Heh, the most prolific poster on the Rockets board was heavily involved in the development of the Gizmondo, which made this list. I had to post it over there for him...

That Xybernaut Poma Wearable PC makes someone look like they've been assimilated by underdeveloped Borg.

Interesting to not see a single HD-DVD player make the list, but a Blu-Ray player did.
Does this mean Sony's Blu-Ray format lost the HDTV race and someone didn't tell me?

Guess that depends how you define worst gadgets. HD-DVD had as good or slightly better video quality at a lower price. They didn't lose because the product sucked. This one was won on politics, money changing hands between movie studio execs and force feeding to consumers. Last edited by jeff061 : 12-31-2009 at 05:42 PM. |

The N-Gage is much like many great gadget ideas imho, it was revolutionary and imho helped inspire a later gadget (the iPhone) which is seen as a classic within its field. (in a similar manner this is how I see the SEGA Dreamcast, it was that little bit too early and not quite elegant enough to achieve what the Xbox360 has) |

I never understood how that got passed through the design phase myself - it was fixed I believe in the second iteration which I think came out fairly quickly - but by that stage its reputation was built/destroyed and it was too late really ..
PS - I have to admit I've never used one, but I do think it was brave of Nokia to give it a go, doesn't mean it wasn't a flawed device - but I always have some grudging respect for devices which break new ground. Last edited by Marc Vaughan : 12-31-2009 at 08:38 PM. |

I'm still kindof mad that optical discs, with all their failings, too off in the mid 90s instead of the MiniDisc and its solid state goodness. The UMD, on the other had, was really stupid, and we're still marching down this road towards optical discs with BluRay, tho I imagine this will be the last generation in this horrible technology (finally).
The NGage is amusing. I had almost forgotten about it. Same with the Gizmondo. Hell, the PSP even has some silly failings. This should be rule #1 with your portable device: "If you can't squeeze more than 5 hours out of your battery life, go back to the drawing board and either take features out or add a better battery and accept the cost". It's why Nintendo keeps beating every GameGear and PSP that comes along. If you're stuck on a plane, in an airport, captive at a relative's house, on a road trip, wanting to watch a UMD movie (yeah, right), on your daily commute of choice like subway or bus, or any other situation you would want to use it in- maybe it's best to make sure your battery doesn't conk out after 2 hours since most of those situations last longer than that, particularly if you're lazy and didn't charge it or bring a charger. You notice that every iteration of Nintendo's stuff keeps increasing battery life, not decreasing it (i.e. GB vs GBA vs DS- not specific to inbetween generations like DS vs DSLite vs DSI). I love the book on the Sony ebook reader. The two pet ones might be the most disturbing. Along with the golf hooker one. SI
