Carasquillo Snags CL Batting Honor in April
Wednesday, May 1st, 2171: Pedro Carasquillo battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Carasquillo told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 25 games, Carasquillo hit .415 with 3 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 19 runs.


Bernard Hetherington Selected April's Best Batter
Wednesday, May 1st, 2171: Bernard Hetherington of the Hammersmith Hooligans spoke softly and carried a big stick in April and was justifiably proclaimed the Republic League Batter of the Month.

The Hooligans shortstop rapped out a .404 batting average with 44 hits in 109 at-bats, drove in 15, scored 19 runs and chalked up a .488 on-base percentage.

April's Best CL Hurler is Sugimoto
Wednesday, May 1st, 2171: Naoki Sugimoto took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

The 26-year-old Brownstones starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-1 won-lost record in 0 starts. This month he fanned 25 batters in 22.1 innings and compiled a 0.40 ERA.


RL Starter of the Month Goes to Anguiana
Wednesday, May 1st, 2171: Mauro Anguiana's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 3-1 in April, the 29-year-old Omaha hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 32 in 39 innings, logged an ERA of 2.31 and allowed opponents to hit .211 against him.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Wednesday, May 1st, 2171: Francisco Montés's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Brooklyn shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .272 with 4 doubles, no triples and 3 home runs. Montés also scored 13 times and drove in 10 runs.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Wednesday, May 1st, 2171: Youngster Juan Silva emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Colorado deserved the honor, batting .347 with 1 home run and 7 runs batted in. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Silva enjoy the limelight.

Cleveland First Baseman CL's Best Batter in May
Saturday, June 1st, 2171: Steve Gray earned May's Batter of the Month honors in the Continental League by reeling off a .333 average, going 33 for 99 with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

The soon-to-be free agent was hitting with great urgency in an effort to bolster his asking price in the Cleveland clubhouse and around the rest of the league.

So far this season Gray has 13 home runs and a .319 batting average.


RL's Best Batter Selected
Saturday, June 1st, 2171: Mario Rivera of the Toronto Marlboros spoke softly and carried a big stick in May and was justifiably proclaimed the Republic League Batter of the Month.

The Marlboros first baseman rapped out a .417 batting average with 35 hits in 84 at-bats, drove in 12, scored 14 runs and chalked up a .474 on-base percentage.

On the year Rivera is hitting .342 with 50 hits, 6 home runs, 18 RBIs, .405 OBP and has scored 18 runs.

Baltimore Reliever May's Best Pitcher
Saturday, June 1st, 2171: What António Trevino of the Baltimore Gothams did to Continental League hitters in May was criminal. He assaulted them, broke them and walked off leaving them lifeless and lost as he stole away with the Pitcher of the Month award for his barbaric behavior.

"Trevino was truly dominant out there," an opposing hitter said to reporters. "He really made hitters miserable."

The 34-year-old reliever threw 16.1 innings in 15 relief appearances as he registered 11 saves, 15 strikeouts, and notched a 2-1 record and 3.31 ERA for the month.

In 2171 Trevino has totaled 24 relief appearances, worked 24.1 innings, struck out 22 and issued 6 walks. He has 18 saves and fashioned a 2.59 ERA and a 3-1 won-lost mark.


Anguiana Wins Best RL Pitcher
Saturday, June 1st, 2171: Veteran Mauro Anguiana put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Omaha Bees, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Anguiana racked up a 5-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.66 ERA over 38 innings and striking out 29.

This year Anguiana has compiled a 8-1 mark with a 1.99 ERA.

Smith Honored by Continental League
Saturday, June 1st, 2171: Bert Smith earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Napa Valley center fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Smith hit .307 with 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

In 2171 Smith has hit at a .255 clip with 51 hits, 3 home runs, 24 RBIs and has scored 20 times.


Red-Hot Rookie Rewarded in May
Saturday, June 1st, 2171: Mario Rivera is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Toronto hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .417 average with 35 hits, 4 home runs and 12 RBIs.

Looking at his stats this year, Rivera has compiled a .342 batting average, while hitting 6 home runs and driving in 18 runs. He has played in 43 games and scored 18 runs.

Avery June's Best Bat Choice
Monday, July 1st, 2171: Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Roy Avery can still get it done in Front Office Offseason League. In fact, the 38-year-old shortstop for Apex was named the Continental League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In June he batted .333 with 8 home runs, 22 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

During the current season Avery is batting at a .311 clip with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs. He has played in 73 games and scored 47 times.


John Hartman Winner in Republic League
Monday, July 1st, 2171: John Hartman of the Hartford Riverhawks certainly made a resounding impression on the Republic League pitching corps in June and today reaped the reward as the league's best batter for the period.

The left fielder put up some good offensive figures as he hit .468 with 1 home run, 21 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Hartman on the season is batting .361 with 4 home runs. His totals include 39 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has played in 78 games.

Monday, July 1st, 2171: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Gustavo Gareia still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in June. The 31-year-old starter for Apex was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 1 loss with 22 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 2.25 ERA in 36 innings of work.

This season Gareia has compiled a 9-4 record with a 4.11 ERA.


Hernández Nabs RL #1 Pitcher Award
Monday, July 1st, 2171: When Rafael Hernández takes the hill, chances are good for a Ann Arbor victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

Monday, July 1st, 2171: Reginald Murphy was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old third baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen June's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 25 games Murphy batted .320 for Brooklyn, slapping 32 hits in 100 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 14 runs and scored 13 times.

This year Murphy has hit at a .278 pace and produced 45 RBIs, 14 home runs and scored 39 runs.


Rivera Heads the Rookie Class
Monday, July 1st, 2171: A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Mario Rivera just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 23-year-old first baseman for Toronto hit .412 with 33 hits, 2 home runs and 16 runs batted in. He also logged 6 walks and compiled a .453 on-base percentage.

So far this year, Rivera is batting .367 with 8 home runs and 34 RBIs.

CL's Top Hitter Named
Thursday, August 1st, 2171: Halifax shortstop Héctor Ramírez put the wraps on a fine July by capturing the Continental League Batter of the Month honors today.

He put up a .415 batting average and .520 on-base percentage last month while racking up 4 home runs, 17 RBIs, 18 runs scored and 15 walks.

This year Ramírez has hit at a .328 clip with 117 hits, 13 home runs, 60 RBIs and 58 runs scored.


Hammersmith's Durham RL #1 Batter in July
Thursday, August 1st, 2171: When guys like Hammersmith's Tim Durham win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive July, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 36 hits in 89 at-bats.

The veteran catcher hit for a .404 batting average and collected 5 home runs, 23 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

Durham is currently hitting at a .313 pace with 21 home runs, 81 RBIs and has scored 58 times.

Cleveland's Starter Receives CL Pitching Award
Thursday, August 1st, 2171: Gabriel López is the latest Continental League Pitcher of the Month award winner. The Cleveland starter shined on the hill time and again last month and finished July with a sparkling 4-0 record.

In 5 starts he tossed 33.2 innings, posted 37 strikeouts, and put up a 2.67 ERA.

This season López has registered 10 wins and 8 losses in 23 starts with a 4.82 ERA.


Paek Grabs RL Top Pitcher Trophy
Thursday, August 1st, 2171: There's no doubt that Marlboros starter Han-seung Paek earned his Republic League Pitcher of the Month award. He left absolutely no room for doubt as he mowed his way through the opposition in July.

During the month Paek was 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA. He made 5 starts, tossed 35 innings and had 28 strikeouts.

This year Paek has compiled a 10-4 record with a 3.15 ERA in 20 starts.

Montés Tabbed CL's Top Rookie
Thursday, August 1st, 2171: Brooklyn's Francisco Montés collected 32 hits to snare the Continental League Rookie of the Month for July.

He batted .323 with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

The 21-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace.

Thus far this season Montés is hitting .304 with 6 home runs, 41 RBIs and 47 runs scored. He has 120 hits in 395 at-bats and has played in 102 games.


Big Month for RL Rookie
Thursday, August 1st, 2171: The Republic League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month award went to Mario Rivera of Toronto. He was named the best rookie in July.

Last month the 23-year-old Marlboros first baseman played in 19 games and hit .328 with 4 doubles, no triples and 3 home runs. Rivera also scored 11 times and drove in 11 runs.

Montés Wins CL Prize, Named Best Hitter in August
Sunday, September 1st, 2171: Francisco Montés of the Brooklyn Brownstones stood out in August with a .423 batting average against Continental League pitchers to land him the Batter of the Month award.

The 21-year-old shortstop totaled 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He also chipped in 12 walks for a .479 on-base percentage.

For the year Montés is batting .329 with 164 hits and 11 home runs. He has scored 71 times and driven in 63.


August's #1 Batter Announced
Sunday, September 1st, 2171: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Tim Durham. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Hammersmith's catcher pinned down the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .345 in August collecting 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Durham has a .320 average and a .405 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 162 hits, 29 home runs and driven in 106 runs.

Cyclones Starter Named August's Premier Pitcher
Sunday, September 1st, 2171: The Continental League scribes have announced August's Pitcher of the Month and have given the award to Luis Sánchez of Cleveland. He was one tough cookie on the mound last month with a fine 4-2 mark to prove it.

The Cleveland star made 7 starts with a 2.02 ERA and surrendered 28 hits in 40 innings. He struck out 45 and walked 9.

This year Sánchez has a 14-7 record with a 2.70 ERA.


Burton Voted Best RL Pitcher in August
Sunday, September 1st, 2171: The Republic League hitters didn't have a chance in August when the Hammersmith Hooligans manager wrote "Burton" on the lineup card. Outing after outing, Nicholas Burton held teams in check and usually got a win.

He excelled with a 4-1 mark and 2.00 ERA in 5 starts. The talented Hooligans star pitched 36 innings, fanned 29 and held opposing teams to a .259 average.

For his superb mound work Burton was named the RL Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

This season in 26 starts Nicholas Burton has a record of 10-10 with 120 strikeouts in 165.2 innings and a 4.73 ERA.

Newcomer Honored by Continental League
Sunday, September 1st, 2171: August was a month Brooklyn shortstop Francisco Montés is not likely to forget very soon. Not only did he hit .423, he was also named the winner of the Continental League Rookie of the Month award.

He nailed down the honor with a .423 average, 44 hits, 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored during the month.

A look at his current stats shows Montés with a .329 average, 11 home runs, 63 RBIs and 71 runs scored. He has played in 129 games.

Sunday, September 1st, 2171: Lewis Ring of the Omaha Bees went on a month-long hitting streak against Republic League pitching and hauled in the Rookie of the Month award for August.

CL Honors Semedo, Best Hitter in September
Tuesday, October 1st, 2171: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old Leonor Semedo put together a solid offensive month for Cleveland and was crowned September's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .441 with 2 home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored.



This season Semedo is swinging the bat at a .303 rate with 184 hits in 607 at-bats. To date he has hit 4 home runs, scored 90 runs and driven in 61.


Montreal's Correa Snaps up September Batting Award
Tuesday, October 1st, 2171: A hot-hitting Pedro Correa punished RL pitchers in September, hitting .326 in 24 games while racking up 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

With those numbers it came as no surprise that Montreal's 31-year-old left fielder earned Republic League Batter of the Month honors.

This year Correa is hitting at a .273 pace with 36 home runs and 114 RBIs. He has played in 148 games and scored 89 times.

September's Premier Pitcher Announced By CL
Tuesday, October 1st, 2171: There was little doubt around the Continental League that Jaime Meléndez would be awarded Pitcher of the Month honors for September. Today, they made it official, naming the 29-year-old Baltimore Gothams starter the latest honoree.

He thoroughly dominated the hitters who stood in against him, holding them to a .199 batting average while fashioning a 1.07 ERA in 6 starts. His record for the month was 3-2 in 50.1 innings of work.

To date this season Meléndez is 13-8 with 31 starts and an ERA of 2.91 with 204 strikeouts in 213.2 innings.


RL Selects O'Rourke September's Top Starter
Tuesday, October 1st, 2171: Randy O'Rourke nailed down September's Republic League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Montreal to get a deal done before the 25-year-old becomes a free agent.

O'Rourke seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 4-0 record, reeled off 28 strikeouts, worked 35.1 innings and held batters to a .248 average for the month as he posted a 2.55 ERA.

This season O'Rourke has crafted a 14-5 mark with a 3.46 ERA in 205.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .269 against him and he has 136 strikeouts.

Great Month Gets CL Top Rookie Trophy
Tuesday, October 1st, 2171: Reginald Murphy put up eye-catching numbers in September to earn himself the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award.

The third baseman for the Brooklyn Brownstones batted .309 with 8 home runs, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored as he proved he does deserve to play in the Continental League.

Hitting .295 to date, Murphy has 26 home runs and 82 RBIs. He has played in 149 games.


Top RL Rookie of the Month Named
Tuesday, October 1st, 2171: In September Toronto first baseman Mario Rivera was named Rookie of the Month in the Republic League.

Last month Rivera posted a .329 average with 25 hits, no home runs and 11 RBIs.

This year Rivera is batting .340 with 12 home runs and 60 RBIs.
