Since you'll likely have a top 10 pick in the 2006 draft, how would you list the drafties right now compared to CSS? Who are some of the darkhorses your scouts have noted? With such a poor (sorry, I couldn't find a better word) season right now, drafting will be pretty important if you want to get the Hurricanes to the top.

what are his coaching ratings, if i remember from playing the demo, they were pretty high.

Also, how much cap space do you think youll have going into the offseason?

Haha yes, thank you Johnny. It was between him, Babcock and Andy Murray but I decided Gretz was best because he has the same ideas I do for running our team.

As far as salary .. 28 million tied up in 20 guys, but some of them are just low level guys I don't plan on bringing back.

We'll sign Johnson and Ladd, so we're looking at 5-6 mil next year for FA. I want to spend about 35-36 million so I have flexibility.

CAROLINA NHL DRAFT REVIEW

1.5 - F Peter Mueller

The #1 player on our big board, Mueller is a power forward who can skate and move the puck. He put up 60 points for Prince George in the WHL as an 18 year old and should put up even better numbers this year in the WHL with another year under his belt.

2.1 - F Phil Kessel

This was the steal of the draft. If Mueller were gone at 5, Kess would've snuck in as our 5th pick, but instead he falls all the way out of the 1st round to us at the beginning of the 2nd. I'm in a bind with Kess. I don't like how he played at the U, and I think a year in Lowell could be better for him but I just don't know how to play that set. Still, he's just 19 years old now and should've been a top 10 pick at worse, if not top 5. He was the ISS #3.

2.12 - F Colton Yellow Horn

A small kid at 5'9", 175, he can flat out skate. Very much in the mold of a Paul Kariya with his speed and potential play making ability, Colton will be with Lethbridge in the WHL for his third year. His last two seasons have been excellent with 84 and 86 points respectivley. This one should be another improvement and then who knows what the future holds.

2.18 - F Michael Grabner

Another WHL kid, this one from Austria, his stock rose when he posted a 75 point season for Spokane. He has excellent hockey sense, but lacks in his own zone. He too is another small guy at 5'11", 175, but once again, he can flat out fly and should fit in well with our run n' gun mentality.

3.1 - F David Desharnais

Another small guy, but stocky, at 5'7", 183, Desharnais was reccommended to me by Gretzky and our Assisstant GM. Desharnais played in the offensive minded QMJHL and had a hell of a year with 60 goals and 75 assists. He'll be able to fit in well with how we want to play.

4.1 - D Ivan Maximkin

Our first defensemen drafted, we decided to go with some size in the 6'4", 190 lbs Ivan Maximkin of Togliatti in the Russian Elite League. He's someone, who if he can bring around his offensive game, could shine in the NHL because he isn't afraid to play physical and is sold in his own end.

4.2 - F Jussi Peltomaa

At 5'11", 185, Peltomaa isn't very fast, but he is tremendous defensivley and isn't afraid to grind it out. We realize we still need to have some guys who can play D and create some havoc, and Peltomaa could develope into a 3rd or 4th line guy who goes out there and creates a mess and still has the ability to capitalize on mistakes.

4.19 - F Ivan Duval

Duval is now on Tri-City in the WHL. Last year he only scored 10 points but he has so much talent that on a new team he can hopefully show his worth. He has all the tools to be a good player, and good size at 6'0", 170 lbs. This was a gamble pick but he was ranked #83 with the ISS still and we had a pick to use a gamble on.

4.27 - D Denis Davydov

Denis Davydov is a 6'0", 180 lbs hard hitting defensemen (19 in hitting) who has some great potential as an enforcer type on the blue line. We don't expect a top 4 defensemen, but a guy who can be a 5th or 6th guy who won't hurt us and add that intimidation to our point.

5.1 - F Brent Aubin

Aubin is a 20 year old who'll play for Lowell this year most likely. He is 5'9", 160, with speed. He plays a gritty, hard working game that might not always show on the stat sheets, but will not go unnoticed in the coaches eyes.

6.1 - F Andrew Colclough

At 6'3", 205, Colclough is a power forward about to enter his Sophmore season at Boston College. His freshman year he netted 10 goals and 15 assists, and this year we expect more of the same. Colclough will provide a big body in front.

7.1 - F Jay Lingo

At 6'0", 171, Lingo is about to enter his Sophmore season at Yale. Lingo is simply put, an offensive machine. He has amazing hands, good speed and a great ability to deke. At 19 he will only get better and in my opinion is my biggest coup because I truly feel he can be a gamer for me.

Beljo looks solid but went undrafted somehow. I am really surpised.

Vasyunov went in the 3rd round to the Flyers and he took looks damn solid. Could be a steal for the Flyers.

2. Michael Biega (St. Johns)
3. Kale Perry (Baie-Comeau)

WHL

1. Riley Martini (Regina)
2. Brett Mitchell (Swift Current)
3. Duncan Duguay (Prince George)

OHL

Hmm...Carolina's real life record as of November 16: 13-3-1 (27 pts). I think the computer game's going to be a little off.

Edit to add: To match the game, Carolina just has to go 6-52-7 over the remaining 65 games. (Has any team ever done so poorly over so long a stretch?)

Have you thought of leaving Kessel in Minnesota for one more year to see if he plays better? Might be better off there than in the AHL as a 19 year old.

You know I gave it a thought but it seems like in my past with NCAA guys, whenever I lead them there they bust on me. Maybe it's just because its guys I covet high and they bomb but according to my team page Kessel is my 3rd best RW as is. I signed him so we're stuck with him but there's a legitimate shot he'd make the big club right now.

We'll take more lumps this year but if we can ride it out we'll be set for the year after.

Who did you sleep with to allow Kessel to drop that far

Also, my order for a Colton Yellow Horn jersey has just been placed

You've got better willpower than I would have. I would have been trying to package some picks together to move back into the first round after Kessel went past the 15th or so pick. Likely would have moved up to at least the 22nd or so spot to grab him if he fell that far.

Would you have been a bit ticked for not having traded up had he gone a pick or two before your next draft slot?

Actually I did try to trade up to 10, 15 and 20, lol.

I didn't want to deal with another future first though so I just got really, really lucky.
