I just saw that Michael on Lettermen and he's was diagnosed with category 4 cancer of the throat and has started treatment. It is an interesting interview:

Just found out a former colleague of mine back at the Florida OIR passed away Monday morning of bladder cancer apparently. I feel bad I hadn't kept touch with him much since I left.

The football coach during most of my HS days is winding down his fight against stomach cancer. As one of his daughters said tonight, he's fought the good fight but cancer is winning the war.

Crusty cigar chewing guy with a crew cut, almost a stereotype of an era of HS coaches in some ways ... and yet he was never anything but fair with me in any dealing I had with him (generous & helpful even) and raised four of the most beautiful & graceful daughters anyone could have. Please keep him & his family in your thoughts & prayers as he transitions into hospice care.

Fuck cancer.

I'm currently undergoing my own cancer scare right now. I've had tests last Friday, Saturday, and yesterday and have three more days of tests ahead. This is my second scare in 8 years, guh.

Purdue Brad -- prayers for you, sorry I didn't catch your post earlier.

Also, noting the passing of Coach Don Enis a few hours ago. Head football coach at Pickens HS and Armuchee HS from 1968-1982. Rest In Peace Coach.

Fuck cancer.

Thanks everybody, it's been a rough week. I've had tests downtown for the last six week days, missed a ton of work, etc. We're hoping to get results on Monday or Tuesday but thank you all. I'm absolutely exhausted.

I hate to bump this thread but it's a good outlet.

As of yesterday morning, I was extremely fortunate to have 3 grandparents still alive despite all being over 90. I'm still fortunate to have spent able to spend a lot of time with them but that number is down to 2. It's not tragic as he lived a long and full life but it is still sad.

Sorry SI, that's rough timing. I lost an uncle to cancer 10 years ago yesterday - it certainly put a damper on Christmas that year.

Just wanted to post this here, and any prayers or well wishes will be appreciated.

My backyard neighbor was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma last year. He had an initial surgery last winter, had gamma knife surgery on tumors that were in his brain last fall, and they just found 3 more yesterday. He is going in for surgery to remove one from his bowel that is causing bacteria to leak into his blood stream.

He has 3 wonderful daughters, the oldest is 6 years old, and the youngest is 2. His wife has somehow been managing to get through this, I really don't know how she has been able to hold everything together.

Here's hoping Paul can come through and beat this, and flip the bird to cancer at the same time.

I was "lucky" as far as cancers go, in that we caught mine early and got it removed before it spread. Even so, I was a wreck for about 3-4 weeks after being diagnosed.

My family has had a good run as far as cancer goes until I was diagnosed last year, but since then I've lost a granduncle to lung cancer, and my uncle was diagnosed with a stage 1 not long ago, which should hopefully be OK.

Cancer sucks.

I figured I would bump this with an update. Paul was recently featured in a web video for the local hospital where he received his cancer treatment.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qFy_cejg2ek

While he has been told he will eventually die from it, he is currently cancer free. He has said it was surreal when I posted the above, he was hours from death due to sepsis that set in due to the tumor in his bowel. The doctors were debating whether or not to do the surgery as they were not sure if it would do anything for him.

He recovered from surgery and his cancer responded to the last round of chemo he went through.

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer this morning. Talk about a major gut-shot. I'm just trying to focus her on positive thinking right now. She worries a lot, so it's pretty difficult.

We joked about it a bit today. She's always had smaller breasts. With the surgery comes an 'upgrade' in that department, so she's excited about that.

I can't even fathom teaching two young girls how to be women without my wife, so I'm hoping that the treatment goes well.

As someone who has given you my fair share of shit on here, let me also say I truly hurt reading that. You and her are in my prayers.

On the bright side breast cancer is one of the more beatable forms, tell her to stay strong and kicks its ass.

If I can do anything to help let me know...

Some things I've learned over the first week.

-My wife is doing a double mastectomy. Just taking out all the tissue/plumbing and getting a double reconstruction. The initial part of the reconstruction actually happens at the same time. They put in 'extenders'. They're somewhat like balloons that are implanted below the chest muscle. They are pumped up slowly over a few weeks to stretch the chest muscle to the proper size to accept the implants.

-During the surgery, they have a pathologist on hand to immediately test the lymph nodes under the arm for cancer as this is the first place that cancer will move to if it spreads from the breast. If they are positive, they are also removed during the surgery.

-In my wife's case, it's possible that she may not need radiation or chemo. Radiation in her case depends on the lymph node findings. If it hasn't spread, may not need radiation. In regards to chemo, they have recent findings that indicate that a good chunk of cancer does not respond to it. They have indicators that can tell them which cancers will/won't respond. In the cases that it won't, they don't bother with the chemo.

-Full recovery time from initial surgery is around four weeks, though it sounds like she can go back to work in 2-3 weeks since she has a desk-based job.

-It's wonderful to find out how many people care about your family when something like this occurs. We've had wonderful support from everyone.

-We're going to tell our kids about it this week now that we have a plan of attack. Hopefully we'll be able to say the right things. I'm sure my wife will shed some tears when we tell them, so it'll be my job to keep focused so they don't get too scared when Mommy cries.

-My wife has a grade 2B cancer. It's considered the higher end of early stage cancer. Five year survival is around 80-85%, so we'll take those odds.

Prayers to you and your family.

My sister-in-law is coming up on a year since her breast cancer diagnosis and fingers crossed after all the treatment (she also suffered a mild stroke likely due to some of the treatment/drugs) and surgeries that the "big C" is all gone.
