this happens before the prequels it's nerd armagedon. now it's a relief. i would anticipate disney rolling out top shelf talent across the board. give the geeks what they want. it's too big an investment.

hope jk's job is safe

So, I'm sure that someone will probably provide some more intense analysis over the next several days, but this transaction will have to go down as one of the largest transfers of iconic property in our lifetime. Perhaps something to the effect that has very little parallel to anything before seen?

And the whole amazing thing is that apparently Lucas is the only shareholder of Lucasfilms, and that Disney was the only allowed bidder. It's as if he was sending his kids to college and knew that there was only one place in the world that he felt comfortable with.

Episode 7? Already, we see how Lucas is not involved... if he was, they would announce Episode 10. Then we would get 11 & 12 before 7, 8 & 9 come out.

This is what I was wading through all of the comments to eventually post. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll just pretend the last thee films didn't even happen.

What about the rights to the Beatles' catalog?

Not minimizing this at all, but that's pretty damn big too in terms of iconic properties (even if not in $-value, not sure what it would be in today's dollars though).

It would give fans new characters to get to know and leave fans wanting more. If they just create a true sequel to Return of the Jedi I have a feeling a lot of fans are going to be disappointed because a.) Many fans would disappointed on how they handle any characters they already know and b.) They'd be more constrained with story lines.

I'd also like to see them go for a PG-13 rating then a PG rating.

I would love to see some pre...prequel movies that don't involve the Skywalker family too. It's a huge universe that has (so far) really only revolved around Luke and Anakin. 4 or 5 hundred years before Episode 1, we could see a younger Yoda kicking ass across the galaxy.

I'm a bit reserved right now on how they are going to handle 7, 8, & 9. Maybe use 7 to pass the torch from the OG characters to a new generation of characters? I don't know. If I could only figure out the password to George's computer that has all of his notes...

I would hope they spare no expense on the director and writers for these. It's too huge of a cash cow for them to screw it up.

I hope my job is safe too.
I think one thing that is keeping me safe (right now) is, the project that I'm working on, is a personal project of George's. So, the ax usually bypasses those projects until he gets fed up or no longer has a use for it. Right now, it's getting a lot of use, but, we shall see.

I really didn't think Lucas would ever do this. I think all the fan films, etc show there's a ton of potential in opening up this universe. Very exciting.

Try "StarWars"

Just "StarWars"

No additional crap.

Just a stand alone thing.

It's something nobody would ever consider he would think of.

I thought about the Beatles Catalog as a parallel, but it's not as if someone could continue to make "beatles songs" into the next century.

Very interesting timing for this announcement given the fact that Universal Studios has an announcement planned for today regarding their parks. Total coincidence I'm sure

The future films and unlimited merchandising options were a big reason for this acquisition but I can't help but think it could mean big things for the Disney Parks too.

That's what it's sounding like. Word is, we won't know 100% for sure until at least January when the sell is supposed to be finalized.

i'm on board with this:

Disney may be eyeing Toy Story 3 writer to pen Star Wars: Episode VII, so get ready for space tears?

very interesting:
Quote:
Arndt stated that if a writer could resolve the story's arcs (internal, external, philosophical) immediately after the Moment of Despair at the climax, he or she would deliver the Insanely Great Ending and put the audience in a euphoric state. The faster it could happen, the better. By [Arndt’s] reckoning, George Lucas hit those three marks at the climax of Star Wars within a space of 22 seconds.

i personally wouldn't be interested in a traditional cg star wars (isn't there already a cartoon show like that?) but a quasi-realistic version like avatar might be interesting. then they could use the original actors voices (with some modulation. carrie fisher sounds like she's 80)
