Yup. Agree with MJ4H: maybe the best console game ever. It was just so very good. I still go back and forth between that and SMB3, depending on which side of the bed I get up on. Play control, great- some game elements never seen before that are still being used to this day. Top down graphics the best at the time. Tremendous music- could be haunting, could be cheery, could be "actiony"- they did it all. Very good story for something that wasn't very story driven.

Heh. I was such a nerd back in the day, me and 2 of my friends had a competition on Zelda 3, on who could beat the game the fastest. We literally would set up call waiting, stay on the phone with each other, and play for several hours, whipping through the game. Declare a stopping point, and resume later.

I won by maybe 20 seconds, I might add. We had that game clocked.

Best I could ever do was 3 lives since each save counted as a life. I just didn't have the patience- well, scratch that- I didn't want to risk outliving my parent's patience by trying to beat it straight through.

Heh. It was quite a bit harder doing it the megaspeed way, too. None of us bothered going for many of the quarter-hearts, since time was so important.

I liked it so much I bought the GBA version. GREAT GAME.
Freebie 4, as I was telling SI, I was playing just the other day. Living at my folks' house, the SNES is still in our family room so I plugged it in and popped in the game.

Great games. Great games indeed.

But didn't the US PSX version call it VI?

Granted, that means you still call it III, since that's what it was released as for SNES, which was the category.

Probably on the grounds that it's a freebie. I'd even be impressed if I had an FF2 pic and someone called it FF4j Easy Type. That said, on a GSB, I'd prefer people go with the American name.

I've got an NES, SNES, N64, PSX, and Gamecube all hooked up in the living room. The NES I got off of ebay, tho, so it's got screen flashing problems. I don't get this- I was a kid so it's not like I took great care of it and I played the heck out of it, but I took enough care that mine still works to this day. But it's at my parents house.

As much of a commie as it makes me, I never owned a Super Nintendo. Scary, but the one major console I never got.

I was a hardcore Sega fanboi as a kid, I scoffed at the SNES. Now I wish I hadn't missed out on all those games.

For me personally, the period when Sega Genesis and the SNES were neck-and-neck was the golden age of console gaming. Both systems just released so many classic games. I get nostalgic just thinking about it.

Well, I want to be fair and balanced so Genesis is slated for Wednesday

Probably only 6 since I don't know the system as well. Then I'm thinking Playstation on Friday, maybe. But I've been shuffling around my orders so that people don't get overloaded on any one type and, say, the PC people get their shot and the early Nintendo people get theirs and the Arcade people have some, etc.

That Zelda was challenging. The monsters were difficult but the puzzle aspect was great too. I think the dungeon in the night world in the forrest (where you found the Master Sword in th elight world) was the most diffcult to beat. Finding all the items was a blast. All my friends had the game and played it and we would brag about who found what first. It was like great trade secrets. I found the magic bommerang first.

The thing that killed me was the dungeon in the dark world where you had to use a bomb to get to the room below and expose Blind (I think he was a wolf). Couldn't figure that out for the longest time.

Standings and games used have been updated. That's it for this edition. That means the next one will be sometime between 12:01am Wednesday and 11:59pm Thursday. The theme is looking like it will be Sega Genesis classics.

Today's Theme: Sega Genesis

I didn't know the Genesis quite as well as the SNES. I had the SNES and it was a set of brothers I Was friends with who had the Genesis. I remember about half of these games. The rest I dug up off of websites, a collection of fansites, gaming "press", and retro gaming sites- all on a "top system games" list somewhere. For those with Nintendo burnout, here you go. For the curious, the three games I played the most on the Genesis were Freebie 1 (of course), Freebie 3, and Bronze 2.

Status: Complete

Game Rank: GSB and Freebies

Freebie 1.

Freebie 2.

Freebie 3.

Freebie 4.

Bronze 1.

Bronze 2.

Bronze 3.

Silver 1.

Silver 2.

Gold.

Correct Answers
F1. Sonic the Hedgehog (Katon)
F2. Ecco the Dolphin (Calis)
F3. Altered Beast (Blade)
F4. John Madden Football (N/A)
B1. Golden Axe (MattJones4Heisman)
B2. Pat Riley Basketball (TazFTW)
B3. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Coffee Warlord)
S1. Rocket Knight Adventures (terpkristin)
S2. Shining Force (Izulde)

So, for some of these (like the gold today)- did people play or at least read about them or is there just a lot of googling going on?

Hehe, we're like vultures on this thing, not much you can do.

Sadly I knew Vectorman also. Not entirely sure why, I'm not a big platform gamer, but I'd seen it. Has a certain unique look you remember.

My two favorite Sega games were present, but I bet they'll show eventually.

I will echo the shame on you for the Moonwalker entry, and also admit that yes I played it...much more than I should've.

Edit: Ok I'm blind, one of my two favorites is there..don't mind me.

I remember it from the game always being playable at Toys R Us so I have that image seared into my brain. Before they redesigned there stores and before other retailers like Best Buy etc. that was the place that I usually bought SNES games at.

Nope, that's not the game. Lots of sports games on the Genesis to go through, so this might take a while.

EDIT: Taz got it, tho.

BTW, remember guesses reset at midnight CST (~3 hours) so you can guess again if something's still open.

Silver 2 is the only one left, tho (of the GSBs)

And with that, the GSB's are gone but 3 freebies remain for anyone not yet in the game.

I'm kindof surprised they've never made a Shining Force collection since making collections is in vogue these days. But I guess they weren't popular enough.

That would be one of my 2 favorite Sega games.

Loved that series. I see they upgraded and released that one for the GBA, I need to pick it up.

Didn't the Sega CD have a series of like 4 of them we never got here? Three from different sides of the story, and the 4th tying it all up. Something like that, would've loved to seen that.

I won't spoil my other favorite in case SI uses it later.

Well, Shining Force and its sequel were the only two tactical RPGs in the series. The rest of the Shining series have all been action-rpgs.

The remake for the GBA is expanded, but I hate the new graphics they use. They're nowhere as clean and aesthetically pleasing as the original.

Here's the one I was thinking of. Looks like only the first part was translated and brought over here. It sounds like the standard style from the first two also. It'd almost be worth hunting down a Saturn for.

This begs the question, if it's the second day and the freebies haven't been guessed, should they be allowed open to everyone? Or maybe 24 hours? They don't get you any points but they pad your "games" stat.

There's still a couple of freebies left on the board. For the moment, I'm not going to allow the freebie guess since you aren't supposed to guess them if you already have a freebie.
