Okla. Woman Accused of Giving Birth Drunk
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (AP) - A woman has been arrested on child neglect charges after giving birth while drunk, police said. Melissa Irene Tanner, 37, is accused of having a blood alcohol content close to three times the legal limit when she gave birth to a baby girl on June 30. She is being held in jail with bail set at $30,000 and the baby has been placed in foster care. The baby was not breathing upon birth and had to be administered a medication to counteract any narcotics that may have been present in the child's system. After an emergency procedure by hospital staff, the child started breathing. Tanner reportedly has six other children. According to a July 11 probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Tanner told police she and another person had consumed a case of beer. |

If those were the circumstances under which the child was conceived, then why not mirror the conditions when giving birth?

I'd like to nominate this woman:
Mother charged with injecting toddler with feces Associated Press Jul. 15, 2005 11:30 AM BEAR, Del. - A former pediatric nurse has been charged with trying to poison her toddler son by injecting human feces into his bloodstream. Stephanie McMullen, 29, was charged Thursday with assault and reckless endangerment counts and released on bail. Doctors at the hospital where McMullen worked alerted police that her 22-month-old son had been hospitalized six times since he was 4 months old for "serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses," acting police chief Lt. Col. Scott McLaren said. During one examination, doctors found E. coli, a bacteria found in feces, in the boy's bloodstream, and said the only way it could have entered the bloodstream was "through injection, not consumption." "This could have eventually led to the death of the child," McLaren said. A search of McMullen's hospital locker turned up needles, a syringe holder and an intravenous line tap, and an examination of her home computer indicated she had been researching child poisoning, according to court records. McLaren said the woman could have Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in which caregivers cause illnesses in children or exaggerate their symptoms in an effort to draw attention to themselves. McMullen's attorney, Elwood Eveland Jr., said the child has an eating disorder, and that he has consulted with a medical expert who believes that what the child is suffering is part of a medical condition. He said police have "absolutely no evidence of an objective nature" against her. The boy was placed in foster care, and McMullen is scheduled to appear in Family Court next week to try to regain custody. Last edited by Farrah Whitworth-Rahn : 07-15-2005 at 06:27 PM. |

This is pure speculation on my part, but wouldn't the legitimate painkillers be administered in such a way that they can't affect the fetus? Whereas alcohol can just coast through the bloodstream right into the uterus. I don't think it was the mother's mental state that was at issue here.

Oklahoma woman goes into labor after quaffing "Milwaukee's Best"
JULY 15--A pregnant Oklahoma woman who split a case of beer with her boyfriend shortly before giving birth last month is facing felony child neglect charges. Melissa Irene Tanner, a 37-year-old mother of seven, had a blood alcohol content nearly four times the state's .08 limit, according to the below probable cause affidavit. Tanner's baby, a girl born June 30, had a BAC of .21, nearly three times the Oklahoma limit. Tanner, who first told a nurse that she was unaware of the pregnancy, was arrested and tossed into the Washington County lockup, where she is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. Tanner, pictured at right in a booking photo, drank a case of beer a week during her pregnancy, and apparently preferred "the cheap stuff," according to the affidavit. In fact, a friend quoted by cops said that after the baby was born, she asked Tanner what the girl was going to be named. Tanner, the friend told deputies, replied, "Maybe Milwaukee's Best." There was actually some lady in Wisconsin who named her kid Marijuana Pepsi Jones. Maybe she and Milwaukee's mom can hang out.

Administering narcotics to women in labor is a well established practice. It's also well documented that they do cross the placenta and can cause problems with the baby's ability to breathe. They can also cause problems with breastfeeding since the baby may be too doped up to latch on properly. |
