Offseason News
Not much to report about, except we didn't lose any staff. Yay!
Don Powell of UCLA is the Coach of the Year for 2005.

2006 Offensive Breakdown
Quarterbacks
Our QB situation is just marginally better than last year. We're going to stick with Rodney Naquin (Sr) as our starter. He improved a bit, and hopefully he can keep those turnovers down. Lamar Mardeusz (Sr) will be 2nd string and Vernon Parker (Sr) 3rd. We decided to redshirt star recruit Charles Raphael, who didn't look as good as we thought he would in the offseason. Still, he has more potential than the above guys. Running Backs As much as we would like to play them, we decided to redshirt both Juan Koehler (Fr) and Mercury Razo (Fr) and give them time to get adjusted. (Koehler is definitely going to be a star.) Maurice Maxwell (Sr) and Luther Schneider (So) will be our starting tailbacks. Don't expect a Moe Stewart-like season. At fullback, Percy Schulz (So) returns as our starter. Receivers Sophomore Matt Lang will be our starting WR. Senior Byron Hodges will see some time, though. Recruit Philip Cofield will be redshirted. At TE, stud recruit Dean Snyder will start from day one, since we have no other scholarship TEs. My God, look at this guy's potential! He'll be a Hall-of-Famer when all is said and done. Offensive Line We have to replace our entire starting interior line. Fortunately, we have a good player filling in at C in Dale Peachey (So). At G, true freshman Ty Carlisle was good enough in camp to win one of the starting jobs, while Brad Powell (Jr) should be effective as well. These guys are all young but talented, and we have confidence. Jackie Perlman (Fr) will be redshirted. At T, we don't have nearly the confidence. Starters Mark LePorte (Sr) and Leland Harper (Jr) both return, but whoop-de-doo. Freshmen Colin Downs and Jim Osburn will be redshirted. Downs will be great in the future, but Osburn has no talent. Kickers Senior kicker Korey Elliott and junior punter Jamie Muterspaugh will return as starters. True freshman kicker Jake Garrison looks great. He won't be redshirted and if Elliott is injured, he'll see some time. Based on all of this, I don't see any reason to switch from the Wishbone. It probably doesn't matter what formation we run in 2006; there's not going to be much offense anyway.

2006 Defensive Breakdown
Defensive Line
At DE, we return one of our starters in Sean Lazetti (Sr). The other slot will be filled by promising sophomore Michael Davila. Once he gets used to playing, he'll be our top D-linesman. Lincoln Guthrie (Fr), who will be decent, will be redshirted. We'll have 2 DTs this year, due to the switch to a 4-3 (more on that later). The nose tackle will be Adam Sawyer (Sr) while the right tackle will be Bennie Nelson (Sr). Freshman Rod Welch will be a great DT in the future, but he'll be redshirted in 2006. Linebackers We're hurting big-time at LB. The only guy with a great future is true freshman ILB Gerald McCrory, who will be a starter from day one. At OLB, John Small (Sr) returns, and Dave Battle (Sr) will, unfortunately, take over the other OLB spot. Kurt Roosenraad (Fr) will be redshirted - not that we'll miss him. Secondary Ahhhhh..... the frustration leaves for a few minutes as I dissect our strongest unit. Our CB tandem of Bart Roberson (So) and Dennis Kennedy (Sr) will terrorize all of these run-and-shoot teams in C-USA. Byron Costello (Fr) looked pretty good in camp. He'll be redshirted this year and should be ready to take over for Kennedy in 2007. At S, Billy Rudy (Jr) will return as a starter, but we decided to replace Cole Corbett (Jr) with the very-promising Brenden Springer (So), who is already the best safety on the team. Warren Caban (Fr) will be redshirted. He holds a lot of promise. Due to our very good secondary, our improving D-line, and our weak linebackers, we decided to switch the primary defensive formation from a 3-4 to a 4-3. We are going to rely on our D to win games for us, because we can't expect much from the offense.

2006 Preview - UAB Sports Daily
It's time once again for some UAB Blazer football!
After a 3-8 season, the Blazers are hoping to improve in 2006. The team will run a 4-3 defensive formation this year, but will keep the wishbone on offense. The defense is definitely this team's strength. Here are the C-USA coaches' predictions this year: Code:
The preseason coaches' top 25 has TCU at #19. Champions USC, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida and Nebraska make up the top 5. Now, let's look at the UAB schedule for 2006: Code:
The first 3 games should see the Blazers go 1-2 to begin the season. With the exception of Louisville, all of the Blazers' tough conference games will be at Legion Field. With the right breaks, UAB could finish 4-4 in C-USA, but will probably finish 3-5, which is still an improvement from last year. We predict a final record of 4-7, and 3-5 in conference play.

Week 1 Recruiting
No games this week, so we're just concentrating on next year's freshmen. We definitely need better OLBs and DTs, plus a good tackle. Other than that, it's just routine recruiting.

Week 2 Preview
UAB (0-0) at #4 Ohio State (1-0)
Coaches Poll: UAB #102 Line: Ohio St. by 14 Weather: 56 degrees, sunny TV: TV5 The athletic department will pocket a lot of money, and the regional TV exposure will be good for the UAB program. But the Blazers have no business playing their first game at a team as strong as Ohio State, who will be the Blazers' highest-ranked opponent ever. Not with all of these questions on offense and at linebacker. Ohio State creamed Idaho 69-0 last week with their pro formation, which runs the ball more than it passes. Talent-wise, UAB is probably just a bit better than Idaho, which means OSU will probably crush them, too. B.B. Gunn will have his work cut out for him. The spread is probably too small. We predict OSU to drill UAB 51-7. Sorry UAB fans... we're just being realistic, here.

Week 2 Recap
#4 Ohio State 52, UAB 17
COLUMBUS, OH - Well, you can say this about the Blazers: they scored on the #4 team in the nation. Ohio State scored 50 points for the second straight week as they destroyed UAB at Ohio Stadium. 45 of the Buckeyes' (2-0) 52 points came in the first half. OSU led 45-7 at the half. Surprisingly, sophomore Luther Schneider was the lead RB today for UAB (0-1), and he did well against OSU, running for 98 yards. The same could not be said for UAB's QBs. Rodney Naquin was pulled late in the 2nd quarter after being ineffective for much of the first half. His replacement, Vernon Parker, didn't do much better, but he did pass for UAB's only offensive touchdown of the game. The most memorable moment of the game for UAB came in the 2nd quarter, when CB Bart Roberson silenced the 100,000-plus fans in attendance by taking a kickoff return 89 yards into the end zone, juking several OSU players on the way and making the ESPN SportsCenter Top Plays. Week 3 Preview
UAB (0-1) at Fairbanks (0-1)
Coaches Poll: UAB #106, Fairbanks #124 Line: Fairbanks by 5 Weather: 42 degrees, rainy TV: none For the second straight year, UAB travels to the Last Frontier to face Fairbanks. Fairbanks runs a single-back offense that was terrible in a 29-17loss at New Mexico in week 2. The situation seems the same as 2005: a bad looking UAB team going to Alaska. Fairbanks favored. We think the result will be about the same, too, especially with UAB's secondary healthy. Our prediction: UAB 34, Fairbanks 10.

Week 3 Recap
UAB 31, Fairbanks 23
FAIRBANKS, AK - UAB didn't dominate like they did last year, but they'll take the win. UAB dominated the first 3 quarters, but almost let the game get away as Fairbanks tried to engineer a comeback. G Brad Powell was the MVP, making several key blocks for UAB backs. The offense was wishbone at its best, with both running backs being effective. Maurice Maxwell had 130 yards on 30 carries and 2 TDs, while Luther Schneider had 150 yards on 17 carries. QB Rodney Naquin had a decent day in the air as well, even without UAB's top 2 receivers. Week 4 Preview
UAB (1-1) at Alabama (1-1)
Coaches Poll: Alabama #51, UAB #76 Line: Alabama by 7 Weather: 80 degrees, sunny TV: none Once again, UAB plays Big Brother in the matchup of 2006 for UAB fans. Last year, the Crimson Tide drilled the Blazers, but this year's Alabama team doesn't look as good as last year so far. They had a disappointing loss to Kansas State in Week 1, but did beat Southern Miss last week. Last year, Alabama was balanced on offense, but this year they seem to favor the run more. With 'Bama a bit down this year, UAB fans have hope for an upset. However, this Tide team still has far more talent, and there's no gamebreaker like Moe Stewart on this UAB team. We see another Crimson Tide victory, but not 48-3. Our prediction: Alabama 31, UAB 14.

Week 4 Recap
Alabama 69, UAB 0
TUSCALOOSA, AL - No need to explain this one. Let's just say that the "UAB - U Ain't Bama" chants were in full swing in this one. My favorite stat from this one: Alabama's average drive start was at the 50-yard line, no doubt helped by those four interceptions and one fumble. Oh, another good stat: UAB's longest drive was 19 yards. Code:

Week 5 Preview
Southern Miss (0-3) at UAB (1-2)
Coaches Poll: USM #94, UAB #91 Line: Southern Miss by 3 Weather: 63 degrees, sunny TV: none UAB begins C-USA play with a game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. This will be UAB's first home game of the season. Southern Miss runs a simple wing-T formation. They've looked bad so far this year, with losses to Alabama, Oregon State and Central Florida. UAB gets them at home, and UAB will have something to prove after getting thrashed by the Crimson Tide themselves last week. But USM has more talent, and UAB historically plays horribly against the Golden Eagles. They've lost to USM by a combined score of 62-0 the last two years. Our prediction: Southern Miss 31, UAB 20.

Notice
In an effort to speed through what is becoming a dismal season, I decided to stop posting the C-USA scores and standings and the Coaches Poll for the time being. If there is a big development, I'll let you know. If you want me to reinstate those items, just let me know and I'll be glad to. UAB is now 1-3, 0-1 in conference, good enough for a 5-way tie for 7th with Army, Cincinnati, Tulane and... Memphis. Yep, Memphis. They lost their first C-USA game to Houston, 51-44. Bye-bye, national ranking. Injuries Code:
Recruiting Commitments: 1 T Grant Pietraszak 6-4, 261 Hamburg, AR Rating: 80+ We needed a decent tackle, and we got a great one. Great with run blocking. But his HS's athletic prep was 10... that could be a problem. Still, he'll upgrade the position.

#19 TCU 45, UAB 27
BIRMINGHAM, AL - As usual, TCU wins, but this game was interesting for 3 quarters. UAB was only down by a touchdown at the end of the third, trailing 24-17. Then UAB's defense let them down in the final minutes. Despite the loss, the offense was fantastic today. Maurice Maxwell rushed for 106 yards and a TD. QB Rodney Naquin continues to surprise everyone with his newfound passing abilities, completing 50% of his passes today. He threw for 262 yards - a school record - and 2 TDs. WR Byron Hodges had a great day despite playing with an injury, and freshman TE Dean Snyder continues to wow opposing defenses. Next Up: UAB (2-4) at South Florida (2-3). USF favored by 13. Code:
