Obsessive Collecting

I have a friend that is working towards one of those massive rooms dedicated to shelves and shelves of vinyl records that he might have listened to once.

Three months ago I didn't have any fancy Japanese cooking knives. Right now I have seven and very much need to stop buying Japanese cooking knives.

What do you collect obsessively? Show me the thing you are most proud of.

I have been cutting through beer cans for like three weeks straight, as one does.

Unlike the mythical Ginsu, the irony/foolishness of fancy cooking knives is they become significantly more fragile the more you pay.

The most frightening fear I have is chopping my hands off with a potato mandolin.

At various points: baseball cards, Playboy magazines, Monopoly sets. Right now I buy books but it's not obsessive, just more than I can probably read.

I'd say my steam collection but I'm not exactly proud of it.

Baseball Caps. I have about 120 now.

My collecting took a big hit when Cooperstown Cap Co. lost their license to reproduce historic MLB caps. I still pick up 4-5 a year to add to the collection.

I have a lot of bobbleheads. Like hundreds. I have some strewn around the office and stuff, but most are in the crawl space.

Mostly got them from going to games. As a Bulls season ticket holder for like 15 years, I not only got them at games (they'd give 4-5 out a year), but they mail out a box of all the giveaways at the end of the year. And I live real close to Wrigley so attend a lot of Cubs games too.

Not sure I'd qualify as a "collector" but I have a lot and buy one every so often if they are cool. Keep telling myself to throw them up on Ebay but never get around to actually doing it.

I was going to say something about hockey cards. But yeah, I can’t compete with that.

I got nothin.....

That compares to Bull Jizz, but I do have ridiculous amounts of "plastic crack" Miniature wargames models that I've built and painted over the years. I sold 3 large packing boxes of stuff and I still have no room on my shelves....

I'm collecting calories like crazy.

I'm snacking way more WFH than I ever did traveling to a client site.

I've gotten much better at this lately, but got more stuff I've bought over the last 10-15 years than I'll ever need if I never bought another mini.

I used to collect comics, CDs, DVDs... those were the main ones that I spent a ton of cash on, comics in particular. Managed to curb most of those habits over the years. Still got hundreds and hundreds of comics sitting boxes that I guess I'll maybe get around to selling one of these days.

Hot Wheels for me. Primarily 1967-1972 Camaros, but I also have a bunch of 50s and 60s muscle cars as well.

Definitely. Scarcity plus quality of genetics. Same idea with rules against artificial insemination in thoroughbred racehorses. Stud fees. DNA can be a cash cow if you play it right. I’ve obviously not played it right!
