I will already admit up-front that I will be bitching about the cold by January, but mid-80s in early October sucks.

Mother Nature not done with us yet-Michael could be a Cat 3 when it comes in over the Florida panhandle before swinging over the Carolinas as a Tropical Storm. Be safe all in his path!

Talking to friends in Panama City and there is already some local flooding at the local community college. New forecast is putting it closer to a Cat 4 than a Cat 3.

Its really odd. We heard about Florence for literally weeks, and I feel like the first we heard of this one was 2-3 days ago.

Not really. Florence formed in the Gulf, rather than off the west coast of Africa.

My wife's family is in Nashville and the surrounding area. They have a tropical storm warning and are just outside of the hurricane warning.

I'm confused by this.

Florence formed off Africa and this storm formed in the Gulf.

Said that backwards. Michael formed in the Gulf--much closer to us.

Florence also moved a lot slower this one, and did a lot of changing course. And at one point, was predicted to get pulled away from America by troughs and fronts.

You know where I am ... and we just got this locally, some 359 miles from landfall

Quote:
Oconee County Georgia Emergency Management Agency
As of 1:00 Wednesday, October 10, 2018:

Let me be very blunt. This forecast has gone to hell in a handbasket. Hurricane #Michael, a category 4 hurricane, could become a category 5 storm. I have heard the words "extreme tree damage" and "incredible damage" within the hurricane warning areas. While we are not within the hurricane or tropical storm warning areas, Oconee County borders three counties that are within the tropical storm warning area. Hurricane Michael has gone from not a big deal to a big deal pretty quickly due to unforeseen growth of the storm.

Winds in Oconee could reach 40+ miles per hour between the hours of 3AM and 11AM on Thursday (tomorrow). Rainfall estimates are still in line with where they were with us receiving 3-5 inches.

Did this unexpectedly strengthen quickly? I saw mentions of it on the news but this feels like a bigger deal than it's getting attention for.

Once they knew the track, I don't think it was so unexpected. Water temps are 5+ degrees warmer than usual in the Gulf right now. It just happened quickly because it didn't have an entire week+ to come across the ocean from Africa since it developed in the Caribbean.

Bingo. I think they predicted that it'd be a strong Cat3 shortly after it formed. I just checked; it was just a cluster of thunderstorms off the coast of Belize that got organized into a Tropical Depression on Saturday (10/6) at 9pm.

So, yeah, we haven't heard about it because it didn't exist until less than 4 days ago.

Sunday they were predicting some wind shear while it crossed. Whoops.

Official update from the 325th Fighter Wing
TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Oct.10, 2018 4:50 p.m.
Tyndall Air Force Base took a direct hit from Hurricane Michael. The base has sustained extensive damage. The Ride Out Element will conduct initial damage assessments when it is safe to do so.

Michael was a Category 4 catastrophic hurricane when it made landfall with catastrophic wind speeds. There have been no injuries reported on Tyndall at this time.

Teams will work diligently to recover base in the coming weeks. The storm brought down trees and power lines. It removed roofs from buildings and caused significant structural damage.

The conditions of the runway are unknown at this time.

The base commander ordered a mandatory evacuation of base personnel Monday, Oct. 8. This evacuation order remains in effect until further notice. Evacuated personnel should make plans for an extended time away from the base. Base officials do not have an estimate at this time for when it will be safe to return.

Egad. We are now under a tropical storm warning here in Greensboro. It is more than a 10-hour drive from here to Mexico Beach.

I love Mexico Beach. Last spring we stayed in St. George and had to evacuate for a hurricane (Memorial Day). Can't imagine that area.

It just occurred to me that in the 3 1/2 years we've lived in this house in Greensboro, we've had FAR greater impacts from tropical systems than in the eight years we lived in freakin' Charleston. *shurg*

We are going to get minor flooding this week from all the rain in the upper midwest. It is finally making its way down the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. It will back up the Meramec river (which goes through my town).

Crazy stuff.

yeah saw the Mexico Beach one-pretty awful. Hard to believe there are only 2 dead last I heard because it seemed like a lot of people stayed home.

So while all the craziness going on today with the pipe bombs, even crazier in the US territories in the Pacific, the Mariana Islands. Cat 5 typhoon with sustained winds of 180 mph and gusts up to 220. No reports yet on damage, but has to be pretty severe.

I'll never make fun of how a non-Northeast location handles a minor-to-moderate snow event again after seeing what happened in the NYC area tonight. My normal commute that is about 3 miles door to door which takes me about 35 minutes (20 minutes of which is walking) took me just over 3 hours today. And it was only that "good" because I bailed on waiting for a bus after standing in one spot in line for an hour and tried an entirely different method to get home.

Watching some of the coverage on the news reminded me of these events in the PNW except not as bad. Out there people abandon their cars on the side of the road.

We had a minor ice event around Lexington Wednesday into Thursday. Surprisingly they didn't cancel or delay school. And, as a bonus, we got some wrap-around snow last night. This is a bit too early for my liking.

We got a foot here in Newburgh and all the roads were a disaster. I84 was backed up for hours.

Got 0.35 inches of ice in Dayton yesterday. My bushes are toast.

Luckily no branches down in my yard or on my house. I never lost power, but a bunch of people are going into day 2 with no power.

We lost power between 3 and 5am Wednesday night. I haven't had a chance to assess any permanent damage to limbs since it's been raining, sleeting or snowing for most of the past day, but several branches were bent all the way to touching the ground when the ice was at its worst.
