re: Ubaldo. Interestingly his numbers were worse after the deal to Cleveland than before. So maybe there was some arm issues there and not necessarily that he was phoning it in.

Sadly, very well could mean good-bye Phillips. (I would rather have Votto)

Jesus, a Votto extension would be huge for the franchise. Maybe all the boxes of "Vottos" cereal has been flying off the shelves here locally, and revenue is streaming in.

Wait, so why does Votto's extension affect Chapman being in the pen or in the rotation?

Word on the street is that Votto is getting paid, but will still spend the winter shoveling driveways.

Ah got it.

Well, that's bad news for me counting on Chapman being in the rotation for my fantasy team.

I've decided I'm going to fast on Thursday in anticipation of tackling the Champion Hot Dog (minus cheese) on Opening Day Friday. I'll try to do live updates, ala the Krispy Kreme burger thread.

Should be interesting. When Gabby hit a HR yesterday everyone was looking at the "thing" waiting for something to happen.

Yea, to me it really makes no sense. He has done very well this spring. Bailey has been inconsistent, getting shelled at times. Bronson is Bronson. Not sure whether we will get a decent version or just shit. But Bronson makes too much money to not be in the rotation, also.

But I do see where you were confused. The "..because..." makes it seem that the following is the reason why. I was trying to imply that I can't find a reason.

There is part of me that thinks it might be a good move. The pen is in shambles a bit right now. Have him pitch from there for now, when the pen gets balanced back out, he takes a rotation spot to be there the second half. Arroyo or Bailey gets to the pen. (or in Bailey's case hopefully traded)

Bronson will have to be absolute, pure, unequivocal shit to get put in the bullpen. I feel like over the past couple years I've heard a few times Dusty make comments essentially saying that Bronson gets paid starter money so he starts. Or some bullshit like that.

Money = playing time/position, not performance.

I have no evidence to back this up, but I wonder what effect going from starting, bullpen, to starting again has on a pitcher. Chapman isn't getting any consistency in what the team wants from him.

I agree with that part but on the flip side, people used to manage staffs in a way that guys would get pen innings, starting innings, etc. and readily change between both. It can be done but the jerking around is definitely bad.

I don't understand the Bronson makes starter money thing. The logic that they pay him big money so he might as well earn that money by being horrible, is just stupid.

Votto is now signed until he is 41. Tough spot for the Reds. Considering that Pujols signed until the age of 42 and Prince Fielder signed until the age 36, the Reds probably thought that they had no choice to keep him unless they signed him for 10 years.

Yea. I am unsure how to feel. I've never been a big fan of these long contracts. Especially for a team that isn't a big spender. There are just so many question marks now in regards to the future in regards to team spending. What will the last 5 years of this contract do for the organization?

On the other hand, though, I am elated. I, as pretty much all Reds fans, absolutely love Joey Votto. Barring a trade (but who will take on this contract), he will be a Red for life. That doesn't happen anymore.

I'll just hang on for the ride and hope it turns out alright. What more can you do.

It also sends a signals to the other players on the team and future potential free agents - the Reds are willing to spend some money to win.

My understanding is this contract has a no trade clause.

I am sure they probably could. With the no trade clause, contract, and age it would probably be very difficult to move him. The Rangers traded A-Rod after 3 years of his 10 year contract, but he was 28 when he was traded. Votto's 10 year contact doesn't even begin until he is 30. I doubt that someone will take the balance of his contract if they try to trade him 3 years into the contract, when he will be 33, unless he is putting up Barry Bonds' type numbers.

Not just that but is Texas even finished paying on ARod's contract? Yeah, they jettisoned some of it, but they still had to pay $67M for him to /not/ play for them

I'm pretty sure when Arod opted out and signed with the Yankees, that those provisions were voided.

I'm already getting sick of reading that today is opening day. It is NOT opening day. One night game does not constitute opening day. Nor does a couple of games a billion light years away a week earlier, either. If I can't sit around on an afternoon and flip between 3 or 4 games at a time, it's not officially opening day.

Contract, yes. Players, no way. Helton's inflated numbers are a product of the park. Votto, despite playing in a batters haven, has better career numbers on the road.

Not sure it was mentioned, but Andrew Bailey looks to be sidelined for 3-4 months due to a thumb injury/surgery.

On a related note, I REALLY hope Markus surprises us and releases OOTP13 a day earlier than expected. I didn't buy OOTP12 but am itching to get back into OOTP (although I did enjoy iOOTP for what it was last year) and would love to be able to mess around with the game on the first full day of the season tomorrow.

Yeah I know. But other than the Friday/Monday advance/regular release thing, I don't know why you wouldn't move it up to the real opening day. I can definitely wait 24 hours, I'd just like to be surprised.

Carlos Beltran with the first hit on American soil in the 2012 baseball season.

For those who have it available, thanks to the weird schedule, MLB On Demands free preview will run from tomorrow till next Sunday.

Just getting caught up on the game. Whoever thought bringing Ali out was a good idea is an idiot. For what is supposed to be a celebration I was instantly bummed out. Ali is looking much worse than I recall.

I was thinking that the image if Ali tonight just replaced Dick Clark on NYE as saddest/most uncomfortable celebrity-in-decline moment ever.
