Nov. 2014 Wrap-Up

Unfortunately I'm an idiot and forgot to release the preseason top 25 polls, so I have no idea which of our teams was ranked.

Let's take a look at tournament action from this month.

2014 Anaheim Invitational

Kapaun Mt. Carmel opened the tournament with a near upset against (3) USC, losing 65-64. Then in the losers bracket semifinals, they were hammered by (7) Loyola-IL 97-62. They did rebound to win the 7th place game against (8) Binghmaton 80-76.

2014 Coaches Invitational

Wichita East won their first round game against (8) Milwaukee 63-44, before losing in the quarterfinals to top seed Florida 65-56.

2014 Island Invitational

Wichita North hammered (7) Southern Utah 88-68 in the first round, then beat (3) Georgia 75-65 in the semifinals. The championship was a battle between the top 2 seeds, but (1) Boston College won the battle 76-66. Still a second place finish for the Redskins isn't bad.

2014 Maui Shootout

Wichita Southeast lost to (4) Stanford 79-63 in the first round, then in the losers bracket semifinals, lost to (8) Providence 77-67. So another GWAL team going for 7th place, but it was not to be. The Buffaloes finish off a very dissapointing tournament by losing to (7) Bradley 71-56.

2014 Philadelphia Invitational

An upset in the first round, as (7) Hawaii knocks off (2) Wichita Heights 80-78. In the semifinals, Hawaii got hammered by (3) Louisville 85-56, while the Falcons lost to (6) Charlotte 67-53 in the consolation round. In the 7th place game, the Falcons kept the GWAL embarassment alive by losing to (8) Weber St. 68-51. Hawaii rallied to hammer (5) LSU 81-64 for third place.

2014 Puerto Rico Challenge

Wichita West opened the tournament by beating (4) Missouri St. 104-97 in OT. Then in the semifinals they were hammered by top seed Texas 85-54. In the third place game, the Pioneers beat (3) New Mexico 65-52.

2014 Vision Classic

Wichita Northwest opened the tournament by beating (4) Northern Illinois 71-59, then won the Vision Classic with a defensive struggle, beating (2) Rice 45-31. Good job Mitch Linn! Even though it wasn't a real strong tournament, it's always nice to bring home a championship.

Here are the GWAL standings thru November 2014.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 0 0 .000 6 1 .857 43 60 Wichita South Titans 0 0 .000 4 2 .667 110 63 Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 0 .000 4 1 .800 323 54 Wichita North Redskins 0 0 .000 3 1 .750 51 68 Wichita West Pioneers 0 0 .000 3 2 .600 85 60 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 0 .000 2 1 .667 191 64 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 0 .000 2 3 .400 302 73 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 0 .000 1 5 .167 135 53 Wichita Heights Falcons 0 0 .000 1 4 .200 280 87

The big dissapointment right now is Wichita Heights. They better figure it out soon.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) stands at 3-2 right now. After their 3rd place finish in the Philadelphia Invitational, they lost to Rutgers but beat Northwestern.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) stands at 2-3 right now. They had a big upset win against Minnesota, but also lost to Kennesaw State.

The top 25 polls right now have 1 GWAL team receiving votes.

Dec. 2014 Wrap-Up

2 more tournaments were played this month, and lets take a look at those.

2014 Las Vegas Shootout

Wichita South took out (12) Central Florida 79-63 in the first round, then was hammered by (4) Ole Miss 81-52 in the quarterfinals.

2014 San Juan Classic

Bishop Carroll won their opening game against (3) Iowa St. 66-52, then lost a tough one in the semifinals to (2) Mississippi St. 74-62. In the third place game, they rallied to beat a top 10 ranked (4) San Diego St. team 68-58. Good job Deacon Palmer.

Here are the GWAL standings through December, and it's really not that impressive.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita West Pioneers 1 0 1.000 6 8 .429 106 60 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 0 0 .000 11 2 .846 14 60 Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 0 .000 9 4 .692 132 54 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 1 .000 7 5 .583 203 73 Wichita Heights Falcons 0 0 .000 7 6 .538 267 87 Wichita South Titans 0 0 .000 6 6 .500 49 63 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 0 .000 6 6 .500 77 64 Wichita North Redskins 0 0 .000 6 5 .545 85 68 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 0 .000 1 13 .071 307 53

When I edited the game to make us a prestige 4 conference and a mid-major, I was expecting a consistent top 25 appearance for some of our teams, and long runs in the NCAA tournament. We've had neither of those so far, except for Wichita Heights, who is down this year. I'm happy that we are competing well in the preseason tournaments and the NIT, but I want more, dangit! More!!

Bishop Carroll (Deacon Palmer) has really turned the corner, and the third place finish in a tough tournament tells me they are ready for bigger things. They've also had nice wins against Arkansas and TCU. The losses to Texas Southern, Montana State, and Seattle could hurt though if the Eagles are a bubble team in March.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel (Shane Kormelink) has not turned any corner, and may actually be worse than they were last season. There's already talks of the Crusaders being demoted to a prestige 3 conference next season. If they stay a member of the GWAL, I just can't see how Korme will keep his job here, unless things change quickly!

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) is just average this year. As of this point they have no big wins and no key losses. They did defeat a Wichita St. team that appears to be pretty good, but they have looked bad in blowout losses to Kansas St., Oklahoma, and Oklahoma St. Hopefully their conference season will vault them into another postseason appearance.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) has rebounded somewhat from their 0-3 start. They had a nice win against Kansas St., but a blowout loss to Wichita St. won't help their cause come March. Neither will losing their conference opener to Wichita West. Rudy still has some work to do.

Let's take a look at our 2 Non-GWAL FOFCer teams thru December.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 6-7, 1-0 CAA. There are 2 results from the early season schedule that tell a lot about the potential that ol' Charlie has: A 75-48 smashing of Auburn, and an 80-78 loss to in-state rival Georgia Tech, a team that is currently ranked 10th in the nation. This Georgia State team could be a force in CAA play this season.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 7-6, 0-0 WAC. The biggest win for Hawaii so far is still the upset against Wichita Heights. They've beaten Baylor and Wyoming in their last 2 games, and also had tough losses against top 25teams Ohio, Oregon, and Memphis. Only a few points separate the Rainbows from having double digit wins right now.

The standings are up for the end of January, and I could honestly cry.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 8 1 .889 18 5 .783 62 54 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 5 4 .556 16 7 .696 41 60 Wichita West Pioneers 5 4 .556 10 13 .435 152 60 Wichita North Redskins 4 5 .444 11 10 .524 133 68 Wichita South Titans 4 5 .444 10 11 .476 167 63 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 4 5 .444 12 9 .571 210 73 Wichita Heights Falcons 4 5 .444 11 12 .478 261 87 Wichita East Blue Aces 3 5 .375 10 11 .476 141 64 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 3 6 .333 4 20 .167 337 53

Other than Bishop Carroll and Northwest, the GWAL is crap this year. Only 4of our 9 teams even have a winning record. In fact, at this point we could be looking at only 3 teams playing in the postseason. Yuck!

Bishop Carroll (Deacon Palmer) is showing that their performance last year wasn't a fluke. They are the real deal, and their only conference loss is to Northwest. Nothing to be ashamed of at all.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel (Shane Kormelink) surprised me a little bit in January. They actually won 3 games. They have conference wins against Southeast, and they swept North. That could be big for Shane's future. And KMC's. They are still in jeopardy of leaving the conference though.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) has been up and down, but have lost their lost 3 games to Northwest, North, and East. Their shining moment in January was a 23 point stomping of Southeast.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) has a huge mark against then. A loss to Kapaun. This could be crucial when it comes to postseason play. They really need a great February. They did have nice wins against Northwest and West to finish the month, so they are heading in the right direction.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 12-10, 7-3 CAA, T-1st. Not only is Georgia State not in last place in the conference, but they are actually tied for first. I'd have to think Charlie might be in the running for CAA coach of the year if he keeps it up. Unfortunately the conference as a whole is pretty weak this season, but they did have a nice win at James Madison, who has the best overall record of all the CAA teams, at 13-7.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 10-11, 3-4 WAC, 6th. It's been another rocky start in conference play for B.B Gunn's group. They've actually beaten Gonzaga and Utah St., but they've had bad losses to New Mexico St. and Idaho. Hopefully they can turn the corner in February. They are right on the hump of being a solid team.

Here's a look at the GWAL Bubble Watch for the NCAA Tournament. No big surprises. Carroll and Northwest in, but not locks. Everybody else out.

These are the final GWAL Standings, and it wasn't even close.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 14 2 .875 24 6 .800 33 54 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 9 7 .563 20 10 .667 46 60 Wichita West Pioneers 9 7 .563 14 17 .452 138 60 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 8 8 .500 16 13 .552 207 73 Wichita North Redskins 8 8 .500 15 14 .517 191 68 Wichita Heights Falcons 8 8 .500 15 15 .500 229 87 Wichita East Blue Aces 8 8 .500 15 14 .517 157 64 Wichita South Titans 5 11 .313 12 17 .414 252 63 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 3 13 .188 4 27 .129 356 53

So Bishop Carroll wins the league with ease, and 4 teams tied with a .500 record in conference. This just proves the parity between seeds 2 and 7. Heck, even South and Kapaun are capable of an upset.

Bishop Carroll (Deacon Palmer) is rolling into the postseason. Their only loss in February was a 12 point loss to North. They even had a 31 point win against Southeast.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel (Shane Kormelink) had an 0 fer in February, just assuring 1 of 2 things. Either Kormelink will lead the Crusaders into a new conference next year, or he'll be fired IF KMC is lucky enough to stay in the GWAL. Either way, he's out of my hands.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) had an absolutely horrible February. They started the month by beating Kapaun and then proceeded to lose their next 6 games. They have a non-conference game against Drexel before an opening round GWAL tournament game against Kapaun.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) is definitely a letdown after the season they had last year. They also had a tough loss against Missouri State who is only 11-19. They have one non-conference game against New Mexico St. remaining.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 17-13, 12-6 CAA, T-1st. A good way to finish for ol Charlie, who I believe should be CAA Coach of the Year. The big win in February was a win against UNC-Wilmington.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 14-16, 7-9 WAC, 6th. So Hawaii stumbles to the finish in the WAC, losing their 2 conference games in March, and going .500 in February. Their last loss was a 24 point loss to a 10 win Boise State team.

2015 GWAL Championship

(1) Bishop Carroll beat (7) Wichita East 74-67 to win the GWAL Tournament Championship.

Bishop Carroll should have a high seed in the NCAA Tournament and could be the only GWAL team dancing. Wichita Northwest could steal an at-large bid but I think they will be a high seed in the NIT. Wichita Southeast will most likely be in the CBI, and Wichita East could sneak into the CIT, but their season may be done. As for the other 5 teams (Kapaun, Heights, West, South, North), I'd say they are all definitely done.

CAA Tournament

Georgia State beat (8) James Madison 64-57 in the second round, then lost a tough one to (4) UNC-Wilmington 52-48 in the semifinals. They could sneak into one of the minor tournaments. Even if they don't, its been a heck of a season for them.

WAC Tournament

Hawaii lost to (3) Gonzaga in the first round 65-58, ending their season.

Other Teams and Coaches of Interest

Arkansas (Ryan Hujing) -- Finished 15-17, 7-9, good for 4th in the SEC West. They beat (9) South Carolina 70-65 in the first round of the SEC Tournament, then lost to top seed Arkansas 64-48. Their season is probably done.

Xavier (Shane Dreiling) -- Finished 33-2, 14-2 in the A-10, good for 1st place. They beat (8) Temple 74-72 in the Quarterfinals of the A-10 tourney, then beat (12) Dayton 77-53 in the semifinals, then hammered (3) Rhode Island 82-61 in the title game. They should be a #1 seed in the big dance.

BYU (James Cole) -- 23-9, 13-3, good for 1st in the Mountain West. In the conference tournament they beat (8) Wyoming 59-46 in the quarterfinals, then got hammered by (5) San Diego St. 77-65 in the semifinals. They should still be in the NCAA Tournament.

Creighton (Marty Frankamp) -- 23-9, 13-5, MVC, good for 1st place. Conference Tournament- hammered (8) Illinois St. 98-73 in the quarterfinals, hammered (5) Wichita St. 67-39 in the semifinals, beat (2) Bradley 79-77 in the title game.

Arizona (Bryan Chadwick) -- 28-6, 15-3 Pac Ten, good for 1st place. Pac Ten Tourney- beat (9) Washington 67-66 in quarterfinals, beat (4) Cal 87-75 in semifinals, beat (6) USC 56-53 in championship.

Before I get to the selection sunday, I want to say that I am happy with my report on the non-GWAL, non-FOFC teams. Just 1 report at the end of the season definitely created for a lot less typing.

2015 Selection Sunday

GWAL

Wichita Northwest will take on Oklahoma St. in a play-in game for the NCAA Tournament. Winner gets the 12th seed in the Midwest Region and will take on (5) California.

Bishop Carroll gets the 8th seed in the NCAA South Region and gets (9) Oklahoma first round. I'm a little bit upset, second straight year the GWAL Tourney winner has had a 25+ win season and gotten an 8 seed. I guess it's being a new conference still and not being consistently good.

Wichita East got the 13th seed in the CBI and will travel to (4) Rhode Island.

Wichita Southeast gets the 5th seed in the CBI and will host (12) James Madison. Small chance East and Southeast could meet.

Kapaun, South, North, Heights, and West as expected all miss the postseason.

Non-GWAL

Georgia State gets the 9th seed in the NIT East Region and will travel to (8) Marshall in the play-in round. Winner travels to (1) Niagara.

Arizona got the #1 seed in the NCAA West Region and will face the winner of the play-in game between Elon and AR-Pine Bluff.

BYU got the 6th seed in the NCAA Midwest Region and takes on (11) VA Tech first round.

Creighton got the 11th seed in the NCAA South Region and takes on (6) North Carolina first round.

Xavier gets the 3rd seed in the NCAA East Region and will take on (14) Belmont first round.

Arkansas and Hawaii get no postseason.

Terrible, terrible season. Looks like both Chagulia and Gunn will be out on their collective rear ends.

2015 Postseason Wrap-Up

In the NCAA Tournament, the first semifinal was a match-up of cinderella teams as (12) Utah hammered (13) Lafayette 80-58. In my opinion the real national championship was between (1) Kansas and (4) Illinois, which Kansas won 75-63. Then Kansas hammered Utah in the championship game, 77-62.

The NIT saw (4) Indiana beat (2) Clemson 77-64 in one semifinal, then (2) UNLV beat (2) Arkansas-LR 89-80. The championship game was a doozy, as UNLV beat Indiana 61-58.

Once again the CBI championship went to all 3 games, as (4) Rhode Island beat (7) St. Josephs 2 games to 1. St. Joes won the first game 67-58. The Rhode Island won game 2, 63-62. Game 3 was a classic, as Rhode Island hit a three pointer at the buzzer to win 64-61.

The CIT championship pitted (2) San Francisco against (4) Rider. The Dons of San Francisco won 71-62.

To my surprise, Kapaun is still a member of the GWAL. In fact there was no movement at all this year. I say, when the game says limited conference movement, that's what it means. I could edit it to kick Kapaun out of the conference, but then I'd have to decide who to bring in. I'm not one for all this conference realignment crap, so I'll let the game AI decide all that.

I'm going to stop here for the night, and deal with awards and recruiting and coach movement next time I'm able to play FBCB. Normally I would carry on, but a buddy of mine has had a bad night and it has carried over to me, and my heart just isn't in it to carry on. Mr. Rudy Arellano, I know tonight wasn't good for us man, and I know it's gonna be tough for a while, but I hope things get better soon.

korme, I haven't heard from you for a while, so I just wanted to make sure you were still following. You will most likely be fired from your position at Kapaun. Do you want me to tell you any job offers you get, and let you pick? Or do you just want me to put you at a job I think is appropriate? Also, do you want to add another coach to the mix? I'm still looking for more FOFC coaches, so if you guys know anybody that uses FOFC that would be interested, please let em know. I would gladly take another 3 or 4 FOFC coaches. But Korme, let me know what you decide? Thanks

I'm happy to be one of the interactive coaches. I just need to read up on the dynasty a bit first, which I'll try to do today.

hoopsguy- Excellent. Other than a few offseason details I won't be adding much to the dynasty. Once I hit the coach movement, I expect some of the other human coaches to receive job offers in which I'll have to hold the dynasty until they tell me where they like to go. Just let me know when you've read the dynasty and have decided on a coach and a school. Thanks man.

Deacon Palmer took home 2 awards this season. In a surprise to nobody, he took home the GWAL Coach of the Year Award. However, he 1 upped himself by also being named National Coach of the Year! Congrats Deacon, I'm almost positive you will receive job offers from higher prestige schools now. Yannick Florquin of Hawaii was named to the all-american freshman team. Congrats to him. Now here's a look at the GWAL awards.

In the CAA, Charlie Woods took home CAA coach of the year, and Rodrick Dixon was named to the all-freshman team.

As far as the WAC goes, the previously mentioned Florquin took home WAC freshman of the year.

Talk about bigtime! The GWAL picked up 2 potential 5 star recruits that could really help their teams. Kudos to Wichita North and Wichita Southeast. Unfortunately, we still had schools that didn't recruit anybody.

Georgia State had the 108th best recruiting class in the nation, and 3rd best in the CAA.

Hawaii had the 119th best recruting class, but the WAC was tough in recruiting this year. 4 WAC schools had better recruiting.

2015 Coach Evaluations

FOFC/GWAL Coaches

Deacon Palmer (Bishop Carroll) -- Not much to say here, national coach of the year. The only way Deacon is leaving Bishop Carroll is if he chooses to do so because of a better offer.

Shane Kormelink (Kapaun Mt. Carmel -- While KMC did win a couple GWAL games last season, which was an improvent there, they aren't improving overall. And the fact that Shane didn't have any recruits last season sealed his fate. Sorry Korme, but you'll be looking for a new job.

Kuji Chaguilia (Wichita South) -- After an NIT Elite Eight appearance, I was expecting better for the Titans. They dissapointed me a bit. Kuji isn't on the hotseat, and South's roster isn't great, but he should at least be able to do enough with what he's got to earn a postseason berth this season.

Rudy Arellano (Wichita Southeast) -- 2 straight postseason appearences for the Buffaloes, although last season was a minor tournament. But it was still postseason, and right now Rudy's job is safe.

GWAL Coaches on Hotseat

Reggie Taylor (Wichita West) -- Reggie did enough to lead the Pioneers to a second place finish in the GWAL, but the fact that the Pioneers had a losing record still bugs me. He also has a roster good enough to be playing in the postseason. He's got his job for another year, but he's still on the hotseat. It's postseason or bust for him.

So the Kapaun job is the only job that needs filled. This is the part of the job I hate most, firing and replacing coaches. So far I haven't done so well in that department.

It didn't take me long to find Shane's replacement. Kapaun has been dismal in recruiting and they need somebody that can draw some recruits. Darrin Schoenfeld is a 37 year old rookie coach that has ratings of 100 in both recruiting and scouting. He also has ratings of 69 in offense and 51 in defense. But I just couldn't over look the perfect rating in recruiting. Mr. Schoenfeld is the new KMC coach in a hire that already has Dickie V over at ESPN talking. The raves are good, let's see if he lives up to the hype.

Head Coach Movement

Shane Kormelink got one job offer.. Bryant University. Their prestige is 1, their record was 7-22 last year. They are bad. Korme, do you want to take this job or see if you get any better offers in the next round?

Deacon Palmer also got 1 offer, from Cleveland St. They have a prestige of 46 and were 16-16 last year. I'm sure that Deacon will turn this down, but I'll leave it up to him.

This is where I stop, until I hear back from Korme and Deacon.

At your request Deacon, I have turned down the Cleveland St. job. Korme, I have turned down the job from Bryant for you.

The next round of coach movement saw some interesting moves. Shane Dreiling was hired at Clemson, leaving the Xavier job open. Also, Marty Frankamp was hired at Oklahoma. Which brings us to our human coaches.

Shane Kormelink was offered the job at Lafayette. They are a 35 prestige school out of the Patriot League. They were 27-10 last season and made it to the NCAA Final Four. Korme, if I were you, I'd jump on this job.

As for Deacon Palmer, he was offered jobs at Xavier and Creighton. He also was offered jobs from Memphis, Nevada, Saint Joseph's and Utah. All 6 offers are hard to turn down, the decision is up to you.

Sounds good, I will get that changed when I get home. I hate to lose you as a member of the GWAL, but good luck with your new school, the Creighton Bluejays.

Korme, I'm just going to accept the Lafayette job for you, I don't think you're going to get a better offer than that. Let me know if you're even still following. Thanks.

hoopsguy, whenever you're ready to jump in, if you let me know today, I can get you in for the upcoming season, or if you want to wait one more season, that's fine too.

Hopefully I will be getting a good jump on this within the next few hours. Thanks for all those still following and participating!

Shane Kormelink is now the head coach at Lafayette, and Deacon Palmer has taken over forMarty Frankamp at Creighton. Which means that I need to fill the Bishop Carroll job. Unfortunately I have to hire an assistant from another school, as per my rules. Since the last coach I hired was not an assistant, this one has to be.

I gotta tell ya, there are some really good coaches at the D2 level that are ready to move up (When I say D2 coach I really mean that these are coaches that are in the coaching database that don't seem to have any previous coaching history. I'm thinking the game just adds random coaches every season.) Unfortunately since per my own house rule, I have to hire a big time assistant for this spot, there's really only one choice.

James Davis has been hired as the new head coach for Bishop Carroll. He previously was the recruiting coordinator at Kansas. His ratings are: 89 recruiting, 60 scouting, 40 offense, 51 defense. I have confidence that he will hire a good assistant to help him with the offense and defense categories. He has been the recruiting coordinator at Kansas for the past 2 years, and led them to the #1 recruiting class in the nation last season. Hopefully he can have that kind of recruiting success at Bishop Carroll.

Wichita North is the 9th seed in the Coaches Invitational and will take on (8) Valparaiso in the first round.

Wichita Northwest gets the 4th seed in the Las Vegas Challenge, getting (5) Virginia first round.

Wichita Southeast is the 5th seed in the Maui Shootout and gets (4) Oregon in the first round.

Wichita West and Creighton are both in the Philadelphia Invitational. The Pioneers are seed 7th and get Pitt in the first round, while the Bluejays are seeded 3rd and get Dayton in the first round. If both of these teams lose, or if they both win, they'll face each other in the next round.

Wichita East is the 4th seed in the San Juan Classic and draws (5) Colorado first round.

Wichita South is the 4th seed in the 4 team Travelers Invitational and gets (1) Vanderbilt first round.

2015 GWAL Expectations

James Davis (Bishop Carroll) and Darrin Schoenfeld (Kapaun) are first year coaches in the GWAL, and they get a grace period of at least 1 year.

Safe Jobs

Rudy Arellano (Wichita Southeast) reached the postseason for a second straight year. Although it was only the CBI, the fact is he seems to have turned a corner. Not to mention he was 1 of 2 coaches in the GWAL to sign a 5 star recruit. His job is safe for another year.

Mitch Linn (Wichita Northwest) won an NCAA Tournament game last season and had a top 100 recruiting class last year. His job is also safe.

Chris Porter (Wichita North) had a 5 star recruit sign, and had the 23rd best recruiting class this past season, top in the GWAL. Even though North missed the postseason last year, that recruiting class could be enough to get them back to the big dance. His job is safe for another year at least.

On the Fence- Needs to Improve

Mike Brown (Wichita East) did lead the Blue Aces to the CBI, and did have a winning season, but barely. I need more out of him though. The Blue Aces should be seeing either the NCAA or NIT every year. He needs to get there this year.

Ralph Snowden (Wichita Heights) really dissapointed last year. The Falcons are the top prestige team in the GWAL, and for them to not even make the postseason is a hgue dissapointment. Another year without the postseason and Ralph may be looking for a new job.

Kuji Chagulia (Wichita South) took 10 steps back after that NIT Elite Eight finish last season. We can't afford for him to take another 10 steps back. I won't say it is postseason or bust for him, but he definitely needs to start taking steps forward again.

On The Hotseat

Reggie Taylor (Wichita West) has just been a huge dissapointment over the past 3 years. His time has ran out. It's either postseason or new job for him this season.

Charlie Woods (Georgia State) had a great season last year. He was CAA Coach of the Year and his seat is cool. He's expected to have a .500 conference record this season.

Deacon Palmer (Creighton) is entering his first year as Creighton coach. I don't know if the game AI gives grace periods like I do, but Creighton is expected to reach the Sweet Sixteen this season.

Shane Kormelink (Lafayette) may have gotten the best deal from being fired a coach could get. He leads Kapaun to an 0-17 GWAL record 2 seasons ago, wins 10 total games in the last 2 seasons, gets fired from Kapaun, and gets hired on at Lafayette, a team that was a cinderella team and made the Final Four last year. All he's expected to do is lead Lafayette back to the NCAA Tournament.

B.B. Gunn (Hawaii) hasn't seen his status change. Hawaii's AD appears to be content with B.B's job thus far, but he did stress to me that he would like to see Hawaii in the NCAA Tournament this season.

Nov. 2015 Wrap-Up

As we start the 2015-2016 season, no GWAL teams are ranked, nor are any of our other FOFCer teams. We've got some tournaments to cover, so let's get to it.

2015 Anaheim Invitational

Bishop Carroll started the tournament with a win against (5) DePaul, 56-51. Then they lost a hard fought battle to (1) Stanford, 63-61. In the third place game, they took a ranked (3) South Carolina team to OT before falling 72-71. Only 3 points separated Bishop Carroll from winning this tournament. Not a bad performance at all.

2015 Coaches Invitational

Wichita North beat (8) Valparaiso 74-72 in the first round, before falling to top seeded and 6th ranked Duke 78-58 in the Quarterfinals.

2015 GDS Classic

Hawaii started the tournament by hammering (10) Weber St. 91-63 in the First Round, then lost to (2) North Carolina 93-66 in the Quarterfinals.

2015 Las Vegas Challenge

Wichita Northwest dropped a heartbreaker to (5) Virginia in the first round, 48-47. In the consolation semifinals, they hammered (8) Colorado 89-66. In the fifth place game, a surprising (3) Texas A&M hammered the Grizzlies 94-67.

2015 Maui Shootout

Wichita Southeast lost a tough one to (4) Oregon 93-79. Then in the consolation semifinals, they beat (8) Davidson 77-69. In the fifth place game, they beat (7) Louisiana Tech 70-52. Not a bad finish after a dissapointing start.

2015 Paradise Shootout

Wichita Heights opened the tournament with a solid win over (5) Michigan 68-62. Then in the semifinals, they were upset by (8) Rhode Island 76-60. In the third place game, they rallied to beat (6) Nebraska 77-63. Rhode Island shocked everybody by beating the top 2 seeds, Georgetown and Kentucky, and a very good Falcon team to win this tournament.

2015 Philadelphia Invitational

Wichita West opened the tournament by upsetting (2) Pittsburgh 79-70. Creighton was upset by (6) Dayton 78-75. In the semifinals, the Pioneers stayed hot by beating (6) Dayton 67-56. In the consolation semifinals, the Bluejays beat (2) Pittsburgh 81-76. In the fifth place game Creighton lost to (1) Florida 69-57. In the most unlikely of championship games, between the lowest 2 seeds in the tournament, (7) Wichita West beat (8) Ohio 63-58 to win the Philadelphia Invitational. Nice start to getting off the hotseat for Reggie Taylor, with a holiday tournament victory.

2015 Travelers Invitational

Wichita South lost to (1) Vanderbilt in the first round, 89-79. Then in the third place game, they lost to (3) Wichita St. 84-70. Not a good start for Kuji.

The GWAL standings after November look like this:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita North Redskins 0 0 .000 4 1 .800 104 64 Wichita West Pioneers 0 0 .000 3 1 .750 25 59 Wichita Heights Falcons 0 0 .000 3 2 .600 154 80 Wichita South Titans 0 0 .000 3 2 .600 180 58 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 0 .000 3 3 .500 270 69 Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 0 .000 2 3 .400 115 58 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 0 .000 2 2 .500 142 48 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 0 .000 2 3 .400 197 63 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 0 0 .000 1 2 .333 287 63

Not bad, but not great either. Wichita South has rebounded nicely since opening the season 0-2, and Wichita Southeast is up and down.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) is off to a 3-1 start but hasn't really played anybody note worthy yet.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) is struggling right now at 1-4. Aside from the 1-2 performance in the Philadelphia Invitational, they've also lost to Oregon and Nebraska.

Lafayette (Shane Kormelink) is off to a 4-1 start so far, with decent wins against St. Peters and Pennsylvania.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) is 4-1 and had a big 42 point win against Minnesota.

Here are the top 25 polls as we enter December.

Code:

Dec. 2015 Wrap-Up

Only 1 tournament this month to tell you about.

2015 San Juan Classic

Wichita East opened the tournament by losing to (4) Colorado 73-55. Then in the consolation semifinals, they beat (8) SMU 86-82. In the fifth place game, the Blue Aces dropped a tough one to (2) Notre Dame, 57-56.

Here are the GWAL Standings through December.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita North Redskins 1 0 1.000 10 2 .833 113 64 Wichita Heights Falcons 1 0 1.000 9 4 .692 178 80 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 1 0 1.000 8 4 .667 88 63 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 1 0 1.000 5 7 .417 223 48 Wichita West Pioneers 0 1 .000 10 3 .769 79 59 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 1 .000 7 6 .538 114 69 Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 1 .000 7 7 .500 153 58 Wichita South Titans 0 0 .000 7 6 .538 256 58 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 1 .000 4 10 .286 201 63

At one point, the Redskins were ranked 24th in the nation, but they lost to McNeese St. in an upset. The next game they gave Georgia Tech their only loss so far.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) had a 3 game stretch where they lost to Arkansas St., Texas Pan-American, and TCU. Ouch! That's a season killer right there.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) had 2 bad losses to Green Bay and Colorado St., but followed that up with nice wins against Florida St. and Oklahoma. They just can't seem to build a consistent winning streak.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 4-8, 1-0 CAA. It's been a struggle for Charlie this year, as his team lost 5 in a row before winning their first conference game against James Madison.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 9-5, 3-0 MVC, T-1st. The Bluejays won 9 of their 10 games in December, with their only loss being an 11 point loss to a pretty strong Indiana team. Looks like Deacon is going to work his magic in Creighton soon.

Lafayette (Shane Kormelink) -- 8-5, 0-0 Patriot. They were 8-2 at one point but have lost their last 3 against Wagner, Milwaukee, and Seton Hall. I'd be surprised if they don't run through conference play though, as only 1 team other than Lafayette has a winning record right now.

B.B. Gunn (Hawaii) -- 9-2, 0-0 WAC. Not too long ago B.B. was wondering where he would be working next, expecting to be fired after a not so sharp season. But all he's done so far is lead Hawaii to a top 25 appearance, they currently stand at 21. While their schedule hasn't been daunting, they have taken care of business. They'll get tested in the WAC.

Here are the top 25 polls as we enter 2016.

Here are the standings after January, and boy are they much better looking than this time last year.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 7 2 .778 15 6 .714 65 63 Bishop Carroll Eagles 6 3 .667 13 10 .565 108 58 Wichita West Pioneers 6 3 .667 17 5 .773 55 59 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 5 4 .556 13 9 .591 71 69 Wichita North Redskins 4 5 .444 13 8 .619 113 64 Wichita Heights Falcons 4 5 .444 13 9 .591 109 80 Wichita East Blue Aces 3 6 .333 8 15 .348 129 63 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 3 6 .333 7 14 .333 213 48 Wichita South Titans 2 6 .250 10 12 .455 207 58

While there is still work to be done, I'll take 6 schools with a winning record for the moment.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) had a nice win against Wichita North, but they are really struggling in the GWAL this year. The Titans lost 6 of 9 games in January, by an average of 18 points a game.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) had a solid January, beating conference leader Wichita Northwest by 36 points. Their biggest downfall of the month was the 18 point loss to a struggling Wichita East.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 7-14, 4-6 CAA, 10th. Charlie hasn't had the same kind of success this season as he did last season, but 3 of their losses in January were by 4 points each, so they could easily have a winning conference record.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 14-8, 8-3 MVC, T-1st. There's nothing to sneeze about as the Bluejays lost to Southern Illinois, Wichita State, and Bradley in conference play so far. Those are 3 of the top 4 teams, with Creighton being the 4th team in the mix. Unfortunately the Bradley loss hurt, as it was by 26 points.

Lafayette (Shane Kormelink) -- 13-8, 4-3 Patriot, 2nd. A 3 game losing streak to American, Bucknell, and Holy Cross kind of dampered the month for Shane, but he still has a good thing going.

B.B. Gunn (Hawaii) -- 13-7, 3-4 WAC, 7th. Hawaii once again is having a bit of problem in the tough WAC. They are currently on a 4 game losing streak with an always tough Gonzaga looming next.
