I'm quite surprised TE Kolodzik didn't get any Player of the Week love. 97 yards in our offense. I'm impressed.

The news on DE Andrew Harding is not good. Although x-rays were negative, he's scheduled for a MRI on Monday for possible tears in ligaments along his left ankle. Diagnosed currently with a "high ankle sprain"; it appears serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the season.

The injury forces some defensive end moves for the Tennessee Vols. Reserve Jorge Chauduri, a junior, will start this week against Ole Miss. Sophomore Wesley Morris will spell Chauduri during obvious passing situations, and will be the top backup at the end position. Behind Morris on the depth chart is sophomore Riddick McCormick.

Chauduri has played in five of the six games this season. He is credited with 10 tackles, 2 assists, and 2 sacks on the year. Morris has played in four contests, but has yet to register a tackle. McCormick has played in three games, netting 3 tackles.

Reviewing the game film on Sunday was a blast. Beating Florida will be one of my most fondest memories.

We did a great job overall. Coverage broke down some; but with the talent of Florida that is to be expected.

On to Ole Miss. They're 2-5, 0-4 in SEC play, and have allowed the most points in the SEC. They're poised for another beat down. The only thing worse than their rushing defense is their passing defense. They're just not very good defensively and that means huge numbers for us this Saturday.

Offensively, they're pretty good at passing. They run a bunch of singleback formations and throw the ball often. They're ranked pretty high passing wise, actually. But I don't believe they'll be that successful against us.

They're also spinning from all the injuries they've had. Four starters are listed as out. The RB, both DTs, and an OT. Not good for the Rebels.

Six other players are listed from doubtful to probable.

The practice week goes well. Special emphasis is placed on kick off coverage units, as well as our nickel and dime coverages.

Neither CB Bart Serra or TE Dominic Witt are able to practice, and are out for the game.

I decided to do a little something different this time when posting the polls. Normally I just cut and paste the coach poll, but since we're getting further into the year, I'm going to rank them by coach poll, and provide the rest of the information for the COACH Top 25 only.

As you can see, Florida dropped out of the Top 25 with the pasting we gave them.

Interesting team is Syracuse, sitting at #12. Didn't we beat them?

Game time is approaching. The Ole Miss football team has arrived in Knoxville and so has the Rebel faithful.

A sell out is still predicted despite rain in the forecast and below 50 degree temperatures.

A little cold rain won't stop the Vols.

It does make for a quick Vol Walk to the stadium, though.

Soon afterward, I'm running through the T and we're about to get this one kicked off.

Brewster and company come back to the sideline with news we won the toss; we will receive the opening kickoff.

Time to strap the helmet up. I'm about to go in.

The crowd is electric as the kick sails down to the UT 3 yard line into the hands of our best player, J.B. Brewster.

Brewster races upfield but is upended at the 16. Wow. The Ole Miss tackler must have slipped through a breakdown on the blocking scheme.

"Power I right, split right, option right, on 1, on 1." With that we head to the line of scrimmage.

It seems teams will do anything to try and confuse me now. Ole Miss has lined up in a 34 defense. This is the first time I have been faced with it. I don't know how our first play will look against this look.

I take the snap and read the end. He races upfield to the back. GOOD! I start to turn upfield and I get smacked. I didn't even see it. A blitzing ILB nailed me for a two yard loss and the crowd gets quiet quickly.

WR Terry Castleberry comes in with the next play, a fade route and he's the primary receiver. A lob to Castleberry appears to be way off as Castleberry didn't get past the line of scrimmage, but a flag is dropped near Castleberry.

Defensive holding is the call. 10 yards, repeat 2nd down.

WHAT??? Fulmer goes nuts. That's an automatic 1st down, and I'm certain he's right, but I believe the penalty is 5 yards. Regardless there is confusion, but the referees ignore our pleadings. Obviously, I'll take the penalty yards, and let the officials know we'll take the penalty. BS.

2nd and 2 at the 24, and I find Brandon Mason in the flat. He turns the short reception into 7 yards and a first down.

Brewster returns to the field and we run option right again. This time there's no blitz and I'm able to pitch to Brewster. J.B. goes up the sideline for 9 yards. 2nd and 1 and we hand off to Brewster. He runs off right guard for 4 and the 1st down.

1st and 10 at the UT44. We send Brewster up the middle, but he gains just 1 yard. We probe the left tackle area, but Brewster gets just a yard there as well. 3rd and 8, and we send Brewster in motion. Typically this results in a pass to the halfback, and today is no different. However, the safety covering Brewster tips the ball away, and the punt team comes onto the field.

I shake my head in disbelief. Ole Miss isn't supposed to be that good. What the heck happened?

Punter Daniel Wheeler sends a 42 yard punt down to the Ole Miss 12, where the returner calls a fair catch.

And we begin talking to the offensive coordinator about what went wrong. Let's get some discussion going about this freaking 34 defense, please.

10:50 left in the 1st quarter, no score.

We don't have long for discussion, as Ole Miss goes 3 and out. The short punt should have given us good field position, but CB Marc Billmaier danced around trying to make something happen. The result? A loss of friggin 7 yards and Fulmer stares him down as he comes to the sideline.

1st and 10, UT at the UT 47 yard line; 9:35 left in the first quarter.

We send Brewster up the middle again; but he loses a yard. This 34 defense is confusing more than just me.

Brewster in motion; and I take the snap. Brewster doesn't cut this time and stops 5 yards downfield. I get him the ball and he turns upfield for 5 more. He's stopped just short of the 1st down.

3rd and 1. Time to stick it to them. TE Monty Witt comes in for the receiver. We're running the ball.

"Power I right, 23 lead on 2, on 2, ready, break!" I take the snap and hand the ball off to Brewster deep so he can find the hole...but instead he's tackled almost immediately for a loss of 3. The blitzing ILB once again confused our blocking and he slipped by 3 blockers to make the huge stop.

Wheeler comes out again, this time to punt from the Ole Miss 47. Wheeler tries a coffin corner, but it's ineffective. His 24 yard punt rolls out of bounds at the Ole Miss 23 yard line.

1st and 10, Ole Miss.

7:30 left in the 1st quarter, no score.

We're afforded some more time to discuss our problems this time, as Ole Miss is penalized 3 times. Coupled with a sack, Ole Miss goes 3 and out and has to punt from their own 1 yard line.

The Ole Miss punter gets the punt away and it travels 27 yards. The ball rolls about 5 yards further downfield, and Billmaier watches as nearly the entire Ole Miss punt team converges onto the ball to down the punt.

Incredibly, Billmaier reaches between the legs of a defender and grabs the ball. Billmaier is going to try and return the punt!

IDIOT!!!!

He grabs the ball and runs wide to try and escape the Rebels, but he's dropped for a yard loss by the punter!

1st and 10, UT, at the Ole Miss 34 yard line. 5:39 left in the 1st quarter.

Quote:
MISS 2 Fay punted 32 yards from the MISS01.
TENN 42 Billmaier returned the ball -1 yards to the MISS34.
Tackled by MISS 2 Fay.

1st and 10 at the Ole Miss 34; 5:39 left in the 1st quarter.

Option right, and the end goes after Brewster. I turn upfield, this time gaining a yard before I'm tackled. 2nd down and we go to the air. The pass to Everett is tipped away, however.

3rd and 9; we flip the formation and try to drag Everett underneath to get him the ball, but I'm rushed by the Rebels and miss the wide open Everett. I had to throw the ball a little sooner than I wanted.

4th down, and a look to the sideline. Coach is sending in a play, so we're staying on the field.

Post pattern to TE Kolodzik...he's open. The pass is tipped as I didn't see the safety.

Crapt. The ball goes over on downs. Ole Miss takes over at their 33 yard line.

4:35 left in the 1st quarter; no score.

Fortunately, Ole Miss isn't able to capitalize on the field position. They're forced to punt after 3 plays again. The 42 yard punt is actually returned for a positive 6 yards by Billmaier.

Ladies and gentlemen, Marc Billmaier!

The crowd gives a mock cheer for the forward return of the punt.

1st and 10 UT at the UT 42. 3:22 left in the 1st quarter.

Brewster carries over left guard, and breaks a tackle at the line of scrimmage. He spins past the the filling safety and he's up the sideline! He crosses midfield, the 40, 30, 20, 10; finally taken down at the 7 by the opposite field corner.

51 yard gain; the longest gain by the Tennessee offense all year!

FIRST DOWN, TENNESSEE!

Momentum is on our side. The crowd going nuts. Rocky Top in our ears.

Option right, and the end crashes onto me. The pitch to Brewster nearly gives us the touchdown, but he's stopped a yard short.

Option left on 2nd down and goal, and this time Brewster takes the pitch and runs to the corner of the endzone!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!!

Ray Alston adds the extra point.

2:26 left in the 1st quarter; Tennessee 7, Ole Miss 0.

Alston's kickoff is downed for a touchback, and Ole Miss again goes 3 and out. The 36 yard punt is taken by Billmaier, who called a fair catch at the UT40.

1st and 10 UT, at the UT40. 1:23 left in the 1st quarter.

I hit Brewster in the flat for the first play, and he turns upfield for a gain of 11 yards. A screen to FB Prescott is blocked by a defensive lineman. Castleberry turns a short slant pass into a 12 yard gain over the middle as the first quarter expires.

1st and 10 on the Ole Miss 37.

End of the 1st quarter: Tennessee 7, Ole Miss 0.

We open up the 2nd quarter on the Ole Miss 37, and start off with a dive up the middle with Brewster. J.B. gains 4 before he's tackled.

Back to back incompletions on flat passes, one tipped and one dropped, forces a 4th and 6 at the Ole Miss 33.

Once again, Fulmer keeps the offense on the field. The call is a screen to Brewster. It's completed, and Brewster scampers upfield, only to be dropped a yard shy of the 1st down.

We turn the ball over on downs again; Ole Miss ball at the 28.

14:08 left in the 2nd quarter; Tennessee 7, Ole Miss 0.

Ole Miss finally begins to move the ball, and quiets the crowd of Tennessee. The ball eventually rests on the UT 18 yard line, where an ill fated draw by their QB results in a fumble. Credit safety J.R. Blades with forcing the ball out, and DE Jorge Chauduri with the recovery. The short return gives UT the ball at it's own 21 yard line.

1st and 10, UT at the UT21; 9:55 left in the 1st half.

Brewster goes up the middle on 1st down, and gains 7, followed by a flat pass turned into 10 yards by FB Prescott. Brewster goes up the middle for 2 more, and then off right guard for 5, setting up 3rd and 3 at the UT45.

Play action is the call, but it's broken. I'm sacked from my blindside and the ball comes out. The ball is picked up by a Rebel who returns the ball to the UT27 and a first down for the Rebels. G Mack Raymond is injured on the play as well, but the extent of his injury is not yet known.

Dang it. Dang it. Dang it.

7:30 left in the 1st half; Tennessee 7, Ole Miss 0.

Three plays later my turnover is redeemed by true freshman CB Roy Dalzell, who's playing the nickel corner due to Serra's injury. He returns the ball to the UT41.

1st and 10 UT, 7:04 left in the half.

Mason motions out of the backfield and runs a post pattern. I hit him for 10 to start the drive. Brewster gains a yard off right tackle, and then gets 9 on a toss to the right.

A counter to the right nets 8 more for Brewster, followed by a run off right tackle again. This time for 5. 1st and 10 at the Ole Miss 26.

Option right, and Brewster takes the pitch up the sideline for 17 more. 1st and goal at the 9.

A false start, incomplete pass, and a personal foul afterward on a lineman results in 2nd and goal at the UT29.

Mercy.

A screen to Brewster nets 4 yards on 2nd, but another screen to Brewster is broken up quickly. The defense "looked very familiar with that play". The very first time all year that has happened.

4th and a quarter of the field, and I expect we'll kick the ball, but coach sends out a play, not the kicker.

"Bunch right, all 9's, on 1, on 1" is the call, but it doesn't work. I end up running for my life and losing 2 yards in the process.

Again, we turn the ball over on downs. Bad call, in my opinion. We should have kicked right there. Who does he think I am?

2:50 left in the half; Tennessee 7, Ole Miss 0.

Ole Miss is forced to punt after gaining one first down, and the 37 yard punt is returned by Billmaier for a yard to the UT26.

1st and 10, UT. 1:08 left in the half.

My 1st down pass attempt falls incomplete but a flag was thrown at the beginning of the play. 12 men on the field for the defense; 15 yards, 1st down! No wonder it felt like there were 9 men rushing me!

A fade to Everett after the penalty results in another 20 yards, despite the fact he was double covered. 1st and 10 at the Ole Miss 39.

We try to surprise the defense with a run up the middle, but they get one on us. Brewster is tagged for a 3 yard loss. Time out, UT. 40 seconds left on the clock.

2nd and 13, and I try a slant to Everett. Umm, Everett, where are you? I fire the ball where he's at after having to stop my throwing motion. It falls incomplete. What the heck?? A flag comes in, defensive holding. 2nd and 3.

What in the world? They've blown another call. That's an auto first down. Oh well.

We go option right, and the defense leaves me a lane. I head upfield; tackled at the 25 for a 1st down. Time out, UT.

We decide to give the ball to Everett on a reverse during the time out. Bad idea. He loses 4 on the play, and we have to call a time out with 14 seconds on the clock.

We decide not to mess around anymore and let Alston attempt a 46 yard field goal.

He nails it, and his kickoff and subsequent return end the half.

Half time. Tennessee 10, Ole Miss 0.

And now for your half time entertainment...

Umm, I'd like to say that the UT v UF game was rigged by the refs. a couple of those calls against our defense were bogus, and... and... ahh, nevermind, please fire Ron Zook.

Crim

I knew you'd enjoy that one, Crim.

I was totally shocked at the outcome. The #17 ranked Gators lose in a blow out? Come on...they had one loss on the year. I doubt anyone thought that would happen. I certainly didn't.

We certainly have come out flat against a weak Ole Miss team, though.

We enter the locker room as if we've been defeated. We're leading a horrible Ole Miss team by just 10 points. It's not the defense's fault. I'd say every bit of the blame lies on our side.

The 34 defense was unexpected and every time they send a linebacker he usually comes free to stop us for a loss. Throw in the turnover and all the times we went for it on fourth down...and it's no wonder we're down.

At least half time allows us to regroup and come up with some concrete plans to attack this defense.

Our offensive coordinator starts explaining to us that if we can block out that blitzer, no matter where he's coming from, then that opens a tremendous hole for us. He points to J.B.'s 51 yard run in the game as a prime example. They're taking chances, and hoping for the big play. It's about time we started making these Rebels pay.

Ole Miss gets the ball to start the half, but the Rebels are forced to punt quickly. The punt rolls out of bounds at the UT 41 yard line.

1st and 10, UT; 13:20 left in the 3rd.

We start the drive with a quick slant to Everett, but I end up overthrowing the ball. Brewster gains 8 on a toss, but the play is called back for holding. 2nd and 20; I find Kolodzik open via play action who turns the short reception into a 13 yard gain and a much more manageable 3rd and 7. We return to play action, sending Brewster off tackle. I spin around quickly and throw to FB Prescott, who went to the flat. He makes the catch, but is spilled 3 yards shy of the first down marker...4th and 3 at the UT44.

I start to turn to the sideline when I'm told to get back to the huddle; we're going for it.

Someone tell Coach to quit doing this.

4th and 3; we send Brewster in motion. This time the pass is to Everett on a 5 yard out route. He breaks the arm tackle of the corner and gains 16 on the play.

First down, Tennessee, at the Ole Miss 36.

Brewster nets 5 up the middle, but a flag comes in. Brewster is victimized again of a good gain on a holding call, sending us back to the 46 yard line. We send Brewster off left guard for 5, then up the middle for gains of 3 and 7. When it's all said and done, it's 4th and 5 at the Ole Miss 31.

The call? Go for it. Mercy.

Option left is our call this time, and the outside linebacker crashes on me. I pitch off to J.B., but the ILB fills admirably, and we lose 3 yards.

The ball goes over to Ole Miss at the Ole Miss 34.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

9:54 left in the 3rd; Tennessee 10, Ole Miss 0.

Ole Miss evidently came out from the locker room with a way to defeat our defense, because that's exactly what they do.

With an excellent combination of runs and passes, the Ole Miss offense drives confidently downfield to the UT12. The drive is capped when the true freshman tailback scampers in untouched for a 12 yard touchdown. The Rebels add the extra point, and we're in a dog fight.

Billmaier takes the extremely high and short kickoff at the 17 yard line and gets 20 on the return, despite the swarm of tacklers around him.

1st and 10 at the UT37.

We're whistled for false start before we can get the ball snapped, and when we get the ball snapped on 1st and 15, we're whistled for ineligible man downfield on our play action pass. 1st and 20 at the UT27.

We motion Brewster out and try to feed him the ball on an out pattern, but the ball it tipped away. We come out with a similar play on 2nd down, but this time hit Kolodzik as he crosses the field into the space vacated by the safety. He gains 28 yards with the reception, and a first down at the Ole Miss 45.

Another option left; and again the Ole Miss defense is all over us. Brewster is dropped for a yard loss. Ole Miss jumps offside before the next play. Funny thing was I wasn't trying to get them to do so. We come back out with option right, and we finally get everyone blocked just right. The OLB crashes onto me, the pitch to Brewster and absence of linebackers gives him free reign for 18 yards to the Ole Miss 12.

We motion Brewster out again, this time to give us a flanker look. The space created as the defense stretched gave me enough space to hit Kolodzik over the middle for a touchdown!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston adds the extra point, and Rocky Top is heard once again.

3:11 left in the 3rd; Tennessee 17, Ole Miss 7.

The kickoff results in a touchback. Our defense made some adjustments while on the sideline, and they shut down the Rebel offense this time. The 30 yard punt rolls out of bounds at the Ole Miss 44.

I like punts that roll out of bounds; no chance for Billmaier to screw up.

1st and 10, UT; 2:05 left in the 3rd.

Brewster takes a pitch right up the sideline for 11 on the first play, and you get a sense we may have finally broken the Rebel defense. Play action to Prescott results in another gain of 11. 1st and 10 at the Rebel 22.

Brewster goes over left guard for 2, and a flat pass to Mason is tipped away. 3rd and 8; Brewster manages to make 10 yards out of a toss right. The run ends the 3rd quarter.

End of the 3rd. Tennessee 17, Ole Miss 7.

The run at the end of the 3rd resulted in a 1st and goal at the 10 yard line.

Mason in the backfield, and he gets his first carry of the ballgame. He goes up the middle for 3. Brewster returns and takes an option left up the sideline for 4. 3rd and goal; and Mason is back in. He motions out, and runs a shallow cross underneath Kolodzik. It rubs off his defender, and he's open. I don't throw the prettiest ball, but it gets there.

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston adds the extra point, and we have breathing room.

13:25 left in the game; Tennessee 24, Ole Miss 3.

Alston sends another kick off into the endzone for a touchback. Fortunately, Ole Miss isn't able to move the ball on offense again. This time, the punt rolls out of bounds at the UT48.

Another chance for screwing up by Billmaier off the board.

Thank goodness.

Play action on 1st down, and I'm hit before I know it. An OLB came around my blindside, and Prescott barely got to him. It wasn't enough, and I am dropped for a 5 yard loss. A counter to the right by Brewster gives us 4 of the yards back, but now it's 3rd and 11.

No need for play action here, so we call a drop back pass. I drop back seven steps, and heave one down the middle to Everett, who's running a post. He makes the catch and a couple of extra yards as well. Give him 20 yards and give UT a 1st down at the Ole Miss 33.

Brewster goes over left tackle for 2, and then loses a yard up the middle. On 3rd and 9, I find Kolodzik open on a crossing route, good for 22 and another 1st down at the Rebel 10 yard line.

Brewster takes a pitch left and dives for the goal line! He's pushed out at the inch line and it's now 2nd and goal...inches from the endzone. We give the ball to Brewster once again, and he leaps over the pile for another touchdown!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!!

Alston adds the extra point.

Ole Miss, backed into a corner, comes out fighting. They go to the air and exploit our secondary. They score rather quickly and even the 2 point conversion comes through the air.

We scramble on the sideline to put together our onside return team during the TV break.

Ole Miss surprises us all by kicking deep, and Billmaier takes a knee in the endzone.

Play action on 1st down results in a 18 yard reception by Everett. Another unintended offside penalty on the Rebels give us a 1st and 5 at the UT 43.

Brewster plunges up the middle for 2. 2nd and 8 and Brewster cuts inside the block of a blitzing linebacker and scampers free of the defense. He's finally caught at the Ole Miss 11 yard line.

First down, Tennessee!!

Toss left to Brewster; 4 yards. Off right tackle to Brewster; 5 yards. 3rd and 1 at the 2 yard line. Brewster dives up the middle and scores!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston adds the extra point.

3:00 left in the game; Tennessee 38, Ole Miss 15.

Ole Miss sends out their backup quarterback. He leads the Rebels downfield, but eventually throws an interception. Credit Marco Michalske, a 2nd team safety with the pick.

1st and 10, UT, at the UT23. 1:55 left in the game.

I head out onto the field, this time with a full complement of backups. Terrell Bedford goes up the middle for 3 on first down, and in comes Brandon Mason.

Option right, and we're strung out by the defense. I'm eventually forced to pitch to Mason who jukes a Rebel defender and heads up the sideline.

They're

Him!

Mason sprints 74 yards for the touchdown!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!!

Alston adds another extra point.

Ole Miss takes the kickoff and makes a short return. The offense comes out and runs the ball to finish the game out.

FINAL SCORE: Tennessee 45, Ole Miss 15.

J.B. Brewster is given the game ball afterward in the locker room. I'm still not sure how we ended up with 35 points in the 2nd half, but I'll take them.

Tell me about it. 10 points, and 7 thanks to J.B.'s longest run of the season. Without that, we probably don't score. Twice I'd rather have gone for FG's than first downs. I guess the coach felt we had this one, regardless. The 28 points in the 4th were bogus...two long runs helped on two of them...great field position off of 30 yard punts helped on others.

We've got Vanderbilt up next, and they led LSU at the half this past week. They're hurting though, quite literally.
