Hank's Dream: A FBCB Dynasty
I suppose midlife crises come in many shapes and forms. For me, it came with the memory of my friend, Hank. Hank and I had been inseparable for as long as I could remember. We'd played ball together in high school, and then at college. But as you may recall, Hank's heart gave out during the 1990 West Coast Conference tournament. Our team would go on to make a run for Hank deep into the NCAA tournament, and I would go onto what many would consider a failed NBA career.
You tell yourself in those moments, that you'll never forget your friend. That you'll live each day for him. It's easy at first, and you honestly mean well. But as the days go by, and you settle into your routine, those intentions slip from your consciousness. Until something happens which brings them crashing back down upon you. I was at my house in Philly, flipping channels. There on the screen was our game against Portland. The game where Hank died. I'd never seen footage of that game before, and I'm not sure what made me stay on the channel. Perhaps, I was hoping that the stars would change, and Hank would live to meet his destiny. But as I watched him make his final basket, an alley-oop dunk that gave us a 25-13 lead, I watch him head back on defense, and see the dreams of what he could have accomplish collapse on the floor. It was one of those painful moments we all experience in life. My life was comfortable, I was successful working with my foundation in the inner-city of Philly. It was important work to be sure, but work that didn't need my constant attention. The foundation ran like a well-oiled machine. I knew that I wanted the legacy of Hank to live on, I wanted to get him a ring. And so, after a few phone calls and interviews, I became the coach at our old stomping ground, Loyola Marymount. |

I decided to bring in a new staff, and made 3 hires:
Andrew Gorski, Recruiting Coordinator Michael Deaton, Scout Michael Helmer, Assistant Coach We get our schedule hammered down, nothing too intense. We should win the majority of our out-of-conference games. Then, it's time to hit the recruiting trail. It's a little strange to be on this side. We need a rebounder inside and quick defenders on the outside. We're going old school, back to the Hank and Bo show. 2003-2004 Recruiting Class Code:

We are 12-2 heading into conference play, but go 3-11 to finish at 15-14. Gonzaga is the team to beat in this conference. We'll have our hands full dethroning them in the coming seasons. We start the offseason with the news that we've signed the #67 ranked recruiting class. The temporary excitement fades when we realize three other teams in our conference had higher ranked classes. It's gonna be a long, slow road to the top.
Our national standing has risen from 15 to 19 following our winning season. A winning season by the loosest definition of the word. We've still got a long way to go, and this season will likely be a step backwards with the loss of four seniors and with the redshirting of our first class. I convince the A.D. to give each of my assistants a small raise. But they all decide to leave for green pastures. There aren't many assistants who are willing to come here, and so we really take a step back in quality. We order our schedule from the local bakery, 14 cupcakes to pad our win total and hopefully keep our prestige rising. We only have three scholarships to offer this year, so hopefully we'll be able to aggressively target our wish list. We need help inside as well as quick defensive players on the outside. Code:

We lost out on a really good PG when South Alabama swooped in at the last second with an offer. We go 6-8 during the cupcake part of our schedule, and I've got the feeling it's gonna be tough sledding the rest of the year. And it's painful. We go 2-12 in conference and we're not even competitive. We finish 8-21, but at least next year we'll have four of our guys on the court. We're back with our first year of having our players on the court. Nobody leaves our staff, mainly because nobody else would be interested in their sorry asses. We do our typical cupcake schedule again, and we have four scholarships to fill.

Pretty satisfied, we went hard early, hoping that we could get them to sign soon. It worked, and we were able to get one of the top 100 to sign with us. He should absolutely dominate at this level as a scorer. We go 7-7 in the cupcake portion of the schedule, and 2-13 to finish out another disappointing season.
