FOF Reporter Feedback
Well, I'm on the fence about the use of the FOF Reporter. Is it more aplicable to online leagues (where I shoudl be concerned about file sizes) or is it more useful for single player games (where I can go nuts and add in as much data as I can think of and not worry about file sizes). What do you think?

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I'll chime in anyways. Ideally, there'd be two options - one "limited" export - this would get adequate information out for online leagues. Its features would be set now and changes very little in the future.
So my answer is that you should focus on just getting as much data as possible, while making it feasible for online leagues to still get some use out of the reporter.

I just wanted to add how much I appreciate your utilities and even more the technical support you back them with.

Well, if possible it would be nice to have one option for multiplayer leagues where file sizes are managable and then a second option where everything is included. Personally, I love using this utility for my single player game, but I'm also glad that our league is planning on using it as well.
If it is impossible or undesirable for you to make both options available, then I would vote for including as many features as possible for individual play as I spend a larger majority of my time on FOF2004's single player mode.

I should probably clarify this. What I meant to ask was what should I focus on now. Once I get through version 1 and it has enough features to make it a decent program, then I can focus on creating additional template sets at which time it will be possible to select one or the other.

I really don't know if you have the time or desire to make "new" items as options so that solo players can take full advantage of everything and leagues could use as much or little as they want or have space for.

I think if possible, making the files smaller would be a huge benefit.

Multiplayer leagues are going to take much, much longer to get 10+ years of history than single player leagues. I'd say focus on single-player.

Dola-
Plus, there are what, 4 multiplayer leagues? 128 people max? Compare that to the much higher numbers of peopel playing single.

Exactly, SkyDog hits the nail on the head solo players FAR out-number online league players AND I dare say all online leaguers are also solo players(great majority are anyway).

I also agree with Skydog's reasoning. I hope you focus on single player.

Where's my "multiplayer and full detail" option? I'm running a multiplayer league in the office, and diskspace / bandwidth is not a concern. Just because there are only four leagues talked about here on FOFC does not mean these are the only leagues running...

I will go with multiplayer here. The fact that there is a limited amount of multiplayer leagues around is due more to the poorer conception of the multiplayer options than the solo player options and interest in solo over multiplay. Anything that can help the multiplayer side would be a godsend to the various leagues out there. There's already some nice utilities out there for solo players right?

It makes more sense to use a utility like this as a yearly archive of league stats, not as something a league would update after each game day or sim. If it were used as a yearly archive then file size would not be a major consideration and everyone could be happy - solo and multiplayer fans. I prefer playing FOF in multiplayer mode but I don't want to see this app dumbed down (stats reduced) just so online leagues can use it for daily uploads. There's a reason football and baseball-reference.com are not updated during the current season.

Simply not doing the individual player pages makes the overall size small enough that is not a problem for me to put the output online. So I would say focus on the single player, becuase it is easy for the user to remove the extra stuff to keep the output small.
Of course that is based on a league that is in week 1 of season 1. I don't know how much bigger the files get as time passes. Last edited by Masked : 01-17-2004 at 03:51 PM. |

I thought FOF Reporter worked fine for multiplayer leagues even without central hosting of the files. I'm in a multiplayer league and I open up our league data with FOF Reporter on my own computer and browse everything there. Even if my multiplayer league hosted the output somewhere (minus individual player pages or other limitations), I would probably just ignore it and continue using FOF Reporter on my own computer where I can take advantage of everything the program has to offer. This is why I voted to focus on more data without regard to file size. Since I don't see the benefit of central hosting, I don't see the benefit of limiting what can be done to keep the file size small.
