The game also saw 16-seed St. Bonaventure beat top-seeded UNC, en route to the Sweet 16.

My goodness, I can't wait for Sunday.

That's a good set-up ('74 was the first year with the 32-team tourney, I think). As I recall, the formula I used put UCLA's prestige in the 90s, and their closest competition are a few programs like Marquette and UNC in the 60s. Wooden sure did have a dominant program.

There have been a lot of very interesting things as I'm running this mini-dynasty. UCLA went 2+ seasons without a loss, an undefeated UNC team losing in the first round to 16-seed East Carolina, a 15-seed Louisville team making their fourth-straight final four...

...but what interests me most, is lightning striking twice.

1956 NCAA Championship: North Carolina 78, UTEP 77 four seconds left, the Tar Heels having taken the first lead since early in the game. UTEP has to go the length of the floor. They inbound deep to Hector Daley, who tipped it to point guard Columbus Zepada. He takes the three, as the buzzer hits. It will always be debated as to whether he got it off in time, but it fell, and it counted.

1964 Final Four: North Carolina 58, UTEP 56. Eight seconds left. Miners inbound to Joshua Bly, who brings the ball up the right side of the floor. He gets by two screens, puts up a shot on the right wing...

...nothing but net.

UTEP 59, UNC 58.

The Heels have to hate seeing UTEP anywhere in their bracket.

Its tough not to right? I did a dynasty all day yesterday and wasn't so much playing as much as I was simming and making minor choices for the head coach.

Btw as a side note, I thought of you when Wyoming made the tourney. I figured you would have been going nuts. Congrats on that.

Do we have a link to britrocks setup? I was going to set up a league from the first championship, but 74 is close enough to modify.

I have a '38 mod, too. I've been sending my default leagues out by email lately. Feel free to shoot me a PM with your address.

Is there a modern 2014-2015 mod available?

How is this game compared to DDSCB, considering I've never played either?

What about online leagues?

Thank you! Much appreciated.

I've been updating the D1 universe for the last few seasons, so I have a mod that's accurate as of this season.

Haven't played DDSCB to be able to give you a comparison (though I might try the demo out).

And I know of two online leagues: fbcb-fofc.com and wwcbonline.net.

The biggest difference in my opinion is that FBCB plays much quicker. If you are detail oriented you may like DDSCB better, but the general consensus is that FBCB is the better of the two games. You can breeze through seasons while still getting immersed into the universe.

Its a very relaxed league, low time committment compared to FOF or OOTP (which could be good or bad for you depending on the level of detail and immersion you'd hope for of course)

Heh, and I run the other one. Second radii on the time commitment--apart from one stretch where you want to make 4 straight exports during the thick of recruiting, you never need to do better than 1 export/week over the rest of the season.

So I wanted to see what happened if you maximized (essentially) the ratings of a recruit. I took a two-star recruit and maxed him out. He stayed the two star recruit, and walked on to a small school in PA (I'm using the 74 mod). I'm 30-some years into this run, and all of the schools are capable of getting a solid recruit every now and again. A four-star SG came in with him.

This team (West Chester University, now of the PSAC...I'm a Bloomsburg alum, so I know WCU plenty) had only made the NCAA twice before (once coming in the season prior to their arrival, so they were on their way up). Now, with this savant, Jack Dawkins, the suddenly morphed into contenders. They reached the Final Four in his freshman year, with him taking every award imaginable. The sky seemed to be the limit.

His second season, however, the Rams, the third seed, lost that SG (Dale Nock) to an injury. They fell in the second round.

His junior year, they got to the Elite Eight as a #2 seed, only to fall.

Three years, three National Player of the Year honors, and really, nothing to show for it.

His senior year, the Rams go 26-3, and enter the postseason as the #1 seed in the West.

Round 1: 26-15-9 in an 87-73 win over Texas A&M
Round 2: 27-7-11 in an 81-73 win over Rice
Sweet 16: 24-10-8 in a 80-72 win over Oregon
Elite 8: Down by ten at the half, Dawkins was passive, with nine points, ten boards, and four assists. Wake shot the hell out of the ball (77%), a point of emphasis that they would fall back to earth. Sure enough, Wake fell down, the Rams got hot, and managed to prevent Wake to a shot on their final possession.

WCU 94, Wake 93. Jack finished with 35-10-9.

The Final Four saw the top four teams in the nation get through, all top seeds, for just the second time in league history. WCU drew Duke, who finally broke through after years of unfulfilled promise.

And the Rams blew them out of the building.

They shot 66% in the first half, compared to Duke's 30%. (I literally gasped as the game went on, and the Rams led 74-45 at one point). The final, 91-76, was in no way indicative of how the game was played. It was 49-28 at the half, and even then, it wasn't that close. Jack was 33-10-8 on 12-15 shooting, 4-4 from 3.

They would face Maryland, the current kingpin of college basketball, in the final. The Terps had reached the Final Four in 13 of the last 19 years, including the last six straight. They were an eight-point favorite to win their second title in four years.

Someone forgot to tell the Rams and Jack.

The Rams raced out to a quick 15-5 lead. The Terps stormed back, only to be turned away every single time they got to within a possession of the lead. Jack played 35 minutes (curiously, he sat with two minutes left and WCU clinging to a six-point lead, before coming back with 1:15 left; he did play all but 45 seconds of the second half). He didn't have his best shooting game (10-18), but finished with 25 points, 15 boards, and eight assists.

He finishes his career as the NCAA leader in points, assists and steals, as well as field goals and free throws made, second in rebounds, and 16th in blocks. (This is a dynasty in which players are not allowed to leave for the pros.)

It really made for an awesome story, and one I plan to turn into an actual dynasty. The Basketball Savant. I think it will be a lot of fun to write; it will push back other dynasty plans I had, but that's okay.

Okay, Saturday productivity!

I've wrapped my 3 historical mods (1938, 1974, 1982) along with the current mod (2014--called 2015 to those I've shared with previously) into the defaultleagues ZIP file attached here. Unzip this into your defaultleagues folder under the C:\Documents path and you'll have these options to choose from when you start careers in FBCB.

Notes:
1938: first NCAA tourney held in '39; prestiges all set to 0
1974: 32-team NCAA tourney first played in '75
1982: first 64-team NCAA tourney was in '85
2014: has updated tourneys.csv file, current prestige calculations, etc.
Attached Files
File Type: zip defaultleagues.zip (139.7 KB, 45 views)

Can this be done like it does in FBPB3 where you can set up automatic movements?

It can, but it basically entails last-place teams switching places with first-place teams. Not the level of conferences beginning, ending, transforming, etc. that has really changed the landscape over time.

That's actually a really good question. Just did a quick search of the FBB site and couldn't find that question either.

Winning triggers it, but how often and why I couldn't answer.

Right-click on the desktop and go to personalize. Click Display in the lower left corner. Go to Set Custom Text Size (DPI) and make sure the "Use Windows XP style DPI scaling" box is unchecked. Then try increasing the text size used by the game. Depending on the windows version you have you may be able to select 100% (96dpi), 125%(120dpi) or 150%(144dpi).

Downloaded the demo to check this out and when I try to start a game I get Run-Time Error '13'. Type mismatch.

I'm trying to run the demo on a win7 parallels partition on my macbook. Anyone been able to do this successfully?

So I found a reference to the 2.4 version giving folks these errors with the non-trial version, and the game was apparently patched a few years ago to fix that. But the demo is still on version 2.4.

What is the current version?

Brian is so good with trying to fix different types of issues that there are always some other versions out there that helps specific folks who are having issues. Those are unofficial patches.

Grey dogs site has an official patch for 2.4.5 below

Update (2.4.5) - Grey Dog Software

I've tried this patch and a previous version (2.4.2 I believe), but it doesn't appear to patch the demo version. When I fire up the demo I am still at 2.4.0 and I get the same error.

I've tried pushing the patch to the demo folder, but it doesn't work, probably by design.

Does anyone know of a list of defunct in season basketball tournaments? I had a lot of problems trying to find a list. I know of the Dixie Classic but I've recently stumbled on the MSG Holiday Festival (hard to find teams and dates in 50's).

This *might* be of service.

Yeah, already hit that one up Comey. The problem came up from trying to solve how Columbia could be part of the NJ-NY7 while also being in the Ivy Group. So I looked at their schedules and saw the Orange Bowl Tournament, then the Motor City Tournament, then another and another... but I find zero history of these tournaments when I try to find out when it started/ended.

I made a 53-54 file with a map of what happens (thru 82 I think) but the tourney thing is killing me. I thought I could add tournaments to the file but couldn't get it to work in testing. So my option is to leave them out completely or pick the tournaments I want to exist for all time.

More 74 goodness:

Penn is the second Ivy League team to reach the NCAA title game; the first was Penn, in 1953-54 (got run over by UCLA's wrecking ball, which nabbed three titles in four years, on a collective record of 133-2. No joke. The only other loss they suffered was in the 1952 Final Four, to eventual champion Dayton. Dayton handed them their loss in 1953, too). They had a great recruiting class a few seasons ago, nabbing the top recruit in the nation, Harry Lavender. They reached the NIT in his freshman year, then the Sweet Sixteen his sophomore season.

This season (1978-79), Penn got back to the pinnacle. UCLA wasn't standing in their way, but a nearly formidable opponent was.

Current kingpin, 38-1 Western Kentucky. WKU fell in the Elite Eight last year, but made it to the title game two years ago. To many, this is simply the coronation of a great champion. Their only loss was to #2 NC State, and their score disparity was a staggering +26.8 per game. WKU dispatched perennial powerhouse Kansas State, Temple, Maryland, and preseason #1 Southern Cal, to get to the title game. Penn had a magical journey, but faced a Cinderella every round. The three-seed faced 11th-seed St. Joe, then 7th-seed Morehead State. In the Elite Eight, it dispatched WKU's directional brother, Eastern Kentucky. The fifth-seed took out top-seeded NC State in the previous round.

Everyone thought the Quakers would perish against North Carolina, who was back for their second straight Final Four. But the Quakers prevailed, 97-87. That set up the final. The line was WKU by 13.5, one of the highest in history. And, for a half, that seemed destinic. Despite WKU fouling at will, they held a nine-point advantage. That happens when you play super-aggressive defense. You foul, and you get turnovers.

The Hilltoppers stretched that lead out to 15 early in the second half, but the fouls mounted up. With fourteen minutes left, the Quakers were in the bonus. Behind Lavender and some soft offensive play by the Hilltoppers, the Quakers stormed back to tie it at 51. A 19-2 run made it a 58-53 game, in favor of the Quakers. The Hilltoppers would storm back; neither team would have a lead as big as three the rest of the game. Every time the Quakers would get that cushion, the Hilltoppers would hit a three. They went 12-29 from there for the game.

However, the Quakers had intelligence, some savvy headsup play, and a lack of fouls at their side; the Hilltoppers only shot seven freebies all game, while the Quakers shot 28. Three players would eventually foul out for WKU, and two other starters would have four. But, behind sniper-off-the-bench, Ty McNew (16 points, three huge threes), the game went to overtime.

There, though, WKU fell apart, and Penn, behind a staggering 40 points by Lavender, won the title, 105-100. That is a title-game record. The stunning thing is, Penn returns nearly everyone next year, including Lavender. So does WKU. The academics bested the country boys by using their aggression against them. Will the Hilltoppers gain revenge next season?

To follow up:

WKU won the title the next season; a potential showdown with Penn was ruined when Penn fell in the Round of 32 (they would have met in the Sweet 16). The Hilltoppers rolled everyone to a 33-4 record, destroying fellow OVC rival Tennessee Tech in the title game.

Despite losing a few players over the past couple of seasons, the Hilltoppers brought their top six seniors back, including four-year star PG Arlen Coles and twin towers, Jerald Pittman and Jeffrey Lockett. Lockett lived down several costly plays in the title game two years ago to become a force by his senior year, averaging 17.3 PPG and 9.6 RPG. He and Coles would be first-team All-Americans for a Hilltoppers team that opened the year atop the polls.

Despite an opening-game loss to fellow top-seed Southern Cal, the Hilltoppers reclaimed #1 quickly, and marched through the regular season before falling at #12 Austin Peay. They lost the Ohio Valley title game to hated brother, Eastern Kentucky, 73-72 at the buzzer. Still, they were the top seed in the East Region. All was well.

That is, until they ran into the Ivy League, again.

It would not be Penn who got them, but rising power Princeton. The Tigers, who finished the regular season ranked 20th in the polls, worked through a three-game losing streak during the regular season before righting the ship. The Tigers did the same exact thing to the Hilltoppers that Penn did: Use the aggression of the Hilltoppers D against them, frustrating them into overplaying and silly mistakes on the defensive end. A close struggle throughout saw Princeton blow it open in the second half, taking a double-digit lead on the strength of fifteen 3s and 25 free throw attempts (compared to only 13 for WKU). The final score, 81-75, was not indicative of the game's flow. Princeton held this one, and gave WKU, and Coles, the same heartbreak that Penn did two years earlier.

The four-year record of these Hilltoppers is 136-13, with four Sweet Sixteens, three Elite Eights, two National Championship games, and one NCAA title. Not only are they an unlikely national powerhouse, but they have risen the prestige of the OVC into one of the most formidable conferences in the country. Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech have been to the title game in recent years, and Austin Peay has become a consistent top-15 team.

This has been a fun league to watch. One of these days, I'm actually going to do a FBCB dynasty of mine some justice.

Same. I get a run time error when creating the universe with those rosters. Too bad, would have liked to check them out.

I'd assume it's teams matching up with players exactly. He probably needs to post a league file with the player file.

Finding plenty of problems(or things I assumed I could do) matching up a 1953-54 file right now.

Has anyone tried to create HTML for a 32 team NCAA Tourney league on 2.4.5 yet? For some reason it just sits on Outputting Postseason Tourneys stage. Tried with different files and the 32 team tournament seems to be the problem but just trying to make sure it's not just my install before I uninstall it.

I am still on 2.4.1, just created a 32 team tourney and tried to create HTML, I see the same issue.

I haven't kept up with new releases since everything seems to be running smoothly, I guess I need to see what's new in 2.4.2-2.4.5!
