"Made-up words in The Simpsons"

From this Wikipedia page.
An interesting Wiki entry about words made up in "The Simpsons," many which have become mainstream words in the English language. Guess it wasn't only Shakespeare who could invent words, eh?

I'd give that list a little more credit if I had ever heard more than 5 of them before. Have these words really become "mainstream"?

I think it is interesting (and probably a bit scary) that I have actually used about half of these words in conversation.

I think the sadder thing is that I know exactly in what context to use these words because I remember what scenes they are from

Sorry, I'm not trying to troll here. I haven't watched The Simpsons in about 10 years, so I've never heard or don't remember most of these words. I just took the word "mainstream" to mean that you could hear these words from people even if you don't watch the show. Evidently, I just don't really know anybody who watches it, so that must be why I don't hear the words. I think I get it now.

This seems like one of those lists that probably started with a half dozen really good choices, and then everyone started adding everything they could think of.

That said, some of those really are mainstream. I think it's just accepted now that whenever you take something (a pen, a donut, etc) you have to say "yoink".

You know, "yoink" is probably the word on this list I use most frequently and it has become so ubiquitous that I forgot it had a Simpsons origin. And I am a complete Simpsons nerd.

There are plenty of other words on this list that are in my vocabular. Oddly, one word I use isn't on this list:

Lisa: You know, Dad, the Chinese have the same word for both crisis and opportunity.
Homer: Yes! Crisatunity!

In an unrelated question, has looking up dorky information on Wikipedia become cool? It seems to be very prevalent lately, between this and the salute to Chancellor Palpatine.

Help me, Jebus!

I've never said "yoink" in my life. I've never heard it before either. I must have a problem.

I dunno- wikipedia's been "mainstream internet" for quite a while. I noticed it getting a bit more prevalent for looking stuff up when Trillian included wikiwords.

Sadly, I can confirm that you are correct. My wife can't see a trampoline without shouting that out.

(Which is frustrating, because I point out trampolines to her all the time.)

These slang terms for condoms are getting out of control.
