Preseason Game 5
New York at Philadelphia
New York 0 14 3 0 - 17 Philadelphia 13 7 7 6 - 33 The Jets concluded their preseason in Philadelphia with a thump. The Eagles dominated the Jets in all areas of play with a 33-17 victory. This could have been worst, had the Eagles not pulled Donovan McNabb midway through the second quarter with the score 20-0. McNabb played sensational completing 13 of 17 passes for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Jets did get to within 6 before the first half came to an end. The Jets drove 80 yards for a touchdown shortly before the end of the half. Pennington made some nice throws, and Lamont Jordan grinded out tough yards, capped by a 4-yard touchdown. Jacoby Shepherd intercepted Eagles' quarterback, AJ Feeley and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown when it appeared that the Eagles were about to make the score 27-7. The Jets came out in the second half and looked flat once again, as the Eagles controlled the line of scrimmage and stifled the Jets, sending them home with a 2-3 preseason for Ed McGregor's first preseason as a head coach in the NFL. Coach McGregor said, "We did some good things this summer, however, as you can all see, we need to improve in several areas to win games in this league." The Jets received some bad news following the game. Rookie OLB Boss Bailey tore tendons in his thumb and is expected to be out the first half of the season. Other than some players who are a little nicked up, the team is ready to open the NFL season up in Washington. |

Preseason Injuries
Many players in the NFL feel that the preseason should be shortened a game because of injuries, in otherwise meaningless games. However, coaches and owners say it is a nice way to evaluate younger players, and give them experience.
I wonder what Chicago's coach, Brenden Hoffman feels about the NFL preseason. Hoffman lost the Bears' quarterback of the future, Kyle Boller for the season with a torn rotator cuff on his throwing shoulder. "Kyle Boller is recovering from surgery to his throwing shoulder, we expect Kyle to make a full recovery and lead the Bears in the 2004 season." It is uncertain yet, whether Boller's injury is a career threatening injury. Arizona lost RG Chris Dishman for 9 weeks with a broken fibula. Cincinnati's first round draft choice, and number 1 overall, Carson Palmer will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken Tibia. Cleveland lost FL Andre Davis for 6 weeks with a stress fracture to his leg. Dallas lost newly acquired FB Richie Anderson for the season with a knee injury that required reconstructive surgery. Denver lost reserve guard Steve Herndon for 13 weeks with a hamstring injury. Houston lost starting TE Billy Miller for the season with MCL Knee Surgery. Jacksonville lost rookie FS Rashean Mathis for 10-12 weeks with a severe ankle sprain. Minnesota lost starting QB Duante Culpepper for 2 months with a dislocated elbow. The New York Giants lost QB Kerry Collins for 2 months with the same injury as Culpepper. The Giants also lost guard Rich Seubert for the season with a ruptured elbow tendon. Pittsburgh lost Receiver Plaxico Burress for the season when he had to have reconstructive knee surgery. Teams must trim there rosters to 53 players for opening day next week. |

Jets Trim Roster
The Jets trimmed their roster to the league requirement, 53 players.
The Jets released Defensive Tackle, James Reed. Reed a 7th round draft choice in 2001 never developed in his two seasons with the Jets. The Jets also, released WR Kevin Swayne. Swayne who has been with the team since 2001 was a standout in the Arena League before signing with the Jets as a free agent. The Jets also released QB Jamie Martin. Martin was brought in with the opportunity to battle for the third string position with Rookie Brooks Bollinger. Martin was who played in only one preseason game this season, against New Orleans in the rain threw three interceptions. The 33-year old Martin said he appreciated the opportunity to compete for a roster spot and felt confident he would find work elsewhere by season's end. The Jets placed LB Boss Bailey on the inactive roster. Bailey is recovering from a torn thumb ligament and is expected to play later in the season. |

AFC Report
Around the League
Division Favorites (based on preseason power ratings). AFC North Could this be the year that Cincinnati finally breaks out of the cellar, and even wins the division? It is possible. Jon Kitna (47 rating) had a wonderful off-season and is ready to be the starting quarterback for the struggling franchise. The running game features Dillon (54) and Rudi Johnson (59), along with a passing game of Kitna to Johnson (57), Warrick (49) and rookie Kelley Washington (32). The offensive line is solid lead by the center, Braham (75) and tackle Anderson (91). Defensively they look for DE Justin Smith (49) to break out along with solid play from DT Williams (66), LB Brian Simmons (60) and MLB Kevin Hardy (64) who came in to replace departed Takeo Spikes. Baltimore and Pittsburgh should battle for second place, however, neither appears to be strong enough to make it to the playoffs this season. Baltimore is led by Rookie QB Drew Henson (19) who will take some time to adjust to the speed of the NFL. Jamal Lewis (70) is coming off of knee surgery and has to attempt to carry the load for this team. The receivers just are not good, making it easy for teams to key on emerging TE Todd Heap (57). Defensively Ray Lewis (64) and Peter Boulware (70) lead the charge, however it is thin after that. Pittsburgh has a nice group of LB’s, Farrior (60), Bell (54), Gildon (67) and Porter (77), however not much else. Maddox (20) appears to have been a one-year wonder, and was beat out by journeyman Charlie Batch (25). Bettis (38) is on the downside of his career and is not starting material anymore. Look for Zereoue (35) to get his share of carries this season. They will have Ward (79) as there only throwing option since Burress (49) went down with a season ending knee injury. Look for the defense to be Pittsburgh’s only chance. Cleveland is a mess right now, their O-Line is weak with the exception of Verba (47) and rookie center Jeff Faine (39). Couch (30), who has struggled in his four previous seasons, will be looking to get rid of the ball quickly and take advantage of deep threats Johnson (42) and Morgan (51). Their starting LB’s have a combined rating of 86, that is for all three of them. There run D is going to fall heavy on the D-Line who has a good pair of run stuffers in Warren (40) and Roye (42). AFC South The South appears to be a two-team race, Indianapolis and Tennessee, no surprise here. Indianapolis is loaded on the offense side of the ball, Manning (84), James (74), Harrison (77), and Pollard at TE (76) should provide plenty of explosion. Manning should have time to throw with an O-Line that is excellent at pass blocking. The only weakness could be if Indy has to run inside, there guards just are not that good. The defense should be able to apply pressure to the quarterback, second year DE Dwight Freeney (38) and Chad Bratzke (60) are good pass rushers, and the LB’s can contain the run with Washington (48) and Morris (56). Tennessee is a good team but is missing a few pieces to the puzzle. McNair (83) does not have much to work with right now. George (38) is showing his age and as a result will back up rookie Christopher Brown (35). The receivers are good, with Mason (55) and Bennett (41) and TE Frank Wycheck (45), the passing game will need to be sharp to carry the Titans over the Colts. The Titans lack the ability to stop the run right now. Young DT’s Haynesworth (38) and Long (49) are still raw, but the Titans should be solid against the pass, with the pass rushing skills of Kearse(45) and Carter (51), and the ability to shut down receivers with Rolle (69) and Schulters (84) Indy will have to get through Tennessee to win the division. Jacksonville will continue their rebuilding process First round selection Byron Leftwich (25) has looked sharp in the preseason and will be leading the offense when he is ready after having some problems with a sore knee. Veteran Mark Brunell (46) will begin the season as the starter. Defensivly they should be sound with the signings of Hugh Douglas (84), to apply pressure and against the run with stuffing MLB Mike Peterson (69). The expansion Houston Texans enter their second season led by quarterback David Carr (35) and have added some talent to help Carr out. Houston drafted wide out, Andre Johnson (39) who is a burner and will be the deep threat that quarterbacks love to have. They still need to address their O-line that allowed Carr to be sacked a league high last season. On defense they are solid running a D very similar to Pittsburgh, a 3-4. Houston has the LB’s to do so and the corners to cover, Glenn (81) and Coleman (56). Houston will improve on their win total but will probably finish last once again. AFC East Miami is the clear favorite in the East this season. Miami possesses the best talent in the league on defense. They have arguably the best combined DE’s in Taylor (83) and Burnett (76), leaders at LB with Zach Thomas (78) and future Hall-of-Famer, Junior Seau (60) and the stongest secondary in the league with corners Madison (75) and Surtain (90), and safeties Knight (71) and Marion (58). If Miami can find a way to put some points on the board the road to the AFC Crown goes through Miami. Offensively Fielder (44) has perhaps the toughest inside runner in Ricky Williams (76). Williams can carry the ball 25-30 times per game, he has that kind of endurance. Miami has the make up to do it, they must get through the season strong from start to finish, something they have struggled with in the past. New England looks to rebound from a disappointing season and get back to the post-season. This is Brady’s (49) second full season as the starter and he still has a lot of development left (Brady’s future – 69). New England finds ways to move the ball through the air and on the ground. Smith (48) at the age of 31 can still carry the load when New England needs to grind it out. New England will also, rely on their short passing game and depth at receivers to move the football. On defense New England will use a 3-4 with a lot of blitzing, and moving around of players. Newly acquired safety Rodney Harrison (78) replaces Lawyer Milloy (68) who was surprisingly let go before the preseason. The Jets are led by Chad Pennington (38), who enters his first full season as the team’s starter. Pennington’s spark helped lead the team to the East crown for the first time since 1998. Martin (63) is still solid at RB, but the firing of the front office and the departure of G Thomas (45) and Coles (54) to Washington leaves this team reeling. Mawae (70) is an all-pro at center, but the guards are rated as the worst in the league. New York is rated near the middle is most categories and that leads you to believe this team is just mediocre. Buffalo enters its second season in the Drew Bledsoe (57) era, and Buffalo is beginning to see that Bledsoe is on the downside of his career. Bledsoe has been battling off field demons during the off season, the latest being a battle with severe depression. He just does not have any strength left to throw the deep ball, and the receiving corp is without Peerless Price (72) who was is now with Atlanta. Moulds (59) still can go over the middle and get it, but it will be difficult for him to repeat the numbers he had with Price lined up on the same side of the ball. On defense the team looked to improve through free agency, bringing in DT Sam Adams (47), LB Takeo Spikes (69), and safety Lawyer Milloy (68) these additions should help.. AFC West This division could be the most competitive division in football. Kansas City, Denver and Oakland make this a three-team race while San Diego looks to improve and perhaps get them out of the cellar. Kansas City was perhaps the most explosive team on offense last season but could not make a stop on D, this off-season they addressed some of their defensive needs and have upgraded their D, although they are still vulnerable. Kansas City was relieved to get the news that RB Priest Holmes has recovered from his injury and is at 100%. Holmes (83) is the best all around back in football right now. Holmes will get many touches this season while first round pick Larry Johnson (54) waits for his chance. Trent Green (55) begins his third season with the Chiefs and enjoys his weapons, Holmes, Gonzalez (71), and Kennison (54). Special teams will contribute as well; Kansas City has the best return man in the game, Dante Hall (rated 92 and 91 in Kick and Punt Returns). Denver has made yet another quarterback change. Free agent Jake Plummer (52) joins the Broncos after many almost seasons with Arizona. Denver possesses perhaps the most explosive running back in the league in Clinton Portis (59). Portis was a big surprise last season, and now that defenses are aware of him it should be interesting to see what he can do with a season of experience. Portis gets to run behind one of the better lines in football and Plummer gets to throw to veteran TE Shannon Sharpe (82), and wideout Rod Smith (63). On defense the Broncos have a solid DL led by DE Trevor Pryce (75) and linebackers Mobely (68), Wilson (74), and Gold (43) to anchor an average defense that hopes to make enough plays to help Denver into the playoffs. The defending AFC Champions look to rebound from their miserable performance in the Super Bowl, however, the oldest team in football (28.1 years old) has many question marks. Can Gannon (49) find that magic one more season with Brown (41), Rice (43), Porter (51) and Garner (66)? The O-line is led by Barret Robins (65) who has overcome his off field problems to protect the aging Gannon. Oakland’s strength on defense is without a doubt their secondary, corners Woodson (65), Shaw (40), Buchanon (37), and the first round draft choice Nnamdi Asomugha (33) and safeties Woodson (85) and Dorsett (50) make it difficult for anyone to throw against them. San Diego goes with Drew Brees (24)over veteran quarterback Doug Flutie (33) for the season. Brees is in the last year of his contract any many are saying that if the team does not see improvement Brees will not be made an offer. Tomlinson (63) continues to demonstrate his all around abilities like his division counter mate Priest Holmes. Opponents can expect a heavy dose of Tomlinson, especially when there is little else. |

NFC North
Green Bay comes in as the early favorites in an otherwise weak division. The Pack is led by the one and only Brett Favre (76), although he still is missing some playmakers that he so desperately needs, Favre continues to put up excellent numbers. Favre does have a perhaps the best running back in the NFC in Ahman Green (76). Green can do it all for the Pack, he can run in and outside as well as catch the ball. Green is emerging as the dominate player on Green Bay. Gone on defense is DE Vonnie Holiday, which hurts this team. Holiday provided the solid all around play that is now going to have to be found through his replacement, Gbaja-Biamila (32) who does not measure up to Holiday. Green Bay has veterans in Marvin Jones (52) and Darren Sharper (76) to lead the defense and help the Pack contend for the North title. Detroit looks to surprise many. Second year coach, Tracy Wade has tightened the reins on the Lions and has them ready to compete every week. Second year quarterback, Joey Harrington (29) had a superb preseason, and with the addition of first round draft pick, Charles Rogers (51) the Lions look to develop a potent passing attack for years to come. The defense is a veteran group led by DE Robert Porcher (67). If the group can stay healthy and Harrington continues to develop the Lions could be the darlings of the NFC. Minnesota had a major setback in the preseason when quarterback Duante Culpepper (44) went down with a dislocated elbow. Culpepper will miss the first two months of the season. That leaves veteran quarterback Gus Frerotte (17) to get the ball to the volatile Randy Moss (89). Moss could be the best player in the game. The Vikes have what appear to be an explosive group of RB’s in Michael Bennett (55) and rookie Onterrio Smith (54). Smith has the ability to be a threat catching the ball, but running with it remains to be seen. The O-line is anchored by center Matt Birk (56) and tackle Bryant McKinnie (53), who looks to improve from last year’s rookie season. During the off-season Minnesota focused on revamping their D, and they did do that. The additions of linebacker Chris Claiborn (54) and rookie EJ Henderson (42) along with CB Denard Walker (49) from Tennessee could be enough to get Minnesota back to the top of the division if the Pack stumble and Frerotte can hold the ship together until Culpepper returns. Two years ago Chicago surprised everyone with their run to the playoffs, however, that seems like a long time ago. Chicago had a horrendous season last year, and look to rebound back to respectability. Chicago looked good early in the preseason, primarily because of the spark provided by rookie quarterback Kyle Boller (16). However, Boller went down with a season ending shoulder injury and veteran Chris Chandler (25) looks to lead the Bears. The offense has no weapons at all. The defense can hold its own with the likes of LB Brian Urlacher (76), DE Phillip Daniels (63), and SS Mike Brown (57). However, this is a group that will be on the field a lot, and it will get the best of them. NFC South The defending Super Bowl Champions, Tampa heads into the season with the look to repeat. Tampa comes back with 19 out of last year’s 22 starters, led by quarterback Brad Johnson (56). Tampa was unable to upgrade their running back position so Pittman (53) will get the nod once again. The O-Line is good, which should give Johnson plenty of time to find K.Johnson (46) and McCardell (43) along with TE Dilger (53). The D-Line features DE Simeon Rice (75), Warren Sapp (75) and up and coming Anthony McFarland (63). This could be the last season McFarland is under the guidance of Sapp who will become a free agent. Linebackers Quarles (60) and Brooks (75) along with CB Barber (78) and Kelly (63) and safety John Lynch (75) make this defense the best in football. The road to the NFC crown goes through Tampa Bay. Carolina has built a defensive line that could be the cornerstone of the franchise’s future. Last year Julius Peppers (56) tore up the league before his season came to an abrubt halt. Peppers has the potential to be the best DE in the league. On the other side Mike Rucker (65) and DT Kris Jenkins (68) give the Panthers the presence to stop any offense. On offense the Panthers added RB Stephen Davis (65). Look for the Panthers to grind it out this season in slugfest style football. Atlanta looks to improve on their run to the playoffs last season that saw them end Green Bay’s perfection at home during the playoffs. Michael Vick (34) is explosive, and as he develops the Falcons will find themselves further into the playoffs. Atlanta made the switch to a 3-4 defense in attempt to be more aggressive and take advantage of the speed they possess on the defensive side of the ball. But right now Atlanta will be battling Carolina and New Orleans for second place with neither team making it to the post season. New Orleans decision to trade Ricky Williams and go with Deuce McAllister (57) seems like the right move now. McAllister is ready to be considered one of the top backs in the league after his performance last season. However, pressure will fall on Brooks (19) who has failed to develop into the quarterback the Saints envisioned a few seasons ago. NFC East The NFC East appears to go through Philly once again. McNabb (50) and company look to avenge the last two seasons in which they lost the NFC Championship Game. Philly still does not appear to have the weapons that McNabb needs to score a lot of points but the defense appears to have a lot of tools despite Hugh Douglas’ departure during free agency. Philly brought in Marco Coleman (75) to replace Douglas at end, Philly also drafted DE Jerome McDougle (57) who is a good looking pass rusher. DT Corey Simon (59) gives the Eagles the inside presence they need with a weak MLB. Philly’s secondary is good, led by CB Troy Vincent (73). Vincent is one of the top corners in the league going one on one. On the other side of Vincent they have Bobby Taylor (76) and at FS Brian Dawkins (73). Philly needs to make this year count, both Taylor and Vincent are playing in the last year of their current contract, and if Philly was willing to let Douglas get away one wonders if they will keep their corners who have become the main reason Philly’s defense succeeds. Dallas does not appear to be as bad off as expected. QB Quincy Carter (34) has developed slowly but has a nice up side. Hambrick (51) replaces the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, Emmit Smith, and gets to run behind a decent line led by LG Larry Allen (86). Wideouts Galloway (75), Glenn (58) and rookie TE Jason Witten (34) will give the Cowboys options with their passing game. Defense is where the ‘Boys are at their best, starting on the D-Line with Ellis (60) and Glover (87) to the safeties Woodson (87) and Williams (42), this could give Dallas their best chance to finish out of the cellar compared to the past few seasons. The Giants come in looking to avenge last season’s wild card lost to SanFrancisco. However, the task will not be easy. The Giants are without quarterback Kerry Collins (67) for the first two months of the season after he dislocated his elbow. The Giants will rely on Jesse Palmer (14), Tiki Barber (76), Jeremy Shockey (65), and Amani Toomer (54) to provide the offense. Veterans, Strahan (80), Hamilton (57), and Barrow (67) look to lead the defense and perhaps get the Giants back to the playoffs. Washington begins the Patrick Ramsey (22) era, and Ramsey will have plenty of opportunity to prove himself. Washington let Stephen Davis go during the offseason to replace him with the speed running of Trung Canidate (33). The money they saved by not retaining Davis allowed them to pick up guard Randy Thomas (45) to go along with tackle Chris Samuels (52) and spend money on wide receiver Laverneus Coles (54) to play along side Rod Gardner (52). On defense the Redskins have playmakers LaVar Arrington (67) and cornerback Champ Bailey (87). Bailey is in the last year of his current contract and by the looks of Washington’s cap for next year the ‘Skins will have a tough time retaining Bailey. Washington fans, do not expect much from the new look ‘Skins. NFC West This could shape up to be the best race in the NFC. Seattle and St. Louis appear to have the pieces of the puzzle to make this a fun division to watch. Seattle comes in with a little bit of shakeup, they give the nod at QB to Trent Dilfer (53) over Matt Hasselbeck (37). Their backfield consists of Shaun Alexander (56), and 2nd year back Maurice Morris (39) who provides a nice change of pace from Alexander. Either way their back gets to run behind FB Mack Strong (64), tackle Walter Jones (71) and a good offensive line. The receiving corp of Robinson (62), Engram (50), Jackson (37) along with TE Mili (58) gives the Seattle offense plenty of options. To strengthen their secondary they drafted CB Marcus Trufant (33) to play under veterans Willlie Williams (65) and Shawn Springs (55), along with SS Reggie Tongue (57) and FS Doug Evans (53). Seattle will need their secondary to shut down the passing game of St. Louis if they want to win the West. St. Louis looks to rebound after a disappointing season. The weapons on offense are still there. Warner (47) will have plenty to work with this season. Although his rating is not as high as in years past, Warner is still the man in St.Louis. Marshall Faulk (69) enters his 10th season as perhaps the most talented all around back in the league. His breakaway speed is down, but do not count him out. Warner has the emerging superstar Torry Holt (67) and the consistency of Isaac Bruce (49) to work with along with a line that has the bookend tackles, Pace (85) and Turley (70). The defense looks towards FS Aeneas Williams (73) to provide the plays to lead the Rams back to the playoffs. San Francisco comes in with a team that will need to score a lot of points. Garcia (44) will have to make the most out of throwing to Terrell Owens (70), and TE Jed Weaver (45). Veteran Garrison Hearst (50) figures to get most of the carries behind a good line. On defense the Niners are missing a pass rusher, and therefore the secondary of Rumph (27), Plummer (55), Parrish (89) and Broson (46) will have to bring their “A” game week in and week out. Poor Arizona looked to make some moves during the off season, but all that happened is that they ended up with retreads, sorry Emmitt. |

We lost a game in which we made a lot of mistakes. The biggest ones, penalties, and special teams. On special teams Brien missed two field goals, including one with :23 seconds left, giving the ball back to Washington, who drove enough yards to kick a game winner. Also, allowed Washington to return the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Players whose performances stood out, Hannibal Navies, starting for injured rookie, Boss Bailey. Navies had 9 tackles, and defended one pass. John Abraham had 1 sack, and 2 hurries, Curtis Martin had 141 total yards of offense and Chad Morton returned a kickoff for a touchdown, already proving his case that he was worth the money to keep. We came out of the game without an injury as we prepare for Miami's visit. Miami won their opener 20-17 over Houston. The key matchup will be Miami's running game. Ricky Williams comes off a 126 yard rushing performance, Miami rushed the ball a total of 39 times for an average over 5 yards per carry. The Jets held Washington to an average of 2.82 yards per carry. |

We fell to 0-2 with a 20-13 loss against Miami. The Jets led early, 10-0, then the bottom fell out. Miami scored twenty unanswered points in route to the victory. Miami improved to 2-0. The Jets travel to 1-1 New England next week. Injury Report - Chad Pennington suffered bruised ribs but is listed as probable. Boss Bailey continues to be listed as questionable and will remain on the inactive roster. His expected return still remains 6-8 weeks. Same 'Ol Jets
Hempstead, NY - Despite the changes in the Jets' front office the team is off to a slow, 0-2 start. After flat losses to Washington and Miami the Jets find themselves in a must win situation in Week 3 in which the travel to face the Patriots.
The Jets have lacked the fire that sent them to the Divisional round of playoff last season. Last season under quarterback Chad Penninton the team reeled off 8 wins in the final 11 games, followed by a wooping of the Indianapolis Colts, only to be followed by a loss in Oakland for the second consecutive season. Pennington, who has been compared to the likes of Namath and Montana, appears to be the team's franchise, and under Pennington the team is looking to make changes that will grow with their young budding superstar. However, in two games this season the team has looked confused, making mental mistakes that have been costly. Many look at the Jets as a team that will need time to adapt to their new coaching staff, while others mumble, "same 'ol Jets." |

Jets Look Forward to Pats!
Hempstead, NY - At Coach Ed McGregor's weekly press conference he stressed a sense of urgency for his team as they get set to head to New England to play their division rivals, the Patriots. McGregor stated that the team is going to need to eliminate any mental mistakes to win this ball game.
In two weeks the Jets have committed 3 turnovers while forcing none, they have had costly penalties, given up a kickoff return for a touchdown, and missed a field goal that gave Washington field position to quickly move in and win in week one. McGregor says that Bailey has been listed as questionable for this week's game, however, he will still be listed on the inactive roster. Pennington will start and is expected to play the entire game, despite sore ribs from a shot he took by Miami's defensive end, Jason Tayor. Offensively the Jets just have not moved the ball through the first two week. Moss, Coles replacement, has managed 8 receptions for a mere 100 yards. With Moss' explosiveness the Jets are looking towards Moss to stretch the field to open up underneath for Chrebet and Becht. Second round draft pick, Tyrone Calico, who was brought in to start at the SE position has just one catch for 10 yards as Chrebet's backup. On defense, which was a concern for the Jets, they have given up just 537 yards to their opponents in two games, however, the Jets have caused no turnovers. The Jets need Cowart and John Abraham to make some big plays and be the difference makers that McGregor sees them as. New England comes in at 1-1. Last season they fell short of making the playoffs, just one year after winning the Super Bowl. The Pats feel they have improved their D, which struggled against the run, with the addition of Ted Washington and moving Seymour to the DE position. Rookie Dwayne Robertson figures to add to the Pats pass rush. Offensively Brady looks to continue his improvement, and against this Jets team, the Pats can cause problems with their quick passing game. |

The Jets let yet another one get away. Up 17-10, midway through the 3rd quarter the Patriots went on to score 16 unanswered points in route to a 26-17 victory. The Patriots win moved them to 2-1 while the Jets now sit at the bottom of the AFC East at 0-3. The highlight for the Jets was Santana Moss. Moss his is trying to emerge as the Jets #1 receiver with Coles moving on, caught 6 passes for 123 yards as the Jets threw for 279 yards. However, the rushing game of the Jets was non-existent. The Jets were led by Curtis Martin and his 43 yards, while the rest of the team rushed for 30 more. Tom Brady had his way with the Jets' secondary, completing 22 of 34 passes for 275 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sam Cowart finished with 7 tackles, and 6 assists in the losing cause. Jets rookie Fullback, B.J. Askew was injured in his first start and is listed as doubtful with a hyperextended elbow. Linebacker, Sam Cowart, the Jets leading tackler, is listed as questionable with a sore groin. The Jets should be without rookie LB, Boss Bailey for another 3 weeks or so. The Jets come home next week to face the 1-1 Dallas Cowboys. |

Jets Drop 4 Straight
Hempstead, NY - The New York Jets dropped their fourth straight this past weekend to the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 14-6. This marked the first time since the Rich Kotie disaster of 1996 that the Jets have opened the season 0-4.
The Jets were dismal on offense once again. The Jets have scored just 49 points in the first four games, an average of 12.2 points per outing, dead last in the league. Entering the season the team thought offensively they could compete with anyone, yet Pennington has struggled to get going this season and is in jeopardy of holding a clipboard and watching veteran Vinny Testaverde take the helm. Curtis Martin has struggled as well, his yards per carry has gone down in each game this season. Defensively the Jets have played ok, however the defense needs to make some plays, and that they have not done thus far. The defense has forced just 1 turnover in 4 games, last in the league. Special Team has not fared too well, with the exception of the job Chad Morton has done on kick returns, the special teams have struggled. Santana Moss has averaged just 3.3 yards per punt return on 9 tries. Punter Dan Stryzinski is 26th in the league with just a 38.1 yard average per punt, and kicker Doug Brien cost the Jets the Washington game when he missed two field goals. Coach McGregor is pleased that the Jets have a bye this week. "We are going to use this week to regroup and figure out how to win some ball games, whether that means changing our game plans, or making personell changes will remain to be seen." Speculation is that McGregor will bench last year's sweetheart, Chad Pennington, who was named the franchise during the offseason, for veteran Vinny Testaverde. Early in the season and you can begin to here some of the grumblings about the moves the Jets front office has made. |

The Jets dropped their fifth straight, and have nearly ended the season for themselves with still eleven games to play. The Jets played a poor game in poor weather in front of their home crowd. The game was filled with boos as the team looked flat and could not get things going. Veteran wide receiver, Wayne Chrebet stated, "this is as bad as it gets, and I feel responsible. I feel that Chad is taking a lot of heat for the lack of prodcution by the offense, when the fact is we are making no plays to help him." Coach McGregor tried to sound upbeat following the game, but his face showed the wear and tear that this league can put on an individual. "In all my life I never thought it could be this rough. We are playing with all these teams, however, we can just not find the way to win one of these games. Rest assure, this team's season is far from over. This team will come back next week, upbeat and ready for the next challenge." The New York Jets are 0-5, and have not started a season like this since the Rich Kotite era. The Jets travel to Houston next week, to face the Texans who are also, 0-5. Someone will get their season started next week, while the other can begin to think of next season. |

For the Giants it was their first win of the season. Brett Favre continues to play at a mind boggling 110.9 quarterback rating. Favre has led the Pack to a 5-1 record including 17 touchdown passes. Jake Plummer has enjoyed a resurgence in his career. Plummer joined the Broncos during the offseason through free agency and in doing so has led the Broncos to a perfect 6-0 record. Plummer is completing nearly 66% of his passes and has a rating over 100 for the season. Randy Moss seasons has been placed on hold, the All-Pro receiver will be out for at least 6 weeks with a broken jaw. Moss had caught 35 balls in 5 games for 4 touchdown passes. Colts' defensive back, Walt Harris has been in the right spot at the right time thus far this season. Harris has 6 interceptions in 6 games, returning 1 for a touchdown helping the Colts to a 5-1 record. The Colts offense has been underachieving this season, and for a change we are talking about the play of a Cots' "D" man. Dennis Northcutt was a human highlight this past week as he led the Browns to a lopsided win over the defending AFC Champions. Northcutt returned to punts back for touchdowns in the Browns 38-15 victory. Rookie Quarterback Drew Henson has surprised many with his play despite missing the previous two season to pursue a career in baseball. The Ravens liked what they saw in Henson and drafted him in the 3rd round. The move has payed off. To the Ravens surprise Henson quickly adapted to the system and has led the Ravens to a 3-2 record. Henson's development allowed him to replace last year's starter Chris Redmond. A lot of people around the league were surprised when the team passed Kyle Boller and Rex Grossman in the first round and drafted Terrell Suggs with their only first round pick. Houston, TX - The New York Jets skid hit six games yesterday when they lost to the Houston Texans 27-10. The Jets were completely outplayed on both sides of the ball by the Texans who got their first victory of the season. Curtis Martin fumbled the ball two times, as the Jets turned the ball over three times in all to the Texans. Pennington who completed 21 of 33 passes was unable to move the team with any consistency. Coach McGregor announced shortly after the game that the team needs a change and that veteran quarterback Vinny Testaverde will get the call to lead the Jets against the Eagles next week in Philadelphia. Philadelphia who has been struggling this season will welcome the opportunity to play the Jets and get their season back on track. After the game Chad Pennington responded after learning of the decision, "Obviously I am disappointed that I will not be the starting quarterback next week. I feel as if I have let down my teammates in not delivering this season. I understand why a change is needed and I will do everything I can to help Vinny and the offense get ready for our game with Philadelphia." Pennington looked upset but handled the decision like a professional. Curtis Martin, who fumbled twice, commented, "Chad looked good out there today, he was throwing well, I put the ball on the ground twice, and he is the one who is suffering for my mistakes. I have not felt this low in my NFL career at anytime, but I am not ready to give up, we will get ready or I will be explaining the reason for our seventh straight loss." The Jets staff is beginning to feel the heat after they have stumbled to an 0-6 record. "Things are just not clicking yet," McGregor stated. The Jets are still in search of their first victory, and this week they travel to Philadelphia who has started off slow, but have shown signs of a team that feels they are contenders this season. Eleven months ago the Jets were in the process of capping off a season in which they fought back to win the division title under first year quarterback, Chad Pennington. Things were looking up, and then the front office self imploded. GM Terry Bradway and Herm Edwards wanted their contracts ripped up and redone. Owner Woody Johnson balked at the suggestion which resulted in him firing Bradway and Edwards. Johnson brought in General Manager Michael Marra who said the team needed to get younger and build around Pennington. Well, the team has gotten younger, are in good shape with the salary cap. But, Pennington has been relegated to the bench for veteran Vinny Testaverde, and the team is in search of their first victory. On this weeks radio show, GM Marra stated that the team has accomplished many of their goals, including putting themselves in a "good cap situation," and getting younger and more athletic. However, he also explained how the team is not performing up to where they though they would be. He defended his staff saying that the new staff has a total different scheme on offense and defense and it will take some time and players as well to get the system operating the way McGregor would like. The staff has been pleased with this year's draft class. Ty Warren has been fairly consistent in the middle of the D-Line while Boss Bailey got his first start this week. Second Round pick, Tyrone Calico, which many considered "too raw," to be selected where he was has contributed, including a 100-yard performance in Houston. McGregor got his big receiver in Calico which he feels will compliment Moss for many years to come. The disappointment on the offense has been the play of the O-Line. Even All-Pro Kevin Mawae seems frustrated with the mistakes the line has made. Pass protection has been weak and the running game has been non-existent. Many times Curtis Martin has been hit behind the line of scrimmage, as he has endured his toughest season, statistically. On defense the yards against numbers look respectable. However, the Jets have forced just one interception this season and have a mere 10 sacks total. All-Pro DE, John Abraham has managed 1.5 sackes, while Shaun Ellis has 0. The "D" staff is looking to be an aggressive defense that relies on pressure to force turnovers. It has been anything but that. In fact the defense's numbers look to be something that the past regime would have, not allowing the big play. With the release of Mo Lewis, and Marvin Jones the linebacker corp has struggled. Cowart has done a respectable job in the middle, and does shown improvement from week to week at his old position. Singleton, a free agent pickup, has struggled on the weak side. Navies, who was also a free agent pickup, was brought in to play the strong and weak side. Navies has played solid as a starter and in his role of reserve. Marra commented that during the off-season the team would look to add, "playmakers" to the defense. Based on Marra's comments it already appears that the Jets are looking towards next season. |

Philsaster Philadelphia, PA - The New York Jets struggles hit rock bottom yesterday as the Eagles blew out the Jets, 42-17. The Jets took the opening drive and marched the lenghth of the field, capped by a Testaverde to Curtis Martin pass from 4 yards out and the Jets taking an early 7-0 lead. But that would be the end of any celebrating for New York. McNabb and the Eagles shredded the Jets, as McNabb converted on 26 of 31 passes for 277 yards and 5 touchdowns. Wide Receiver James Thrash caught 3 of McNabb's touchdown passes. The Jets made a switch at quarterback after last weeks loss to Houston, but other than the opening drive, the offense continued to sputter. Philadelphia outgained the Jets 440 yards to 187. McGregor did not comment on the quarterback situation after the game, but stated, "We have more to worry about than the quarterback position right now." The Jets offensive line continued to look horrible, as the Jets were held to 25 yards on the ground on 18 carries. Curtis Martin is on pace for his worst season in the NFL. Martin has compiled 431 yards on 140 carries, a mere 3.1 yards per carry, over a yard less than his career average. On defense things were not much better. Philadelphia gained 164 yards on the ground, led by Duce Staley's 104. The D could not force any turnovers, and were able to get to McNabb only once all game. Injuries for the Jets included reserve defensive end, Bryan Thomas. Thomas who made his first start of the season broke his clavicle and is expected to be out 6 weeks. The Jets are home next week for the New York Giants who are winners of three straight, and are 3-1 since Kerry Collins has been back in the lineup. |

McGregor Makes Changes
Jets Seek Help at O-Line Hempstead, NY - Coach Ed McGregor spent several hours Monday morning with the Jet hierachy to discuss some changes he felt were necessary. The first change that need to be made was with the offensive line. Right Guard Brent Smith who was brought in during late free agency, and surprised many to earn the starting spot, has been a big disappointment during the regular season and was released. The Jets combed the free agent wire in search of a guard but few were available. Then while talking with Tackle, Kareem McKenzie's agent, Wade Durham about a contract extension, Durham mentioned that one of his clients, Victor Riley was hoping to land with a team before the season closed out. From there, the team was sent tapes of Riley that were viewed by the offensive line coach, and the Jets felt that Riley could help them this season, however, they asked if he would switch to right guard because they have a right tackle in McKenzie. Riley obliged and was on a plane that night to arrive in New York for his physical and sign a one year contract. Riley who was a Right Tackle for 6 years with Kansas City was released prior to the start of the regular season. Riley spent most of his career as a starting right tackle, but was replaced last season when the Chiefs dealt for William Roaf, and moved then Left Tackle, John Tait to the right side. Riley who was not happy asked to be released before the preseason. The Chiefs held on to Riley as an insurance policy only to release him when the preseason came to a close. The Jets have not indicated whether Riley will start this week or not. |

Jets Earn First! East Rutherford, NJ - The New York Jets were the home team at Giants Stadium to face their cross town rivals, the Giants. The Giants came in fresh off a 3 game winning streak while the Jets came in losing 7 straight, including last weeks humiliation at the hands of the Eagles. The Jets' Special Teams helped them jump out to a 10-0 lead after a Doug Brien field goal, and a punt block that resulted in a Shaun Ellis touchdown. However, it would not take long for the Giants offense to get going. The Jets had jumped out to a 20-7 halftime lead as they controlled the clock and took advantage of early Giant mistakes. Testaverde looked good in the first half, however, he would struggle in the third quarter, when the Jets could have put the Giants away. Collins and the Giants offense took advantage of this. Kerry Collins played flawless, he completed 30 of 41 passes for 352 yards and a touchdown, and erased the deficit and put the Giants in front midway through the 4th quarter, 28-20. The Jets, whose offense has sputtered since the second quarter finally showed some signs of life late in the fourth quarter. The Jets would get the ball with 2:04 left on their own 7 yard line. Testaverde would drive the team downfield as his receivers made some tough catches. The Jets', Curtis Martin would be on the receiving end of a 10 yard pass and bringing the Jets within 2, 28-26. Now, the Jets would need a two point conversion to force overtime. They would get that as once again, Martin came down with the ball and drove the defender into the endzone. In overtime, the Jets would score on just the second play, as Martin took a routine pass out in the flat, broke a couple of touchowns and raced 62 yards for the winning score. The Jets entered the halfway point at a dismal 1-7. |

Upset in Indy RCA Dome, Indianapolis - The New York Jets came in a dismal 1-8 against the 6-3 Colts. The Colts have not been playing well the past two weeks, as they have dropped games to Miami and Jacksonville. Manning has not looked his usual self, as he has completed just 57% of his passes. Manning, a lifetime 63% passing completion, has been struggling to find his timing as the Colts' offense has gone through many injuries this season. The Jets on the other hand have been struggling since last January when the organization went into a tailspin. Among the pieces at this point is a 1-8 team and there franchise quarterback on the bench behind 40 something Vinny Testaverde. The Jets knew they were going to have to find a way to score some points to have a chance in this one, and that is just what they did. After the Colts took an early 3-0 lead, Testaverde drove the team down the field and hit rookie fullback, Askew for an 8-yard touchdown. But the big plays were to come, on the ensuing Colts drive the Jets' D held them to a three and out. Cornerback Donnie Abraham got around the corner and blocked Hunter Smith's punt. Al Singleton scooped it up and ran it back to the Colts 19 yard line. Curtis Martin would score a couple plays later and give the Jets the lead. For the Jets it was the type of play the staff has been looking for all season. The plays would keep coming for the Jets as they would intercept Peyton Manning three times, twice by Strong Safety, Tyrone Carter. The Jets would control the ball, and make no mistakes as they put themselves in position to win a game on the road. At one point the Jets led 28-10, before they let the Colts climb back in it. However, on the Jets final drive they turned to Curtis Martin, who had an excellent day ( 29 carries, 124 yards, 3 touchdowns), to finish the drive that would give the Jets an 8 point lead. The Jets would turn away any last minute heroics by Manning and earn their second victory of the season. The Jets are home for Jacksonville next week, who has surprised many with their 6-4 start. Rookie Ty Warren played, perhaps his best game of the season, but did suffer an abdominal injury and is questionable for next weeks game. |

Jets and McKenzie Agree Hempstead, NY - The Jets and right tackle Kareem McKenzie came to terms on a long term contract that will keep McKenzie in a Jets uniform through the 2007 season. McKenzie who would have been a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the season was a priority to Marra to sign before the season ended. We wanted Kareem McKenzie to know that we wanted him here and that we were willing to offer him a long term deal to secure him financially. McKenzie was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft, and replaced then starter Ryan Young, who was left exposed during the expansion draft. McKenzie stands at 6-6" and weighs 330 pounds. He is now in his second year starting at Right Tackle. Although he has not performed on the level he was at last season, the Jets feel confident in his ability. |

Pennington Wait His Turn
Pennington Waits His Turn Hempstead, NY - Once again Chad Pennington has found himself the backup quarterback of the New York Jets, after getting off to a slow start, Pennington has been relieved by Testaverde to try and save a sinking ship. Coach McGregor insists that Pennington was replaced by the veteran Testaverde because he has dealt with tough times. McGregor said he did not want his young quarterback's confidence to be shattered during these tough times. Many are begining to speculate however, that McGregor has lost confidence in his quarterback and wonder whether the Jets will go after a quarterback in the first round of the 2004 draft. General Manager, Michael Marra stated that he has spoken with Pennington and that Chad understands the situation and is totally behind Testaverde. Losing Season
DONE!!! With last Sunday's lost to the Jaguars the Jets have secured their first losing season since 1996. During the past six seasons the Jets have compiled a record of 57-39, under four coaches, well make that three, Belichik does not count. During that six year run the Jets were in the playoffs three times. This is the earliest the Jets have been assured of not reaching the playoffs since the dismal 1-15 Rich Kotite season. Wayne Chrebet joined the Jets during their 1-15 campaign and stated that this is the lowest feeling he has had. Things are not as bleak as they may appear, the Jets will have money to spend in free agency next season and are assured of a top pick in the up and coming draft. Orchard Park, NY - Buffalo's skid hit 4 games yesterday, all without Bledsoe, as the Jets defeated the Bills, 20-3. At one point the Bills were sitting at 5-4 and in the playoff hunt. Bledsoe, although not brilliant, posted an 80.3 quarterback rating, but more importantly was the leader of a team that has played many close games throughout the season. Bledsoe was injured during the Bills victory over the Cowboys. Despite the fact that Bledsoe had suffered a stress fracture in his leg, he continued on to get the Bills over .500. Now Buffalo can begin to think about next season along with the Jets. The Jets are a team that are finding themselves late in the season. Head Coach Ed McGregor stated that he is starting to see some of the things that he had hoped to see earlier in the season. The Jets are thriving under veteran quarterback, Vinny Testaverde, who is second in the league in passing behind New York Giants' Kerry Collins. Testaverde says that he feels he is having a lot of success right now because he was able to be an observer from the sidelines to watch as the Jets learned their new offense. Pennington, although disappointed, feels he has learned a lot and is making strides while practicing with the first unit. The Jets schedule down the stretch will be a true test with first place Pittsburgh, Miami and New England. The three remaining opponents post a combined 27-12 record. There has not been any indication as to whether Pennington will get the nod or not in one of the remaining games. But many speculate that the staff wants to get a look at Pennington to see where his progress is at. |
