Man, I've been watching a ton of youtube Sopranos clips the last week or so. I'm enjoying the modern era of great modern cable dramas like Breaking Bad and Dexter but Sopranos was the best. And Gandolfini and his style was the anchor.

Hard to believe he was only 37 when the Sopranos started

I guess we know what happened at the end of the series if they ever do a reunion show.

Don't stop......

Very sad but ya can't really say it's unexpected. He seemed to be in fairly shitty shape during the last couple of Sopranos seasons.

I know some people who knew him personally and all they ever said is what a genuinely nice guy he was. Really sad to hear the news.

This one really bummed me out.

He was a Rutgers grad and a big fan of the football program. When Greg Schiano got hired, it was before the 2001 season when the Sopranos was really reaching its peak. He filmed a commercial for the program (which I can't find online, best I can find is the below screenshot) with him sitting around a table and people talking about how "he's bringing all the excitement, he's changing things around here, there are big things coming" stuff like that, and it pans over and everyone is talking about Schiano, not Gandolfini.

My favorite story comes from the day of my 21st birthday. Rutgers was hosting Michigan State to open the 2004 season. I was in rough shape from the night before but was still tailgating outside of the stadium when I literally bumped into Gandolfini. He was walking with a friend and as he kept walking past me I yelled out "Mr. Gandolfini, today's my 21st birthday, how about a picture?". He said back, very nicely, "Sorry, not taking any pictures today, just here to enjoy the game. Go RU!". I knew he was a pretty private guy, and I understood especially when there's thousands of people around who could start annoying him too.

So Rutgers goes on to win the game, and it was a big one at the time. We're at the bars afterward and I bump into a friend of mine who happened to be one of the most beautiful girls I had ever met at that point of my life (I swung and missed many times). I tell her excitedly that I saw Gandolfini before the game. She says "Me too!" and pulls out her phone, which contains a background picture of her and James Gandolfini with a huge fucking smile.

I just laughed knowing I would have done the exact same thing if I was in his shoes.

This one is pretty great.

Matt Zoller Seitz on James Gandolfini, 1961-2013 -- Vulture

Quote:

My editor Mark DiIonno asked if he could come along when I visited the set, because he’d gone to Rutgers with Gandolfini and claimed to be personally responsibility for the distinctive dent in the actor’s forehead. Apparently a bunch of guys were tear-assing around the dorm shooting dart guns at one another, and Mark surprised Gandolfini by kicking a door open before he could burst through it. The door struck Gandolfini in the forehead and left that famous crease.

“I can’t wait to see the look on his face,” Mark said.

When we arrived on the set, Gandolfini saw Mark. His face lit up with one of the warmest smiles I’ve ever seen on anybody. He hugged Mark and clapped him on the back so hard you’d think he was trying to dislodge food lodged in Mark’s gullet.

This is how James Gandolfini often greeted people: as if he was overjoyed to see them, and wanted to revel in their presence just in case he never saw them again.

Rutgers has re-released the commercial on Youtube after many people were asking about it:
