Valéncia Tags Number 300
Saturday, April 4th, 2065: José Valéncia circled the bases and raised his arm in triumph. He had finally hit his 300th home run. It was a homer for a lot of people: himself; his teammates past and present; his former managers and coaches; and especially his family, who sat near the plate cheering his every at-bat during the past few games.

Valéncia spoke with BNN and said, "I knew number 300 would come sooner or later. I had to keep reminding myself, 'Relax, relax, just let it happen, let it happen.' And it finally did."

His milestone homer came in the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines 6-3 win over the Chico Rebels. Valéncia went 2 for 4 in the game, scored 1 run, and batted in 1.

For his 1450-game career Valéncia has hit .313 with 1621 hits, 1170 RBIs, and 300 home runs.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, May 1st, 2065: Hammersmith's Chris Mosley collected 30 hits to snare the Republic League Rookie of the Month for April.

He batted .291 with 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

The 21-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace.

Newcomer Honored by Continental League

Friday, May 1st, 2065: Javier Sandoval of the Baltimore Charm has been chosen the top Rookie in the Continental League.

In April he racked up 30 hits, 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 16 runs scored. He hit .349 with a .424 OBP.

Stewart Shuts out Assassins
Monday, May 18th, 2065: An efficient outing for Thomas Stewart usually means a win for Halifax. Today was no exception, as the 32-year-old starter held Apex to a long line of goose eggs. He struck out 3 and gave up 2 hits in the 7-0 shutout.

Checking out his stats for the season, Stewart has registered 5 wins and 1 loss in 10 starts, 2.39 ERA and struck out 30 batters in 64 innings.

Settlers Blank Halifax, Ortega Winner
Friday, May 22nd, 2065: Boston pitcher Esteban Ortega put on a show today and walked away with a 8-0 shutout victory over the Halifax Winter Wolves, throttling them on 2 hits. He just cruised through their lineup, fanning 4 and walking 0 in a strong outing.

"He was very efficient and he hit his spots," his manager said. "He stayed down in the zone and stayed away from the middle of the plate."

This season Ortega has compiled a 4-1 mark with a 2.78 ERA.

Serrano Slams Milestone Homer
Friday, May 29th, 2065: It was a great day for Carlos Serrano, but not a good one for his Hyannis Patriots. The 34-year-old left fielder reached a personal milestone with his 500th career homer, but it wasn't enough to beat the Hammersmith Hooligans, who came away with a 6-4 victory. Serrano finished the day with 1 hit, 1 run batted in and 1 run scored.

"Well, I've conceded the fact that you can't will yourself to hit a home run," he said. "I tried hard for the last few days. It was getting to be embarrassing with the crowd standing up every time I came to the plate."

In his 1828-game career Serrano is hitting .341 with 2574 hits, 547 doubles, 90 triples and 500 home runs. He has scored 1542 runs and driven in 1686.

Post Best RL Starter in May
Monday, June 1st, 2065: May's best hurler was Philip Post of Hartford. He overwhelmed RL hitters all month long and captured the Pitcher of the Month award as he collected a 4-2 record in 6 starts.

The 32-year-old Post added 32 strikeouts in 37.1 innings and 6 walks to his season record and compiled a 4.10 ERA. Other clubs hit .216 against him.

On his stats sheet this season Post shows a 5-5 record, 11 starts, 67 innings, 50 strikeouts and a 4.97 ERA.

Flores Chosen May's Best CL Hurler
Monday, June 1st, 2065: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, António Flores still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 30-year-old starter for Halifax was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 27 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.47 ERA in 43 innings of work.

This season Flores has a 7-1 record with a 2.31 ERA.

May's #1 Batter Announced
Monday, June 1st, 2065: Hot-hitting right fielder Héctor Guardado of the Toronto Marlboros really pounded opposing pitchers in May and collected Republic League Batter of the Month honors.

He hit .482 with 7 home runs and 32 RBIs and scored 14 runs.

This season Guardado is batting .388 with 71 hits, 9 home runs, 40 RBIs, .440 OBP and has scored 24 runs.

May's Best Batter Announced
Monday, June 1st, 2065: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Leroy Winter. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as St. Petersburg's second baseman pinned down the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .431 in May collecting 4 home runs, 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

This season Winter has hit at a .375 clip and produced 35 RBI, 8 home runs and 42 runs.

In the month of May the Baltimore second baseman was a bigtime threat. The 26-year-old Baltimore second baseman played in 23 games and hit .293 with 8 doubles, no triples and 4 home runs. Sandoval also scored 13 times and drove in 31 runs.

In 48 games this season Sandoval is batting .320 with 57 hits and 13 home runs. He has scored 29 runs and driven in 55.

400th Save for Vélez As Marlboros Hold Off Patriots
Friday, June 5th, 2065: The Toronto Marlboros really celebrated their 12-9 victory over the Hyannis Patriots at Patriots Place. Not only did the Marlboros win the game, but reliever Jorge Vélez recorded his 400th-career save. The bullpen ace stopped Hyannis on no runs and no hits in his 1 innings of work to seal the triumph.

"It's a pretty good milestone - It doesn't happen very often," Vélez said. "I was out there when my teammates needed me 400 times and I'm real proud of that."

Vélez has marked up 400 saves during his career.

Locke Clips Winged Lingerines for Cycle
Saturday, June 13th, 2065: Most fans have never seen a player get a single, double, triple and home run all in one game -- but it happened today at Ballpark of Hammersmith. Jim Locke of the Hammersmith Hooligans hit for the cycle against Ann Arbor. He went 4-5 in the 11-8 victory, scored 3 runs and had 6 runs batted in. It was a day to remember for both Locke and the fans.

J. Locke hit an RBI double in the 1st, hit an RBI triple in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off J. González in the 6th and grounded out in the 8th.

This season in 63 games Locke is batting .344 with 16 home runs, 62 RBIs and has scored 54 times.

Davenport Shows Off, Hits for Cycle
Friday, June 19th, 2065: Hitting for the cycle is defined as hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game. How often does that happen? Not very often, especially considering that a cycle is a microcosm of what makes a complete hitter -- he must possess power (homer), speed (triple) and make regular contact (four hits).

Well, Michael Davenport is a complete hitter -- at least for one ballgame. Today at Charm Ballpark he hit for the cycle to lead Baltimore Charm to a 13-5 win over the Tokyo Cyclones. All told in the game Davenport delivered 4 hits in 5 at-bats with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored.

He admitted to the press in the postgame interview, "Lotta luck in hitting for the cycle. Several unique things have to come together... all in the same game."

M. Davenport hit an RBI double in the 1st, tripled in the 3rd, struck out in the 4th, hit a GRAND SLAM off J. López in the 5th and singled in the 7th.

Thus far this year Davenport has hit .309 with 9 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Feist Voted Best RL Pitcher in June
Wednesday, July 1st, 2065: Tom Feist has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Hooligans bullpen ace collected 6 saves and 8 strikeouts in 10 innings, holding the opposition to a .278 average and posting a 1.80 ERA and a 2-1 record.

This year Tom Feist has been credited with 24 saves. In 32 relief appearances and 34.2 innings pitched, he has a 2-1 won-lost mark, 3.38 ERA and 22 strikeouts

To date this year, Martínez shows a 10-3 record, 18 starts, 114.2 innings, 74 strikeouts and a 2.59 ERA.

Escobar Named RL's Best Rookie
Wednesday, July 1st, 2065: Juan Escobar is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Hartford hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .298 average with 31 hits, 3 home runs and 23 RBIs.

This season Escobar is batting .270 with 9 home runs. He has scored 42 runs and driven in 54.

300 Homers for Veeck
Sunday, July 5th, 2065: Hyannis's 10-6 victory over Hammersmith was highlighted by Roosevelt Veeck's 300th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Veeck said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 4 at-bats the Patriots right fielder collected 1 hit in his historic game, scored 1 run, and had 3 runs batted in.

In his career Veeck has played in 1210 games with a .305 batting average. Among his 1470 hits are 280 doubles, 35 triples and 300 home runs. He also has scored 895 runs and driven in 951 runs.

Joseph Pounds HR #400
Saturday, July 18th, 2065: Toronto defeated Hammersmith today 8-7 and took some of the joy out of Andrew Joseph's 400th career home run.

"I just wanted to get a good swing on the ball all day," Joseph said. "And I did."

Despite the loss, it was a good game for the 33-year-old Hooligans third baseman. He had 2 hits, scored 1 run and had 2 runs batted in.

The Marlboros manager said, "You could see he was aggressive up there. The worst thing we did was throw him a strike. It probably would have been better if threw the ball outside of the strike zone every time he came to the plate because he seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with."

Lifetime Joseph is hitting .296 with 1723 hits, 400 home runs, 1127 runs scored and 1285 RBIs.

Well, we're at least competitive this season. Maybe we'll make a strong push at the end.

We should make the big turn next season. Rancheros in '66!

Venegas Named Top RL Hurler
Saturday, August 1st, 2065: Júlio Venegas took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors in July. After all these years playing ball, the 36-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 3-1 for Colorado last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 2.89 ERA in his 5 starts, tossing 37.1 innings and striking out 32.

This season Venegas has registered 9 wins and 2 losses in 21 starts with a 4.90 ERA.

Ortega Garners CL #1 Pitcher Award
Saturday, August 1st, 2065: It was a sensational July for Esteban Ortega as he mystified, mesmerized and terrorized opposing batters to capture the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Ortega locked down a 3-0 mark in 4 starts last month, striking out 25 while walking 8 in 33 innings and posting a 0.55 ERA.

Checking out his stats for the season, Ortega has notched 10 wins and 1 loss in 20 starts, 2.33 ERA and struck out 107 batters in 146.2 innings.

Robin Hutchesson Selected July's Best Batter
Saturday, August 1st, 2065: Robin Hutchesson battered Continental League pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Hutchesson told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 19 games, Hutchesson hit .507 with 9 home runs, 30 RBIs and scored 26 runs.

Thus far this season Hutchesson is hitting .388 with 26 home runs, 87 RBIs and 91 runs scored. He has 145 hits in 374 at-bats and has played in 97 games.

Marquee Month for Escobar, Top RL Rookie
Saturday, August 1st, 2065: Youngster Juan Escobar emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Hartford deserved the honor, batting .393 with 5 home runs and 20 runs batted in. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Escobar enjoy the limelight.

To date, Escobar has collected 119 hits for a .295 average. He has posted 14 home runs, scored 60 runs and driven in 74 runs.

CL Names Hayakawa Best Rookie
Saturday, August 1st, 2065: Ryobe Hayakawa earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Boston catcher might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Hayakawa hit .392 with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

This year Hayakawa has batted at a .324 pace with 95 hits, 20 home runs, 60 RBIs and scored 53 times.

Curtis Crowder Tames Colorado 8-2 for #200
Sunday, August 16th, 2065: Hammersmith's Curtis Crowder took the hill at Ballpark of Colorado today in search of his 200th career win.
The 35-year-old ace found it against the Colorado Rancheros.

After the historic victory, his manager told reporters, "I saw a tremendous sigh of relief when this thing was over. He was just looking to hug everyone in sight."

He worked 5.2 innings with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in the 8-2 victory, checking Colorado on 3 hits.

"It a big milestone in my career," admitted Crowder. "When you get close to it, you worry about it a lot. It's done now... and I can relax and enjoy it."

August's #1 Hurler Announced: Crowder
Tuesday, September 1st, 2065: It was a very good month for Curtis Crowder in August. The 35-year-old veteran starter for the Hammersmith Hooligans outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.

Crowder ran up a 6-0 record in his 7 starts during the month. In 44.2 innings he fanned 30 and recorded a 3.63 ERA.

So far this year Crowder has 14 wins and 9 losses and a 4.20 ERA.

Stewart Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher
Tuesday, September 1st, 2065: Whether Thomas Stewart stays in Halifax beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In August the 32-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 4-0 record and and an ERA of 1.74. In 41.1 innings he struck out 24, surrendered 31 hits, 8 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month.

This season to date Stewart has a record of 12 wins and 5 losses with a 3.39 ERA, has appeared in 30 games and struck out 100 in 183 innings.

Watanabe Named RL Batter of the Month
Tuesday, September 1st, 2065: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old Tetsuzan Watanabe put together a solid offensive month for Ann Arbor and was crowned August's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .384 with 13 home runs, 31 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

This season in 127 games Watanabe is batting .317 with 34 home runs, 121 RBIs and has scored 87 times.

CL Choice for Batter of the Month is Wood

Tuesday, September 1st, 2065: There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Chet Wood helped his contract negotiations by nabbing August's Continental League Batter of the Month honors.

The Boston shortstop put together a .362 batting average with 14 home runs, 38 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Wood continues at this brisk pace.

A look at his season totals shows Wood with 32 home runs, .304 BA, .396 OBP, 124 RBIs and 94 runs scored.

Top RL Rookie of the Month Named
Tuesday, September 1st, 2065: Andrea Goro was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old third baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen August's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Goro batted .376 for Ann Arbor, slapping 41 hits in 109 at-bats with 2 home runs, drove in 8 runs and scored 20 times.

This year Goro has hit at a .338 pace and produced 67 RBIs, 4 home runs and scored 90 runs.

August's Best Rookie Named by CL

During the month he hit .350 with 6 doubles, no triples and 6 home runs. Hayakawa also scored 14 times and drove in 21 runs.

Currently Hayakawa is batting .330 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs.
