be free agents soon and it's not as if the team is going anywhere.

You could say "but Kauai spent all that money on those FFPs, that's a waste? Except it's not, because they basically went and got prospects that they'd never have gotten in a draft and now can use them as trade bait to get themselves back into a shot at a 2nd title in 3rd years, before their good players all get too old, he has to blow the whole thing up and has little to show for it.

Kauai would trade:

2nd round pick (2.1)
SP Roger Bullock
SP Tristan Dixon
2B Wyatt Ball
SP Lusala Chaga

Washington would trade:
SP Tommy Wallis
MR Amari Gray
LF Rodrigo Flores
RF Carlos Palacios

San Diego-Lake Placid

This one is easy. Lake Placid gets the value of a 1st rounder in a rebuilding year, San Diego gets a 1st baseman to help them get back to the playoffs.

San Diego would send:
1st round (1.12)

Lake Placid would send:
1B Johnny Witt

Memphis-Washington

RATIONALE: This would give Washington another draft pick. Memphis can use McCann's dumped corpse to pick up another starter in FA, Ricardo can bolster their bullpen and Washington gets a lottery pick in a year where they're trying hard to rebuild.

Memphis WOULD SEND:

1st round pick (1.7)

Washington WOULD SEND:

CL Chris Ricardo
CL Bob McCann
$17m in cap space

SHEM CREEK-CLEVELAND

Ok so it's Day 2. Maybe you slowsies will get inspired.

RATIONALE: Shem Creek capitalized on a weak NL last year and almost snuck into the playoffs under EVERYONE's nose (including their MIA owner) but ultimately missed out. Anyway, they've got a few prospects and a window that they ought to exercise thanks to a few key signings last year that have them near the doorstep of serious contention in a still wide-open Nationwide League. Cleveland is rebuilding and needs some pieces to move that process along.

This is one of those deals where both teams would wince a bit, but that's precisely what makes it good. Shem Creek is dealing pieces that won't be ready by the time its current core is playing at its best for guys who are ready and Cleveland would be dealing for guys who can make them better down the road, getting a low lottery pick in the process and shedding a bit of cap space in the process a la Maestas deal.

CLEVELAND would trade:

SP Diego Carrasco
SP Ron Prehn
2B Felix Maestas

SHEM CREEK would trade:
SP Tom Maltman
1st round pick (1.10)
2nd round pick (2.10)
SP Dusty Disotell (AA)
SS Tom Irwin
