Coaching News
After our impressive 4 year run, my career coaching record is back above .500 (58-57). Despite my turning around one of the worst programs in recent history, and 4 consecutive bowl wins (including one BCS bowl), I have yet to be offered another coaching position. I don't care though, I wont even consider leaving until I'm hoisting a national championship trophy over my head. I do recieve some bad news this offseason, as Gerald Hatcher has retired from his position of scout (Northwest region). I've just realized that this news is acutally meaningless since I cannot yet recruit any state in that region. so-long Gerry. National Coaching Scene The league sees some fairly heavy turnover this year:
2011 Coach of the Year Sammie Blair of Texas has been named Coach of the Year for his performance this past season. He led the Longhorns to their 5th national title in the last 10 years. His all-time record is a mind-blowing 122-7.

Week 1 Review
We've don't have game in week 1 this year, and I've always liked this. I feel like I can get a mental jump on recruiting before becoming too caught up in the game-planning and roster management. Recruiting Recruiting has become a beautiful thing. Where phone calls used to go unreturned, letters came back 'return-to-sender', and fingers slammed in doors, we are now getting our due attention. In the nation's top 100 players, all are now at lest willing to listen to me, listen to Rutgers! Players that used to be the largest of dreams are now realisitcally within our grasp. My major restriction on recruiting is this: Only 3 scholarships may be offered over a 2 week period to red or black coded players. This has become a much smaller obstacle than before, and we can now recruit from some of the best players in the land with them being blue-coded (giving us legitemate to serious consideration). Local Obligation Scholarships I'm required to offer scholarships to any players coming from my 2 home towns of North Plainfield and New Brunswick. This year no player is headed for college from either school, so I'm off the hook. Blue-Chip Recruits QB T.J. Houshmandzadeh - #4 QB, #18 player nationally. scouted 75- 6'3" 202 lbs from Philadelphia, PA. Ricky is a big-time passer from an extremely solid program. His proximity to us is amazing (just 49 miles), meaning only the horrible Princeton Tigers are closer. With his focus on distance and academics, this could be a slam-dunk acquistion of our next great QB. high school stats (after 4 games): 56% completion for 792 yards (8.8 avg), 4/0 TD/Int. Ricky also has incredible legs, running for 441 yards and 5 touchdowns so far. DE Winfred Bernard - #8 DE, #27 player nationally. scouted 92- 6'5" 253 lbs from Medford Lakes, NJ. Winfred appears to be a much better run stopper than pass-rusher, despite his somewhat light frame for the position. An excellent student, Winfred is most interested in Academics (Random Number Theory) and distance. Week 2 Review
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-0) at #14 Indiana Hoosiers (1-0) last meeting: last year we won 30-6 at home series: 1-0 in our favor coaches poll: Rutgers #35 and Indiana #14 the betting man says: Rutgers by 2 attendance: 45,200 (of 52,400) weather: 84 degrees and fair TV coverage: TV4 We won the coin toss and elected to receive. After returning the ball to our 27 yard line, we came out firing on the first play. Claude Altenburger bust up the middle for a 15 yard gain. On the very next play though, Claude showed his early-season jitters and fumbled the ball. We recovered, but the drive was stopped and we punted. The opening quarter was extremely tightly played defensively, and it took a big 33 yard run by Indiana to put themselves in scoring range. A few plays later the Hoosiers took a 7-0 lead. Our offense was playing inconsistently, constantly following up every big play with a couple incomplete passes or stuffed runs. Finally we broke through with 5 minutes to go in the half. Seth Duffy found RB Claude Altenburger for a 4 yard touchdown to knot the game at 7-7. Duffy would again guide us to a score in our two-minute drill offense - A Ballard field goal put us up 10-7 at the break. I wasn't happy with our lackluster performance, but was at least pleased we were winning. The third quarter was largely a punting contest, but we slowly picked up field position. Heading into the fourth quarter our offense starting moving the ball consistently again. Things went well until stalling at the 14 yard line, where we settled for another field goal. The score was now 13-7. In the fourth quarter our superior atheletes took over. We were marching downfield, and with 5:36 to go Seth Duffy ran a 1 yard draw to put us up 19-7. The 2 point conversion would fail, but we felt comfortable. Indiana scored a late touchdown to make us panic, but we recovered an onside kick and kneeled on the ball. The true depth of our control of the game can be seen in our 21 first downs to Indiana's seven. Hey Indiana - Hoosier daddy? Final Score: Rutgers 19, Indiana 14 Player of the Week nominees: RB Claude Altenburger - 16 carries, 119 yards QB Seth Duffy - 18 of 38, 200 yards, 1 TD 0 INT T Dale Gourdine - 6 of 9 run blocking, 0 sacks allowed Injury Report injury-free! Recruiting This was another very productive week, we've got a lot of scholarship offers out already and I'm fairly confident we can land all of them. Local Obligation Scholarships none this season. Week 3 Review
#14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-0) at Connecticut Huskies (1-1) last meeting: last year we barely won 27-26 at UCONN series: 7-2 in our favor coaches poll: Rutgers #14 and Connecticut #59 the betting man says: Rutgers by 3 attendance: 28,600 (of 45,000) weather: 66 degrees, rainy TV coverage: TV5 Despite the gloomy weather, there was a positively electric feeling in the locker room just before game time. Ready to make up for last week's lackluster win, my Knights were ready to kick some ass. We won the coin toss and elected to receive. We started with great field position, our 43 yard line. Our ground game went to work immediately, RB's Claude Altenburger and Jon Burton, as well as QB Seth Duffy ran for 25 yards combined on the first 3 plays. Seth Duffy then hit WR Wesley Kay for a 16 yard gain. Another 15 yard run by Jon Burton had us really moving. A few plays later Seth Duffy found RB Claude Altenburger for a 3 yard toudown. 7-0 Rutgers! U-Conn pulled to 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. Midway through the second we seemed to be deadlocked. Our offense wasn't moving well, U-Conn was playing pretty good defense, and we only led by 4 points. On 3rd and 10 in field goal range Seth Duffy dropped back, then sprinted up the middle on a draw. He juked a linebacker...then a safety... and went 30 yards untouched! 14-3 Rutgers! It would be 17-3 at the half, with us dominating posession and yardage. On our first drive of the second half RB Jon Burton quickly put us up further with an 8 yard TD run, 24-3. After a quick Husky touchdown, our running game absolutely took over. We'd finish the day with 242 yards and 5 TD's on the ground. Final Score: Rutgers 45, U-Conn 17 Player of the Week nominees: RB Claude Altenburger - 17 carries, 98 yards, 2 touchdowns RB Jon Burton - 14 carries, 93 yards, 2 touchdowns QB Seth Duffy - 20 of 31, 286 yards, 1 TD 1 INT. 1 rushing touchdown. Injury Report still injury free! Recruiting I make just one new scholarship offer this week and really shop around for the best available at other positions of need. Week 4 Review
#25 Florida State Seminoles (1-0) at #14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-0) last meeting: we've never met series: 0-0 coaches poll: Rutgers #14 and FSU #25 the betting man says: Rutgers by 8 attendance: 41,500 - a sell out! weather: 66 degrees, stormy TV coverage: TV3 After an opening 3-and-out by FSU, Seth Duffy got out his guns. Moving downfield on some huge passing plays, we scored within 2 minutes on a 12 yard TD to TE Deon Maloney. We quickly led 7-0. FSU came flying back and tied it on 3 plays - this had the looks of a shootout! 7-7. On our next posession we turned it over on downs at the FSU 28. FSU slowly worked their way downfield for a 31 yard field goal. 10-7 FSU at the end of 1. Seth Duffy responded by leading us into scoring range, where added a field goal to tie the game at 10. After a 3 and out by FSU we marched downfield and took the lead on a 2 yard pass to WR Wesley Kay. 17-10. Safety Vince Alston came up with an interception at the FSU 40 and ran it back to the 2 yardline. RB Claude Altenburger took over from there and we led 23-10 at the half. To open the second half QB Seth Duffy hit TE Eddie Buckner on a 36 yard seam route for a touchdown. We had shocked FSU, and now led 30-10. Our running game took over at this point and wore down the clock for the rest of the half. Even when we didn't score we ate up plenty of time, and the defense held. Final Score: Rutgers 44, Florida State 13 Player of the Week nominees: RB Claude Altenburger - 19 carries, 154 yards, 2 touchdowns. 4 catches, 47 yards. RB Jon Burton - 8 carries, 35 yards, 1 TD. 4 catches, 48 yards. QB Seth Duffy - 17 of 22, 221 yards, 3 TD 2 INT. Week 5 Review
West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1) at #12 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-0) last meeting: we won 31-24 at home last year series: 5-5 coaches poll: Rutgers #12 and West Virginia #60 the betting man says: Rutgers by 13 attendance: 41,500 - another sell out! weather: 49 degrees, rain TV coverage: TV5 We received the opening kickoff, and started at our 5 yard line after a holding penalty. RB Claude Altenburger bust loose for a 12 yard gain on the first play of the game, and broke for 14 more two plays later. Penalites would back us up and force us to punt. We would shut WVU down on offense for the entire first quarter (no first downs), but find out offense stumbling as well. Penalites forcing us into 3rd and long killed 2 posessions. When we finally did move the ball we'd turn it over. Seth Duffy was sacked and fumbled at the West Virginia 8 yard line. West Virginia punted to end the first quarter, 0-0. On the first play of the second quarter, QB Seth Duffy hit B.J. Durham with a 46 yard bomb. Claude Altenburger would run it in from 3 yards to put us up 7-0. After an exchange of punts and turnovers, our offense moved into scoring position on three 15+ yard pass completions. Again RB Claude Altenburger took over in the redzone, punching it in from 2 yards out. 14-0 Rutgers. West Virginia would manage only a long field goal before the half, making it 14-3 heading into the locker rooms. West Virginia quickly went 3 and out to start the second half. Seth Duffy continued to carve up the WVU defense, and we were quickly accross midfield. Soon after, RB Claude Altenburger would break free for a blazing 31 yard touchdown jaunt. 21-3 Rutgers. The next drive was all Seth Duffy - except for the last 6 yards. Duffy went over 300 yards passing, while Claude Altenburger snagged his 4th rushing TD from 1 yard out. Week 6 Review
#10 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-0) at #16 Brigham Young Cougars (4-0) last meeting: we won 26-21 last year at BYU series: 3-6 in BYU's favor coaches poll: Rutgers #12 and BYU #16 the betting man says: Rutgers by 14 attendance: 69,000 (of 70,200) weather: 59 degrees, stormy TV coverage: none. strange for such a good matchup Both teams exchanged punts to open the game. We moved the ball rapidly on our second posession, and RB Claude Altenburger put us up 7-0 with a 15 yard touchdown run. Our defense was absolutely on fire, shutting BYU down before they could get going. We rolled downfield again thanks to some great Seth Duffy passing and made it 14-0 on a 4 yard pass to RB Jon Burton. Duffy had the passing game working perfectly, and we hit BYU with another early score. A 14 yard touchdown pass to WR Wesley Kay made it 21-0. Our momentum seemed unstoppable. BYU went 3 and out again, and we took over near midfield. RB Claude Altenburger took it 10 yards for another touchdown and we were up 28-0 very early in the second quarter. We would have really pulled away had it not been for 2 Seth Duffy interceptions. BYU got great field position on both turnovers, and scored 2 field goals to make it 28-6 at the half. We had 235 total yards to BYU's 25, and a 13 to 2 first down advantage. BYU opened the second half with a field goal. We bounced back with a field goal of our own and it was 31-9. Things slowed down in the second half, but we eventually scored once more. A 3 yard Seth Duffy run made it 38-9 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The defenses held each other at bay, and our punter did a fantastic job of pinning BYU inside their 20 time and time again. Game over. Week 7 Review

Seth Duffy scrambled for 7 yards to start things off, and the offense was humming. Duffy found WR Dan Patrick for 21 yards. Claude Altenburger picked up 12 yards on the ground. We quickly moved the the Pitt 22, where our drive stalled. Opting to go for it on 4th and 6, we came up one yard short and turned it over on downs at the Pitt 17. In 1 play Pitt made us pay - it was an 83 yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. Our offense kept it's composure and responded well, with Seth Duffy hitting WR's Wesley Kay and Dan Patrick for gains of 37 and 11 yards. Duffy then ran for 13 yards a play before hitting WR B.J. Durham for a 12 yard touchdown! 7-7. A quick interception by OLB Sherman Hungate gave us the ball back at the Pitt 14 yard line. One play later Seth Duffy hit TE Eddie Buckner for a touchdown to give us a 14-7 lead. A fumble recovery would lead us to another field goal before the end of the first quarter. 17-7. Early in the second quarter we really seized the momemntum of the game when Safety Van Schulz stepped in front of an errant pass, intercepted it, and took it 85 yards for the score! 24-7. A stunned Pitt went 3 and out on their next posession, and we just kept coming. A quick drive on a short field culminated in a 6 yard CLaude Altenburger touchdown run. We would take a 31-7 lead into the half. The second half was a breeze. Seth Duffy got to have a litte fun, and tossed two long touchdowns - 23 yards to WR B.J. Durham and a 49 yarder to RB Jon Burton. We got a little lax on special teams and allowed an 83 yard punt return for a touchdown, it really didn't matter though. Week 9 Review
#24 Boston College Golden Eagles (4-2) at #5 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-0) last meeting: we lost 33-24 on the road last season series: 2-8 in B.C.'s favor coaches poll: Rutgers #5, B.C. #24 the betting man says: Rutgers by 18 attendance: 41,500 - sellout! weather: 56 degrees, fair TV coverage: TV4 With each week the pressure and excitement is growing. We won the coin toss, and another home sellout had Rutgers Stadium absolutely rocking as the ball was kicked off. Starting from our 18 yard line, we handed off to workhorse RB Claude Altenburger, and he found 5 yards. On second down we went long - QB Seth Duffy found WR B.J. Durham down the middle, and Durham evaded everyone. When all was said and done it was a 77 yard touchdown! 7-0 Rutgers! The crowd was incredibly loud as Boston College tried to start their drive. A holding penalty backed them up, then they gaine 1 yard on first down, had another false start, gained 1 yard, and threw an interception on 3rd down! We returned it to the 19 yard line, and would settled for a field goal. It was 10-0 early. We forced a 3-and-out on B.C.'s next posession, but RB Jon Burton couldn't handle the punt return - he fumbled and the Golden Eagles had it at our 20 yard line. In just 4 plays they pulled within 3, 10-7. Bouncing back from our turnover, the offense came out blazing once again QB Sethy Duffy scrambled for 6 yards, RB Jon Burton broked loose for 12, Seth Duffy found WR B.J. Durham for 25 yards, then Duffy hit TE Eddie Buckner for a touchdown. The game was 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was an absolute nightmare. As if they thought it was halftime already, our defense was being walked over on every drive. B.C. would score on 3 straight posessions to make the game 31-17. QB Seth Duffy threw 3 interceptions on our side of the field to set up the easy scores. We went into the locker room down 31-17, wondering if we were still really in this game. --2nd half-- We laid into the players at half time, and were resolved to come out fighting in the second half. We saw a spark of life when we held B.C. to a 3-and-out. We took over at their 39 yardline. It took just 5 plays before RB Claude Altenburger plowed into the endzone, making it 31-24. On B.C.'s next posession we kept attacking. After earning 1 first down, a false start penalty backed them up. Forced into 3rd and 15 they threw the ball - into the waiting hands of Safety Van Schulz. He picked it off at the 50 and ran it back to the 5, nearly scoring before being tripped up. It wouldn't matter. One play later QB Seth Duffy found WR Wesley Kay and the game was tied at 31-31! After an exchange of punts, Boston College took over at their own 35. When we nearly forced them to punt, a moronic pass intereference call kept their drive alive. They didn't waste the advantage we'd given them and their RB broke a trap play for 49 yards and a go-ahead touchdown. It was 38-31 in B.C.favor heading into the 4th. We starting our next posession at our 22 yard line, and began to feel the pressure. Down in the 4th quarter, we knew we needed something big - and soon. QB Seth Duffy found WR Welsey Kay for a 19 yard gain to start things off. RB Claude Altenburger broke a 10 yard run, we were moving the chains! Seth Duffy found WR Dan Patrick for a 22 yard gain. 3 consecutive runs would stall, and we'd settle for a Vinny Ballard field goal. We were down 38-34, but at least knew a touchdown could put us ahead. Feeding off the offense's energy, the defense pushed B.C backwards 5 yards and forced a punt. We took over at our own 38 A holding call dampened some of our enthusiasm, and backed us up to the 28. We hadn't been moving the ball consistently, so I thought 1st and 20 might be tough to overcome. We handed off to RB Claude Altenburger to try to catch them a bit off-guard, boy did it work! Claude broke through the linebackers and outran the safeties. The 6' 220 lb monster just wouldn't be stopped. 72 yards later we were winning 41-38 with just 8 minutes remaining. Boston College went to their passing game to try to regain control. Picking up 2 first downs on 3rd down conversions, we feared they had our number. But the defense came up big on the 3rd set of downs, and forced a punt to our 32 yardline. Our offense realized they could put the game away, and they went for it. Seth Duffy hit WR Wesley Kay for 19. He hit B.J. Durham for 12. He scrambled for 5, found Kay for another 8, and WR Kirk Cassidy for 14 more. After his horrific 2nd quarter, he had taken the team upon his shoulders. A 20 yard bullet to WE B.J. Durham found us in the endzone once again! We went up 48-38 with a shade over 3 minutes to go! Our defense would hold them on 2 posessions, and we just ran out the clock. I'm happy to escape with that one! Week 10 Review
Miami Hurricanes (4-3) at #4 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-0) last meeting: last year we lost 35-17 on the road series: 3-7 in Miami's favor coaches poll: Rutgers #4, Miami #51 the betting man says: Rutgers by 20 attendance: 41,500 - sellout! weather: 59 degrees, rain TV coverage: TV5 We won the opening coin toss (for what seems like the 8th time this year), and recieved the ball in the endzone for a touchback. Things started sloppy with two incomplete pass attempts from QB Seth Duffy, but Claude Altenburger picked up 10 yards for the first down on a 3rd-and-10 delay run. Our early-game fireworks ignited again this week, on the next play QB Seth Duffy found WR B.J. Durham for a 67 yard touchdown! 7-0 Rutgers. Miami took over at their own 20 and mounted a slow, consistent drive. A 20 play, 5 series drive came to a crashing halt at our 26 yardline when Miami failed to convert on 4th down. While they didn't score, their offenses ability to consistently move the ball showed that they could score on us. RB Claude Altenburger picked up 9 yards on two runs to start the next drive. QB Sethy Duffy then completed 4 straight passes of over 10 yards to 4 different recievers. The drive ended with RB Claude Altenburger scoring on a 4 yard touchdown run. A missed extra point failed to extend our lead, but we were up 13-0. Miami bounced back with a drive similar to their first, only this time they scored. Garnering 5 first downs as they moved down the field, they scored on a 14 yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 13-7 early in the second quarter. On the second play of our next drive, Miami seized momentum. An errant pass from QB Seth Duffy gave Miami the ball in our territory at the 40 yard line. A 20 yard pass, followed by runs of 10 and 8 yards had Miami at our 2 yard line before we could blink. Threatening to take the lead, our defense had to step up. Our defensive line drew a false start on Miami's left guard, moving them back to the 7. We stuffed their first down run for no gain, and knocked them back 1 yard on second down. On third down Miami's QB dropped back to pass and gunned for the endzone - luckily Safety Van Schulz was there to reel it in! We took over at the 20. The next drive was QB Seth Duffy showing his big play magic once again. He would WR Welsey Kay for 24 yards, then hit WR B.J. Durham for another big-time touchdown, this time from 52 yards out. We took a 20-7 lead. We finally forced Miami to punt - and they did so on both of their next 2 posessions. The second would set up another quick touchdown by us. RB Claude Altenburger would take it in from 4 yards out. We went into the to the locker-room with a commanding 27-7 lead. ---2nd half--- The second half was a much stouter defensive battle than the first, both teams punted the 3rd quarter away. Miami would be the first to score in the second half, after backing us up deep in our zone and having great field position after the punt. A 15 yard TD pass made it 27-14 early in the 4th. On the very next posession, our offense opened up it's bag of tricks. A counter-trap run for RB Claude Altenburger resulted in a 40 yard gain, moving us past midfield immediately. An end-around to WR Dan Patrick on the next play caught Miami off-guard, and we picked up another 26 yards. QB Sethy Duffy would find RB Jon Burton for a 4 yard touchdown, and we again felt comfortable with a 34-14 lead. Our defense would shut Miami down, and our offense would drain the clock. Breaking News
The first BCS poll has been released, showing which teams are in contention for the national championship. A surprising new face sits atop the rankings, Rutgers University! Perennial challengers Ohio State and Texas are in a good position to reach the national title game, but the Big East conference may be in the driver's seat. Rutgers tough schedule has put them atop the rankings, but two monumental games remain. A trip to #10 Virgina Tech and a week 13 Rutgers at Syracuse matchup. If Rutgers can survive Virginia Tech, then the Rutgers/Syracuse winner will most likely finish the regular season as the #1 team in the power polls. The looming Michigan-Ohio State battle also will have an enormous impact on the shape of the national title hunt. Week 11 Review
#4 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-0) at #13 Virginia Tech Hokies (6-2) last meeting: last year we triumphed 27-24 at home series: 2-8 in Virginia Tech's favor coaches poll: Rutgers #4, Va Tech #13 the betting man says: Rutgers by 2 attendance: 55,800 (of 55,800) weather: 71 degrees, fair TV coverage: TV3 We kicked off for a change, and Va Tech took the touchback. Right away Virginia Tech asserted their offense, and converted 3 3rd-and-long situations to keep drives going. We would eventually hold and force them into kicking a field goal. They took an early 3-0 lead. The entire half was one of offense futility for us. Our passes kept getting batted away, our runs stuffed, and we racked up the penalties. Our only solace was our excellent run defence, and occasionaly ability to come up big in passing downs. Still, Virginia tech would slowly grind out a victory in the field posession battle, and scored one touchdown. the game went to the half at 10-0. We were certainly still in the game, but the offense showed almost no signs of life. We'd need to do something in the second half if we planned on winning the game. We went a miserable 3 and out on our first posession of the half, courtesy of a holding call on the kick return and a false start penalty during the drive itself. Virginia Tech immediately began sailing downfield again. Everytime we had them in a desperate situation, they'd get out of it. 3rd and 12? No problem, they'd complete a pass for 13. After converting a ridiculous 4th and 20 from our 39, I was getting ready to load the revolver and end my misery...but as Virginia Tech was plowing towards the endzone, something magical happened. DT Oscar Padilla (hurt shoulder and all), burst into the backfied, ripped the ball out of the hands of Virginia Tech's running back, and lumbered 89 yards for a touchdown! He broke 3 tackles along the way, and dragged a wide receiver for the final 20. At 10-7 we were definitely back in the game! As if laughing at our attempt to get back into the game, Virginia Tech's offense turned on the turbo boosters. Consecutive passes of 22, 10, 23, and 22 yards put them at our 10 yardline before I could blink my eyes. 3 runs later and it was again a 2 score game, 17-7. On our next posession, I was getting pretty down about our chances, but QB Seth Duffy converted a miracle 3rd and 19 to keep the drive alive, finding WR Kirk Cassidy for a 38 yard gain. Another big 3rd down conversion kept the chains moving, and a huge 26 yard touchdown pass to WR B.J. Durham pulled us to within 3. There was 14:55 left in the game, and we trailed just 17-14. We have to keep the national title dream alive! We kicked off to the Virginia Tech 25 yardline, and our defense dug in. we allowed one first down before pushing Va Tech back 2 yards on the next series. They punted back to us, and we took over pinned back at our 13 yard line. We started the drive with 10:50 remaining. I realized that we probably needed to at least pull even on this drive to really think about winning the game, pretty soon time would be a bigger opponent. QB Seth Duffy started things off brilliantly, hitting WR Wesley Kay for a 15 yard gain, moving us into a more comfortable part of the field. He went right back to Kay 2 more times, for gains of 3 and 14 yards. A few plays later he converted a 3rd and 5 with a 13 yard pass to TE Eddie Buckner. He converted our next 3rd-and-9 with a 21 yard pass to WR B.J. Durham. Suddenly it was like our passing game could do no wrong. We were hit for a 3 yard loss on the next run, but on 3rd down Claude Altenburger came up with exactly the 6 yards we needed. On the next play QB Seth Duffy bolted up the middle on a QB draw, dove for the endzone and.... touchdown!! Holy Shit! We were up 21-17 with 4 minutes remaining! Kicker Vinny Ballard knocked the kickoff out of the back of the endzone, and our defense could just feel that the game was theirs for the taking. We pushed the Hokies back 1 yard on first down. We pushed the Hokies back four yards on second down. We held them to a 7 yard pass on 3rd down and forced a punt! We took over at our own 33 with just over 2 minutes remaining, and worked on running down the clock. We ground out exactly 10 yards on 3 runs, and more importantly forced Va Tech to use all 3 timeouts. The game was in our pocket until back-to-back penalties, holding and unnecssary roughness. We tried our best to run down the clock, but managed just 8 yards and had to punt back to Virginia Tech. The Hokies took over at their 31 with just 41 seconds remaining. I was still sweating, I knew their passing offense could potentially come up big. We covered well on first down, forced their QB to scramble, and contained him to a 5 yard gain. The clock was down to 18 seconds.. On the next play, we rushed the passer hard, forcing an incomplete pass. There were just 12 seconds remaining. On the next play, Tech's QB found a streaking WR over the middle, he caught it, spun out of a tackle and was heading for the endzone..... I begin having a heart-attack... but wait! He's tripped up from behind, well short of the endzone. GAME OVER! The Bells must ring! Week 11 BCS poll unveiled
Not much has changed this week in the BCS polls. Ohio State is the new #1, edging past Rutgers to take the inside track for the national title game. Although dropping to #2, Rutgers and Ohio State actually both pulled away from the 3rd place Syracuse Orangemen by about a point. With Rutgers playing Syracuse in week 13, it's clear that Ohio State, Rutgers, and Syracuse all control their own fate. Rice and Virginia Tech have dropped out of the top 10, and been replaced by Miami of Ohio and Washington. Week 13 still has the two games likely to shape the face of the BCS bows: Ohio State at Michigan, and Rutgers at Syracuse. A Michigan victory could pave the way for Texas to head to and unprecedented eight consecutive National Championship game, while an Ohio State win would likely mean the Buckeyes taking on the Big East champion for the title. Week 12 BCS poll unveiled
Rice and Florida replace Miami of Ohio and Washington in this weeks top ten, but the important top few teams remain the same. Things have shaped into a neat four team race. Ohio State is clearly in the driver's seat, and their matchup with Michigan next week will test their worthiness as national title contenders. The Rutgers/Syracuse winner is a lock for the national title game at this point, and might even leapfrog to #1 in the nation. Texas is in the rare position of needing some help. The Longhorns have played in seven straight National Champsionships, winning 4 of them. But - if Ohio State can defeat Michigan ,Texas will likely be out in the cold. The fact that my team can now advance to the National Championship with a win still seems like a dream. Here are the new top 10 teams: Code:

Week 13 Review
#4 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (10-0) at #3 Syracuse Orangemen (10-0) last meeting: last year we won 45-27 at home series: 2-8 in Syracuse's favor coaches poll: Rutgers #4, Syracuse #3 the betting man says: Syracuse by 2 attendance: 56,000 (of 56,000) weather: 43 degrees, rain TV coverage: the specatcular TV1 covered the game The atmosphere of the sold-out Syracuse crowd was absolutely electric. Fans and player alike knew that the winner of this game would not only be crowned Big East champion, but they all-but guaranteed themselves a spot in the National Championship. I can say without reservation that this is the biggest game in our team history - and a win would ensure and even bigger game would follow. Syracuse won the toss, and took over at their 34 yardline. Our defensive line came out pumped, and stuffed the Orangmen for no gain on their first two plays. Our stantard 3rd-and-long demons haunted us again, as the Orangemen completed a 17 yard pass for a new set of downs. Another 20 yard pass quickly moved them deep into our territory, and another 3rd and long completion (of 18) yards had them knocking on our door. But we hit Sryacuse for a loss on 3 consecutive plays (including 2 sacks) to push them back and make them settle for a 44 yard field goal. 3-0 Syracuse. An excellent Jon Burton kick return was negated by an illegal block penalty, forcing us to start pinned at our own 9 yard line. 3 so-so runs had us some up short of a first down - but an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Orangemen kept our drive alive. QB Sethy Duffy found WR Wesley Kay for a 12 yard gain to earn us a new first down. We'd run for another first down before passing for two more. Seth Duffy was looking very sharp, and we looked primed to score. But, as soon as i was gaining confidence, and errant Seth Duffy pass was intercepted at the Syracuse 28 yard line. There was 1 minute remaining in the first quarter. Syracuse settled back into their offense, and moved the ball well through the air. While their ground game was getting hit for losses often, the quarterback was routinely bailing them out on 3rd down. The drive came to a screeching halt at 37 yard line. On four consecutive run plays they: gained 3 yards, lost 3 yards, gained 5 yards, lost 3 yards. We took over at our own 35 and felt great about our defensive play. If our offense would move a bit more consistently we could have a real chance. QB Sethy Duffy was hitting everything in the short passing game, finding WR Dan Patrick for 8 yards, and RB Christian Shulz for 8. All of this set up a 40 yard bomb to WR B.J. Durham. A spearing penalty on Syracuse gave us a first and goal from the 8 yard line. On 3rd down Seth Duffy would find WR B.J. Durham for a 7 yard touchdown!! 7-3 Rutgers. Both teams were shutting down the opponents running game, but being victimized by the pass. The last scoring opportunity of the half was ours. We took over near midfield, and only had enough time to move a few yards and attempt a long field goal. Vinny Ballard's 59 yard attempt was dead straight, but fell short of the crossbar. We had a slight statisical edge at half-time, and we led 7-3. ---2nd half--- We recived the kickoff at our 22 yardline to open the half. QB Seth Duffy found WR Dan Patrick for a 13 yard gain. 3 straight penalties broke up the flow of the game, holding on us, false start, then offsides on Syracuse. Apparently the penalties didn't break our concentration. On the next play QB Seth Duffy found QR Wesley Kay streaking down the sideline, he hit him in stride and he ran untouched for a 75 yard touchdown! 14-3 Rutgers! We exchanged punts after that score, and had the ball again at our 42 yard line. The play after a false start, QB Seth Duffy was blindsided in the backfield, and fumbled the ball. Syracuse recoverd at our 37. 3 plays later the Orangmen were in the endzone, and within 4 points at 14-10 Our run defense came up big again on the next two drives, shutting down Syracuse and consistently pushing them into 3rd-and-long situations. We took over at our 29 with 1 minute to go in the 3rd quarter. QB Seth Duffy had plenty of time to through, and again found a wide-open man... WR B.J. Durham had shaken his man on a post route, hauled in the ball, and dashed 71 yards to lengthen our lead! It was 21-10 Rutgers heading into the 4th! --4th quarter--- Syracuse took over at their 33 yard line. Hit for a 5 yard loss on first down, it was obvious their run game was struggling. Two consecutive passes for 10 yards gave them a first down. A 3rd straight pass and completion gave them an 11 yard gain and a first down on our half of the field. A first down intentional grounding penalty backed them into a 2nd and 21 situation. Two straight runs for gains of 6 and 7 yards gave them a manageable 4th and 8 situation. Apparently deciding a punt was too conservative, Syracuse elected to go for it on 4th down. Their pass attempt was batted away, and we took over at our own 39 yardline. 3 runs didn't get us very far, but the clock was ticking. We punted back to the Syracuse 36. Syracuse had less luck. We pushed them back 5 yards and forced a punt. Taking over at our 25 yardline, we knew this drive could put the nail in the coffin. There was 6 minutes to go and we led by 11, if we didn't make any killer mistakes the game was ours. Expecting us to try to literally run the clock out, we caught Syracuse by surprise by coming out gunning. Completions to WR Dan Patrick and RB/WR Jon Burton both resulted in first downs, putting us at our 46 yard line. RB Jon Burton then ran for 3 yards. QB Seth Duffy scrambled for 4 more. On third down Seth Duffy found RB Christian Schulz for 11 yards and another first down! RB Claude Altenburger was hit for a 5 yard loss on the next play, but RB Jon Burton gained 10 on second down. On 3rd and 5 QB Seth Duffy ran a draw for exactly the 5 yards we needed! Syracuse was now desperate, and was calling timeouts. Another Jon Burton run for 4 yards, followed by a 9 yard pass drained the Orangemen of their timeouts. From the 1 yard line, RB Jon Burton plunged in to lock the game up a 28-10! Syracuse would spend the last 40 seconds frantically trying to score, but coming up short. Is this the prelude to a national title game? Two big week 13 matchups have reduced a 4 team race for the national title game to 2. Our win over Syracuse catapults to a near certain National Championship berth. Michigan's upset win over Ohio State now has Texas in the driver's seat for the #2 berth. Texas still faces Texas A&M and then Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship though, so their tickets aren't punched quite yet. If Texas does slip up, then Ohio State may still have a chance to sneak back into the picture. Unfortunately (for them) Cincinnati proved the critics right. The formerly undefeated Bearcats were no match for just the fifth best team in the Big East. This means the Texas/Rutgers winner will be the only undefeated team in the country. Virginia Tech continues their late-season fade, as they couldn't quite handle Texas A&M.

The bowl committees simply couldn't resist the Ohio State-Michigan rematch, but the result had to be a surprise. After Michigan runied Ohio State's national title dreams with a 24-21 win, everyone was expecting a close game. Instead, Ohio State absolutely trounced the Wolverines, and will finish the season wondering what might have been. Syracuse looked impressive, and the Big East continued it's solid bowl season.

#1 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (11-0) vs #2 Texas Longhorns (12-0) last meeting: have never met series: 0-0 coaches poll: Rutgers #3, Texas #1 the betting man says: Rutgers by 2 attendance: 71,500 - a sellout weather: 62 degrees, fair TV coverage: plenty of overexposure on TV1 We come into this game on the crest of a school-record 15 game winning streak. A pre-season longshot, we've captured just our 2nd Big East title in scholl history (2008 being the other), and reach the post-season for the 5th straight season. Bettors and oddsmakers are showing a surprising amount of faith in us, installing us as two point favorites. One can only imagine our dominating 4-0 record in bowl games has been a consideration. Our team is guided by QB Seth Duffy, who's wrapping up his third solid season and his best to date. While Duffy was a pre-season Heisman favorite, the real surprise this season has been the balance in our offense - the running game has in many ways been the key to our success. Essentially 3-deep at running back, RB Claude Altenburger has been impressive enough to maintain his starting job for a third straight year, and has seen his touchdown production soar. Defensively we've been adequate, with the occasional brilliance of our safeties being a difference-maker. If I had told you we could get this far with a redshirt freshman and true freshman at cornerback, I would have been lying. Texas is the dominant force in college ball. Enterening their eigth consecutive national championship game (10th in 12 years), the Longhorns are looking for their 6th national championship, and their 4th in 5 years. Led by perhaps the greatest QB in college history, QB Wayne Martinson, the Longhorns passing game is typically their key to victory. Martinson is in his final year at Texas, and will likely become the first player in NCAA history to be a Heisman finalist in all 4 seasons of play when the year is finished. Texas is an astounding 134-7 overall, and is on a 25 game winstreak heading into the title game. One large winning streak will come to an end in San Diego, California.
