Electoral College Puzzle(?) Help
I am trying to do an electoral college activity. I will have 12-ish states each with a Heads (HR) and tails (TD) student. They will then flip a coin based on the number of electoral votes their state has. Then add up and find winner. Easy.
Now the issue. I then want to make it more realistic, based on 2016. My question is how do I weigh the flip count to make each state in line with the results? For example: CA with 55 votes was 62% Clinton. Should I start TD with 40 votes and have them flip for the rest? WY with its 3 votes was 67% Trump. Should I give them 2 votes and flip once? In both cases the flip results are meaningless, which is fine. So, how do I make PA, MI and OH then determine the winner? Each state do 1 flip and winner take all? Bonus: How would I do Florida and the 2000 election? |

I'm not sure what the objectives of the lesson are, so this idea may not work for you.
What about giving them a budget for flips that's 10% or so more than the total EVs? That way they would have the option of reflipping. You could have a random order of states, or place them by poll closing time so the students would have to make decisions on flips and reflips without being able to guarantee an efficient distribution. Any flips not paid for by one side automatically go to the other team. If both teams are unable to pay for a flip the EV goes to a third party.

I say you make a game out of it.
Give candidate A 659 coins. But, automatically allocate 42 of them to CA and 17 to NY. Candidate gets to place the other 599. Give candidate B 630 coins. Automatically allocate 8 to TX, 7 to KY, 7 to TN, 6 to AL, 3 to AR. Candidate gets to place the other 599.
