#3 Florida (11-1)(-3) vs #18 Indiana (10-2) on TV4.

We change the offensive game plan to feature more passes to avoid running on the Gators' defensive line. We receive the opening kickoff, and Vallery sets the tone early with a 20-yarder to TE Jeffries. Then he connects with Kaplan for 21 yds, UF is called for interference, and Jeffries takes another pass for 19 yds, and we're at their 14-yd line. We have them right where we want them, and Vallery drops back for the score as he throws it... into the hands of defender Spence, who kneels for a touchback! Darn! Florida QB Thornton drops back on his first play, looks downfield... and is sacked by DT Cabrera, for a loss of 7 yards!

UF counter with a running play, and Fleming hits a hole at full speed and scampers 50 yds before being brought down by Crane. Thornton hit Wentz for 10 and then hands off to Fleming, who goes right up the middle... and is stuffed by Dorrough, who forces a fumble, which Brignac recover at our 27! Wo-hoo! Vallery hits Blades for 11, Wittich for 10, Blades for 18 but then we are stopped as two running plays fail and we have a 4th down on their 32. We go for the conversion, and Wittich catches a pass in the flat and queezes through for a first down.

The next series, we gain only three yds on a Wittich run and have a 4th and 7 on the 20. Our kicker steps in and nails it for three and 3-0, Indiana, at 4:30 in the first quarter. The Gators are called for roughness on their next drive, and Thornton scrambles for a first down, but fumbles as Dorrough hit him! That's the second fumble our strong safety has caused today! Cabrera recovers on the UF 26-yd line. Again we only get a 5-yd run by Wittich and settle for a 38-yd FG by Cash. 6-0, Indiana! Florida punt and we start on a new offensive drive as the second quarter begins.

Vallery throw passes of 9 yds to both Bell and Bertram to move past midfield, but is halted at the 40, facing a 4th and 6. We turn the ball over on downs as they aren't fooled by the trick play to Wittich. Instead we yield a 19-yd gain on a Thornton pass to Clinton, and the Gator QB airs it out on the next play, and the pass is picked off on our 31 by Banks! Vallery gets sacked on the drive and we can only punt to their 37. We hold them to a 4th and 12 at midfield and field the punt on our 11. Vallery goes to Blades for 17, and then Kaplan for 6, but in the end, we punt to their 19th.

This time does the Gators move the ball on us, but are halted on a 4th and 4 on our 30. They convert, only to get a 4th and 17 on the 27 later, thanks to a Cox sack on Thornton. Their kicker succeeds with a 44-yarder to close the deficit to 6-3, Indiana, with 28 seconds left in the first half. At halftime, we have 13 first downs and 190 passing yds, but zero rushing yds. Florida has 10 first downs, 95 rushing yds and 89 passing yds.

The Gators start the second half with good play on offense, but are called for offensive pass interference and gets stuck on a 4th and 24 stand at midfield. We go for three downs and a punt once again as Vallery rarely get enough time to pass accurately enough - he's hurried almost every time. A holding penalty on us put us in a bad position, and then Thornton guns the ball to the intended receiver - and ILB Whalen makes a superb read and snatches the ball!

He's going!

He's going!

He's going 59 yds for the touchdown! 13-3, Indiana, at 9:47 in the 3rd quarter! UF try to pull themselves together and start to run the ball strongly, but Thornton's passing looks very unsteady at the moment, and when the ball clearly is off target Sonnier is there and makes another interception. First down, IU, at the Gators' 44. Vallery finds Wittich for 7 but get two passes blocked and then we turn it over on downs at their 41-yd line. Baker sacks Thornton to force a Florida punt and we down it on our 11.

After getting another pass blocked is Vallery sacked for a loss of 10 yds, which eventually gives us a 4th and 20 o0n our own 1-yd line. P Floyd boots it 41 yds, very good considering the circumstances. Thornton finds Clinton for 35 yds, and then Peterson run in from the 7-yd line for a score and 13-10, Indiana, at 1:01 in the third quarter. With that fresh in mind, Vallery steps onto the field and leads the team to a 11-play, 72-yd drive and hits Bertram for a 2-yd TD pass and 20-10, Indiana! What a drive! It's the fourth quarter, and there's only 10:29 left to play...

Cash kicks off, and Florida's Chrisman returns the ball, Husted tackles on the 22 - and the ball pops loose! It's a mad hunt for the pigskin as it bounces around the field. After spending five minutes unravelling the pile the referees conclude that Indiana defensive back Kratky is in possession of the ball! First down, IU, at the Florida 22! After two incomplete passes, we gain 7 yds on a Wittich run. 4th and 3 on the 15. Cash kicks the ball through the uprights for three points and we're up 23-10 with 9:32 left.

We hold UF from getting a first down and get the ball back as the punt goes into the end zone for a touchback. Wittich run for 10, -2 and -3 which takes about three minutes off the clock before a defender bats away a Vallery pass to Blades. 4th and 15 on our 25. The Gators start on their 36-yd line with a holding penalty. 1st and 20 on their 26. Horoszowski hurries Thornton for an incomplete pass. On second down, we send OLB Baker on a blitz, which is perfectly timed as he smacks into the Florida QB from behind as he prepares to pass, jarring the ball loose. DE Cox jumps onto the ball and gets us another turnover on their 21-yd line!

5:52 left of the game, and Vallery hits Wittich for 8 yds. The next pass is good as well, right into the sure hands of giant TE Jeffries for 9 yds to the 4-yd line. The first pass to Bertram is incomplete, and the second pass is thrown to Wittich in the flat. He jukes a defender, squares his shoulders and puts the head down, securing the ball as he powers over the goal line. Touchdown, Indiana! 30-10, IU, with 4:12 left to play! Now Florida enters their hurry-up offensive mode, going no-huddle and Thornton goes five plays before completing a 42-yd TD pass to Clinton! 30-17, IU, with 2:24 left.

Florida attempts an onside kick after that, but our man Gordon recovers the ball on their 47-yd line. Vallery gets sacked and throws two incomplete passes, wasting a timeout for UF. The punt is terrific, going out of bounds at the Florida 9-yd line. 1:40 left to play. DT Joseph blocks the Thornton pass on first down. The second pass falls incomplete as Banks bats it away from the intended receiver. Then they get a first down as we are called for pass interference. 1:24 left to play, the ball is on their 24. Whalen blitzes, and combines with Cox to sack Thornton for a loss of 5 yds. Then Sonnier defends the pass on second down. 3rd and 15 on their 19-yd line, 1:02 left.

UF WR Clinton catches a pass for 18 yds and a first down, 40 seconds left. Horoszowski hurries Thornton and the next pass is incomplete. 31 seconds left, the Hoosier bench is starting to chant "De-fense, de-fense"... and Thornton proceeds to shut them up as he hits Clinton for a 63-yd TD pass! 30-24, Indiana, with 20 seconds to go...

Again UF attempt an onside kick. All our best pass receivers are on the field. The kick bounces... and Wittich recovers it! First down, IU, at the UF 46 with 13 seconds to go! Vallery kneels once to end the game, and we're through to the quarterfinals!

Great call switching to the pass offense. Probably need to stay with that for the rest of the playoffs.

That game was insane - what did we get? 6 turnovers? Looked like we needed every one of them to weather the FOF 4th Quarter Comeback Algorithm (Patent Pending).

UF had four fumbles, and lost them all, mix that with our three interceptions and you have a recipe for disaster in Florida...

It was raining and 54 degrees, though, meaning the "slippery ball" variable factored in heavily.

On the other hand, it's no accident that IU leads the nation in turnover margin with +28 (2nd in takeaways with 36).

#5 Vanderbilt (11-2) vs #18 Indiana (11-2)(-5) on TV3.

Again we get to play in rainy weather, and Vandy begins with the ball. They drive 78 yds to score on a 9-yd TD pass on the opening drive, on which they had a 36-yd completion. 0-7, Vanderbilt. We get to their 13-yd line on our first drive but turn the ball over on downs. This time we stop the Commodores from getting a first down. We remain seven points down for the rest of the first quarter and get a prime opportunity to tie when we get to the Vandy 4-yd line in the middle of the second quarter. Vallery passes to Wittich who's stopped for no gain and fumbles away the ball to the defense.

At halftime we have 7 first downs, 26 rushing yds and 93 passing yds, while Vanderbilt has 9 first downs, 33 rushing yds and 115 passing yds. Midway through the third quarter we get our first turnover as Buff fumbles the ball on a reverse and Brignac recovers on their 48. We use that to full advantage as Vallery hits Bertram for a 28-yd TD pass! 7-7 all at 5:01 in the 3rd. Vandy score a FG on the very next drive, however, to regain the lead with 7-10 at 0:12 left in the third quarter.

We start the fourth quarter with a drive where we get a break through a pass interference call on Vandy which moves us past midfield. Wittich get a key block from left tackle Les Carter and runs 35 yds for a touchdown! 14-10, Indiana, at 9:27 in the 4th. Schultz answer with a 34-yd completion, and then we're called for spearing, which puts the Coms at our 35. They get down to our 4-yd line, where Schultz hit Sherman for a TD, and 14-17, Vandy. Three minutes left of the game.

Vallery finds Bertram for 30 yds, but gets a 4th and 11 at midfield with 1:32 left. The fourth-down conversion attempt is intercepted and Vandy has the ball on their 40. We have all our timeouts left. They are held to no gain for the consecutive plays, which killed our timeouts, but we have 57 seconds to go. Wittich return the punt 11 yds to our 26. Vallery throws three incompletions and we have a 4th and 10 on our 26 with 29 seconds remaining. Blades get the pass, but DROPS it!!! Oh no! Season over.

Hmm. Well, it was obvious that this team would go exactly as far as Vallery could carry them. We got a game in which he did not deliver a championship performance and that's it.

Great season, 3ric!

Week 19, playoff semifinals

Results:
Vanderbilt 31, Army 24.
Wisconsin 37, Tulane 25.

------

Week 20, playoff final

Wisconsin stifles Vandy's running offense totally to take a 10-point lead, 20-10, at halftime. The Badgers play a balanced offense and adds a touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter to lead by 17. The Commodores pass their way to a TD with 3:38 left, and creeps within three points with another scoring pass just inside the two-minute warning. It isn't enough, however, and Wisconsin takes the national championship with a 27-24 win.

Player of the year:
QB Quinn Schultz, Vanderbilt.

  • QB Gaines started six games, all in his last season. He passed for 1440 yds, 14 TDs and just 3 interceptions for a 161.8 rating.
  • RB Matt Rison was a valuable special teams player, with 22 tackles. He also ran 18 times for 40 yds.
  • TE DeLay started 18 games with 44 catches for 744 yds and 5 TDs.
  • WR Blades had 26 starts and 69 catches for 1225 yds, 13 TDs. He also had 2 TDs as a kick returner.
  • G Huang started 35 games and had 60 key run blocks for a 28.5 block percentage and 15 sacks allowed.
  • T Carter started 52 games, but wasn't very successful with only 53 key run blocks and 54 sacks allowed...(!)
  • DE Farmer started only 6 games, a testament to our depth at end. He had 37 tackles, 14 assists, 4.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and 11 QB hurries.
  • DE Cox started 42 games, and had 92 tackles, 41 assists, 36 sacks, 52 tackles for loss, 11 blocked passes and 50 QB hurries.
  • DE Donaldson played in 8 games in 2037, but was a non-contributor otherwise, although with a 3.56 GPA.
  • ILB Fleming started 46 games, had 159 tackles, 63 assists and 34 tackles for loss.
  • ILB Baker started 14 games, had 42 tackles, 15 assists, 6 sacks, 2 interceptions and 11 tackles for loss.
  • ILB Whalen had 44 starts, 208 tackles, 68 assists, 8.5 sacks, 54 tackles for loss and 10 interceptions for 125 yds, 2 TDs.
  • CB Banks with 36 starts had 120 tackles, 52 assists, 1.5 sacks, 13 interceptions with 1 TD and 22 tackles for loss.
  • S Drudge never got a start but made valuable contributions with 52 tackles, 12 assists and 5 interceptions with one score.
  • S Jarvis had 38 starts, 177 tackles, 56 assists, 36 tackles for loss, 6 interceptions with 1 TD and forced 3 fumbles.
  • S Brignac with 14 starts had 8 interceptions and two scores in addition to 85 tackles, 40 assists and 2 sacks, 2 fumbles recovered.
  • QB Farrell didn't hurt our academics with a 3.32 GPA.
  • CB Kratky was a walk-on with terrible academics, and thus spent 50% of his time in study hall. With that in mind, he's worthy of respect considering he played on special teams in 51 games, notching 25 solo tackles, forcing one fumble and recovering two with 16 kick returns for a 19.0 average.

Significant freshman/sophomore contributions

  • FB Kaplan got Big Ten honors for the second straight year, and started all 14 games with 95 rushing yds, 1 TD, 247 receiving yds and another TD. His 12 key run blocks gave him a 38.7 blocking percentage.
  • WR Bertram set a IU record with 1116 yds on 57 catches and 13 TDs. If he stays healthy, he'll break every IU receiving record left.
  • T Tanner started 14 games, had a key run block every other time a running play was called on his side, for a 50% key run percentage. OK, that was only 26 times, but still. He allowed 9 sacks, but that was better than Carter on the other side.
