This is NOT an example of SABR influence on baseball. In fact, it's just the opposite. One of the basic tenets of analyzing stats is sample size. Most (nearly all) SABR-inclined guys will tell you it's nuts to pinch hit a .750 OPS player with a .600 OPS guy just because the former is 1-12 in his career against a particular pitcher and the latter is 3-7. They don't even know or understand what they are objecting to. They should hire Joe Morgan away from the Reds as a consultant.

I agree with sample size, but even his example has him playing a guy that could have been 4-16 with seven strikeouts.

Inside the Phillies: Who needs sabermetrics?

I love the example of a guy going 1 for 16 against a pitcher as "sabremetrics". It's also interesting that they point out their general disdain for sabremetrics as almost charming. In reality, it's on par with, "I have a lot of data here that I can use to make a decision, but I'm choosing to use only 50% of that data."

I know it's only Spring training, but this is why Ludwick is dangerous in Dusty's hands. Tomorrow's lineup:

Brandon Phillips
Zack Cozart
Joey Votto
Ryan Ludwick
Jay Bruce
Scott Rolen
Drew Stubbs
Devin Mesoraco

Would anyone be surprised if Dusty ran this out for 100+ games?

I liked the part at the end of the article when he talks about the A's success was mostly because of having 3 of the best pitchers in baseball. Most would probably claim the same about the Phillies and many might also claim the Phillies vastly underachived hitting wise last year.

Whether these old managers want to use it or not is up to them but not understanding it is simply inexcusable IMO. It is part of their craft.

EEK!

Understandable not wanting to have Votto/Bruce B2B but Ludwick shouldnt even be in a big league lineup.

No comments yet on the new playoff format?

Also, looks like inter-league play year round starting in 2013 with the Astros move to the AL. I wonder how long it will be until the DH is implemented in the NL (please dear god no.)

Even though I agree with Dusty on it obviously being dumb to question his lineups already you can tell this is going to be a fun season.

He's going to blow a gasket by seasons end. Seems to be getting fed up with the lineup questioning, but you know that shit won't stop cause, well, Dusty lineups are the best lineups...

Braves lose to the Tigers, avoid being no-hit thanks to lead off the 8th. Made that stand pat thing look great.

The conclusions were pretty sharply drawn last year.

That said, my comment was very much tongue in cheek.

DH will be implemented league wide and what they need to do is just eliminate the divisions. This one game playoff to get into the playoffs is a joke. A 95 win team from a tough division will have to face off against an 83 win team from a joke division just to get into the playoffs?

Here's the solution - Eliminate the divisions. We have 2 leagues, top 4 automatically get into the playoffs. Reduce the regular season to 154 games. Extend the division series to 7 games. Much better and fairer. Why should the better team in the regular season have to play in a one game playoff against a lesser team just to get into the playoffs? The better team has already proved it is superior over a bigger sample size. It's a silly idea to drum up more money.

I don't even think you have to shorten the season. Are you wanting to shorten the season to prevent the playoffs from going even further into November? If so, I'd rather they just reduce the number of off days during the playoffs. Make it so you need more then two pitchers to succeed.

Is anyone else finding that watching MLB.tv games with Nexdef is a stuttery mess?

Even on the lowest quality the video is stopping every 5 seconds or so, and the quality seems to be changing regularly.

I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with my internet connection as I am having no problems maxing out the video settings when I don't use the nexdef plugin.

Outside the DVR controls, is there any advantage to using nexdef?

Sounds like (nothing definite) Zack Greinke is going to hire himself in agent in order to work out an extension with the Brewers. I kind of surmised things would things could go that way with the Brewers having him do some scouting work and having him potentially sitting in on draft meetings.

Hopefully his arm doesn't fall off... and he avoids pickup basketball games.

Dropkick Murphy's bassist and lead singer Ken Casey is traveling to Clearwater, Fla., to meet with his pal and new Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. And he's going there with a message.

"He can't use 'Shipping Up To Boston,'" Casey said. "That's a Boston song. One of the Philadelphia radio guys suggested 'Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya.'"

"And I have to get with the new Sox closer [Andrew Bailey] to let him know he can use 'Shipping Up To Boston,'" Casey adds. "That's not Pap's song. That's the closer's song."

A lateral meniscus tear is tough for a catcher to come back from 100%. All of that squatting puts a ton of stress on the knees.

Woot! I've never been before but this year I'll be going to a legit Opening Day (first game for a team)!

Rockies @ Astros on April 6th

We got 2 tickets for only $18 total (including Ticketmaster's patented "screw you" fees). This is odd to me as the Royals, bad as they have always been since I've lived there, always sold out and always $50+ for seats. The second game of the season would be back to $5 tickets and crowds of 15K but Opening Day, no matter how bad the team was expected to be, it was a day with hope and a 0-0 record. So it's odd to see an easily had ticket for Opening Day.
