Mar 5 – Several factories and a ton of railroads have been sponsored by private interests

Apr 6 – Another army arrives in Brazil from the rebel-fighting areas

Jul 5 – We capture a Brazilian province

Jan 1, 1888 – 39 {C}, 38 (S), 17, 6, 1

Jan 31 – Another rebellion fires off – Nicaraguan Nationalists. This is much smaller

Feb 22 – Haiti is back in our Sphere. I continue my influence here though, I want to have enough to do a couple of things.

Apr 22 – The rebellion is destroyed

June 3 – I reduce the relations between Haiti and the USA to cordial from friendly

Oct 28 – Bolivia is now in our Sphere of Influence

Nov 21 – I accept an alliance offer from Bolivia

Nov 22 – We get Breech-Loaded Rifles. Next up is Empiricism

Jan 1, 1889 – Lib 39, Con 37, 19, 4, 1

Feb 1 – We send a botanical expedition to Kankan

Feb 22 – I’m having fun trying to increase my influence with a bunch of European powers like Denmark and Sweden that others are fighting over, just to see them blow through their influence to keep me from from gaining it

July 1 – Election time

Jan 1, 1890 – The Libs won again. UH is 41, 35, 20, 3, 1

If the libs and socialists would agree to some reforms, they could get some things done, but they don’t. The Libs want political reform, and the socialists want social reform

You can see a ton of factories being expanded by local people. I haven’t touched a factory in decades.

You can also see that our border mostly follows the Rio Grande these days.

During our war, the UK retook Belize and the Bahamas

May 1 – We discovered individualism

Aug 1 – We discover gaslights

Aug 21 -We discover internal combustion. Next up is Electricity

Dec 1 – We discover cracking and hermeneutics

Jan 1, 1911 – 32, 28, 28, 6, 4, 2

Mar 2 – Austria got A-L from France

Apr 18 – We are now Cordial with both the Ottomans and Egypt

Aug 29 – I choose to fight union busting, rather than support it.

Sept 23 – I have the largest rebellion I’ve had yet. Here, take a look.

Holy CRAP!

That’s 55 provinces, and we’ve got some larger forces here and there to deal with as well. Sigh, here we go. In the province I have my army in the south, Cali, I have 21k troops stationed. 51k spawned to attack me there. I have 110,000 in Queretaro, 42k in San Felipe, and so forth.

Oct 19 – 98k troops that have won battles are moving to Q to try and take out their largest army

Nov – 24 -We barely won the campaign in Queretaro

Nov 26 – Mexico and California are cleansed of rebels.

Nov 28 – We barely, and I mean barely, won in Cali, and this army is out for a while.

Dec 3 – We now have electricity and I order our thinkers to think up an assembly line

Dec 17 – Cuba is now clear

Dec 21 – Two provinces fell today in Cali Region

Dec 23 – San Felipe fell

Jan 1, 1912 – Election time again. UH is 33, 27, 27, 6 (R}, 4, 2

We are now cordial with Sweden

Jan 2 – Bacalar fell (in the Yucatan)

Jan 7 – We spend some cash to attend the 5th Olympic Games

Jan 13 – Bariquismento falls

Jan 22 – Puerto Lampira falls

Jan 28 – Coro falls

Feb 8 - Seeing an opportunity, Jacobin Rebels spring up as well

Mar 11 – Their main army, 66k strong just took Quibdo. I am attacking it though.

Mar 30 – We recaptured our first province

Apr 1 – We develop telephones

Apr 3 – We recapture Bacalar

Apr 11 – We defeated them in Quibdo. Now’s its just a matter of retaking lost provinces.

Jul 1 – The Cons won again

I just did the math and realized that I am late with my 75 year review by a year and a half. Sorry!

76.5 Year Review

Prestige - 10th
Industrialization – 7th
Military – 9th

Overall 7th

Literacy 54.7%

Our Sphere of Influence – Venezuela, Haiti, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Denmark, Peru

Lost Colombia, and when I’ve got time, I’ll go back and get her. Of course, Venezuela took that land from her, so Colombia is very small these days.

We have 46.14 Million people and 11.54 able bodied men of adult age.

89.54% of our population is Catholic

Ethnicity Breakdown:

29% Mexican
26% Central American
12% Nahua

No one else is at or close to 10%.

I figured out where population stats are kept. We are the 9th most populous state

Our 99 factories are 6th most

The 114 brigades we field is 9th largest.
And the 66 ships we have is 11th by one ship behind the Ottomans

We are still advanced in many ways. Only 4 nations have secret ballots. Only 9 states are true democracies. Only 5 states allow all unions. We were the first state to allow a truly free press, and yet we are still just one of 14 to do so. Only 12 nations have pensions of any sort.

Aug 23 – We weren;t able to acquire the supplies for those tanks, they are still in the queue. Apparently, no one has been making them, and I can’t build factories, so I erase their orders so I can build a few more armies.

Sept 1 – We develop Thomas steel.

Oct 1 – Electrical lighting and x-rays are developed

Nov 5 – We have recaptured the final province that the rebels had controlled.

Jan 1, 1913 –UH is 34, 27 (L}, 26, 6, 5, 2

Jan 13 – We have Assembly Line – next is Anti-Rationalism, which will give me another 100% research boost. In order to get to it faster, I switch away from Commercial Industrialization back to normal research.

Feb 1 – Industrialized Armament Industry discovered

Feb 3 – Our athletes are victorious at the Olympics

Mar 27 – There is a Campaign for Women’s Property Rights, and I take it national, and my nation shifts a bit more liberal.

Apr 1 – We discover tractors

Apr 2 – France downgraded us to neutral in Brazil

Apr 14 – We are now cordial again with Brazil

June 29 = The forts are complete in Sacramento and Eureka – I order them expanded again

July 12 – I got this interesting event, take a look:

I can either help nationalists or fascists. They have an identical set of restrictions on my actions. Personally, I’d be happy with socialists, but not Nationalists/Fascists – I remember when I had Nationalists in charge before. I go with diffusing it, and support increases for Nationalists.

Sept 14 – We are friends with Brazil

Dec 1 – Martin steel developed

Mar 9 -We actually lost one of the battles against the Jacobins

Apr 13 – We have defeated the last Jacobin

July 1 – We discover Fordism

July 12 – We announce that Brazil is now in our Sphere of Influence – that makes every single S. American nation in our Sphere sans Colombia. Brazil has been in France and the UK’s Spheres before, and the USA was once working on it – so Brazil is friendly with all of them. I need to work my influence up so I can stave off any poachers.

July 15 – A woman has enrolled at a local college, and it is causing a stir. I use the event to mock conservatives – are they afraid of one woman? (The other option was to get her thrown out)

Aug 14 – We accept an alliance offer from Brazil

Sept 29 – We discover anti-rationalism. Next up is State & Government

Dec 26 – The USA is now cordial with Argentina

Jan 1, 1915 - 35, 27, 24, 7, 6, 2

May 14 – Cuba is clean of rebels

May 22 – As is Mexico

May 24 – We discover State & Government. Next is Nationalism and Imperialism

June 20 – Rebels killed from Central America. The only ones left are in S America.

July 22 – The San Felipe army was defeated and now we begin to recapture it. All armies have been destroyed.

July 26 – We are not cordial with Colombia

Aug 14 – We are now friends with Colombia

Sept 12 – We recapture San Felipe

Oct 2 – Another Jacobin Rebellion

Dec 1 – Populism vs Establishment discovered. France is making a grab for Brazil, putting in a lot of influence. In a bit, I’m going to shut them down.

Apr 1 – We discover Separatism

Apr 4 – Our athletes are victorious. Plus, Villahermosa is now a core

(militancy minus 1, pop of nobles -10%, militancy gain among Cuban farmers by 3.) ; Intervene eventually? (-30% nobility in Cuba, -2 militancy, +2 among Cuban farmers)

These are dissidents and they were uprising. I allow the slaughter.

Jan 1, 1918 – 36, 26, 22, 7, 6, 3

Jan 3 – The final rebels are dispatched

Feb 1 – Havana is now a core

I order the forts in Eureka and Sacramento to expand again.

May 18 – France retook Alsace-Lorraine from Austria

June 4 – We have gained functionalism, next is Biologism

June 10 – I drop the USA to neutral in Argentina

July 4 – A Jacobin rebellion with a total of 9k troops across two provinces makes me laugh. Perhaps we are leaving behind this era of rebels. The recent ones have been much lighter.

Nov 1 – A major discovery I hope. We discover secret police, and our revolutionaries in all movements get -25%

Nov 14 – Jagua now a core

Feb 1 – We have created/invented/realized/discovered the Vanguard Party, which increases, massively, Communist Rebel strength

Feb 18 – After developing Biologism, we move to Social Science.

Feb 23 – The Cat and Mouse Act has made its way to our Upper House. Do I support it? (This Act sends those incarcerated who decide on a hunger strike back out until they are well, and then brings them back in – it’s a way to combat the Suffragette movement which is using this as a tactic. It’s legal, although a bit mean, so I allow it. The Libs in Cali Region are more militant (the other option turns all non-Libs more militant by almost the same amount)

Mar 1 – We uncover Rhetoric of Hate and Nostalgic Romanticism

Mar 25 – Killed the rebels. Again.

Apr 26 – Parral is a core

I have no badboy anymore. Sounds like another war against Mexico, but what do I want?

Arizona? Nevada-Utah? Texas? Oklahoma? Neuvo Leon?

I think I could take Belize from the UK, but It would require a lot of set up. I’d need a few armies in Brazilian and Venezuelan territory ready to invade their S American land, and then I’d need transports around the Caribbean with armies that launch into their islands. I need to strike fast and I could probably take Belize in war.

July 14 – I’m ready to attack Mexico. I look around to see if there’s anyone else I can go for.

After consideration, I like my nation’s profile, and I will not be going after someone, just because I can. Also ,after consideration, barring something unusual, I will be ending my game on Jan 1, 1920.

July 24 – Tuxtla is now a core province

Dec 5 – Penonome is now in our patrimony as well

Dec 24 – David is a core

It’s been 85 years in a 100 year game. It’s time to call it. Let’s look at our mighty nation:

Our final Upper House:

Socialists – 36.91%

Communist – 0.62%

Our Prestige was 232, ranked 11th
Our Industrialization was 3266, ranked 7th
Our military was 456, ranked 8th.

Our overall ranking was 7th. The rankings of the top 16:

9. Bavaria with 1056
10. Baden with 836
11. Italy with 828

Haiti
Denmark
Argentina
Brazil
Venezuela
Colombia
Peru
Bolivia
Ecuador
Paraguay
Uruguay
Chile

91.88% Catholic

29.73% Mexican
29.53% Central American

Winery, level 11, Honduras - 546.04 (I built that one too)
Steel Mill, level 16, Guatemala – 388.19 (My first factory in our nation, ever, which I built)

I would build to the province – Distillery in a grain region, winery in a fruit one, Steel Mill in an iron one, etc. I think that’s helped some of mine to rate highly.

There are no wars, and have been none for over a year.

We have no infamy, and no badboy

My goal was to get Social Science, and then enact Women’s Suffrage.

With 50.81 million people, we are the 8th most populous nation in the world; 12.7 million able bodied adult men

106 factories, 6th most

Thoughts on the Game:

I love a lot of mechanics and their influence on the era – like industrialization. I love sending expeditions and having the Olympics and the Nobel Peace Prize and World’s Fair. There’s a lot of fun in here. (One issue with the events was that sometimes I would send out an Expedition and then never hear back. I sent out one to the North Pole almost 40 years ago, and never with a response. There are other examples - second one to Antarctica and another I can’t recall)

I really like how rebels will happen even in provinces that have been yours for a long time. In EU3, I would not have gotten an rebellion in places like Costa Rica or Guatemala unless I was severely mis-managing the nation. However, due to the politics of the era, it makes sense here. I like it!

In war being able to only take land one region at a time is interesting. It’s got positives and negatives. In EU3 and CK, the nature of the size of your land grab impacted your infamy. Here, you gain the infamy just for declaring war for territory, and then it doesn’t matter if you get three provinces in a small region, or 7 in a large region like California – same infamy level. The regions sometimes make sense – Panama, Costa Rica, etc. However, why can’t I just take one or two provinces from a region? I also can only get a peace concession that I’ve declared as my aim. I can’t beat up Mexico so badly that not only do I get land, but I force them into other concessions either, such as cutting their military or joining my Sphere of Influence, or what have you. It made wars simpler, and yet took away interesting things.

Regions also enable region wide things, such as communist sentiment in just Cuba or just Sonora, instead of nationally or in just one province – and that is quite cool. Regions definitely have a place in the game.

I like how some discoveries don’t get impacted immediately. For example, I learn Basic Chemistry, which allows me at some point in time to learn about Nitroglycerin. When the random event triggers that gives me Nitro, not every one of my mines immediately uses it. I occasionally get an event that tells me someone is using nitro now. The same was true with things like tractors. I think that’s a very realistic way of doing advances.

I loved balancing the politics side of things, and how I could do different things based on who was in charge. I would have like to have seen that role even stronger. Why not have anti-military parties prevent me from declaring a war I don’t have a CB for? That’d be really cool.

Oh, btw, I found that this game’s processing of budget, money, immigration, and such on a daily basis was really cool. I really liked it

What I don’t like is how the game has limitations on simulating the era, and instead of fixing it through game mechanics, it patches the hole with events. This is the difference between EU2 and EU3. EU2 would just have an event that triggered that represented a real world event, such as the death of Burgundy’s ruler that leads to it being inherited. That death, in real life, happened in war when the King was in battle. So even if you aren’t at war, your ruler dies. That’s a flawed way to represent a historical event.

For example, earlier in this game, the USA peacefully annexed Hawaii. There’s probably an event allowing them to do it for Texas or California. If you could annex a country peacefully, I couldn’t figure out the metric for doing so. I was looking hard. Using events to cover historical annexations belies the ability for me to do so ahistorically, since the game is supposed to be about the path not taken.

The worst example are the major wars. There is no way that this game can simulate the Spanish-American war in the 18902, for example. They took a ton of provinces (Cuba, Philippines, Puerto Rico) in a large number of regions, and in this game, with the mechanics in place, that would put them over the infamy limit by a lot, and then everybody would ostracize them and start DOW’ing them. How does this game account for that?

Maybe they have an event for just that war, but again, that is a patch to cover the lack of mechanical consistency with history.

I did really like how the flag of a nation would change based on who was in charge. The Communists took over Iceland, so it added Communist symbols to their flag – totally cool.

I have never played a game that had a money mechanic, and where money didn’t matter. After I discovered that advance that increased my fruit and coffee production by 50%, I have never looked back. I kept my tariffs at 25%, and I would keep my people relatively tax free and spent the maximum amount on goods and services for my people (like military, administration, and such). When a factory costs roughly 2k to build and army units 1.2-1.8k, then you can wonder at the fact that I ended the game t more than 7 million pounds.

Sometimes they have an event or discovery that didn’t match the mechanics well. For example, what impact has social Darwinism had on the US? Can you quantify it? For example, when I get Social Science, I can develop the field of Sociology. Do you know what they will do for me? Raise my consciousness in non-colonies by a bit. Is that an accurate reflection of the value of Sociology?

I developed the Panama Canal, and for my trouble, I could quickly move my ships from one side of my nation to the other and I gained some prestige. No fees? No trade? Nothing? I developed one of the most highly traveled commercial routes on the planet in my own backyard, and I get nothing but a relatively small amount of prestige?

The plurality mechanic did absolutely nothing that I am aware of all game long. I just looked it up, and supposedly in a democracy, it’s supposed to decrease the militancy of your pops, but if so, it must have been broken, because mine was quite high by the end, and I was getting a bajillion rebellions.

Which leads me to my last major issue I had with the game - the rebel-geddon I was having. They showed you what the rebels were, how many, how big their forces were, and so forth. But there was never any info about how to reduce the rebels. For example, the game said “Jacobins are looking for true democracy and want to move their nation more towards it” but I’m a freakin’ democracy! I found that one in particular to be quite annoying. Plus, they get tedious, and I want to end them, but find myself unable to figure out how to stop them. In EU and CK and Rome they have a mechanic about realm stability, that shows how stable your realm is. To be fair, it is a bit overarching of a mechanic because it affects taxes, rebellions, and more. Maybe something similar, but with more limited scope, would be useful here. It should be possible to be relatively free. The USA never had any rebellions of the nature and scope that they are in this game. If they can do it in real life, I should have a path to do so in the game.

Oh, I found the highest speed setting to be too slow. I regularly wanted to speed it up a bit there.

I see Victoria II where EU2 was, which by the way was good enough to chart very very highly in my Top 100 games of all time list. I see EU3 and CK as past this.

So, overall, my evaluation would be: Fun new and interesting mechanics make this worthwhile and replayable, but there is a limit to the fun. Was it worth the 20 I paid? Yup!

You can add war goals during the war if things are going well for you. So you'd start the war with just 1 war goal (take a region), but if you beat the crap out of them, you can keep adding war goals (but without CBs, it would add more Infamy).

I think taking colonial regions doesn't add much infamy at all, so to war with Spain and take Cuba, the Philippines, etc. wouldn't add much. Plus, when I played, if I was a Great Power, I would get a lot of "Place in the Sun" CBs randomly against other nations which let me go to war for colonial provinces. I think in Vanilla, I played a lot as Japan, Prussia and the Netherlands. I got "Place in the Sun" CBs with all 3 a lot.

What were your taxes like? Social reforms? This might be why you were having so many rebellions. (Were your POPs meeting their life needs?) Taxes too high and no social reforms tend to piss the fuck out of people.

Jacobins might still be a problem in Vanilla, though. They were in 1.0 and I don't know if they were fixed by 1.2. I've been playing with a MOD and haven't had a problem with them yet.

Plurality tells you have much your population, as a whole, wants social reforms. It will drop militancy in democracies because the POPs can vote the way they want, but if they aren't getting the social reforms they demand, they will still get pissed off. If your militancy was still high, the "bonus" you got from a high plurality wasn't enough to counter all the things that upset your population.

Oh, I found the highest speed setting to be too slow. I regularly wanted to speed it up a bit there.

The game does slow down considerably in the later years. I hope they eventually find a fix for that.

dola,

And as far as war goals being limited by who is in charge, someone did make a MOD to do that but I haven't tried it yet. Might give it a go soon.

Thanks for writing!!!

Yeah, I know about adding things in war, but you shouldn;t have to spend more infamy to force someone to admit you are more powerful than they are for example.

I had virtually no taxes. None at all for middle and upper class, and lower class was very, very low - rebellions were not for that.

I never got a Place in teh Sun CB, but a lot of colonies became regular provinces as game mechanics changed, such as Cuba that we took and Belize for the British. During the game, Mexico settled Oklahoma, and then it stopped being a colony. That means places taken in the Spanish-American war would, by the game's own metrics, be full province,s and my point stands.

I saw Jacobins everywhere.

If you destroy nation after nation, taking several regions per war, your Infamy should sky rocket. Other nations should hate your guts, or at least, be afraid of you and try to contain you.

Infamy should be tied to the land being taken, though. When the US took half of Mexico in 1850, they took mostly unsettled land (well, aside from the native Americans, but no one cared about them). Taking that land should cost considerably less in Infamy than, say, taking half of France or Austria.

(But those Mexican lands shouldn't be states either....)

The Humiliate CB should be more damaging too. It's pretty much a waste as it is right now.

Sounds like Vanilla still has a lot of issues. It should be harder to make regions states (Belize should never become a British State...well, ok, you should be able to make it a state, but the AI shouldn't be so dumb as to make it a state), and there is a problem with some POPs not being able to meet their needs (as in, it's impossible for them to meet their needs)., which causes the problem with Jacobin rebels.

You could try the POP Demand Mod or the VRRP Mod, but since the Mod Selector doesn't work, you have to overwrite your game files to use them.

I appreciate your help! I'm moving on to other games for now, and when I come back, I'm sure there will be patches, mods, or an expansion that helps. It's still totally worth playing, don;t get me wrong, but I've played enough good Paradox titles to know the potential this game can have.
