EUFA Cup, First Round, 2nd leg: we play Rabotniki at Loftus Road. We're up 4-0 already on aggregate goals, best of all, 4 away goals. We're again 1-2 favourites to win this game.

Honestly, I don't see how they could beat us by more than for at Loftus Road and given that, I play a starting lineup accordingly. This means a rare start for Generoso Rossi and also a start for Fábio Rochemback.

This also means I can rest some of our injured players, getting them ready for later.

Dang, the first half goes scoreless with us outshooting them but barely, 6(1) to 3(1). Kind of disappointing, although I'm not utterly surprised as we're not really trying that hard.

We finally take the lead in the 71st minute, when Fábio Rochemback powers one in from way out. Up 1-0, 5-0 aggregate.

We double our lead in the 82nd minute when Scott Donnelly receives a nice center from Jon Dahl Tomasson and also scores from a distance. Up 2-0, 6-0 aggregate.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 2, Rabotniki 0 (6-0 on aggregate)

We outshot them 14(7) to 5(2) on the game, doing a bit better in the second half. Had to be a boring game and known as one in advance as the crowd of only 10040 was the lowest ever for a competitive match at Loftus Road.

Fábio Rochemback was the only one of our player rating higer than 7.

We've been given $110,000 for the win and we're through to group play!

The groups have been drawn and we end up in group D with the following teams:
Lazio (Italy, 18th in Italy A)
Real Sociedad (Spain, 2nd in Spain 1st division)
Hannover 96 (Germany, 9th in Germany 1st division)
Pasching (Austria)

At first view, this doesn't look like a very easy group. Remember that each team play each other and the top three teams qualify for the 1st Knockout round. Here is the list of fixtures:

The Ivory Coast squad has to be confirmed for our upcoming friendly against Norway on October 6. I find this kind of frustrating since I can't select some injured players that I know will be ready at the time of the game, at least to be used as subs. Here's a list of the whole national pool for all of Ivory Coast. Any player marked "Main" has been brought up to the National Team squad. As you can see, it's not a very deep pool...

League Match #8: we play Fulham on their pitch. They're having their typical hot start to the season and are sitting in 4th place in the EPL but we are 6-4 favourites to win this game.

Their starting left winger is injured for this game.

Interesting trivia about the matches between our two teams. In all of the four matches played between us since we've moved up to the EPL two seasons ago, the away team has always come out as the winner.

We're back to a more standard lineup with players well rested despite us playing only three days ago.

This game is on TV and Bonaventure Kalou is our new designed key man . Papa Bouba Diop is Fulham's and they add that the midfielder is the type of player who can creat something out of nothing. While they don't say it for Kalou, they very well could have .

Fulham show a 3-4-3 formation to start the game.

We take the lead in the 7th minute when Fabrice Fernandes' corner to the 6 yard box is missed on a header by a defender. Jon Dahl Tomasson is standing right behind him and he doesn't miss his chance to make it 1-0!

They tie it in the 19th minute when a nice center is headed in. Tied 1-1.

In the 37th minute, they play a free kick forward. Danny Shittu goes up for the header, the whistles and look to his assistant for help. DANG IDIOT! He points the spot! PENALTY!!! But, but, BUT!!! SIMON JENTZSCH SAVES IT!!! On the play, Shittu was given a yellow card, already our fourth since the start of the game...

I've asked the guys to go easy on their tackles and man easy do they go. We let them move around, afraid to touch anybody for fear of getting any more yellows, until they score through the middle. Down 1-2. Dang referee is controlling the score!

1-2 is the halftime score and we're outshooting them 7(6) to 5(4). ARG! Dang referee is giving them the game...

In the 74th minute, as we keep putting pressure on their back four, Cristiano Lucarelli is trying a surge to enter their penalty area. He is tripped by the last defender between him and the keeper, just outside the area! The referee comes AND SHOWS HIM THE RED CARD!!! He is sent off for a professional foul! The ensuing free kick is just outside their penalty area and Freddy Guarín is the one taking it. He flights it over the wall and HE HITS THE CROSSBAR!!! We can't get to the rebound and they clear the ball...

Final Score: Q.P.R. 1, Fulham 2

ARRRRGGGG!!!! We outshot them 17(11) to 9(5) on the game and clearly should have won this game.

Danny Shittu was selected as the Man of the Match with a rating of 8. He won an astonishing 18 of 19 headers Aubabkari Yakubu and Simon Jentzsch also both rated at 8.

We drop to 7th place with the loss, our first of the season.

The board is still delighted with my performance as manager of the club.

Steve Finnan suffered a damaged elbow in training and he will miss one week.

Abubakari Yakubu was selected to the EPL Team of the Week.

I'm definitely a deep lurker on this site, but I really enjoy your FM dynasties and, being a rabid FM player myself, just wanted to say keep up the good work.
Having just taken over the Morocco team in one of my games, I went to the palyer search screen and set the filter to bring up all players eligible to play for my National team. That way you can add players to the pool who arent already plus, and this can be big, add players who have Cote D'Ivoire as a second nationlaity who havent been capped by their other nationality. Once you cap them, they are yours.

Oh, and enjoy the Kalou era, he's a heck of a player.

League Match #9: we play Middlesbrough at Loftus Road. They're currenty in 13th place with 2 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses to their record. We're 6-4 favourites to win this game.

I start Rochemback in the DMC spot to give a breather to Guarín but I'll keep him on a short leash and won't hesitate replacing him very early on if needed.

I try a 4-1-3-2 formation which is very similar to our usual 4-1-2-1-2 formation except that instead of having wingers with up arrows on both side of the pitch, we have an AMR and an AML with no arrows.

The first half ends scoreless with them outshooting us 9(6) to 6(0). A ugly half in which we got better toward the end but that started very, very bad. Simon Jentzsch is rating at 9 after 45 minutes and is the lone reason why we're still in the game.

Jon Dahl Tomasson has to leave the game because of an injury in the 64th minute. Güiza replaces him.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 0, Middlesbrough 0

We had a better second half but still didn't do much offensively. They outshot us 10(6) to 9(1) on the game.

Simon Jentzsch got a much deserved Man of the Match selection with a rating of 9. He really was the sole reason why we even got a draw. Fabrice Fernandes also played well after taking over for Peter Lovenkrands at the half. He rated at 8.

Jon Dahl Tomasson comes out of this game with a damaged shoulder and he will miss two weeks.

Gilles Donald Yapi Yapo has been pulled out of the Ivory Coast squad because of an injury. I can pick a replacement and well, I'm stumped. I took a note that I called up Didier Deguy Zokora, but if you look to the September 30 selection list, he's already in there. Oh well...

International Friendly: Ivory Coast play Norway at home. They are ranked 50th in the world while we are 38th.

As you can see from the pre-game lineup, Chelsea have put a 45 minute playing time limit for Didier Drogba. I will respect that limit and sub him out at halftime.

This will be the first time that Kolo Abib Touré is fit enough to play for me with the Ivory Coast squad.

This is our last friendly before the first leg of our World Cup qualifier against Madagascat on October 13. As I realize that this means that Bonaventure Kalou won't be available for our league match against Blackburn on that same day, well it hits me... WELL, ME NEITHER!!!! I got no clue what will happen with that, I guess we'll cross the bridge when we'll get to the river...

Norway show a 4-2-3-1 formation to start the game.

We take a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute as Didier Drogba made a diving kick off the post on a rebound from a shot by Arouna Koné.

That is the score at the half with us outshooting them 10(6) to 4(0). We're winning possession in all three sections of the pitch too which is nice.

I pull Drogba and I realize I made a tactical mistake. If you take a look at the pregame lineup, you'll see that I selected only 7 subs even though I was allowed to take up to 9. Now all of my 6 outfielder bench players will see action...

In the 67th minute, Yaya is tripped on the edge of the penalty area. It could have been a free kick just outside the area but no, the referee runs to the spot! PENALTY!!! Tchiressoua Guel scores easily. Up 2-0!

They take one backk in the 80th minute with a very long center to our far post, almost right on the post. Gérard Amoukou Gnanhouan jumps for it but can't reach it and it's tipped in. Still up, 2-1.

Final Score: Ivory Coast 2, Norway 1

We outshot them 16(8) to 11(5) with their keeper getting the Man of the Match selection with a rating of 9. Both of our wingers, Salomon Kalou and Cedric Konan, in addition to Didier Drogba and Yaya all rated at 8 for his game.

Say what you want, even though this is only a friendly, it felt good to finally get an international win. I'm still unbeaten with this Ivory Coast squad A good win on the eve of our world class qualifier...

Actually, there should be an box when you go to the "customize search" screen at the bottom that says "show only players eligible to play for Ivory Coast" or something like that. It's right below the one that lets you include your own players in the filter. That should show you all players in the database who or CIV nationals or are available for you to call up.

Just off the friendly win over Norway, I have to confirm my selected squad for the first leg of the first round of World Cup qualifying. I don't make any changes to our list of selected players.

October 8, 2007
Back to some Q.P.R. news as Simon Jentzsch has been selected to the EPL Team of the Week. He's been a wall for us so far this season. Look at this, his stats for the last four seasons:
YearTeamDivisionInfoAppsConcClnMoMAv R
2007-08Q.P.R.Premier DivisionFree107527.60
2006-07WolfsburgFirst Division3436716.97
2005-06WolfsburgFirst Division4557526.84
2004-05WolfsburgFirst Division3643716.94

Five clean sheets already this season, I think this speaks volume about our ball control, slow tempo tactic...

October 10, 2007
Seeing how they're all unhappy about not playing with the first team, I free release Marcus Bignot, Gino Padula, and Aaron Brown. They were all on month-to-month contracts so I don't have to give them any compensation.

October 11, 2007
GAH! Emmanuel Eboué suffered a chest injury in training and has been pulled from the Ivory Coast squad. There are no worthy replacements in the national pool.

AAAAH! Our Blackburn match of October 13 has been rearranged because of international call-ups. On top of not having a manager, The Rs would have without Bonaventure Kalou, Danny Shittu, and Abubabakari Yakubu, all away on international duty for the African Section World Cup qualifiers. On thing though, they rearranged it to October 17, date of the second leg of the Ivory Coast/Madagascar series, DOH!

October 12, 2007
A couple of Ivory Coast news clipping as we get ready for the first leg of our series against Madagascar. First:

hmm.

good job, fm..

tim's brazil/chelsea update:

Brazil are through to the Quarters with an exhilirating, nerve-wracking, nail-biting, and "Whoa!" 3-3 thriller that ended with a 3-1 penalty advantage for Brazil over spain...

Some interesting notes:
Chelsea's Starting MR Joaquin scored the first for Spain.
Chelsea's top 2 keepers started and played the entire game. Lucas for Brazil and Iker Casillas for Spain...

so.. Now I have a GK controversy brewing in Chelsea, don't you think? I feel comfortable with both of them... and with Lucas' performance in that WC match, do i dare transfer Iker out or rotate them like I have been? Usually, that ends up with Lucas starting the easy EPL games (lower part of the league) and Casillas starting the big EPL (arsenal, ManU, Newcastle, e.g) and cup games (CL knockouts, FA Cup 6th+ round, League cup)....

Casillas was acquired in Chelsea's record signing of BP 56M, i believe. 'Swhy he wears #84 (US$84M or Euros) in the games.

maybe this is a fun time after all....

World Cup Qualifier, 1st round, leg 1: Ovory Coast play Madagascar at hbome. We are 1-10 favourites to win this game .

Emmanule Eboué's injury is hurting us as his replacement, Julien N'Da doesn't appear up to his level.

Subs rules for this game are 7 players on the bench, possiblity of using 3 of them.

This game is on TV and while Didier Drogba is presented aas Ivory Coast's key man, they can't even present one for Madagascar. I think it's the first time I've seen this happen. They add that Madagascar are going to struggle today and they can't see them being able to contain Ivory Coast. We'll see about that...

And see it we do, and very fast as we take a 2-0 lead before the game is 10 minutes old. Both times, Arouna Koné was the architect behind the goals, first feeding Bonaventure Kalou with a nice center to the 6 yard box, leaving Kalou with an easy header in, then with a nice touch pass to Didier Drogba leaving him alone in the middle of the Madagascan defense. Up 2-0 after 8.

Left winger Cedric Konan had to leave the game in the 14th minute. Kanga Gauthier Akalé came in to replace him.

We keep pressuring them and in the 18th minute, Bonaventure centers a nice ball to his borther Salomon who buries it for his first ever goal for Ivory Coast. Up 3-0.

The party continues and in the 23rd minute, it's Bonaventure's turn to score, his second of the game on a nice pass from Drogba.

In the 34th minute, Didier Deguy Zokora's vision helps him feed a nice ball to Arouna Koné's feet. Koné takes it home on his own, up 5-0!

We're relentless and I'm beginning to feel bad about as we add another one, 28 seconds into injury time. This time it's all on the left wing wher Drogba passes it to Koné who fires a shot from 25 yards out. We're up 6-0 and their keeper has his head in his hands. He's having a torid time today. They have three players rated at 4, their goalkeeper and their two centrebacks, no wonder we're scoring like that...

6-0 is the halftime score and we're outshooting them 14(8) to nothing. They're basically not getting out of the penalty area, let alone out of their half of the field...

They're really defenseless, even though I've told the guys to pull back a lot, and in the 63rd minute, Yaya adds to our lead. Now up 7-0.

Poor keeper, he keeps getting sprayed and Salomon Kalou's shot is deflected in the 81st minute. Aruna pounces on the loose ball for the 8-0 goal.

Final Score: Ivory Coast 8, Madagascar 0

Wow, talk about a drubbing... I felt like Team Canada playing a hockey game against team Nigeria or something like that... We outshot them 26(11) to nothing on the game.

Salomon Kalou was selected as Man of the Match with a rating of 10 and a goal. Arouna Koné also rated at 10 while five others rated at 9: N'Da, Boka, Zokora, Akalé, and Bonaventure Kalou.

As it would be expected, this game was a record win for Ivory Coast and a record high scoring game too

We also had a bit of bad news though, as Cedric Konan suffered a groin strain and will miss 2 weeks. Emmanuel Eboué is "recallable" so I call him back up.

As an example of how one sided some of the other matches in the African section have been, Danny Shittu's Nigeria won 6-0 over Burkina Faso and Abubakari Yakubu's Ghana won 5-0 over Sao Toné & Principe...

Thanks, it was kind weird though. You know, the highlight screen always coming back and having the feeling after the first three goals that every highlight is going to be another one...

Salomon Kalou
is today celebrating his first international goal for Ivory Coast after hitting the target against Madagascar. The 22yo Feyenoord right winger told the post-match press conference that he couldn't thank Steve Gougeon enough for having the confidence in him and hoped he could put in a few more good performances in the future.

October 15, 2007
Aruna has been pulled from the Ivory Coast squad shoulder injury suffered in training. I pick no replacement.

Good news! Q.P.R.'s match against Blackburn, orginally planned for October 17 has been rearranged for November 7 due to international call ups.

October 16, 2007
Gah, another hit to the Ivory Coast squad. Kanga Gauthier Akalé suffered a bruised rib in training and wil mis 3 days. He's pulled off the Ivory Coast squad and I pick no replacement.

We've now lost our two main wingers in Cedric Konan and now Akalé. Sure, we've all seen how bad Madagascar was, but in any other time, this could have been very bad...

October 17, 2007
Dang, another injury to an Ivorian starter! This time, it's left fullback Arthur Boka who will miss one month with a torn groin muscle. If his mother club is the least bit worried about his future, they may even send him to the OR, but I got no control over that. Emmanuel Eboué can play either side, so I'll probably move him over to the left and keep Julien N'Da in the right fullback spot.

World Cup Qualifier, 1st round, leg 2: Ivory Coast play Madagascar on their pitch. We're up 8-0 after the first leg and are again 1-10 favourites to win this game.

As I mentionned before, I move Emmanuel Eboué from his usual right fullback spot to the left fullback spot to replace injured Arthur Boka and I start Julien N'Da on the right.

Didier Drogba played yesterday with Chelsea and as a result his condition is a bit on the low side. Given how this game is more like a formality, I give the start to Eli Kroupi.

This game is on TV and again, they can't find a key man for Madagascar. For us, commanding centreback Kolo Abib Touré is presented as a key player as they mention that the squad has conceded only 7 goals in the 9 matches he's played in.

Funny thing when looking at their starting lineup. Look at this formation screen:

Okay, it's a pretty basic 5-3-2 formation with two wingbacks, right? Now, look at the profiles of these two players and spot where they are playing in the formation screen...

Anyway, the game starts and they are playing a bit better at home than on the road and it takes us all of 24 minutes before we finally score when Marc-Eric Gueï send it forward on the left wing to Arouna Koné who simply centers it to the 6 yard box when Bonaventure Kalou simply flicks it toward goal to score in a bizarre fashion. Up 1-0, 9-0 on aggregate.

That's that halftime score and we're outshooting them 9(2) to nothing (again). They look much better on their end, controlling the ball and not simply letting us do whatever we want with it... Their goalkeeper and that weird left wingback are both rated at 3. Maybe they should switch position

Final Score: Ivory Coast 1, Madagascar 0

We pulled back a lot in the second half and were not even trying to go forward. We outshot them 10(3) to nothing still...

I get a good laugh out of the fact that Norbert Mejakic that GK/LWB has been selected as Man of the Match. Turns out they ended up putting him back in goal and he made all of one save in the second half. Must have been a heck of a save to make up for that atrocious first half since he only played in goal for the last 16 minutes of the game

At first, I'm thinking that we'll have to play much better in group play if we're going to have any kind of hope of going to the World Cup, but I change my mind when I see some of the other results in the second legs. Abubakari Yakubu's Ghana drew 0-0 with Sao Tomé & Principe and Danny Shittu's Nigeria even lost 0-2 to Burkina Faso.

Speaking of group play, groups have been drawn. There are only 4 groups this time around, as opposed to 5 groups for the 2006 World Cup. I guess it's because the 2010 World Cup is to be played in South Africa and they're pre-qualified as host. Anyway, we've been drawn in group 2, with Gabon, Rwanda, Libya, Mauritania, and Zambia. At first, I have no clue if any of these nations are strong or not, hey, I'm a North American dude Then I did some digging and came up with some interesting results. First none of these teams qualified for the 2006 World Cup, although neither did the Ivory Coast, heh. Then I found these group stage records for all our opponents:
Gabon, 4 wins, 6 losses
Rwanda, 2 wins, 1 draw, 7 losses
Libya, 3 wins, 7 losses
Mauritania, didn't get to group stage
Zambia, 5 wins, 4 draws, 1 loss.

As a comparison, Ivory Coast had a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses finishing 3rd in the same group as Libya.

Honestly, I like our chances. With a little luck and good managing, I could bring this nation to the World Cup. (note to self: check to see when was the last time that Ivory Coast went to the World Cup)

Here are all the groups:

Whoohoo! Congratulations in the IC appointment and success. Kanou is a soccer god. Hell, if this was the real world being played out, I'd even buy his jersey.

*sighs and waits impatiently for his copy of FM 2K6 to arrive* I'm even tempted to start up another game of WWSM 2K5 to tide me over.

Well, in the real world the Ivory Coast are going for the first time in 2006. So if they didn't qualify last time, they've never been.

hahaha, no kidding about Kalou but crazily, I think I'd by a Shittu shirt first Big Dan's been with me since my first steps at Loftus Road and has never let me down...

Thanks for reading too!

PS: this whole WC2010 is making me rethink the strategy of starting to play FM2006 rightaway. I will most definitely download it, fiddle with it, but I'm teally tempted to keep going with this dynasty as my main one, maybe until 2010, especially if I bring that Ivory Coast squad to the big dance...

Thanks for the info, yeah I just saw that (from official World Cup website). Would be pretty cool if I'd be the one to bring them where my predecessor failed, at least in the game

Today is the first day of group play in the EUFA Cup. We have a bye this time around and will only play in two weeks, but some all other four in our group are in action. Hannover 96 lost surprisingly (to me at least) to Pasching, 0-1 at home while Real Sociedad beat Lazio decisively, 4-1 on their pitch. We play our first matches in group play on November 1st.

League Match #10: we play Aston Villa at Loftus Road. They are currently in 7th place and we are 6-4 favourites to win this game.

Hrm Fabrice Fernandes is showing up as unhappy. Wondering what's up with that, I see that he thinks the club is underachieving. HUH!!! Cedric van der Gun thinks the same thing!!! huhoh... Even Scott Donnelly says he want to help the club improve its league position.

What'S that all about?!? Yeah, we're in 10th place, but damnit, we've only lost one game, winning 3 and drawing 5. With 14 points over 9 games, we're only 3 points off 4th place Liverpool who've played 10 games.

And it's getting worse, I'm now described as a underachieving manager in my profile although the board is still satisfie with the team's Premier Division performace and both them and the fans are still delighted with my management of the club.

Come on guys, now isn't the time to turn on me!!!

Aston Villa show a 5-3-2 to start the game and it's quite effective as we're always second on the ball and they take the lead after only 4 minutes. Down 0-1.

We regain some composure and tie the game only 4 minutes later with some nice passing. Christian Wilhelmsson on his right wing sent a nice pass to Cristiano Lucarelli's feet. Lucarelli then flicked the ball over to Bonaventure Kalou who scores his 100th league goal, in off the post. Tied 1-1!

We're spending a lot of time on our end but we got good defenders very able to restart an offense. That's what Juanfran does in the 21st minute when his long clearance leads to a footrace between Wilhelmsson and a defender. Wilhelmsson gets to the ball first and he centers it to the far post, where Kalou is all alone to head it in for his second goal of the game. Up 2-1!

That's the halftime score. Shots are 5(4) for us, 7(2) for them. We played much better after that second goal, now we gotta hang in there...

Around the 62nd minute, Simon Jentzsch is kinda down, rating at 5. He needs a couple big saves to get him back in the game.

I don't know what he was thinking, but Danny Shittu tried to score on a free kick from the centerline in the 83rd minute. Aston Villa went to a 4-2-4 formation around the same time.

Jentzsch is back to his "A" game in the 90th minute and he saves the day with a big block on a one-on-one!

Final Score: Q.P.R. 2, Aston Villa 1

The still outshot us 12(6) to 9(4) on the game, but we held them off.

Bonaventure Kalou is selected as Man of the Match with a rating of 8 and two goals. Christian Wilhelmsson and Simon Jentzsch also both rated at 8.

We move up to 5th place with the win, proof that our position wasn't that bad. There are no more players that think the club is underachieving and I'm not described as a underachieving manager anymore...

I'm getting a feeling that Fábio Rochemback is destroying our team morale and I decide to offer him around. I'm asking a reasonable $1.5M for him.

October 22, 2007
Only a couple of days have passed, but French club Lille get back to me with an offer for Rochemback. They are offering the requested $1.5M for him. While he would only move on January 1st, I accept the offer.

Carling Cup, 3rd round: we play Peterborough at Loftus Road. They're currently 3rd in League One and even though they finished 2st last year, they're not to take lightly. Still, we are 1-6 favourites to win this game.

(*note* I will start using the real name of "Carling Cup" since I have installed a new "fake.lnc" file that makes the game use the real name. No more "EURO Cup", it's now really called "EUFA Cup" and no more "EURO Vase", it's now refered to as the "EUFA Intertoto Cup")

We play Chelsea on the 27th and I adjusted my starting lineup, resting some regulars in order to have them fresh to go for Chelsea.

Danny Shittu goes very deep to take a throw in and while he doesn't send it as far as one of Freddy Guarín's, it's still getting to Cristiano Lucarelli who's just inside their penalty area. He's fighting with a defender for the header and he's pushed off! PENALTY!!! Scott Donnelly strikes a bullet through the keeper's body for the 1-0 goal!

We double our lead only 6 minutes later when Peter Lovenkrands plays a lovely long cross, 50 yards forward, ahead of Lucarelli. He takes it home and makes it 2-0!

Dang, I thought we were hot, but we fall right back flat and they move the ball easily, taking one back in the 17th minute.

The halftime score is 2-1. We're outshooting them 16(12) to 2(1), woah! The tiny letdown that gave them their only goal was our only bad time.

In the 74th minute, Lucarelli's hard shot is stopp, but Jon Dahl Tomasson is there for the rebound, burying it for the 3-1 goal.

In the 86th minute, Tomasson gets away from two defenders after receiving a nice pass from Fabrice Fernandes. He scores his second of the game, 5th of the season to make it 4-1.

Tomasson and Lucarelli team up again in the 89th minute when Tomasson centers it perfectly to Lucarelli's head. An easy goal to make it 5-1.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 5, Peterborough 1

We outshot them 28(10) to 4(2) Attempting near 30 shots in one game is one thing, to put 19 on target is another one. Dang, I've seen NHL team with less shots on target than that in a game...

Cristiano Lucarelli was selected as Man of the Match, getting a rating of 10 with two goals, 2 assists, and placing 7 of 11 shots on target Scott Donnelly and Cedric van der Gun both rated at 9 while most everybody else rated at 8.

We've been given $52k for the win and we're through to round 4.

Fábio Rochemback
has agreed a deal with Lille and is set to move at the start of the next transfer window, on January 1st. We will receive $1.5M for the transfer. Considering we signed him on a free transfer, that's not completely bad...

The draw for the 4th round of the Carling Cup happens today. 16 teams are left. REVENGE!!! We will play Norwich on their pitch. I hope you remember that they ousted us from the FA Cup in the 3rd round last season. I know I do... The game is to take place on November 27.

World Cup 2010 in S. Africa update:

Brazil win the world cup.

I tempted to resign from Brazil and Chelsea...

And go down to lower level team and bring them up to the top...

just curious: are their other money-crazy owners in the game? i mean, i've got a 140m pound transfer budget...

League Match #11: we play Chelsea on their pitch. They're currently in 2nd place with 22 points on 11 games played while we have 17 points on 10 games played. They are 4-5 favourites to win this game.

Bonaventure Kalou suffered a chest injury yesterday and is four days away from being completely healthy. As a result, his condition is only at 83%. I still give him the start.

Robin Van Persie is suspended for Chelsea.

Raúl Sánches shows up as unhappy. He apparently wants a more important role at the club.

This game is on TV. They are presenting Ronaldo as Chelsea's key man, saying the experienced striker is a quality striker and can be relied upon to hit the back of the net. Our key man is Simon Jentzsch and they add that Q.P.R. have only conceded 9 goals in the 12 games that the goalkeeper has played in. They're predicting a tight game that Q.P.R. will lose. Chelsea are on a high and home advantage should be enough to get them the victory.

AHHH CRAP! Only 27 seconds have passed one a shot gets deflected twice in front of Simon Jentzsch before finding the back of the net. Down 0-1 early on.

We fight back and we tie it in the 14th minute when Cristiano Lucarelli bends a nice kick from 25 yards out after receiving a nice pass from Bonaventure Kalou. Tied 1-1!

We even thought we had taken the lead in the 28th minute when Christian Wilhelmsson scored on a rebound but Lucarelli was deemed to be offside. We are indeed applying some pressure.

Pressure, pressure, they can put pressure too and we see that in the 38th minute when they regain the lead off a long shot from Xavi. Jentzsch touched it but couldn't keep it from crossing the line. Down 1-2

Christian Wilhelmsson collects his second yellow of the game and is sent off in the 42nd minute. Just what we needed, try to mount a comeback at 10 vs 11, on the road, against Chelsea. Just lovely... Kalou's condition has dropped to 68% and the half isn't even over. I pull him out and put Damiano Zenoni on the right wing.

The halftime score is 1-2 and while they are outshooting us on shots overall, 10 to 7, we're outshooting them on target 4 to 3. They are however kicking our butts in possession with 53% but 26 to 13 in our end of the field.

Zenoni gets dispossessed from the ball near our penalty area only one minute into the second half. Abubakari Yakubu, usually fairly solid, let's it go loose and doesn't challenge their striker who centers it and they score to make it 1-3.

Freddy Guarín really isn't having one of his best games and he too let's the ball go loose in the middle of our half. They take it and score again. Down 1-4. Simon Jentzsch must feel he had a chance and didn't make the save since his form rating has dropped to 5.

We keep fighting though and in the 65th minute, Juanfran plays a wonderful long pass ahead of Peter Lovenkrands. One-on-One with the keeper, he doesn't miss his chance and it's now 2-4.

But the shit keeps hitting the fan and only two minutes later, Youssouf Hersi backs into Vincent Kompany inside our penalty area. PENALTY!!! Simon Jentzsch is on fire though and HE SAVES IT then STOPS THE REBOUND!!! Jentzsch is ready to stop everything, now rated at 9!!!

Too little, too late?!? 52 seconds into injury time, Jon Dahl Tomasson holds up just inside the centerline until Lucarelli gets running. He spots his run and launches a nice pass over everybody's head, just ahead of Lucarelli who scores his second of the game and 10th of the season. Down 3-4.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 3, Chelsea 4

AAAARRRGGG!!!! That was the wildest game I've witnessed in a long while. Shots ended being 17(12) for us, 18(8) for them but we simply ran out of time. Remember, the whole second half was with us playing one man down.

Our defensive back four simply collapsed as Yakubu, Cygan, and Shittu all rated at 6. Add to this Guarín and his 5 rated performance, Wilhelmsson's two yellows and Zenoni's 6 as his replacement and you have a recipe for disaster against Chelsea... sigh...

Speaking of Wilhelmsson, he has been banned for one match following his sending off.

Cristiano Lucarelli strained his groin and will miss two weeks while receiving physiotherapy treatments.

Youssouf Hersi sprained a wrist and will miss one week.

My assistant informs me that Jody Morris was absent from training today. Seeing how he has next to no chances of cracking the first team lineup before his contract runs out in June 2009, I offer him a mutual termination of his contract. He agrees to terminate his contract for a fee of $278k. Let's see, he's got one year (52 weeks) plus another six months from January to June (26 weeks) and another 8 weeks to get to January, so that is 86 weeks at his current salary of $5000 per, that is about $430k. I say yes and where do I sign?

October 31, 2007
Generoso Rossi
has disappointed supporters at the club by publicly announcing his intention to see out his contract and move under the Bosman ruling at the end of his contract. Ever since he started pulling all these bad games in a row, I lost confidence in him. Compare him to Simon Jentzsch, he wasn't able to recover from a bad start in a game, while Jentzsch has shown that a rating of 5 or 6 early on doesn't mean he won't finish the game strong...

November 1st, 2007
The board and the fans are still delighetd with my work as manager of the club. I find that reassuring...

Cristiano Lucarelli's bending shot goal against Chelsea came in second for Goal of the Month. Nice.

EUFA Cup group stage, Match #1: we play Lazio at Loftus Road. They're currently in 16th place in the Italy Serie A and in a major funk this season. Prior to this season they'd never finished any lower than 9th place in the last ten years. They lost 1-4 to Real Sociedad in their first group stage match and are evens favourites to win this game.

We're in trouble at the AMC spot as Youssouf Hersi is injured and Bonaventure Kalou's condition is very low. Cedric van der Gun gets the start. Even more, we play Manchester United in three days so I'll sit Kalou from this one completely.

This game is on TV and Simon Jentzsch is presented as our key man. The Rs have conceded only 13 goals in the 13 games that the goalkeeper has played in. Striker Rubén Castro is Lazio's. He has scored 6 goals in 13 appearances this season. They are predicting a draw for this game...

They show a 3-4-3 formation to start the game.

We take the lead early on when Fabrice Fernandes plays a corner kick short to Christian Wilhelmsson who wates no time centering it to the near post where Danny Shittu is waiting to head it in. Up 1-0 after 8 minutes!

They tie it in the 23rd minute after they catch our defensive napping with a long pass over everybody's head and their striker ran right past Abuabakari Yakubu to beat Simon Jentzsch one-on-one. Tied 1-1. Dang guys, give your keeper a chance!

This is the halftime score and we're getting outshot 11(5) to 4(3). That wasn't a pretty half although we did spend a whole lot of time on their end of the field. Freddy Guarín needed the physio early on and his condition is only at 68% at the half. I pull him out and replace him with Damiano Zenoni.

We get a great sequence moving the ball in the 73rd minute and it ends with a lovely overhead kick by Jon Dahl Tomasson on a center from Peter Lovenkrands to the 6 yard box. The keeper can't do a thing about that kick and we're up 2-1.

I decide to pull back the troups a bit and I Cedric van der Gun is taken out of the game and replaced by Pascal Cygan as a 5th defender. We go with a 5-1-2-2 formation.

We've put the lid on them and we control the ball from there on out and in the 83rd minute, Steve Finnan plays a nice 60 yards pass forward, ahead of Lovenkrands. All alone with the keeper, he shakes him out and scores the 3-1 goal.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 3, Lazio 1

I'd call that an "intelligent" win, as we got outshot 17(7) to 11(7) but we had the right tactics to convert our chances.

Fabrice Fernandes was selected as Man of the Match with a rating of 9. Christian Wilhelmsson, Cedric van der Gun, and Peter Lovenkrands all rated at 8.

We received $160k for the win and the $1.3M we collected in gate receipts for this game was a record high for Q.P.R.

Among other games in Group D, Real Sociedad won easily, 3-0, over Hannover 96. Here's the Group D table as it stands now:

Hannover 96 and Lazio have already both suffered two losses...

Only three days after their defeat against us, Lazio have decided to sack their manager Alberto Zaccheroni...

The Ivory Coast squad has to be decided for our upcoming friendlies against Nigeria (11/10) and Cameroon (11/14). Following cschex's tip, I have found a few new players to add to the Ivory Coast national pool. Maybe most interesting is a 28yo Spaniard/Ivorian D RC who's never played for Spain and frankly may not be good enough for them and might not be a top of the crop defender for us, but could do the trick in case of injury.

League Match #12: we play Manchester United at Loftus Road. They are currently in 1st place and have not lost since August 24, when Juventus beat them in the European Super Cup... They are 4-6 favourites to win this game.

Following his sending off in our previous game, Christian Wilhelmsson is banned for this game. Scott Donnelly gets the start.

Michael Ball starts in place of Juanfran.

I move Grzegorz Rasiak to the reserves squad. He isn't getting much playing time with the first team unit.

Despite a whole lot of pressure applied to our back four, we hold on until they get a free kick on the left wing. It's centered and the header finds the back of the net. There just was too much pressure for us not to let one in at one point.

0-1 is the halftime score and they're outshooting 9(5) to 5(3) although we are controlling the ball well, winning possession with 53%. Thing is we are not getting out of our end and when that happens, you usually lose one ball and they convert it, as they did in the first half.

Dang! While we started the half nicely, we let them not only run around, but even walk around with the ball in the 75th minute. They convert a long shot to put us down 0-2.

We keep fighting however and Bonaventure Kalou gets the chance of a lifetime in the 80th minute, but he hits the crossbar!!!

Striker Louis Saha is sent off for a second yellow in the 89th minute and they go to a 4-4-1, but it's way too late for us to do anything with it...

Final Score: Q.P.R. 0, Manchester United 2

While they still outshot us 16(10) to 10(6), we controlled the ball on their end of the field in the second half. Siply frustrating that we could never convert...

Kalou and Jentzsch were our two best players in that game, both rating at 8.

We drop to 10th place with the loss but the season is still young...

Crystal Palace want youngster Lee Porter on loan for three months. A few other offers have been made that I have not reported, but I decide to accept this one, seeing how Crystal Palace have top training facilities.

Carling Cup, Round 4: we play Norwich on their pitch. They are currently in 3rd place in the Championship and we are 4-5 favourites to win this game.

Don't know if you remember our last encounter with them, but I do. It was in the 3rd round of the FA Cup a year ago, when they beat us 1-2 to end our cup run prematurely.

We don't play until November 17 after this game.

Dang, we're getting many quality chances but we're putting the ball in the stands more than on the net and after 45 minutes, the game is still scoreless. We are outshooting them 8(3) to 3(1). I'm wary of long passes over our defenders...

We get another great chance in teh 50th minute when Pascal Cygan puts his head to an incoming header, but the ball hits the crossbar!!!

The shit hits the fan in the 75th minute when, in the middle of a scramble, Danny Shittu gets hit by the ball near our 6 yard box and he scores an own goal. Down 0-1...

I can't write all the expletives that went through my teeth as the bottom of the screen flashed the words "FINAL WHISTLE" but there were many...

Final Score: Q.P.R. 0, Norwich 1

We outshot them 13(7) to 8(2), complete and absolute bad luck, very frustrating even though it is not in league play. To think that your most reliable defender could be the cause of the only goal, the one that made you lose, well, I don't know what to say... We also were called for 14 fouls compared to only 8 for them...

Fabrice Fernandes was selected as Man of the Match in the loss, rating at 9 with 8 key passes. Everybody else rated at 7.

With that loss, we're out of the Carling Cup.

International Friendly: Ivory Coast play Nigeria on their pitch.

Kind of interesting, I'll be watching Danny Shittu on the other side of the field...

Yago, the 28yo Spaniar/Ivorian D RC I was talking about earlier, could get his first cap for the Ivory Coast today.

The first half ends scoreless with us shooting from about every possible angle. We're outshooting them 10(2) to 4(3).

After Arouna had put three shots off target since the start of the of the second half, two of them on the side netting, Nigeria mount an attack as they go all the way, from one byline to the other and after a shot which was blocked, they take the lead on a fluke goal off the rebound. Down 0-1 after 52 minutes.

I asked the team to go forward a lot for the last twenty minute and we pay for it in the 82st as they are able to take the ball inside and score from close range. Down 0-2.

Final Score: Ivory Coast 0, Nigeria 2

A real downer. We outshot them 17(5) to 8(6) but as you can see, failed miserably with our finishing...

Arouna was especially bad, rating at 6 and only putting 1 of his 5 shots on target.

I get some Q.P.R. news after the game as Lee Porter has agreed to go on loan at Crystal Palace.

Cristiano Lucarelli
resumes full training after going through physiotherapy. Hopefully, he can gain enugh condition to play in our next game. We're missing his goal scoring ability right now...

November 13, 2007
Grzegorz Rasiak
has stated that he must be playing regular first team football if he is to stay at Loftus Road. The 28yo striker has also said that if he doesn't play regular first team football soon, he will start looking for a new club. Hrm, I guess his injuries of the last couple seasons never gave him a chance to get on my good side. I mean he isn't a bad striker, but compared to Güiza, I'll be more inclined to give a start to Güiza than to Rasiak...

Jonathan Burton was selected as Man of the Match in England U21's friendly win over Slovenia. He rated at 8 with 10 interceptions as a centreback.

November 14, 2007
Two injuries have hit the Ivory Coast squad. Eli Kroupi, with a damaged shoulder, and Julien N'Da, with a strained neck, have both been pulled from the squad. I move 21yo Cheik Ismael Tiote from the U21 squad to make up for the losses.

Our upcoming Arsenal match has been rearranged from November 17 to January 5 due to international call-ups...

yeah, and not much I can do about. I only hope they will all stay healthy when the real competitive matches will start...

That's one thing about managing a national team. You don't really have to shop around for players, no transfers or such, you simply manage...

International Friendly: Ivory Coast play Cameroon at home. They are currently ranked 35th in the world while we are 44th so it should bring us a good challenge.

They show a very narrow 4-1-3-2 formation. That's 1 DMC, 3 MC and 2 SC all in the middle.

We applied some pressure early on but they are the ones who take the lead in the 8th minute, after a long pass is sent near Yago who let's go of his man who then fakes our keeper pretty well. Down 0-1.

We get right back to them when Bonaventure Kalou is tackled near their penalty area. The ball rolls to their keeper who tries a clearance that hits Didier Drogba right in the head and he scores to make it 1-1

We're really moving the ball well and this sequence in the 20th minute is a pure beauty. With baby steps, we took the ball from the Cedric Konan on the left sideline to a bit further down the middle to Drogba, then to Arouna Koné and finally to Bonaventure Kalou who nails it for the 2-1 goal!

Another great play, only 6 minutes later when Didier Drogba holds up play to allow his teammates to go forward. He the plays a nice ball to Bonaventure Kalou's feet who spots the Koné moving and he sent him a nice pass just behind their centreback. Koné has an easy goal. Up 3-1!

We add to our lead with a lucky goal in the 33rd minute when a free kick from Drogba from 25 yards out is deflected by the wall. Up 4-1!

As if we didn't have enough injury out of the formal international games, we lose two more in the first half. Cedric Konan has to be replaced by Kanga Gauthier Akalé in the 37th minute and our keeper, Gérard Amoukou Gnanhouan, also has to leave the field in the 45th minute. I replace him with uncapped Stephan Loboué, a player recently added to the national pool. It'll at least lock him with us in case of future need...

4-1 is the halftime score and we're dominating them, especially in shots, 10(6) to 6(1).

We don't pull back yet though and in the 72nd minute, Akalé's industrious effort down the left side leads to a nice center to Yaya. His shot is blocked by their keeper, but he leaves a long rebound that goes wide and Tchiressoua Guel is there to convert it. Up 5-1!

They take one back in the 75th minute with a very nice individual effort on the right finishing with a nice center headed behind our keeper. Still up, 5-2!

GRRRR! They take another one back in the 81st minute when a corner kick is headed straight in. Now 5-2. Come on guys!!!

Final Score: Ivory Coast 5, Cameroon 3

We outhsot them 17(10) to 11(3) on the game.

Didier Drogba was selected as Man of the Match, rating at 9 with 2 goals and 3 of 4 shots on target. Bonaventure Kalou and Arouna Koné both rated at 8.

This closes our friendly schedule for the 2007 season. I'll have to check what's next with the squad.

Looking at the 2008 list of fixtures for the Ivory Coast National Team, I'm a bit freaked out. Look at this:

Huhoh, the African Cup of Nations?!? I've avoided missing any time with The Rs so far, but I'm wondering what will happen during those two weeks in late January/early February... I guess it's wait and see for now...

It's now Scott Donnelly's turn to shine with the England U21 squad. Just like Jonathan Burton earlier, he was just selected as Man of the Match in a Euro U21 Championship qualifier match against Austria. It was the second leg of their series which England won 5-0 on agreggate. Donnelly rated at 8 in this game, scoring England's only goal.

EUFA Cup group stage, Match #2: we play German side Hannover 96 on their pitch. They are 5-4 favourites to win this game and even though they have already lost their first two EUFA group play matches so far they seem on a high with great team morale.

We play in three days and I'll keep that in mind when planning my substitutions.

Freddy Guarín is away on international duty as Colombia is playing a World Cup qualifier today.

Cristiano Lucarelli is back and I start him even though he isn't really match fit.

I try something and set our tactics to a longer passing style with a bit faster tempo than we're used to. We'll see how it goes...

This game is on TV and midfielder Christoph Dabrowski is presented as Hannover's key man. They point out that he has created 7 goals in 18 games so far this season. Simon Jentzsch is presented as our key man and they say that his teammates can be confident of not conceding too many with him in goal. They also say that this game has draw written all over it and that they just can't separate the two sides.

They show a very balanced 3-5-2 formation to start the game, with 5 midfielders on a straight line in the middle.

Cristiano Lucarelli shows me why I love having him in the lineup in the 13th minute, as he powers one through from 25 yards out. It goes in for the 1-0 goal. Jon Dahl Tomasson fed him the nice ball that lead to the scoring opportunity.

We hang on pretty well for the rest of the half but in the 43rd minute, they try a long center. Abubakari Yakubu is a bit overeager and pushes a striker inside our penalty area. PENALTY!!! They score to make it 1-1 just before the half.

Teams are tied at the half but we're outshooting them 5(3) to 2(1).

I don't know what kind of adjustment or pep talk they had at the half, but they are frigging eating us alive for the first 10 minuts of the second half. They score one through the middle in the 56th minute to make it 1-2.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 1, Hannover 96 2

We outshot them 10(5) to 7(4) and dang, these were not long range shots but some quality shots from close range. Dang bad luck continues... grrr...

Danny Shittu was selected as Man of the Match in the loss. He rated at 8, winning 10 of 11 tackles, 8 of 9 headers and intercepting 7 balls. Simon Jentzsch, Christian Wilhelmsson, and Peter Lovenkrands also had good games, all of them also rating at 8.

In the other game of Group D, Real Sociedad clinched qualification to the knockout stage by winning 3-1 over Pasching. Here's what the group table looks like right now:

League Match #13: we play Southampton at Loftus Road. Theyr are currently in 14th place and we are 6-4 favourites to win this game.

We've slipped to 13th place with so many games rearranged to later date because of international call-ups and what not, and some players are growing restless. Fabrice Fernandes, Cristiano Lucarelli, and Michael Ball all feel the team is underachieving. Güiza not only believes that, but he's apparenlty also lost confidence in me... Better win some league games before it all goes to hell...

Southampton are on a high after winning a couple of games.

Surprisingly, they are showing a 4-1-2-1-2 wide diamond formation exactly like our, with the exception of not having up arrows on the wingers. I don't see that formation too often on other teams and I always feel weird seeing two near identical squad screens in the match preview... I tried something and added an arrow up to Bonaventure Kalou so he'll basically play like a third striker...

We have numerous chances early on but it takes a nice clearance from Simon Jentzsch to Steve Finnan in the 37th minute to start us on our day to our first goal. Finnan played the ball forward to Cristiano Lucarelli on the right, where he was left with little angle to the goal. He tried to thread one in anyway and hit the crossbar, rebounding all the way to Güiza in the middle. With a diving header, Güiza makes it 1-0!

That's the halftime score and we're outshooting them 9(5) to 1(0). We'Re even winning possession with 56%, now we have to hang in there and not drop that tiny lead with a stoopid penalty call...

Ahhh, good old Rangers! In the 87th minute, Cedric van der Gun plays the ball ahead of Güiza. Their keeper rushed out but Güiza is quick enough to go around him and knock in his second of the game for 2-0 goal!

Final Score: Q.P.R. 2, Southampton 0

We're up to 11th with still a game on hand over many teams just ahead of us. 6th place is reachable with a win in our next game. This game was a huge morale booster although the team board still think the team should be holding a higher position in the EPL...

Güiza was selected as Man of the Match with a rating of 8 and two goals. He put all four of his shots on target. Tough luck though, as he also sprained a wrist in the game and will miss one week. That's some sucky timing as he looked ready to really contribute... Michael Ball, Danny Shittu, and Peter Lovenkrands all played well to, all rating at 8.

Michael Ball
and Danny Shittu have both been selected to the EPL Team of the Week. Ball has been playing especially well this season, outplaying newcomer Juanfran in the games he's played. I may start using him a bit more, or at least regularly platooning him with Juanfran.

Five of our matches have been picked up for live television coverage in the second half of our season. They are:
01/14, at Tottenham
02/04, vs Fulham at Loftus Road
03/24, vs Chelsea at Loftus Road

EUFA Cup group stage, Match #3: we play Austrian side Pasching at Loftus Road. Since Austria isn't part of the countries selected in my universe, I have no clue where they stand in their league, but they did beat Hannover 96, 1-0. We are evens favourites to win this game.

Abubakari Yakubu suffered a thigh sprain two days ago and is still three days from being completely healthy. I sit him out and start Pascal Cygan in his place.

In the 21st minute, Bonaventure Kalou plays a nice ball down the right wing for Jon Dahl Tomasson. Tomasson takes it to the byline before centering it, backward, to Cristiano Lucarelli on the edge of the 6 yard box. That's just too easy for Luca who makes it 1-0.

That is the halftime score and we're outshooting them 8(4) to 2(0). We spent a lot of time within their penalty area in that half...

Raúl Sánchez is tripped as he enters their penalty area in the 78th minute. The referee looks over to his assistant... AND HE POINTS THE SPOT! PENALTY!!! Freddy Guarín fires a bullet to make it 2-0.

Raúl Sánchez is showing that, under the right conditions, he's got everything to be a good striker for us and in the 86th minute, he makes 3-0 with some great finishing.

Final Score: Q.P.R. 3, Pasching 0

We outshot them 20(10) to 5(1).

Fabrice Fernandes was selected as Man of the Match with a rating of 9. He had 7 runs pas opponents in the game. Freddy Guarín, Steve Finnan, Cristiano Lucarelli, and Raúl Sánchez all rated at 8. Guarín put 6 of 9 shots on target.

In the other Group D game, Lazio won 2-0 over Hannover, thus knocking off Hannover's last chance at qualifying for the knockout stage. Here is the table as it stands now, with one round of games still to be played:
PosInfTeamPldWonDrnLstForAgG.D.Pts
1stQR. Sociedad3300102+89
2ndQ.P.R.320173+46
3rdLazio310247-33
4thPasching310226-43
5thHannover 96410327-53

With the top three teams qualifying for the knockout stage, and Lazio and Pasching set to plat each other in their last game, we have unformally clinched a pass to the knockout stage. Whatever happens in our match against Real Sociedad won't matter, as only one of Pasching and Lazio can get the three points needed to reach us.

No, no, no. It's "The Shittu hits the ball"!

Er, please excuse my lack of sleep-induced delirium.
