Hiking near Laramie, WY

My family will be going to Wyoming in late July mainly near Laramie. I want to spend a day in the mountains hiking. The obvious choice seems like somewhere in Medicine Bow National Forest. I am an experienced backpacker but I will be going with my wife and 2 kids (10 and 11). They all hike occasionally and generally like it once it's done but they will moan and groan on the steep stuff. Now the problem is that I LOVE the steep stuff. I want to go high and have great views. Is anyone familiar with the area that could recommend someplace with great views and preferably less than 1200 feet of elevation gain? Bonus for fewer other hikers.
