Weston Garners CL Batter of the Month Award

For the month of April, Max Weston of the Washington Freedom has really worn out the sweet spot on his bat. He has assaulted, used and abused Continental League pitchers to the tune of a .347 batting average and was honored as the hottest hitter of the month today.

Weston went 35 for 101 last month with 6 walks. The right fielder tallied 9 home runs, 28 RBIs, 19 runs scored and compiled a .376 on-base percentage.


RL's Top Hitter Announced

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old José Grafals put together a solid offensive month for Spring and was crowned April's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .356 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

April's Top Hurler is García

Juan García left little doubt in the minds of Continental League officials that he should be named April's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance.

"I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said García. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."

The 28-year-old tossed 34.2 innings of quality baseball -- going 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 36 strikeouts.


Republic League Announces April's Top Pitcher

It was a very good month for Marcos Rentería in April. The 37-year-old veteran starter for the Cleveland Naps outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.

Rentería ran up a 4-0 record in his 5 starts during the month. In 31.2 innings he fanned 33 and recorded a 3.13 ERA.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Ryushi Higuchi's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Washington third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .290 with 6 doubles, no triples and 3 home runs. Higuchi also scored 17 times and drove in 9 runs.


Republic League Names Rookie of Month

Santiago López earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Waikiki center fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

López hit .253 with no home runs, 13 RBIs and 13 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

CL's Best Batter Picked

When guys like Omaha's George Major win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive May, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 30 hits in 97 at-bats.

The veteran left fielder hit for a .309 batting average and collected 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

On the year Major has hit .298 with 15 home runs, 38 RBIs and scored 45 runs.


García Earns May's Top Batter Prize in RL

César García battered Republic League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old García told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 23 games, García hit .363 with 7 home runs, 27 RBIs and scored 21 runs.

Currently García is hitting .333 and has collected 9 home runs, 33 RBIs and scored 24 times, while playing in 34 games.

Hernández Is May's Top Starter

When Fernando Hernández takes the mound, a London victory is usually the result. That was the the case in May.

That's why he was voted the Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

Hernández throttled league hitters the whole month with an impressive 4-0 mark and 1.80 ERA in 6 starts. The Bishops star hurler also rung up 32 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Hernández has started 10 times this year, pitched 56 innings, fanned 49 batters and walked 23. His current record is 6 wins and no losses with a 3.54 ERA.


May's RL Top Pitcher is Beach Boys Morales

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Carlos Morales still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 29-year-old starter for Waikiki was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 50 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.52 ERA in 41.1 innings of work.

This year Morales has compiled a 5-3 record with a 2.64 ERA.

Carlos Acevedo is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Havana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .309 average with 30 hits, 3 home runs and 15 RBIs.

For the season Acevedo is hitting .293, batted in 24 runs with 5 home runs and 24 runs scored.


Hartman Voted May's Best RL Rookie

A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Henry Hartman just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 24-year-old catcher for Waikiki hit .375 with 39 hits, 3 home runs and 15 RBI. He also logged 7 walks and compiled a .414 on-base percentage.

This season Hartman is swinging the bat at a .319 pace. He has hit 3 home runs and scored 24 times, while driving in 17. His on-base percentage is .359 and he has played in 50 games.

Continental League Picks June's Best Batter

The #1 hitter in the Continental League in June was Washington right fielder Max Weston. He was selected the Batter of the Month.

Weston starred with a .333 batting average, 11 home runs and 31 RBIs.

For the year Weston is batting .307 with 23 home runs.


RL Announces Best Batter Award

The vote is in and Félix Soto, the 23-year-old center fielder for Cleveland, is the winner. Today he was honored with the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

In June, Soto wowed voters with a .452 average while posting up 1 home run, 16 RBIs, 19 runs scored and a .485 on-base percentage.

On the season, Soto is batting .342 with 3 home runs and 30 RBIs. He has played in 71 games.

Tomita CL Winner, Top Hurler in June

Last month's cream of the crop on the mound was Roku Tomita of the Plantana Pirates. He captured the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for his outstanding performance in June.

Tomita started 6 games, threw 40.2 innings, yielded 32 hits and logged a 4-2 record. He put down 34 batters on strikes, walked 6 and compiled a 1.99 ERA. Opposing teams batted .215 against him.

Tomita has a 8-4 season record so far. In 16 starts, he has fanned 81 batters in 105 innings with a 3.26 ERA.


June's Best RL Hurler is Luna

Juan Luna's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 6-1 in June, the 31-year-old Ann Arbor hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 32 in 49 innings, logged an ERA of 1.84 and allowed opponents to hit .210 against him.

In 19 starts this year Luna has posted 9 wins while suffering 6 losses. He has pitched 121.1 innings, allowed 120 hits, struck out 103 and has a 3.63 ERA.

Velázquez Voted June's Rookie Trophy

Youngster Vicente Velázquez emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Washington deserved the honor, batting .302 with 2 home runs and 16 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Velázquez enjoy the limelight.

Velázquez is hitting .273 this year with 6 home runs and 41 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .348, 27 walks and scored 37 times.

Norman July's Best Bat Choice

The Continental League Batter of the Month has been chosen for July and the trophy was presented to Jaye Norman of the Omaha Bees.

He stood out this month with a .337 batting average, 34 hits and 9 home runs, along with 21 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

In 103 games this year Norman has posted a .299 average and put up these numbers: 26 home runs, 75 RBIs and 87 runs scored.

Today Dewey McMillan was voted Republic League Batter of the Month for August. During the month the 27-year-old New York shortstop compiled a .406 batting average.

Most importantly for the Legends though, he also posted 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Looking at his season stats, McMillan has compiled a .323 batting average and a .386 on-base percentage, while hitting 13 home runs and driving in 65 runs.

Manuel Ramírez of London excelled on the mound in July with a 4-0 record and was named the Pitcher of the Month in the Continental League.

Ramírez restricted opposing batters to 24 base hits and a .197 batting average. He rang up 39 strikeouts in 34 innings of work, surrendered 8 walks, and fashioned a 1.85 ERA.

Major Picks Up Best CL Batter Honors for September

Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, George Major can still get it done in FOOL-X. In fact, the 34-year-old left fielder for Omaha was named the Continental League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In September he batted .340 with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

This year Major is batting .302 with 183 hits and 38 home runs. He has scored 123 times and has batted in 119 runs.


September's Best RL Hitter is Eduardo Guzmán

Eduardo Guzmán really smoked the ball in September on his way to Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League.

The Las Vegas shortstop hit .314 with 9 home runs, 31 RBIs and 23 runs scored to round out his great month.

Currently Guzmán has 37 home runs and a .271 batting average.

CL Selects Oshima September's Top Starter

The premier pitcher this past month in the Continental League was Narihira Oshima of the Washington Freedom. He was one mighty tough pitcher, finishing September with a sensational 5-0 record and a 1.84 ERA.

The Freedom star made 6 starts and surrendered 39 hits in 44 innings. He struck out 38 and walked 5.

Oshima has made 32 starts, tossed 212.2 innings, struck out 200 batters and walked 38. His record is 14-6 with a 2.84 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .237 batting average.


RL Selects Brennan September's #1 Pitcher

Greg Brennan of the New York Legends outdistanced his peers on the mound this month. He fashioned a fine 4-0 won-lost mark and 0.25 ERA in 6 starts to get the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors.

Brennan had a very impressive September, finishing with 50 strikeouts in 36.2 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .172 average.

Presently Brennan has a 14-6 mark in 32 starts with a 3.78 ERA. He has given up 190 hits in 195.1 innings, struck out 185 and issued 57 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .254 batting average against him.

Aguilera Wins CL Rookie Award

For the last thirty days he outperformed all the other newcomers in the Continental League. So it was no surprise that St Louis's second baseman Arturo Aguilera took the Rookie of the Month honors today.

In September he hit .347 as he ran up some impressive offensive numbers. In 22 games he collected 26 hits, 3 home runs, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

On the year Aguilera is hitting .288 with 108 hits, 10 home runs, 52 RBIs, .306 OBP and has scored 42 runs.


López Nabs RL Monthly Rookie Award

Santiago López was selected as the Republic League Rookie of the Month for the excellent performance he put together last month.

In September the 25-year-old center fielder for Waikiki hit .289 with 33 hits, 1 home run and 11 RBIs. He posted an OBP of .367 and played in 28 games.

López is hitting .291 this season with 4 home runs, 74 RBIs and 102 runs scored. He has 192 hits in 659 at-bats.
