I cannot WAIT for this album. This sounds like an original John Lennon song from around the Revolver days.

Got me in the mood for some crazy shit, so I broke out Ihsahn's 2010 release After. This track is insane - absolutely love the saxophone!

Just finished listening to Shinedown's new album "Amaryllis".

I'm fine with bands doing what they choose to do at a moment in time, but they have to be fine with me choosing not to listen if they no longer entertain me. Quite disappointed with the new, much lighter direction they've gone here. Nickelback does the same stuff but they do it quite a bit better.

edit to add: And a Nickelback album typically several songs that actually have some energy with them. There's basically one, two if I'm generous, on this album, the rest are like the contemporary rock equivalent of listening to Air Supply.

Out today. GREAT stuff. In addition to the Beatlesque sound, some rocoking/intense stuff as well:

WARNING - A couple of F-Bombs right off the bat.

Was excited about the Golden Gods Awards being televised for the first time tonight (on XBox Live and streaming on Facebook) ... the "black carpet" has been a glorious trainwreck so far. Dee Snider, Lzzy Hale, and Jose Mangin (from Sirius Octane) beset by tech glitches, missed cues, AWKward interviews.

Actual awards start at 11p for the interested

The black carpet got better ... but even the worst bits were worth it to hear the last complete & unreleased track from Pantera Piss.

Yeah, I agree with Vinnie Paul, it could have fit on Vulgar Display of Power quite nicely.

Trivium did a smoking cover of Creeping Death f. Corey Taylor on vocals and Robb Flynn on guitar. A surprise that was worthy of last year's high standards. Looking forward to seeing that clip show up on YouTube.

Dee Snider w/ Black Veil Brides wasn't bad, I'm just not completely sold on BVB (and as they said moments ago "we don't really give a fuck what you think"). At their best they do deserve the bit of mascara torch passing that took place with that performance, I just don't believe they're consistent enough for that yet. Maybe, just maybe, someday.

That bit of credit given, handing their two guitarists the Guitarist of the Year award earlier in the night was an insulting fucking joke. I can't think they're even among the top 20-30, much less the best.

Okay, that was one of the biggest WTF moments I think I've ever seen on my television.

On guitar for Marilyn Manson tonight ... Johnny Depp.

Manson was awful btw. He looks arguably older than Alice Cooper, the bit with Taylor Momsen was (perhaps intentionally) just creepy, and he sounded fairly fucked up for most of the performance. Dude, you're headlining, lay off the absinthe, it's still early in L.A. you've got plenty of time to drink.

Not usually my kind of music, but The Weeknd caught my attention recently and a few of the songs have such a dark/dirty/moody feel that I am really digging:

I've been pretty disappointed with anything Manson has done since Holy Wood. Golden Age was all right.

As for Johnny Depp, he is credited as the slide guitarist on Fade In-Out on Oasis' third album, Be Here Now. The story is that Noel was too coked out of his mind during the study sessions to play the part, so Depp did it.

Project Cinco party 2012 - Project 9-6-1

I may be getting too old for all day shows with temps near 90 and t-storms likely ... but I'm not too old for
‎9:30 Shinedown
8:00 Five Finger Death Punch
7:30 The Beatoffs (idiiot morning DJ's "band")
6:30 Chevelle
5:30 Hellyeah
4:30 Volbeat
3:45 Adelita's Way
3:00 Art of Dying

My expectations? Eagerly awaiting Volbeat. Hellyeah will rock the damned universe again (almost shockingly good live when we saw them a cpl years ago). 5FDP I'm almost uneasy about, the potential to be bad live seems to be there. Shinedown has me worried, I simply don't like the new album & it's heavily featured in their set list, but I'm hoping that the high points will make up for the lulls. Sound of Madness is, after all, a personal theme song.
Chevelle will likely once again prove to me that I'm really just not that into them.

The others I'm just unsure what to expect.

AGAINST ME! frontman Tom Gabel told rollingstone he is a transgender and will begin the necessary steps in becoming a woman.

Recently played this song on tour, kind of crazy

TOM GABEL
TRANSGENDER DYSPHORIA BLUES

I say good for him, if that is what will make him happy. Personally (read: selfishly), I'm sad because Against Me! is one of my favorite bands, and his voice is so unique and I will miss them.

Here's the lyrics for anyone curious:

Decided to take a crack at this (since YouTube has been randomly scrambling the order on my playlists lately), not sure whether I'll be able to maintain it or not but time will tell.

40 tracks, all current Active/Hard rock songs. Obviously limited to what's available on Spotify (for my first crack at this there were 7 songs that would have been included that were not on Spotify yet)

And, by way of explanation, this is based significantly but not entirely around the latest Active Rock/Rock charts in both the U.S. and Canada, as well as very occasional entries from the Alternative chart. Basically it's the Top 40 from those, minus the suck

For those who follow the genre closely there won't be much here that you haven't heard. Those who follow occasionally (or are just feeling adventurous) might find some things they like that they hadn't come across yet.

My Spotify Top 40 by Jon Loveless on Spotify

edit to add: The 7 missing songs, just for the heck of it ...
Days Gone By - The Offspring
Soldiers - Otherwise
Unspoken - Red Line Chemistry
Let the Sparks Fly - Thousand Foot Krutch
Stone Faith - Colin James
Last Thing - Tupelo Honey
Analog Man - Joe Walsh

New live Godsmack Live & Inspired sounds pretty beastly on my first listen through on Spotify.

Radio is loving their cover of Rocky Mountain Way but the other three covers are also awfully interesting (or two of them are at least): Come Together, Time (Pink Floyd), and Nothing Else Matters.

The new Japandroids is really, really good. Also enjoying these releases from 2012:

Arliss Nancy - Simple Machines
Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls
Cheap Girls - Giant Orange
Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires - there is a Bomb in Gilead

A release from 2011 that I wish I found sooner is John Moreland & The Dust Bowl Souls - Everything the Hard Way.

The middle to back-half of the year looks pretty strong if you're an indie fan. The Walkmen, Japandroids, Edward Sharpe, Passion Pit, Yeasayer, Dirty Projectors, Sigur Ros, Animal Collective, Beach House, Liars, Hot Chip, Metric, and The Gaslight Anthem.

And these are only the known bands I can think of off the top of my head. Thank God for Spotify, although I'll probably completely forget these bands came out with new albums after like a week, since I'll be completely overwhelmed.

Is it just me, or do you find yourself not following up as much on albums now that you have millions of them at your fingertips?

I think it's more age and too much other stuff to do, but I used to keep up with all that kind of stuff for quite a few artists, and now I just go find stuff when I can - sometimes months after a release since I've simply forgotten about it. There are certain artists I am waiting on a release from, but most - even if I'm interested in hearing it - I simply forget until the next time I decide to sit down and try to find something new to listen to.

I'm probably the exception but Spotify actually makes it more likely that I'll eventually hear the full album, and usually within 1-3 weeks of release.
