Good news for UNC Asheville as they had the top recruiting class in the Big South. It was also 189th in the nation.

That's what I like to hear. Thanks for sharing

Nov. 2018 GWAL Wrap-Up

First lets take a look at the standings through November.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 0 .000 5 0 1.000 61 55 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 0 .000 4 0 1.000 77 71 Wichita North Redskins 0 0 .000 3 1 .750 31 71 Valparaiso 0 0 .000 3 1 .750 212 70 Kapaun Mt. I am going to refrain from handing out awards for November and December, simply because monthly awards are too hard for me to figure out. But I will do weekly awards during the GWAL conference season. I will have player of the week and freshman of the week. The conference part of this dynasty is going to look a lot different from now on.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- In one month, Charlie has won a third of the games than he did all of last season. I think we can contribute that to a pretty solid recruiting class. Their best win is against Oakland, but they did get beat by over 50 against Mississippi St.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- It hasn't been an easy month for ol Mr. Woods, as they are currently 1-2, but their only win was by 1 measly point against Belmont. Their losses were to South Carolina and Lipscomb.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- All 3 of their games were highlighted as they went 1-2 in their November tournament.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- Deacon and the Bluejays haven't exactly shined so far to start the season. After their loss to Central Florida, they had to rally from 9 down at halftime to beat Jackson State. Right now they are 2-1.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- After losing by 4 to Southern Miss, B.B. Gunn rallied his troops to 3 straight wins against decent competition: Toledo, Seattle, and San Diego.

December 2018 Wrap-Up

1 tournament to tell you about this month, as Hawaii was playing in it.

2018 San Juan Classic

Hawaii got hammered by (3) Alabama in the first round, 69-43. Then they beat (7) Ohio 68-52 in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place game, they beat (8) Cal St. Northridge 88-83.

Here are the GWAL Standings through December of 2018.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 0 .000 9 3 .750 44 55 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 0 .000 9 3 .750 112 71 Valparaiso 0 0 .000 9 3 .750 129 70 Wichita North Redskins 0 0 .000 8 4 .667 51 71 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 0 0 .000 7 3 .700 292 62 Detroit 0 0 .000 6 7 .462 315 55 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 0 .000 5 6 .455 140 51 Wichita Heights Falcons 0 0 .000 4 6 .400 268 66 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 0 .000 4 6 .400 274 53

Good to see 5 GWAL teams with solid records, and the other 4 teams just a game or 2 under .500.

Valparaiso (Shane Kormelink) started the month of December with a loss to Montana, and ended the month with a loss to Cal St. Fullerton. Neither of these are bad losses, as they have RPI's of 103 and 9, respectively.

Wichita North (Rick Jolley) lost to Arkansas, Oklahoma St., and Bowling Green. The Bowling Green loss hurts a bit, but the Redskins are still in good shape.

Wichita Northwest (Chris Prewitt) won all of their games in December, but only 1 of those 7 wins came against a team with a non-losing record. That team was Nebraska and even their record is only 6-6. It's hard to get a read on how good the Grizzlies really are.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) had a solid win against Kansas St. to end the month, and had a tough loss to Alabama to begin the month. They seem to be playing well right now.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 3-9, 0-1 Big South. They lost all their games in December, returning to the land of infamy. Their closest losses were to Gardner-Webb in the conference opener.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 4-6, 0-0 CAA. It was a rough month for Charlie, as his team was blown out in almost every game. They did beat Western Carolina and Mercer.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 2-9, 0-2 Horizon. Kuji is pretty much digging his own grave with the Titans now. In December, they were blown out by bouth Wichita North and Bishop Carroll, as well as conference foe Green Bay. Looks like he may be looking for a new team next year.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 9-2, 1-1 MVC. The Bluejays have played a pretty weak non-conference schedule, with their best OOC win against Penn St. in their opening game. They beat Wichita St. and lost to Southern Illinois in the MVC so far.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 7-6, 0-0 WAC. Their best OOC win was against Virginia Tech, as it seems like they've fallen into the pattern of winning a game, then losing a game or 2, and so forth. Not a lot of consistency there.

Here are the top 25 polls as we enter January 2019.

Dec. 31-Jan. 6 GWAL Recap

This is where you'll begin to see a huge change in the dynasty report. Conference season has started in the GWAL. First, let's look at our Game of the Week.

Wichita North @ Bishop Carroll - Jan. 5

The Redskins have been the cream of the crop in the GWAL for the last couple of years, but Bishop Carroll has really come on strong to start the season. Will North continue their league dominance, or will BC establish a new force.?

Other Key Games

Wichita Northwest @ Valparaiso- Jan. 5 -- Valpo was the cinderella team last season, their first as a GWAL member, and Northwest has slowly been getting better every year.

Wichita Northwest @ Kapaun Mt. Carmel- Jan. 1 -- A battle of teams that are consistently improving, although Kapaun has had their struggles thus far this season.

Now, I'm going to give scores for all GWAL games for the week, starting with Jan. 1st. FOFC teams will be bolded for these recaps.

Jan 1, 2012

Kapaun- 96, Northwest- 90
North- 76, Detroit- 51

Jan. 3, 2012

Valparaiso- 108, Heights- 103 (OT)
East- 83, Southeast- 78
Kapaun- 93, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi- 89 (OT) (non-conference)

Jan. 5, 2012

Valparaiso- 94, Northwest- 85
East- 78, Detroit- 64
North- 75, Bishop Carroll- 65 (OT)
Heights- 90, Southeast- 85 (OT)

Before we take a look at our key games, let's look at the standings after the first week of GWAL play.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Valparaiso 2 0 1.000 11 3 .786 93 70 Wichita North Redskins 2 0 1.000 10 4 .714 40 71 Wichita East Blue Aces 2 0 1.000 7 6 .538 84 51 Kapaun Mt. Now let's recap our 3 key games for the week, starting with our game of the week.

Game of the Week Recap

Wichita North @ Bishop Carroll

This game didn't dissapoint. Carroll jumped out to an early 10-4 lead thanks to high pressure defense, and led by 1 at the half. The Redskins hit a late shot to send the game to OT, then took over. A big three pointer by David Chasse opened the door, and then Carroll had to resort to fouling. Chasse and Joseph Holliman were money from the free throw line and the Redskins pulled away for the 75-65 victory.

Key Game Recaps

Northwest at Kapaun

Both teams shot lights out from the field: The Grizzlies at 55% and the Crusaders at 45%. Northwest had 3 players in double figures, but could not stop Kapaun's Don Bullard who was darn near perfect for the game: 8-11 from the field, 10-12 at the line, and hit all 3 of his three pointers, finishing with 29 points as the Crusaders won 96-90.

Northwest at Valparaiso

The line in this game: Valpo was 31-35 from the free throw line, taking advantage of their opportunities in a 94-85 victory, dropping the Grizzlies to 0-2 on the young conference season.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 3-11, 0-3 Big South. Charlie is still looking for his first win in conference play this season, as his team lost to Radford 58-53 and High Point 87-67 this week.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 4-8, 0-2 CAA. Another team still looking for their first conference win, as they lost to 64-57 to William & Mary, and 68-53 at VCU this week.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 2-11, 0-4 Horizon. Our third FOFC coach looking for a conference win. They lost to Illinois-Chicago (85-51) and Wichita West (74-68) this week.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 10-3, 2-2 MVC. The Bluejays split their games this week, beating Missouri State 67-44 and losing 87-76 to Bradley.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 7-6, 0-0 WAC. It was a relaxing week for B.B and the Rainbows, who had no games. They have their conference opener coming up against Utah St.

Here are the top 25 polls for the week beginning Jan. 7th.

I just want to say, I am really liking this new conference report format I came up with. I like the week by week, and I think I'm going to keep it. Let me know what you FOFCers think, especially the ones that aren't in the GWAL. I'm trying to highlight your weekly games too. I toyed with doing some weekly awards, but I'm not too good with that kind of stuff. Anything you guys would like to see added? Or are you happy the way it is?

Southeast @ North- Jan. 8 -- The Buffaloes are still looking for their first conference win, and have a chance to play spoiler against the GWAL favorite Redskins.

East @ Kapaun Mt. Carmel- Jan. 12 -- When the GWAL entered NCAA Division 1, East was one of the highest prestige teams. They are off to a 2-0 start in conference this season. Kapaun also turned a corner last year. This will be a battle of teams looking to break into the upper tier of the GWAL.

Game of the Week Recap

Bishop Carroll @ Valparaiso -- Valpo dominated this game in every way. In fact, they were so dominating that 3 of their players almost had double doubles. John Hamilton did have a double double with 12 points and 16 boards. Wilbert Carnahan led all scorers with 28 and added 9 boards. Oliver Thomas just missed with 9 points and 9 boards. The final score was 78-63 Valpo.

Key Game Recaps

Southeast at North -- Southeast used a pressure defense in the first half to force 9 Redskin turnovers and jump out to a 39-21 halftime lead. They were able to get a lot of fast break points from the Redskin turnovers, and ended up shooting almost 50% in route to a 73-62 victory.

East @ Kapaun -- The Aces proved tonight that they aren't ready to be in the upper tier of things, as the Crusaders hammered them, 71-53. Kapaun had a pair of 19 point scorers, while East had a couple 10 point scorers.

And now lets look at the standings:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Valparaiso 3 1 .750 12 4 .750 84 70 Wichita North Redskins 3 1 .750 11 5 .688 57 71 Kapaun Mt. Southeast handed both Valpo and North their first conference losses this week, opening things up. Bishop Carroll just keeps going farther and farther downhill, while Northwest has opened up conference play with some struggles.

GWAL Jan. 14-20, 2019

Not a lot of big time games this week. A lot of top half vs. bottom half type games, and a few non-conference games. I've picked out 2 games this week of importance.

Game of the Week

Southeast @ Kapaun - Jan. 15 -- Kapaun is only .500 on the season, but they have a better conference record than Southeast. However, the Buffaloes just came off a week where they handed both North and Valparaiso their first conference loss.

Other Key Game

Northwest @ North - Jan. 19 -- Northwest badly needs a conference win, as they only have 1 so far. North is coming off a loss to Southeast, and needs to recover.

Game Scores

Jan. 14, 2019

Wichita North 102, at North Carolina Central 79 (non-conference)

Jan. 15, 2019

at Kapaun Mt. Carmel 81, Wichita Southeast 73
Wichita Northwest 76, at Wichita East 64

Jan. 17, 2019

Wichita Heights 83, at Bishop Carroll 67
Valparaiso 62, at Detroit 61
Wichita Southeast 84, at North Carolina Central 69 (non-conference)

Jan. 19, 2019

at Valparaiso 81, Wichita East 70
Kapaun Mt. Carmel 79, at Wichita Heights 62
at Bishop Carroll 73, Detroit 66
at Wichita North 76, Wichita Northwest 66

Game of the Week Recap

Southeast @ Kapaun Mt. Carmel -- The Crusaders were led by Wade Dalton in this one, who pumped in 29 points, and also had 10 boards. Kapaun outrebounded Southeast 43-29, and it made the difference as the Crusaders held on for an 81-73 victory.

Key Game Recap

North used the 3 point line to take control of this game, making 13 treys while Northwest only made 4. Defensively the Redskins were sharp, when they weren't fouling. North held the Grizzlies to just 36% shooting, but Northwest was 26-33 from the line. However, that couldn't counter the Redskins hot shooting from behind the arc, and North won 76-66.

Now let's look at the GWAL standings.

Although it's still fairly early in the season, it's looking like we may have a 3 team race between Valpo, North, and Kapaun. Maybe if Heights, East, or Southeast can get hot and make a run, they'll make things interesting. Even Northwest could make a run, but don't expect much out of Carroll or Detroit.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 4-14, 1-6 Big South. Asheville got their first conference win in a big way, hammering Coastal Carolina 85-44, then they lost to Charleston Southern 73-65.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 7-9, 3-3 CAA. They lost a tough one at UNC Wilmington 77-66, but rallied to win at Drexel 62-57. A split this week for Charlie Woods' team.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 4-14, 2-5 Horizon. It was a busy week for the Titans, who had 3 games. 2 of them were non-conference, as they lost at Colorado State 59-49, then went to Austin Peay and lost 84-63. They then returned home and beat conference foe Youngstown State 84-73.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 12-4, 4-3 MVC. It was a split at home this week for the Bluejays, who lost to Indiana St. 78-63, then beat Drake 88-75.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 9-8, 2-2 WAC. Hawaii split this week, going on the road to beat Gonzaga 80-66, then coming back home to lose to Nevada 80-68.

Here are the top 25 polls for the week of Jan. 21, 2019

2 votes for Valpo, and as long as they keep winning, they should keep receiving votes. North needs to keep winning too.

GWAL Jan. 21-27, 2019

Game of the Week

Valaraiso @ North - Jan. 26 -- Pretty easy call here. Top 2 teams in the GWAL battling to be at the top all by themselves.

Other Key Games

Kapaun Mt. Carmel @ Valparaiso - Jan. 24 -- However, before Valpo goes to North, they've got to beat the 3rd place Crusaders. Naturally this would be a key game.

Bishop Carroll @ Southeast - Jan. 22 -- A game of underachieving teams. Southeast had a tough week last week after beating North and Valpo a week before. They need a win to stay in the thick of things. Bishop Carroll just needs a win, period.

Game Scores

Jan. 21, 2019

Wichita Northwest 64, at Georgia 62 (non-conference)
at Wichita Heights 74, Central Arkansas 63 (non-conference)

Nice OOC wins for a couple struggling GWAL teams.

Jan. 22, 2019

at Wichita Southeast 70, Bishop Carroll 64

Jan. 24, 2019

Kapaun Mt. Carmel 92, at Valparaiso 74
Detroit 84, at Wichita Northwest 69
Wichita North 64, at Wichita East 33

Jan. 26, 2019

Bishop Carroll 75, at Kapaun Mt. Carmel 54
at Wichita East 60, Wichita Heights 45
at Wichita North 53, Valparaiso 47
Wichita Southeast 61, at Detroit 54

Game of the Week Recap

Valparaiso @ North -- This game lost some steam after Valpos loss to Kapaun, but still they had something to play for. This was a defensive game all the way. Holding teams to 32.7% shooting would normally win you the game, but Valpo shot just a dismal 29.8% in a 53-47 loss.

Key Game Recaps

Kapaun @ Valparaiso -- I'm not sure if Valpo was looking ahead to North or not, but they let the Crusaders shoot 56.7% from the field, while shooting only 37% themselves. The result: a 92-74 loss.

Bishop Carroll @ Southeast -- A hard fought game in which neither time played well offensively, but the Buffaloes blocked 10 shots, and got a massive double double from John Gomez who had 21 points and 17 rebounds. That helped Southeast to a 60-54 victory.

Here are the standings as we are just about to the halfway point of the conference season:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita North Redskins 6 1 .857 15 5 .750 44 71 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 5 2 .714 10 8 .556 118 53 Valparaiso 5 3 .625 14 6 .700 91 70 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 4 3 .571 14 6 .700 106 71 Wichita East Blue Aces 3 4 .429 8 11 .421 127 51 Wichita Heights Falcons 3 4 .429 8 10 .444 208 66 Bishop Carroll Eagles 2 5 .286 11 8 .579 70 55 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 2 5 .286 10 8 .556 236 62 Detroit 2 5 .286 8 12 .400 267 55

So a bad week for Valpo has dropped them to third in the rankings, and Kapaun vaults to second. Southeast had a good week, but are still 2 games behind

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 4-6, 1-8 Big South. An 0-2 week for the Shocker and Asheville, as they lost 72-63 at Winthrop and 75-62 at Presbytarian.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 8-10, 4-4 CAA. It was a split this week, as Georgia State lost 86-72 at Hofstra, and then rallied to beat Old Dominion at home, 53-50.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 4-16, 2-7 Horizon. I have a feeling Kujis fate is all but sealed. 2 close losses this week, 75-75 vs. Butler, and 67-63 vs. Cleveland St. Gotta win the close ones Kuji!

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 13-5, 5-4 MVC. The splits continue for Creighton. A tough 72-71 loss at Evansville to start the week, then going to Illinois State and beating them 90-76.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 10-9, 3-2 WAC. Hawaii started the week in promising fashion, winning at Louisiana Tech 75-68. But then they return home for a dismal non-conference loss to Stetson, 67-66 in OT. Ouch!

Let's take a look at the top 25 polls for the week of Jan. 28, 2019.

GWAL Jan. 28-Feb. 3, 2019

Game of the Week

Loyola-IL @ Valparaiso - Jan. 28 -- There is a lack of important games this week, so we have to go outside the conference to find our GotW. Valpo does battle with former Horizon foe in a game that could have major postseason implications.

Other Key Game

Kapaun @ Northwest - Feb. 3 -- 2 teams that are up and down in the GWAL, and both really needing a key victory here.

Game Scores

Jan. 28, 2019

at Valparaiso 95, Loyola-IL 84 (non-conference)

Jan. 29, 2019

at Bishop Carroll 91, Chicago State 84

Jan. 31, 2019

at Kapaun Mt. Carmel 74, Wichita North 62
Detroit 71, at Wichita Heights 57
Wichita East 68, at Bishop Carroll 55
Wichita Northwest 93, at Wichita Southeast 86

Feb. 2, 2019

at Valparaiso 87, Wichita Heights 80
at Wichita Northwest 85, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 73
at Wichita East 98, Wichita Southeast 74
at Detroit 63, Wichita North 52

Game of the Week Recap

Loyola-IL @ Valparaiso -- Both teams were hot offensively today, but the difference is Valpo was more aggressive, going to the line 37 times, while Loyola only made it there 8 times. This led to a big 85-74 non-conference victory for Valpo.

Key Game Recap

Kapaun @ Northwest -- Both teams shot over 50% from the field, but the difference was that the Grizzlies outrebounded KMC 41-30. Getting a double double from Reed Robeson (12 points, 13 boards), Northwest got the 85-73 win.

Here are the updated conference standings as we move into February:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 6 3 .667 11 9 .550 111 53 Wichita North Redskins 6 3 .667 15 7 .682 59 71 Valparaiso 6 3 .667 16 6 .727 68 70 Wichita East Blue Aces 5 4 .556 10 11 .476 78 51 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 4 5 .444 14 8 .636 152 71 Detroit 4 5 .444 10 12 .455 223 55 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 4 5 .444 12 8 .600 182 62 Wichita Heights Falcons 3 6 .333 8 12 .400 224 66 Bishop Carroll Eagles 2 6 .250 12 9 .571 112 55

Things have certainly gotten tight in the GWAL, as the 2 game losing streak by the Redskins have made it a 3 way tie again. And look at East, who has a winning conference record. At this point, I don't think you can count any team out, but it'll take a miracle for Heights and Carroll to get back into it.

GWAL Feb. 4-10, 2019

Game of the Week

North @ Southeast - Feb. 9 -- A game that Southeast needs to get back in the conference race. After 2 losses last week, North really needs to establish some control of the GWAL again.

Other Key Games

East @ Detroit - Feb. 5 -- Normally 2 teams with losing records wouldn't make for a key game, but East is trying to keep a winning record in conference and possibly make a push for a top 4 finish. Detroit is looking to break into the top half as well. Both coaches are on the hotseat, so which team is going to respond better for their coach?

Valparaiso @ Northwest -- Both teams still have a great shot to win the GWAL if they can get hot. Northwest probably needs a win worse, as they are currently under .500 in conference.

Game Scores

Feb. 5, 2019

Wichita Southeast 85, at Wichita Heights 56
Wichita East 93, at Detroit 88 (OT)

Feb. 7, 2019

at Wichita Northwest 80, Valparaiso 72
at Wichita North 75, Bishop Carroll 67
Kapaun Mt. Carmel 79, at SIU Edwardsville 72 (non-conference)

Feb. 9, 2019

at Kapaun Mt. Carmel 70, Detroit 68
Wichita Northwest 91, at Wichita Heights 64
Valparaiso 88, at Bishop Carroll 81
Wichita North 63, at Wichita Southeast 40
Lipscomb 87, at Wichita East 68 (non-conference)

Game of the Week Recap

North @ Southeast -- This didn't turn out to be much of a game, as North held Southeast to 31.4% shooting and led 35-18 at halftime. They forced 23turnovers and won easily, 63-40.

Key Game Recaps

East @ Detroit -- This game had flashes of greatness, but flashes of ugliness too. East led by 4 at halftime, but both teams had over 20 turnovers. It took overtime, but East eventually won 93-88.

Valparaiso @ Northwest -- Valpo had only 3 turnovers the entire game, as they really took care of the basketball. Unfortunately they were outrebounded 53-34 and it was too much to overcome, as Northwest won 80-72.

Here are the current standings for the GWAL:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita North Redskins 8 3 .727 17 7 .708 59 71 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 7 3 .700 13 9 .591 109 53 Valparaiso 7 4 .636 17 7 .708 64 70 Wichita East Blue Aces 6 4 .600 11 12 .478 81 51 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 6 5 .545 14 8 .636 153 62 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 5 6 .455 15 9 .625 151 71 Detroit 4 7 .364 10 14 .417 227 55 Wichita Heights Falcons 3 8 .273 8 14 .364 219 66 Bishop Carroll Eagles 2 8 .200 12 11 .522 103 55

This has turned into a 4, possibly 5 team race. It'll be interesting to see what East and Northwest can bring into the mix.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 11-11, 7-5 CAA. Big wins this week for Charlie and Georgia State. They won 83-66 vs. Drexel and then won 68-66 vs. VCU.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 6-18, 4-9 Horizon. The Titans got a nice win against Milwaukee, 77-67, and lost a tough one to Loyola-IL, 72-60.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 17-5, 8-4 MVC. The Bluejays rolled over Texas State 78-57 in a non-conference game, then got back in conference, beating Northern Iowa 90-68.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 10-13, 3-6 WAC. The slide continues for Mr. Gunn, as Hawaii lost 60-43 to Saint Marys, then lost 69-56 at Utah St.

Exciting to stack up four straight wins, including two on the road against teams who were above Northwest in the standings. I had pretty much written off this season after losing at home by 15 to cellar-dwellar Detroit but it looks like the kids haven't stopped fighting just yet.

GWAL Feb. 11-17, 2019

Game of the Week

Kapaun Mt. Carmel @ East - Feb. 12 -- A chance for the Blue Aces to prove they are capable of competing in the GWAL this season, as a win here would be huge. Kapaun needs to avoid the upset.

Other Key Games

Southeast @ Valparaiso - Feb. 14 -- Southeast has a chance to play spoiler this week, as they have 2 games this week against 2 of the top 3 teams in the conference.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel @ Southeast - Feb. 16 -- Same thing here. Kapaun has been turning a corner the past couple seasons, while Southeast has been mildly inconsistent. A win is key for both programs. Who will answer the call?

Game of the Week Recap

Kapaun @ East -- Simply put, free throw shooting was the difference in this game. KMC was 5-13 from the line, while East was 15-21 from the line. Those extra 10 free points made the difference, as the Blue Aces won 70-62.

Key Game Recaps

Southeast @ Valparaiso -- Valpo had no answer for Southeast SF John Gomez, who let Valpo up for 32 points, including 6 of 6 from the three point line. The Buffaloes also outrebounded Valpo 50-32, leading to a 77-66 victory.

Kapaun @ Southeast -- Poor Kapaun could never get on track, as they shot just 28.8% from the field. Ouch. John Gomez was hot again, as he finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Southeast rolled to a 74-55 victory.

Here are the standings as we get closer to the end of the regular season.

Barring a major collapse, the Redskins should be in good position to win yet another GWAL regular season title. But look at the mess in spots 2 through 6. All 5 of those teams, if they get hot, could make things interesting. The question is who will survive the grind? I think we can safely rule Detroit, Heights, and Carroll out of the running.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 7-19, 4-11 Big South. A nice week for Asheville, as they won at Charleston Southern 56-45, then rallied from an 18 point halftime deficit to win at Coastal Carolina, 81-76.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 13-11, 9-5 CAA. Charlie Woods' team keeps on winning, as they won at Delaware 53-48, then hosted UNC Wilmington and won 71-64. They now have a 5 game winning streak going.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 7-19, 4-10 Horizon. The Titans hosted North Dakota in a non-conference game and won 88-82, then went back to conference play, losing at Youngstown State 71-57.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 19-5, 10-4 MVC. The winning streak is now 7 for Deacon and the Bluejays. This week, they won at Drake, 102-91, then they won at Indiana St. 80-72.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 10-15, 3-8 WAC. The slide continues for B.B., as his Hawaii team has now lost 6 in a row. They lost at Boise St. 72-69, and lost vs. Nevada 65-58.

Sigh - we now have losses to all 3 of the teams at the bottom of the conference. Winning even one of those three games would make Northwest a lot more interesting conference contender. I think we're playing for NIT or a hot run in the conference tourney at this point.

That loss to Bishop Carroll was a killer. I don't even know what happened that game. Just tough luck. I would say that we are going to have 3 or 4 teams in the NIT this season

GWAL Feb. 18-24, 2019

Game of the Week

North @ Northwest - Feb. 21 -- A big game for both teams. North has a great chance to clinch the regular season title with a victory here, but Northwest is looking to play spoilers, gain a game on North, and better their postseason chanes.

Other Key Game

Valparaiso @ Kapaun Mt. Carmel - Feb. 23 -- The 2nd and 3rd place teams in the conference, and both are looking to stay close to North. Kapaun needs this game worse from a postseason standpoint.

Game Scores

Game of the Week Recap

North @ Northwest -- Neither team was offensively efficient this game, both shooting below 39%. The difference was on the glass. The Grizzlies had 15 offensive rebounds and converted 8 of them into second chance buckets. That made the difference as Northwest got a huge 67-61 win.

Key Game Recap

Valaparaiso @ Kapaun -- This was a 1 point game at halftime, but Kapaun took over in the second half, winning 79-65, as they held Valpo to just 34% shooting for the game.

Here are the standings in the GWAL as we head into the last week of conference play:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita North Redskins 10 4 .714 20 8 .714 52 71 Wichita East Blue Aces 8 6 .571 13 14 .481 88 51 Kapaun Mt. All North needs to do is win 1 conference game next week and they win the GWAL. We still have a major race for spots 2 thru 6. Northwest has gotten to be kicking themselves. 4 losses against the bottom 3 teams in the GWAL, or they could be on top.

GWAL Feb. 25-March 3, 2019

I decided not to choose any key games for this week, as I wanted to get this last week finished, so we're jumping right into the game scores.

Game Scores

Feb. 26, 2019

Detroit 57, at Wichita Southeast 49

Feb. 27, 2019

Wichita Northwest 87, at North Carolina Central 78 (non-conference)

Feb. 28, 2019

at Valparaiso 71, Wichita North 65
at Wichita Heights 88, Wichita East 45
Kapaun Mt. Carmel 73, at Bishop Carroll 71

March 2, 2019

at Wichita Northwest 70, Wichita Southeast 57
at Wichita East 76, Bishop Carroll 58
Kapaun Mt. Carmel 71, at Wichita North 65
Wichita Heights 80, at Detroit 69

Let's look at the final GWAL standings:

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 10 6 .625 16 12 .571 115 53 Wichita North Redskins 10 6 .625 20 10 .667 53 71 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 9 7 .563 18 10 .643 133 62 Valparaiso 9 7 .563 19 10 .655 79 70 Wichita East Blue Aces 9 7 .563 14 15 .483 105 51 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 8 8 .500 19 11 .633 120 71 Wichita Heights Falcons 7 9 .438 12 16 .429 218 66 Detroit 6 10 .375 12 18 .400 215 55 Bishop Carroll Eagles 4 12 .250 14 15 .483 148 55

What a crazy week. The Redskins just needed to win 1 game to clinch the GWAL regular season title and the #1 seed in the GWAL Tournament, but they lose both their games, by the same score. By virtue of sweeping North, the Crusaders of Kapaun get the #1 seed in the GWAL tournament. I have to say it has been a down year for the GWAL. Every single team had at least 10 losses. I won't be surprised to see only 1 or maybe 2 of our teams in the Big Dance.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 9-20, 6-12 Big South. Asheville finished their regular season with an 83-78 victory vs. Gardner-Webb. They tied with VMI for 8th place in the conference, but since VMI won both regular season games, Asheville will not qualify for the Big South tournament and their season is over.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 16-12, 12-6 CAA. Georgia State finished their CAA regular season with an 85-71 victory at George Mason. They have one more game remaining with Kennesaw State, a non-conference game.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 8-22, 5-13 Horizon. The Titans lost 71-57 vs. Green Bay and then lost 71-63 to Wright State. They finished dead last in the Horizon Conference and will get the #9 seed in the tournament. There are already rumors going around the Mr. Chagulia will be looking for a new job next season.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 22-6, 13-5 MVC. The Bluejays had their winning streak broken at Wichita State, as the Shockers won 68-51. Creighton rallied for a 95-91 win at Southern Illinois, and will finish the regular season off with a game against Wichita Heights.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 11-17, 4-10 WAC. Hawaii ended their losing streak in a big way, hammering Fresno St. 76-49. They have 2 conference games next week to finish off the regular season.

Here are the Top 25 Polls for the week beginning March 4, 2019

There were a few non-conference games on March 4, 2019. Let's look at those.

at Creighton 96, Wichita Heights 84
Wichita Northwest 76, at Wichita State 63
Wichita North 79, at Cal State Bakersfield 76
at Longwood 79, Wichita East 64

So a bad loss for the Blue Aces of Wichita East, who are going to have to win the GWAL tourney to get a postseason berth. Quality win for Wichita Northwest.

2019 GWAL Quarterfinals

(1) Kapaun beat (8) Detroit 78-68
(4) Valparaiso beat (5) Wichita East 83-73, most likely ending East's season.
(2) Wichita North beat (7) Wichita Heights 86-67.
(3) Wichita Northwest beat (6) Wichita Southeast 80-79 in a thriller.

So neither the #1 or #2 seed are in the GWAL championship, which shows the parity of the conference this year. Could be a good or bad thing.

(3) Wichita Northwest beat (4) Valparaiso 84-78!

Congrats to Chris Prewitt and the Grizzlies who endured and up and down season to win the GWAL, beating 2 of the top 3 teams in the conference.

As for my predictions.. we know the Grizzlies are going dancing. I think Wichita North and Valpo could get at-large berths. At the very least they should be high seeds in the NIT. Wichita Southeast looks to be NIT bound, and Kapaun, by virtue of winning the GWAL regular season title but not winning the GWAL tournament, should receive an auto berth to the NIT. Wichita East, Detroit, Wichita Heights, and Bishop Carrol should be done.

Big South Tournament

UNC Asheville did not qualify.

CAA Tournament

6th seed Georgia State lost in the quarterfinals to (6) Delaware 53-42.

Horizon Tournament

10th seed Wichita South lost to (3) Wright State 93-74.

MVC Tournament

2nd seed Creighton beat (7) Bradley 68-63 in the quarterfinals, and then lost to (6) Drake 93-85 in the quarterfinals.

WAC Tournament

7th seed Hawaii lost to (2) Utah State 62-60 in the quarterfinals.

Of our 5 FOFC and non GWAL coaches, only 1 of those teams can feel comfortable about going to the postseason. Creighton should be dancing with a 24-7 record and 51 RPI. They are considered a lock in the latest bubble watch. Georgia State is the only other FOFC school with a winning record, at 17-13. Their 94 RPI may be good enough to get them into the CBI or the CIT.

I was worried that we won games in the last week, and that we might end up having to play one of the bottom three teams

Very cool to get into the NCAAs, after what had been a very up-and-down season. I don't expect to get too good a seed, but maybe we can continue our run of showing up for games against better competition.

From what I've seen of game reports, it seems like this club hits the glass pretty hard. So I guess we'll hang our hat on that going into the tourney.

Florida State (James Cole) -- Cole's first season at Florida State ended with an 18-14 record, 10-6 in the ACC, good for the 4th seed in the ACC tournament. They lost their quarterfinal game to (5) Clemson, 90-65.

Non-GWAL

Arizona is the top seed in the NCAA West Region and will play (16) Idaho St. in the first round.

Creighton is the 5th seed in the NCAA Midwest Region and gets (12) Wichita Northwest first round.

Clemson is the 3rd seed in the NCAA Midwest Region and gets (14) Sam Houston State first round.

Oklahoma is the 9th seed in the NCAA South Region and gets (8) UCLA in the first round.

Memphis is the 3rd seed in the NCAA South Region and gets (14) Ball State in the first round.

Oregon is the 5th seed in the NIT Midwest Region and will travel to (4) Iowa St. in the second round.

Arkansas is the top seed in the NIT East Region and will host the winner of the game between (8) Utah St. and (9) Kapaun in the second round.

Florida St. is the 4th seed in the NIT East Region and will host (5) Stony Brook in the second round.

Georgia State is the 3rd seed in the CIT and will host (14) UNC-Wilmington in the first round. WTF? UNC-Wilmington is in the same conference as Georgia State. That's a bug in the game I think.

Man, that was disappointing. Couldn't close out the conference championship and couldn't win the tourney. The NIT isn't bad for the first year, but there was a lot of potential to do more.

How in the world did we get a 5th seed in NCAA with an RPI over 100? Don't mean to disparage what looks to be a great draw for us, but that sounds a bit off.

whoops, sorry guys. I mistyped that. Wichita Northwest got the 12th seed, not the 5th seed. Let me edit that

Congrats to Wichita SE on winning a title. Cool to see our guys win a game in the tourney. Fear the 12 seeds!

Hoping to see a nice little prestige bump, along with a good recruiting class coming in.

Any chance of getting a short write-up on what teams are losing/returning? I get a sense of what they are like based on results and some of the "game of the week" write-ups, but I don't have a sense for whether teams are on the rise, losing a bunch of guys, etc.

I can do that for the FOFC teams. I don't think it's necessary to do it for all the teams unless you absolutely want me to. If anybody else has an opinion on the matter, let me know.

Also, Southeast actually didn't win the title, they lost the CBI 2 games to 1.

Oops - yeah, upon further review SE losing by 38 in the showdown game isn't exactly a "go conference!" moment.
