Fantasy/Roto Baseball Inside Info/Advice 2020

Here we go. Its that time of year. Baseball is in the air. Do you smell Spring?

I have a couple questions. Is Sam Hilliard worth $8 in a 5x5 roto league? Willl he get the playing time?

Yelich at $44? Its a 23 player roster with $260 limit. Too much for him?

I would say no on Hilliard. I like Tapia alot more plus they have Desmond burning a hole in their pocket.

Yelich is a beast, if you believe in the power numbers, then yes.

I'm in this line, especially with the Mason Saunders story this past week.

So I tend to overthink these things for some small edge that often ends up backfiring so humor me. :-)

My league is a 11-team NL only league where we have an auction followed by a minor league draft of all players not on the active roster at the time of the draft. Generally our draft is close to the start of the regular season so in the past the big name prospects (in the past Baez, Acuna, Arenado, etc) have already been relegated to the minor leagues. This year due to conflicts we draft March 14. Am I correct in thinking most of the prospects are still going to be in spring training and (according to our rules) eligible for the auction draft? If so should I just flip the #1 overall pick for like a $15 Luis Castillo or a $12 Yu Darvish? I would assume Carlson, Gore, etc will just go in the auction draft.

Didn't want to ask on my league's board as it would expose my strategy and the lack of value I think the #1 pick has. Tell me I am wrong and players actually get sent down earlier than that or any holes you see in this strategy.

We have 2 year contracts and the minor leaguers are $5 contracts.

That early draft seems to make that a viable strategy. As they are still "on" the big league roster.

I can see this starting a conversation and debate at your auction.

On a side note, in our league we are allowed to auction anyone that is on the roster or in a NL system. We are NL only as well. So those minor league players are free game.

Yeah I mean there would be some risk in bidding more than $5 on somebody like Carlson and having the Cardinals sit him in the minors for half the season but his value would obviously be next season. I kind of like your system better but our league seems to attach great value to the high picks in the minor league league draft. If I clarify now it leads to people not wanting that pick. :-)

I have Sam for $4. Is he worth $4?

I have him listed as $16 and $11 on the two cheat sheets I utilize the most. Obviously your league settings/setup/etc would effect this a little but about 20 HR's and 70 R/RBI with 10 SB's projected. The problem I have found with the Rockies (see Garrett Hampson/Brendan Rodgers) is these services tend to take any Rockies prospect and then assume Coors field makes them a superstar.

Here is an experts league NL draft I reference a lot just to see what they say. Of course these guys have the same bias and over/under bids as we would have but you would think these guys would definitely keep each other in line more than my league where a Cardinal is going for $5-10 more and the NL West $5 less.
