E3 2011

Starts today!!

What games/news are you all looking forward to?

My #1 game I'm excited to see is Star Wars: The Old Republic with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception a close second.

It's also rumored that the three major consoles are going to reveal new hardware.

Looking forward to Nintendo finally revealing Project Cafe.

Also with the new handheld that Sony is rumored to unveil.

And, I'm also looking forward to Steve Jobs announcing an Apple Gaming Console at the Worldwide Developer Conference.

Rumors running rampant that Halo 4 will be officially announced later today, after Xbox.com apparently updated their webpage prematurely and referenced it.

My guess at the moment? Somebody over as Microsoft got confused & thought the remastered original was the same as "4". My son most definitely hopes I'm wrong about that however

dola

I'm looking forward to the two new system announcements.

-I want to see a new system from Nintendo that provides a jump ahead of the PS3/360. That shouldn't be too much to ask, but I'm guessing it won't happen.

-I also want to see a big leap in the new Sony handheld. I fear I will be disappointed there as well.

If the leaked photos of it are true, the dual thumbsticks looked great.

Are the Madden and NCAA Football series both produced by Tiburon?

It just driving me crazy looking at screenshots from both games. In one image Terrelle Pryor is carrying the ball and it actually looks like he has a grip on it, in the other Tom Brady is running with the ball and it just looks like its floating between his fingers.

I just don't get it.

If I understood the Dana White bit correctly, there are exclusive UFC PPV's coming to XBL. If so, damned smart marketing by both.

Way too much Kinect crap for my taste (if I want an aerobics class I'll sign up for one, I play games so that I'm entertained sitting on my ass). Still, the H4 announcement is nice, potentially huge for fans of the franchise if 343 can pull it off. Minecraft could be a big deal for fans of the game as well.

Still, the big news seems to be the addition of YouTube & exclusive PPV's
(I didn't catch all of the "TV shows on XBL" portion, not sure what that was about). It's a good presentation for the platform, a lot less so for games/gamers.

I hated the Kinect stuff. None of the games look very enjoyable and they all look like they are on rails which is a big turn off.

Halo 4 looks cool and I loved seeing the 30 seconds of Mass Effect 3 stuff.

What? you don't like fluffy little tiger cubs?
Seriously I don't see how kinect could translate into a game. Except maybe for like an exercise type of "game". I don't see a game where "every move you make" being the controls really working...I mean, gamers are couch potatoes for a reason.

Project Cafe is the big one. What the console will look like, the controller, the specs, some of the early games, etc.

But I am also looking forward to getting some more NGP info and hopefully a handful of interesting games will be announced/shown for platforms I already have.

I don't know if I give a shit about any of their games right now but the Ubisoft presentation hasn't lacked for entertainment value in its own campy way. Between the two brothers & the horrible "Shakespeare" to "Mr. Caffeine" and his infomercial style, I'm LOL'ing quite a bit here.

edit to add: Brothers In Arm: Furious Four = Inglorious Basterds: The Game ???

Not a good sign IMO that the new free online PC Ghost Recon: Online looked a lot better than the new console Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (which looked like 90% Far Cry 3 and 10% BFBC)

I'm curious about Project Café as well.

My thought is that this goes one of two ways.

1) Nintendo is jumping the cycle because their business model going forward is different enough from Sony/Microsoft that there won't be a perceived threat there, and we'll wind up with, essentially, two different console cycles.

2) Microsoft and Sony WILL perceive a threat, in which case this whole thing turns into an endless game of leapfrog with new hardware, with something new from *someone* every 2-3 years instead of the usual 5-7.

I don't think 2 will happen after the amount of money Sony and Microsoft lost the first couple years of this cycle.

Depends, you know?

I think Sony and Microsoft both would love to just milk this cycle as long as they can, and poach Nintendo's customers (Wii 'graduates') where possible.

But if the details leaked about Project Café are accurate, it's entirely possible they could be faced with competition from a new machine that both goes back to Nintendo's roots a little bit with a more traditional control schema and yet also continue what they're doing with motion gaming and the "blue ocean" philosophy.

If that happens and Nintendo are able to combine both philosophies into a single machine, I could see a situation where somebody panics. And if either Microsoft or Sony panic, it would be difficult for the other to stay the course with the machine they've got if the competition are both on new hardware.

Yeah I HATE the on stage presentations of games. It's like they are just trying to sell us so hard on how awesome their idea is. I never trust that. I like PAX for that better. They set up a cool eye-popping display, invite you in and you just play the game or demo and see for yourself.

I have to think that the Ubisoft guy was being intentionally bad, that it was basically a character he was playing rather than being meant to be a genuine legit pitch man. If I'm wrong, oh dear, then that was the prolonged UIC moment of the day and perhaps the entire E3.

edit to add: Apparently that was supposed to be their pitchman. He's apparently an L.A. based guy who is a "Television Personality, Product Pitchman, Gaming & Tech Expert, Live Events & Trade Shows" named Aaron Priceman according to a couple of blogs I've seen ranting about how bad he sucked.

That happens at E3 as well. Just everyone wants the big press conference to kick things off the day before. You'll start hearing hands-on reports soon enough.

I like how the camera zoomed out when Kobe was on offense, clearly he didn't get enough practice in with the NBA2K12 Move controls and they didn't want to show him messing up.

Apparently the PS3 has "the lead" in carrying Netflix content to TV sets, with about a 30% share of the market. But does Sony thank my wife on stage for singlehandedly pushing it out in front? NoooOOOoooo...

...seriously, she's on it ALL the time. She even streams shit we've got on DVD. I'm on a first name basis with my ISP account manager because of her.

So thanks for not recognizing her contribution, Sony. Jerks.

The controller looks like an IPad. You can play the games using the touch screen as opposed to the TV as long as the system is on.

Is this a handheld console or is this a regular console system? I am some what confused by this cause all I see is a controller not even a normal console.

It's a home console system with a controller with a screen built-in. It's not a portable console. It is dependent on the home console.

Okay. I see the benefit in sports games especially against other players who might look at your plays but the rest I guess isn't for me. When they release a virtual reality type game then I will be on board. LOL.

Now I want to see what Sony and Microsoft do.

If you mean specs, Reggie said it can do 1080p and that the controller's screen is 6.2 inches. Not much beyond that, yet.
