Lucasfilm sold to Disney(Star Wars Episode 7!)

Grab the vaseline prequel haters, you're about to get raped again...

Quote:
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansit.../news/?a=69442

ontinuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas. Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.

"Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas," said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. "This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value."

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and "evergreen" Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney's global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

I'm not a prequel hater, so I'm really happy. This is not some made up shit, right?

It's 2PM somewhere.

So you'll be a Disney employee now? That's cool right?

If they use any of the things they have learned from the Marvel universe, these movies have very little chance of sucking. I'd imagine they can use real directors and the storytelling options are basically limitless. Especially since George will probably kick off sooner, rather than later.

True, it is 2PM somewhere.

I'm assuming we will be, but, don't know for sure. I actually don't know how to take this. I'm worried about being redundant because Disney has their Imagineers, which seems like the same thing that we do in R&D here at ILM.

We have a meeting at 4PM in some big warehouse in Richmond, so, maybe they will nuke us there and cull the payroll all at once.

I can't wait til more details come out. Basically I pray that they get 3-4 different storylines going, perhaps sampling some of the old republic type stuff and then tackling some of the tertiary stuff like boba fett, etc. I pray it's not going to just be a movie every 5 years or so, or some sort of trilogy continuation exclusively.

No way man, if you read the extended universe novels (WHICH LUCAS AGREES ARE CANNON) then you'd know that he uses explosives to kill the sarlac and is total able to escape. Unless you want to tell me which scene you actually see him die in.

I predict child jedi school with Han and Leia's kids in a Harry Potter-type role.

Mostly it would mean that the first male character you meet will be incredibly obnoxious and bland.

I've know but since, you know, it's not in the original movies I just want people to hear themselves saying absurd things like that over and over so maybe they'd reconsider

I should rephrase. I hope that they are actually considering making multiple different movies based in the Star Wars universe simultaneously

Can't argue with that. Nothing makes me stop listening to someone quicker than offering some explanation of, "You really need to read the books from the extended universe," about a movie, game or TV show.

Sure, go ahead and tell me why Kai Lang wasn't an awful character because of something that was in the shitty Mass Effect books.

LOL. THis isn't an MMO. THey rocked the house on Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2. Even the stories of the various classes in TOR were good. Much better than anything Lucas could do. THey are good at making a story. And dialogue even.

Granted the best SW has seen is when they hired a legitimate dramatic screenwriter like Lawrence Kasdan and legit director like Irwin Kirschner.
But those 1st two games matched the power of Empire.

KOTOR 2, the one typically considered to have better writing of the two, was done by Obsidian.

I don't predict trilogy. I predict star wars to the end of time. Theatres will forever reserve one huge screen just for star wars.

And has terrible as most of us think the prequels were, they did succeed in creating a whole new generation of star wars consumers. Maybe they're not quite as rabid, because there's so many other entertainment options now, but the easiest thing for parents to do is buy their kids the new star wars toy or movie.

I would love to see some Old Republic story lines. Maybe not exactly what KOTOR (though I really like the games) story line is though.
