Apr 1 – Land Tech increase

June 20 – Liege joins me when I ask them to switch to Protestant

July 19 – France has a border dispute event with us and as a result, I gain claims for war for Berry, Bourbon and Nemours. I don’t gain them as cores I can just take them with justification.

Sept 2 – I put Holland in our Sphere of Influence

Sept 5 – Now I get a Boundary Dispute on France, which I push. I have gained a core on Lyonnais

Nov 11 – After working on it for a long time, I try to pass Hofgericht, and this time, I succeed

Dec 4 – Flanders is now Protestant

Dec 5 – RM: Ansbach

Dec 19 – I have inherited The Palatinate. This is good, because we have the land, and bad, because I lose an elector as we get closer to obvious close of Francois I’s rule.

Worms – This 19193 Protestant Rheinlander province sees the wine trade as its primary source of income. 37.38 ducats are made for us. Both it and Pfaltz have the same structures, level 2 fort, constable, marketplace, workshop, trade depot, training fields, armory, courthouse and church. It is a core of The Palatinate and us. Worms is located next to Pfaltz, Alsace, Trier, Koblenz and Metz.

Pfaltz – Right next to Worms is another wine province, as the 20556 Rheinlanders make 35.50 ducats. It has the same buildings as Worms. It is also a core of us and The Palatinate. It is next to Worms, Ansbach, Baden, Mainz, Alsace and Koblenz

Franken – This province is off the east past Ansbach and is unconnected to my other provinces. Catholic, core of The Palatinate and me, just a constable and level 1 fort. It has wine, 52178 Bavarians and 43.61 ducats. Despite the financial value, it has no value to me, but no one wants it, not even Bavaria. It is next to Ansbach, Bamburg, Dresden, Oberpfaltz, Sudety, and Ulm.

While Worms and the nearby area was never a part of the Duchy of Burgundy, it was the capital of the first Kingdom of Burgundy more than a thousand years ago.

Jan 1, 1532 – Bavarian is now an accepted culture

Apr 4 – Ansbach is giving me military access, so I can ferry troops to Franken if I need too.

Apr 24 – Franken converts to Protestant

July 6 – I get an event – Death of a Merchant, and I choose to take his m0oney, 264 ducats. I now have enough to order a university built in Luxembourg. I even have enough left over for a Counting House in Worms

Sept 15 – Brandenburg converted. Mecklemburg was released from war and also converted. 56 Imperial Authority again. Hmm.

Oct 21 – Thuringia has converted, 66.

Nov 6 – Since I have good relations now, and I got something passed last year, I spend 50 authority and try to get the 4th stage passed. It does, and we have Geimeiner Pfennig Reform.

I now have 6 of 7 voters because they’ve all switched to Protestant save Mainz (oir are mine. I am a voter in place of The Palatinate.

Dec 1 – I spend influence to put Ansbach into my Sphere of Influence

Jan 1, 1533 – Constable in Charolais, Counting House in Metz

Jan 9 – I am ceded Salzburg by Bavaria and I release it and lose an infamy.

Feb 27 – Saxe-Lauenburg informs us that the reformation has reached out and they have had a conversion to Reform.

I’m glad I was able to get some policies passed before the turmoil deepens.

Apr 18 – Poland has converted to Reformed

Aug 17 – Brabant is choosing religious tolerance in its Religious Disorder event

Sept 13 – RM: Mecklemburg, Silesia, Saxe-Lauenburg

Nov 17 – I lose an infamy when I am given Augsburg and cede it to Salzburg

Sept 5- I proclaim a guarantee on Avignon, since Austria currently has a claim on her throne

Sept 8 – Probably in retaliation, Austria has refused our merchants access.

Oct 1 – I have gained a trade dispute CB against Austria. Excellent. I want Antwerp, and now that the number of non-core provinces I have is down to one, I feel I can jump it back up to two, for the COT province of Antwerp and a port as well.

Oct 27 – I use the trade dispute as an excuse for war with Austria

I lose a stability. I order forces into Ghent and Sundgau. Their ally, Switzerland, joins them.

Nov 13 – Sundgau has fallen. 15k allied troops are attacking in Antwerp

Nov 27 – I fail an assault at Ghent

Feb 1 – Stab increase

I also noticed that Byzantium captured Kaffa for me. Thanks!

Mar 11 – I take Wallis, another Swiss province

Mar 21 – I put Cleves in my Sphere

Apr 1 – Swiss put some rebels in Barrois, but I just defeated them

Apr 6 – My allies have captured Bern. That’s enough.

I take Antwerp and gain 175 ducats. I gain 4 infamy and 7 prestige.

Antwerpen – 154333 Catholic Flemish people have a Center of Trade and work in the cloth trade as well. They produce 75.65 ducats annually for us. Due to its wealth, France, Austria and Flanders all have claims to it. It has a Textile Manufactory. It is next to Ghent, Vlaanderen, Brabant and Zeeland. It is not next to any of my provinces.

I order a Missionary to here.

I order a Missionary to Lyonnais.

I think it’s map time!

The usual things apply – Black for vassals, yellow for allies, and I added a puce green for my Sphere that are neither – Ansbach and Cleves.

Where you see my flag just before the L in Lorraine is where Lyonnais is.

As you can see, I’ve got a ton of money. My next plan is to wait until Jan of next year and build a manufactory. I also need to buy down my infamy.

May 1 – Production Tech increase

July 12 – I just got 600 ducats as a gift to the state. I order a Refinery in Alsace. I still have a ton of money, so I will still for another.

July 19 – Lyonnais has converted to the one true faith

Sept 7 – Wurzburg chose not to turn over Bamburg to me.

Oct 25 – RM: Epirus, Modena, rejected by Sicily and Ferrara

Dec 7 – We defeated Catholic rebels in Antwerpen.

Feb 1, 1537 – Land Tech increases

Just so you know, I have a monopoly in Antwerp, and five merchants each in Liguria and Lubeck. I haven’t put a merchant in Liguria in decades, Lubeck might take out one every other year or so.

May 2 – RM: Brittany, Ferrara ; rejected by Savoy

May 9 – We get a message from Sweden that they have encountered the Counter-Reformation.

Many nations have embraced the Counter-Reformation and enacted the changes based on it.

It looks like my relations have increased with them. Cool!

July 7 – University finished in Luxembourg. My next mission is to subjugate Mainz. Nice!

Sept 6 – I use a Subjugation CB to DOW Mainz

Bavaria joins her ally and Switzerland, as Mainz is in her sphere.

Oct 4 – Mainz has fallen

Oct 7 – Peace for money, force them to Protestant, and vassalization.

I get -2 infamy and a new mission - Italian ambition. I’ve not seen it before but it looks like I will get as a core any Italian province I take. Hmm.

Oct 9 – The Swiss accept peace for a concession of defeat.

Jan 2, 1538 – I order a Weapons manufactory in Metz.

Feb 6 – RM: Cyprus, Foix

May 4 – I Promote Cultural Unity in Bourgogne

Jan 2, 1539 – After building a third army, I DOW Savoy with NO CB and lose 2 stability.

Mar 2 – Piedmont fell
Savoy is attacking Franche-Comté, so I am moving my Antwerp army to intercept.

Mar 5 – Savoie fell

Mar 21 – Cuneo falls

Apr 5 – Nice falls

Apr 7 – We go to peace:

Nice, Cuneo, and Savoie are now mine. I couldn’t annex them. I gained 12 infamy for the territory and 2 for the war.

On the other hand, I gained three provinces and immediately got cores on them:

Savoie – 15342 Protestant Lombards work the cloth trade and make 44.01 ducats. They also area core of just Savoy and me. Next to Wallis, Freiburg, Piedmont, Dauphine, Lyonnais and Franche-Comté.

Cuneo – 16571 Catholic Lombards grow grapes here on the foothills of the Alps. A lovely vintage. They make 25.48 ducats annually. They are claimed by Savoy, Milan, and me. They are next to Piedmont, Dauphine, Provence, Nice and Liguria.

Nice – This Riviera province has 20969 fishers of Lombard Catholic descent. They make 17.30 ducats. Claimed by just Savoy and me, Nice is next to Cuneo, Liguria and Provence.

I send missionaries to Cuneo and Nice. I am leaving behind my large army in Nice

I need to make a land connection through Dauphine later.

I get a mission to build an army bigger than Hungary. I spend some Prestige to get rid of it, and the next is to improve relations with Bavaria. Okay.

Today our ruler, Duke Francois I de Vaudemont has passed. His son takes over. He led a good Dukedom, and oversaw many changes, wars, and developments. His 30 year rule saw his lands expand massively and his name known throughout Europe.

Today his son, Antoine I de Vaudemont has been elected the new Emperor and taken over the Dukedom. His son, Rene III, is 5, but the throne is secure.

Antoine is not his father’s son:

Admin: 6
Military: 3
Dip: 3

This will slow down our infamy reduction massively, but I have a plan for that.

We gain 10 Imperial Authority. We have also inherited Byzantium.

Dukes of Lorraine

Rene II de Vaudemont, 1473 - Sept 14, 1510
Francois I de Vaudemont, Sept 14, 1510 – Jan 10, 1540
Antoine I de Vaudemont, Jan 10, 1540 –

We announce the creation of the following vassals:

Crete
Morea
Byzantium

This cedes seven provinces to vassals. The result is that we lose 14 infamy, and our infamy is just 0.2 again.

We enter into Royal Marriages with all three of these vassal states.

We’ve handled that little problem. Antoine is free to move into his era as Duke, unfettered by the infamy of his predecessor.

Now that we’ve dropped our infamy, we will be focusing on regaining our places in Centers of Trade. With more than 50 imperial authority, we’ll also look to send a few gifts here and there to prepare for the next vote.

Feb 1 – I get an alliance CB vs France, but I can’t take Dauphine without hurting my infamy reduction too much. Valenciennes doesn’t become a core for 12 years. I don’t mind the infamy increase, because I have none, but right now, with my 3 diplomacy Duke, my infamy reduction is -0.08. That is not a typo. Taking Dauphine would mean I’d have to get another diplomat advisor and then it wouldn’t go down at all for a long time. I skip it.

On the other hand, Dauphine is not in the empire, so I wouldn’t lose infamy annually for holding it without a core. Hmmm. Plus I get a land connection with Nice and the sea.

Okay, I’ve talked myself into it.

I DOW France

Feb 26 – Auvergne falls to me

Mar 6 – Dauphine falls

Mar 28 – Limousin falls

Apr 12 – Languedoc falls

Apr 14 –

We gain 225 gold, force them to release Alencon, and take Dauphine. I gained 4 infamy

Dauphine – 14553 Occitan Protestant shepherds make wool for sale. Just 13.92 ducats, because this was a province for strategic reasons, and not financial value. It is a core of France, Provence and Dauphine. It is next to Lyonnais, Savoie, Cuneo, Piedmont, Avignon, Provence, Languedoc and Auvergne.

Apr 15 - RM: Alencon, Provence

Apr 22 – I put Marketplace for Alsace

I have never looked at the colonies, because I wanted to be surprised when I could go colonial. Now that I can, let’s take a looksee.

Portugal seems to control a massive amount of North America, but not a lot of coasts. France has a small colony started in the Maryland/Delaware area.

Castille is all over Central America, as well as lots of places in the Caribbean like Cuba. Portugal has many in the Caribbean as well. They also are in the Inca region, but I’m not sure how much.

Provence is building a coastal Brazilian colony while Savoy has a minor colony here as well.

France also seems to have a small colony in the Da Plata region.

England has some provinces on the coast south of Morocco and the Sahara. Also down here are Portugal and Castille. Portugal has colonies every so often as far down the coast as I can see. England has a few here and there too. Milan even has a colony on the Grain Coast.

I don’t want to turn this into the Race for Colonies Lorraine style, but I suspect the occasional colony would make sense. There is one and precisely one unclaimed province anywhere that is in my range – Sierra Leone. It has a huge native aggressiveness plus tropical. I’m not desperate. What I could do is artificially inflate my range.

One option is to take Quest for the New World. It gives me the ability to make a Conquistador or Explorer as well as extending my range by 50%. Another option is to make a Navigator advisor, but I don’t have the naval tradition to make it.

I need Quest. Or I could just wait for several naval tech increases.

I lose stability to move to Quest for the New World from Bureaucracy. I dispatch a pair of colonists to Antigua and St. Bartholomew

I order a Caravel in Nice

June 14 – Avignon agrees to give me military access. I go to take out some of their rebels.

July 16 – I get an Excellent Diplomacy event and use it to lower my infamy by 3

July 22 – Rebels in Dauphine

July 29 – Rebels defeated

Sept 1 – Stab increase

Sept 30 We establish colonies at both places and I send in another 2 colonists.

Dec 14 – A game changer, perhaps. We manage to force through the Landfriede reform. It has some serious side effects. Firstly, for me and everybody else, we lose army tradition annually. Stability costs increase 10%. We have essentially declared Peace in the Empire. Here’s the big one. Everybody in the Empire loses all CBs on members.

Dec 26 – When approached by savages in Antigua, I propose trade and lose 50 ducats and gain a tax value there.

Jan 1, 1543 – I order Constable in Antwerp, and Trade Depot in Barrois: Stab increase

Jan 24 - Promote cultural unity in Luxembourg.

Feb 3 – My fort is built in Valenciennes, and I gain some tradition and finish that mission. The next is an upgraded fort in Worms, so I order it built.

Mar 1 – My colonists arrive and expand the islands.

May 1 – Stab increase back to full

June 3 – RM: Friesland

Sept 5 – RM: Ulm, Ansbach rejected us though

Nov 1 – Production Tech increase

Jan 3, 1544 – Treasury in Lothringen, Trade Depot in Antwerp, Caravel in Nice

Jan 17 – Westfallen is ceded to me by Hesse and I give it to Koln, and lose my infamy. I am back to normal after taking Dauphine. Nice!

Jan 23 – Anhalt converts to Protestant

Jan 28 – Prussia formed as Reform. I enter into a RM with them.

Speaking of Reform, I haven’t heard much from Reform, so let me take a look at the Reform movement in Europe thus far. Other than Poland and some changes in the east, it has been very quiet.

Feb 7 – The fort is built, and now they want me to colonize Sao Tome. I have no desire for that random low value province to be mine. I want to spent 5 prestige to get rid of it but I can’t until April.

May 17 – I cancel the mission and the next is to turn Antigua into a city.

June 1 – Land Tech increases, RM: Avignon

July 16 – I defeat rebels in Antwerp after that captured Ghent and moved across the border,

I was looking for a military opportunity because my infamy is dead, but I can’t find it. My few CBs aren’t helping me, and I don’t have any good options outside of the HRE right now.

July 19 – Aristocracy gains one when Nobles demand rights and I give it to them.

Oct 9 – I spend 12 prestige to put Flanders in my Sphere of Influence

Dec 1 – I send a Warning to France

Jan 5, 1545 – Canal in Antwerp, Treasury in Bourgogne

Mar 1 – Gvnt Tech increases

Mar 30 – We defeat a revolt in Dauphine

Aug 5 – St Bartholomew has been discovered to be a good place to grow tobacco

I create a level 6 statesman to replace the one I have.

Aug 10 – Coffee in Antigua

Aug 16 – Due to my mission there, I send colonists to Antigua

Jan 6, 1546 – Workshop in Antwerp, Churches in Franche-Comté and Bourgogne

Jan 17 – Antigua expands and I send another 100 colonists from Nice across the ocean, while I have another set head to Bahamas.

June 16 – Antigua expands

July 4 – Our colonists have set up shop in Bahamas

Sept 1 – Trade Tech increases

Sept 20 – Portugal embargoes us

Jan 7, 1547 – Courthouses in Franche-Comté and Bourgogne.

Jan 25 – Brandenburg chose not to give me back the province of Niederlausitz.

May 2 – I move our government from Feudal Monarchy to Administrative Monarchy. We lose 2 stability. The new form of government gives us more magistrates annually, faster policy slider changes, and a +10 production income, rather than the manpower and forcelimits we get now. As the HRE< our manpower is huge, and our forcelimits aren’t that big of a deal.

June 12 – Hungary is attacked by Lithuania, and I agree to help them as the HRE, so I gain 5 authority. I don’t expect to do anything.

Oct 1 – Stability increase

Dec 1 – Ghent’s rebels sent it to Brabant

Jan 1, 1548 – Stab back to full,

Jan 4 – I accept a White Peace offer from their alliance leader, Poland, for peace.

Jan 7 – Dock in Antwerp, Nice; Constable in Savoie and Cuneo

June 1 – Production Tech increases

Sept 18 – RM: Liguria, Catalunya

Sept 20 – France has no allies and is at war with England. This is a good time to take more French lands. The one I want is Champagne. It would make sense geographically, and it has some value. The two provinces to its interior are Vermandois and Nemours – both are cheap little grain provinces. Bourbon and Auvergne are decent enough iron provinces but with low tax values and populations. Languedoc is nice, but it’s a bit too far west for my taste.

Declaring war on her and winning should be easy. Without any allies, and at war with England, and with rebel issues all over she is an easy target. I could take Champagne, and force her to release more states that I did before with Alencon. I could even take both Champagne and Languedoe, but that may be a bit too much.

What I need is a CB. I have none. Luckily, I have a way to get one, perhaps. I send in a spy. I have a massive chance for success – 85%, to forge documents. He succeeds and is not caught. I order my maintenance back up and my troops to assemble along her border.

Nov 1 – I DOW France

Nov 21 – Champagne falls

Nov 23 – Bourbon falls

Nov 29 – Languedoc falls

Dec 11 – I have taken Champagne and 100 gold

Champagne – 23938 Protestant Cosmopolitan people grow grapes and make wine in the hills that are so iconic that a type of wine is named after them. They make 38.07 ducats for us. It is a core of both Champagne and France. Champagne is just west of Barrois, and is also near Vermandois, Nemours, Valenciennes, and Bourgogne.

Jan 1, 1549 – I suspect a new map is in order

As you can see, Switzerland and Brabant gained the remaining west Austrian lands.

Black lines surround my vassals – Koln, Holland, Mainz, Trier, Liege. Koln has a province to its northwest past Cleves and unconnected, so I circled it too. My allies are in yellow – Alencon, Brabant, Flanders, Aachen. Pink represents the three states that are in my Sphere of Influence, but not in the above lists – Avignon, Ansbach, and Cleves. I put green around my two provinces that are mine but unconnected – Franken to the east and Antwerp on the Coast. Finally, I wrote a quick C on my province where I just took Champagne.

May 22, 1551 – Today, Antoine I de Vaudemont passed due to an illness . His 16 year old son, Rene III will secede him. Antoine may not have been the most gifted of rulers, but he oversaw significant expansion, including the introduction of several colonies in the Caribbean area. His short reign was still a good time for Lorraine.

We wish his heir well. Rene III is stepping into some big shoes. He has been elected Emperor, and we gain some authority.

Admin – 4
Military – 8
Diplo – 7

He is strong in several areas. His heir is his younger brother, Rodolphe.

Dukes of Lorraine

Rene II de Vaudemont, 1473 - Sept 14, 1510
Francois I de Vaudemont, Sept 14, 1510 – Jan 10, 1540
Antoine I de Vaudemont, Jan 10, 1540 –May 22, 1551
Rene III de Vaudemont, May 22, 1551 -

The better diplomacy drops our infamy lots, and we are told that we are likely to Annex Liege if we wanted

Royal Marriages: Mecklemburg, Holland, Brabant, Flanders ; Ansbach rejected us

July 1 – RM: Alencon

I note that my relations increased with the HRE states, probably with a higher diplo Emperor . They are almost all at the 175+ level.

July 13 – I Promote Cultural Unity in Champagne

Sept 1 – Naval Tech Increases

Dec 5 – RM: Byzantium, Cyprus, Morea

Jan 1, 1552 – Production Tech increases

I saved and minted three months of income rather than investing last year, and now I want to build a manufactory. I want some extra Trade investment, so I order a Refinery in Bourgogne

RM: Avignon

Feb 1 – RM: Oldenburg

Feb 11 – I order more colonists for Antigua’s shore

I order two transports in Nice

Apr 12 – We defeated some rebels in Crete

Apr 20 – Slider time! I move us more Quality and we lose a stability

May 23 – I want to get some naval tradition so I can hire a naval advisor in the future. The best way to do that is to hire an Explorer and send my fleet in to the ocean to explore. So I do.

June 7 – Switzerland chooses not to give me Sundgau, so I gain an Imperial Liberation CB on them.

July 4 – RM: Catalunya, Provence, Orleans

July 13 – Antigua expands

July 27 – I get an event, the New World beckons, and I choose to gain three colonists. I send a set to Antigua to finish it. I send another set to Trinidad.

Nov 3 – Tobacco in The Bahamas

Nov 7 – Catalunya gives me military access so I can use their colonies as a space to have my navy.

Nov 11 – I gain a core on Piedmont from a border dispute.

Dec 18 – Trinidad is our newest colony and I send in more. Very aggressive natives.

Dec 26 – Antigua is our first colony. I finish our mission. The next mission is to improve defenses in Savoie, so I send builders there.

Antigua – This island in the Lesser Antilles is a former colony with Catholic Burgundians that work the coffee trade. 3060 people make us 17.37 ducats. It has nothing, so I order a level 1 fort.
