FOF 2007: A Philadelphia Eagles Dynasty
For whatever reason, I've never done a FOF dynasty, and I'm in the mood to start one. It helps me to get to know my FOF Team when I write it out and I figure maybe a few people will enjoy reading it (although most of you are probably too busy playing.)
I'm using Chemisty, full X-Factor, the default roster, and the highest difficulty level. I will gameplan and make all roster decisions myself. Here is an initial look at the roster:
Next up will be a review of actual ratings, strengths, and weaknesses of each player.

Our scout is very good in most areas.
QB Situation: The X Factor was not kind to Donovan. He is only rated 56/56 and he is particularly weak on the 20-30 yard passes, but is good at the really deep ball. He excels at the medium pass. His accuracy and timing are strengths. His biggest weakness is running the 2 minute drill. Jeff Garcia is rated 25/25 and is just barely acceptable at everything. Good scrambler. Has a mild conflict with Matt Schobel. A.J. Feeley is rated 12/37. Timing is his greatest strength, I certainly wouldn't want him on the field for more than a game or so at this time. Running Backs: Westbrook is a real strength for us. Rated 72/72. Has all of the attributes to excel as a pass receiver and be an above average runner. Not great at picking up the blitz. Correll Buckhalter is rated 33/43 and has skills to be a decent backup certainly. Reno Mahe is rated 30/35 and also has some decent skills, particularly good elusiveness. Ryan Moats is rated 20/30 and most of his potental is as a receiver out of the backfield. FB: Thomas Tapeh is our only FB on the roster. He is rated 38/60 and has potential to be a top notch run blocker. Has the potential to be above average in most areas as a FB. TE: L.J. Smith is another strength on this team. Rated 72/72. Just average as a blocker, but is an excellent receiver. Matt Schobel is rated 33/40. Poor blocker, but a decent receiver. Mike Bartrum is rated 35/35. Decent blocker, poor receiver. WR's: Donte' Stallworth - Rated 43/45. Has average receiving skills with a propensity to drop it a bit more than I would like. Has excellent deep ball skills. Reggie Brown - Rated 31/59. Still a real liability to drop the ball, but has very good potential. Greg Lewis - Rated 32/35. Has great deep speed, but has horrible hands. Hank Baskett - Rated 22/35. Great deep speed, but poor hands. Jason Avant - Rated 22/38. Has the potential to be decent in most areas of the receiving game. Has a mild affinity with Schobel. Jeremy Bloom - Rated 18/30. Has very good deep speed, but doesn't do much else well. Has exceptional affinity wiht Schobel. Has some special teams ability which might keep him on the team. C: Jamaal Jackson is it. Rated 32/72. Has the potential to be a dominant blocker. Will likely start as he is our only C on the roster, and I think he has enough potential to start now. G: Max Jean-Gilles is rated 29/61. Has enough potential that he will probably start at LG for us. However, he is definitely a weak blocker right now. Shawn Andrews got the bad end of the X-Factor. Rated 19/28 and is a very poor blocker. Might make it as a backup because... Rookie Scott Young is rated 4/9. Very unlikely to make the team. We have the cap space so RG seems like it will be a priority ASAP. T: William Thomas is rated 59/59. He is a good LT with balanced blocking skills. Justice Winston is a LT who is rated 39/71. He has the potential to be an exceptional run blocker but really doesn't seem to show the potential to ever be a good pass blocker. Runyan is older and not as good on the right, so I move Winston to the right side where he will be more likely to play sooner. He doesn't lose any skills and only minimal experience. RT Jon Runyan is rated 52/52 and he is a better pass blocker than a run blocker in this game. K David Akers is only rated 40/40 and is slightly below average in most areas. I'll likely replace him in a few years even though I like the guy. |

DE's - Definitely a position of strength.
Jevon Kearse is rated 89/89 and is a top notch pass rusher. Very good against the run as well. Darren Howard is rated 72/72. He is very good at rushing the passer and is slightly above average against the run. Trent Cole is rated 29/55. He has the potential to be a top quality pass rusher and an average run stopper, but right now he is just a decent pass rusher and a poor run stopper. Juqua Thomas is rated 29/31 and has skills to be a decent run defender but poor pass rushing abilities. Jerome McDougle has poor ratings (perhaps due to X-Factor vs his previous injuries.) He is rated 14/29. Some potential as a pass rusher. DT's - Another position of strength. Broderick Bunkley is rated 48/77. Poor run stuffing ability right now, but potential to be very good at it eventually. Potential to be a great pass rusher. Mike Patterson is rated 44/67. Also poor to fair run stopping ability but potential to be a very good run stopper down the road. Also has potential to be a very good pass rusher. Darwin Walker is rated 43/43. Poor run stopping ability, but good pass rushing ability. LaJuan Ramsey is rated 17/35. Has potential to be a decent run stopper. Sam Rayburn is rated 18/26. Has potential to be a decent pass rusher. MLB: Jeremiah Trotter is rated 78/78. Very good in every area except M2M defense where he is just average. Omar Gaither is rated 23/53. Has the potential to be a good run stopping MLB but will never be above fair in pass defense. SLB: Dhani Jones is rated 46/46. Above average run stopper, but poor coverage abilities except for bump and run. Chris Gogong - Big beneficiary of X-Factor (or maybe Head Coach had something right?) Rated 33/65. Has the potential to become very good in all areas and will get plenty of PT soon. Might even win the starting job during the pre-season. WLB: Shawn Barber is rated 38/38. Decent run stopper and decent zone coverage skills. Poor M2M coverage skills. Matt McCoy is rated 28/45. Is barely acceptable in most areas now, but has the potental to become an above average run defender as well as M2M defender. CB's: Sheldon Brown is rated 70/70. He has exceptional affinity with secondary leader Michael Lewis. Good run defender, particularly for a corner. Exception Bump and Run and zone coverage skills. Above average M2M coverage skills. Lito Sheppard is rated 46/58. Above average at zone and Bump and run, but below average in M2M. Looks like this team will be running more bump and run and zone than I usually prefer. Roderick Hood is rated 27/32, but has a strong conflict with Michael Lewis. That doesn't bode well for his future in Philly. Average at M2M and Zone coverage. Not good at much else. Joselio Hanson is rated 14/28. Not acceptable in any area right now. Has potential to be a decent Zone defender. S: Michael Lewis is young and he is the leader of our secondary. Rated 89/89. Absolutely terrific at run defense and zone coverage. Amazing hands. Excellent at every coverage scheme. He is in the last year of his deal and it won't be cheap to re-sign him. That will be priority #1. Brian Dawkins is rated 81/81. Is among the best at zone coverage. Very good at all coverage schemes. Excellent hands. Sean Considine is rated 21/40. Poor defender right now, has the potential to be good at run stopping. Quintin Mickell is rated 20/34 and mostly has potential as a run defender. Poor coverage abilities. Dirk Johnson is rated 37/49 and is below average in all areas as a kicker. Will be replaced after his contract expires this year. |

Michael Lewis signs a new 4 year deal worth just under 30 million dollars with the biggest cap hit in the last 2 years. Signing bonus of just over 9 million dollars.
Dawkins is also in the last year of his deal, and we sign him to a new 2 year 9 million dollar deal with a minimal raise this year and a cap figure of 5 million next year. There aren't any good G's available in FA at this point, so I decide to attempt to trade for a good young RG. I decide to go after a team who doesn't have much prospect of winning this year, and therefore would be more likely to want a draft pick. I target the Cleveland Browns' Cosey Coleman a 64/64 RG who is only in his 7th year. Also, he is in the last year of his deal and probably wants a fairly big deal. They are too concerned about losing a quality player and turn down my offers of a 2nd round and then a 1st round pick. They turn down a 1st and a 4th as well. Finally, I make a deal by offering my 1st this year and my 2nd round pick in the following draft. They drove a hard bargain. We immediately sign Coleman to a 4 year 20 million dollar extension with a 6.4 million dollar signing bonus. That should be the end of our trading for now. |

I'd move Justice to Guard or at least play him out of position there if you're worried about Runyan retiring.. He's a perfect fit with his slant towards run blocking. Edit: Oops, looks like you already made a big trade for a guard.
Looking forward to the dynasty. Last edited by JeffW : 10-28-2006 at 12:12 AM. |

About to go to sleep, but my plan is to have Justice starting at RT by next year if he develops like I think he will. If I can get a good T to groom in the draft next year, I'm hoping to trade Runyan while he still has some value left in him. If Jamaal Jackson and Jean-Gilles develop like I hope, we could have a very good yet young line that would hopefully stay together for at least a few years.

Inspired by Skydog's post in the main impressions thread and his noting a wide talent distribution, I thought I'd post the ratings of the top 30 QB's (based on current talent as seen by my scout.) Suddenly McNabb's 56 isn't that bad (also definitely see who the star players are..)
1. Brady 92/92 2. Peyton Manning 85/85 3. Delhomme 76/76 (thanks in large part to 100's in sense rush and 2 minute offense.) 4. Hasselback 74/74 5. Green 73/73 6. Brees 67/67 7. Palmer 66/80 8. McNabb 56/56 9. Vick 55/55 10. Bulger 49/70 11. Eli Manning 48/75 12. McNair 48/48 13. Leftwich 47/71 14. Griese 45/54 15. Roethlisberger 45/72 16. Dilfer 43/43 17. Kerry Collins 42/42 18. Plummer 42/42 19. Warner 41/41 20. Culpepper 40/40 21. Frerotte 37/37 22. Harrington 36/46 23. Favre 35/35 24. Bledsoe 33/33 25. Brad Johnson 33/33 26. Phillip Rivers 32/70 27. Brunell 30/30 28. Kitna 30/30 29. Jay Fielder 30/30 30. Aaron Rodgers 27/76 Alex Smith is a 26/66.

Accidently lost a long post when I clicked on the "view football outsiders" which was a really stupid mistake on my part.
Anyway, I released Scott Young since he was horribly rated (4/9) and had a strong conflict with Jon Runyan our OL Leader. In his place, I signed Nolan Offutt, a C from the University of Miami, who is rated 20/47 and has potential to be an above average run blocker. I also signed CB Austin Givens from Vanderbilt who immediately steps into our DB role since he is better than the guy there currently. He is rated 20/47 and has the potential to develop into an average to slightly above average all around corner. Now, it's time to set the roster for pre-season. Usually I would sit my best 7 veterans all pre-season, but now I need to watch out for rust. I'll still rest Westbrook, Runyan, Kearse, Howard, Walker, Trotter, and Brown for at least the first game. I won't worry about going over the depth chart for the pre-season too much, but I'm going to comment on depth charts and show box scores for all regular season games. |

Eaglesfan, good luck with the dynasty. Btw, are you planning to use the current draft file (assuming it works) for the upcoming draft?

We went 1-4 in the pre-season (only beating Pittsburgh) but that was in large part I think due to our minimal use of McNabb. He only played a lot in the 3rd game which we lost to Baltimore 20-13, but McNabb was 11 of 16 for 108 yards.
Jason Avant was the only serious injury in pre-season, but he should be back in a few weeks. Runyan suffered a mild injury in the last game and is questionable for week 1. I'll probably rotate Justice in some during the game. Now, it is time to get ready for the regular season. I'll take a look at our depth chart now: QB: McNabb/Garcia RB: Westbrook/Buckhalter FB: Tapeh/Schobel TE: Smith/Schobel FL: Stallworth/Lewis SE: Brown/Baskett LT: Thomas/Justice LG: Jean-Gilles/Herremanns C: Jackson/Offutt RG: Coleman/Herremanns RT: Runyan/Justice Gunners: Gocong and Mikell PR: Bloom and Givens KR: Bloom and Mahe FG and Kickoffs: Akers Punts: Johnson Snapper: Offutt Holder: Garcia LE: Kearse/Thomas LDT: Patterson/Walker RDT: Bunkley/Walker RE: Howard/Cole SLB: Jones/Gocong (However, Gocong will see the field a fair percentage of the time.) MLB: Trotter/Gaither WLB: Jones/McCoy (McCoy will get some PT too.) LCB: Brown/Givens RCB: Sheppard/Hood NCB: Hood DCB: Austin FS: Dawkins/Mikell SS: Lewis/Considine Our first game is at Houston. A few guys are rusty, (most notably Westbrook who I rested too much in the pre-season) and hopefully they can shake that off. We are 15 point favorites. I'll fine tune my defensive gameplan some and then start the season. Offensively, we are going to use a balanced offense that takes some deep shots down the field. Defensively, we will be using a blitzing attacking defense with a mixture of coverage styles.

10-0 at the end of 1. At the end of the 1st quarter, Kearse clocked Carr and knocked him out of the game. Our coaches are running it more than I thought they would with my gameplan, but it is working as Westbrook broke a 40 yard run (that was a thing of beauty in the text description) and he has been moving the chains.
Nice win. Our defense dominated except for one drive where Sage picked us apart with short passes. Winston Justice had a few nice run blocks at RT too. Here is a view of the box score: Week 1, 2006 played in Houston, TX 64 degrees, fair, calm

The player of the week was Peyton Manning. He was 26 of 40 for 245 yards with 1 TD 0 INT's.
Westbrook was the leading rusher this week. Marcus Stroud was the defensive player of the week with 8 tackles and 4 sacks. Reggie Wayne had the most catches with 8. Lavernanues Coles had the most yards (120.) Our next opponent is the Giants. Despite, running more a bit more than I wanted, I'm leaving our gameplan the same. I don't expect it to produce as many runs this week, and if it does, hopefully we'll have the same success. |

Wide open first half. We recovered one of our own fumbles and ran it in 67 yards for a TD (Greg Lewis.) They also recovered one of our fumbles and ran it in 78 yards for a TD.
McNabb's mobility is enabling him to dodge the pass rush quite a bit and then find a player for the reception. Stallworth had 2 big drops in the first half. We passed much more in the 1st half this game. Mainly cause Westbrook was stopped quite a few times on first down which Houston never did. We are up 21-20 at the end of the half. We were down 27-24 with 1:23 left and Bloom broke a few tackles to return a punt to our own 36. 2 plays later McNabb connected with Stallworth on a 43 yard pass. A quick pass to Westrbrook and another to Westbrook was followed by a 4 yard TD to Reggie Brown! They only had 31 seconds left and they couldn't drive past midfield before time expired. Looks like MVP Selection still needs to be tweaked.. Here is the boxscore: Week 2, 2006 played in Philadelphia, PA 60 degrees, fair, 7 mph wind

Brady was the player of the week: 24 of 37 for 290 yards with 3 TD's 0 INT's.
Doug Gabriel was the leading receiver of the week with 11 catches for 158 yards and 2 TD's. Will Smith, NO was the leading defender with 5 tackles and 4 sacks this week. No new significant injuries on our team. Runyan is almost recovered but Justice will get some significant PT for at least one more week. Next game is at SF where the CPU has Dilfer starting over Alex Smith. |

Awesome Dynasty.
Your pass defense is solid so far after 2 games. You don't like throwing long much so far. (3 attempts total after 2 games) What your injury setting at? |

SF has 2 big plays in the 1st half. A 101 yard kickoff return early. Then, late in the 1st half they sack McNabb force a fumble and return it 17 yards for a TD. Thanks to that, they are up 14-9 at the half.
Well, this is a frustrating loss. Found a bug (going to report it if it isn't already) in which a safety via a holding penalty was recorded in the log but was not recorded in the actual score of the game. As a result, we lose 20-18. Portis was the offensive player of the week with 30 carries for 172 yards and 2 TD's.
Manning had the best passing day: 27 of 40 for 309 yards with a TD and an INT. James Thrash had the best receiving day 6 catches for 113 yards and 2 TD's. Tully Banta-Cain (NE) was the defensive player of the week with 8 tackles and 3 sacks. In local news, Runyan is 100% now and Jason Avant is completely recovered. Avant will replace Bloom as our primary returner and 5th WR (I just can't justify having Bloom active just for KR duties since he isn't very good at it.) Justice will get less PT now. Our next game is a very winnable game hosting GB. |

While up 10-0 midway through the 2nd quarter, McNabb is hurt after scrambling and being nailed by A.J. Hawk.
Our defense was dominant, but Favre was trying to chuck it long a lot of the game. Lots of runs for Westbrook, but most of them were in the 2nd half. Garcia played very well but was bad on the deep balls he tried (this gameplan definitely produced more long ball attempts, unfortunately after McNabb was out with his injury.) 26-3 win. Very bad news. McNabb broke his arm and is out 4 to 6 weeks. It's the Jeff Garcia era here in Philly. At least he played well against GB.
I consider bringing in another QB, but all of the ones out there are horrible. I'll go with Garcia and Feeley. Marc Bulger was the offensive player of the week as he was 29 of 42 for 492 yards with 5 TD's 0 INT's in a 45-13 win over Detroit. Vick also exploded with 36 of 50 passing for 417 yards 2 TD's and 1 INT in 28-20 loss to the Cardinals. LT had 134 yards on 24 carries, but Westbrook led all rushers with 32 carries for 156 yards this week. I need to get Buckhalter a few more carries and Westbrook a few less, but I still want to run more as this gameplan seems to be doing since Garcia is in there. Torry Holt led all receivers with 9 receptions for 175 yards and 3 TD's this week. Leonard Little, Rams, was the defensive player of the week with 5 tackles and 3 sacks. Our next game is hosting Dallas. Since, most teams have played 4 weeks let's take a look at the standings so far: 2006 Standings

Your pass defense is very impressive. Its looks very strong.

Those teams are not doing well either. So that could just be the case that they just suck. I can't wait to see your team vs a great team. Would be interesting what your defense in passing does then. |

Our defense was dominant, but Favre was trying to chuck it long a lot of the game. Lots of runs for Westbrook, but most of them were in the 2nd half. Garcia played very well but was bad on the deep balls he tried (this gameplan definitely produced more long ball attempts, unfortunately after McNabb was out with his injury.) I think your looking at the wrong side. Your team only had 2 long pass attempts in the last game. |

2 Long passes is a lot for Garcia
As far as our pass defense, I'm not surprised it is dominant. In this universe, we have a terrific defensive line that are all great pass rushers and they are getting constant pressure. This includes a DE who is considered a superstar based on the FOF rating scale, another who is at a star level. We also have 2 superstar (or close to superstar) safeties and we have a very good #1 CB who is at near star level. Our #2 CB isn't bad either. The only real weakness in our passing game is along the linebacking corp, but they are good blitzers and Trotter is a good coverage guy. Edit: Also, we are running the ball very effectively and controlling the clock. Huge Time of Possession advantage in most of our games.

It's a rainy day today. I accidently deleted my semi-long post about the game by opening the box score in window. Oops. Anyway, we won 17-10 and we shut out T.O. most of the day!
Garcia did a good job with mostly short passes, but with the score 10-10 and on our own 24 with 1:20 left he connected with Stallworth on a 32 yard pass Week 5, 2006 played in Philadelphia, PA 66 degrees, rain, 10 mph wind

Bush has been working us over in the 1st half, yet we lead 3-0. Dawkins forces him to fumble on a reception when they were about to score and Dawkins recovers the fumble!
On the ensuing drive, they force Schobel to fumble inside the redzone, ruining our drive. Midway through the 3rd, with a 3-0 lead, we put together a great drive that was kept alive by Westbrook faking out a defender to take a screen pass for 9 yards on 3rd and 8. Also, LJ Smith had a 22 yard play in which he got 17 yards after the catch, and Westbrook finished it by taking a flare pass on 3rd and goal pass from the 5 into the endzone. 10-0 midway through the 3rd. Our next drive, Garcia finally connects on a long pass - 30 yards to Greg Lewis. We end up with a short FG. At the end of 3, we are up 13-0. We've shut Bush down after the 1st quarter. Our next drive, Westbrook take a screen pass for 27 yards. Akers with a 42 yard FG to make it 16-0 with 8:15 to go in the game. Garcia is running our short passing game (with the occasional bomb) brilliantly. Our defense is playing very well. The Front 7 are generating tremendous pressure on the QB and our secondary is playing outstanding. 19-0 win. Here is the box score: Week 6, 2006 played in New Orleans, LA 68 degrees, fair, calm

Had a really long post in which I previewed the TB game coming up and then a long post describing it. Unfortunately, my power went out while playing TB and I didn't save it in a text file and my laptop finally lost power. Fortunately, I saved the game just before my laptop went into hibernation.
Anyway, TB was 5-0 and Fielder is only rated 30/30, but their offensive line is playing very well, they are running it very well with both backs (Carnell Williams and Michael Pittman) having very good rushing stats. They are #2 in rushing offense and are 30th in attempts but 3rd in completion percentage with mostly short passes. They are also 5th in turnover margin and they won the turnover margin against us and beat us 23-7 thanks to forcing turnovers and not making them. Week 7, 2006 played in Tampa Bay, FL 70 degrees, rain, 15 mph wind

TB was also 4th against the run and they really stopped our running game. Next up is a game against another tough defense - Jacksonville.
Jacksonville is 30th in passing completion percentage and has a 2-4 record. Leftwich has been erratic this year as a passer, despite being rated 51/71. He has thrown 4 TD's and 5 INT's on the year. However, their defense is good, particularly their pass defense. They are only giving up 194 yards per game. They also are getting a lot of turnovers and are 4th in turnover margin at plus 5. Fred Taylor is running it very well and has 437 yards on 93 carries and 5 TD's. McNabb probably won't be back for a few more weeks still. |

Two huge passes to Reggie Brown for 28 yards and 21 yards help us score a TD at the end of the half (TD pass to Schobel) to make it 10-7, Jacksonville leads.
Early in the 4th, with our team down 17-10, Garcia fumbles it on our 18 and Stroud recovers. Turnovers are killing us and they convert with a Toefield TD to make it 24-10. Sheppard gets a big interception and we get it at midfield where Garcia hits Brown for a 30 yard TD a few plays later. 24-20. Garcia throws to Brown for the 2 point conversion. 24-21 with 2 minutes to go. We force a 3 and out and get the ball back with 1:20 to go! Unfortunately, Garcia makes some bad throws and we go 4 and out, unable to convert a 4th and 6. Game over. 24-21 loss for us, and we fall to 5-3. Next up is our bye, and I'm going Donovan might heal quickly and be ready after our bye. Week 8, 2006 played in Philadelphia, PA 39 degrees, fair, 6 mph wind

Since it is more or less mid-season after our bye week, I'm going to post a variety of mid-season stats. Also, I noticed Jacksonville really keying in on the run more which was good to see (even though it led to a loss.)

Interesting that the top QB (by QB Rtg) is rated around 30/30. However, he has a great receiver and a good receiver:

Quite a few stats to pore over
A few thoughts: Jon Runyan is doing reasonably well, but Justice has an astounding 47.5 Run block percentage. I'm going to rotate him in more like when Runyan was hurt (but not quite as much.) Both Jean-Gilles and Coleman have been disappointing in the middle so far, at least in the running game. At least Jackson, my young C isn't doing badly. Garcia has done well enough that I'm going to rest McNabb one more week since our training staff says there is a low risk of reinjury if I start him this week. |

Washington is 4-4 and this is a critical game for us.
They are riding Portis hard and using Brunell sparingly but effectively. We are going to key in on the run and hopefully stop it today. They are plus 8 in turnovers and we will have to be careful with the ball. |
