2003 End of the Season Review

2003 New York Jets

As our difficult season comes to a close it is one that will be remembered in New York but would like to forget. In the course of a season the Jets lost their General Manager, Terry Bradway, then their Coach, Herman Edwards, and finally most of the staff. In came new General Manager, Michael Marra who hired former Michigan Coach, Ed McGregor, who struggled in the beginning, in which the Jets began 0-7 but finished competitive going 6-3 to finish at 6-10. Rating for the staff: C-
During the season the Jets lost faith in their Franchise Quarterback, Chad Pennington who went 0-7 as a starter and posted a quarterback rating of 68.0, and handed the reins over to veteran Vinny Testaverde who went 6-3 as a starter and led the league in quarterback rating of 100.8. So, do you place the blame on the staff who took their early season lumps along with Pennington, or do you blame Pennington for the horrible start. Testaverde showed that the system does work, will he be back next season, and if so, who's job is it? Rating for the QB's: F/A
The running backs were led by Curtis Martin who carried nearly all the load. For the season Martin finished with 1157 yards rushing, and caught 80 balls for an additional 629 yards. However, the rest of the group did little to help Martin causing the Jets rushing game to finish 30th in the league in rushing. The Jets need to find Martin some help. Grades for the RB's: C
The receiving corp was solid this season, led by veteran Wayne Chrebet with 68 receptions. Moss at times looked like the replacement of Coles that the Jets envisioned, however, his production of 63 receptions for 938 yards does not make up for Coles, 80 and nearly 1200 yards a year ago. The Jets had hoped to start rookie, Tyrone Calico at the Split End position but growing pains led to him being in on three and four receiver sets primarily. He finished his rookie campaign with 43 receptions and just over 500 yards. Tight End Anthony Becht, statistically had his worst season since his rookie year as he finished with only 26 receptions. Receiver Grades: C+
The Offensive Line started off slow, like the rest of the team, but came on at the end. The Jets shuffled the line after the half way point, bringing in Victor Riley and releasing than starter, Brent Smith. Many feel this was a move that made the players realize that your job is not always safe. The line's performance as well as the team responded to this. The Jets do need some help at the Guard position as the team's pass protection did lack at times. O-Line Grade: CThe defensive line's performance during the season was a disappointment to say the least. This is an area the front office thought would flourish, however, the staters combined for 12 sacks during the season. John Abraham, alone had 13 in each of the last two seasons. The biggest disappointment came from Shaun Ellis, who finished with just 1.5 sacks. Their is talk that the Jets could move Ellis to the inside, a move that did not work for Edwards, or deal Ellis and find a new DE. Abraham came on at the end, but McGregor felt that Abraham was solid throughout the season. On the inside it is expected that Jason Ferguson played his last game with the Jets. Ferguson, who was solid against the run could become a cap casulty. Rookie Ty Warren had an up and down season, but did start 15 games, and record 39 tackles and 3 sacks. D-Line Grade: F
The Linebacker Corp struggled, as expected, the team had 2 new staters this season and Cowart was moved from the outside to the inside. Rookie Boss Bailey started the last 10 games of the season, and started strong but fizzled at the end. Bailey needs to learn the grind of an NFL Season. Al Singleton was quiet on the weak side, which could spell the end to his 1 year with the Jets. LB Grade: D
The Jets Pass Defense finished 16th in the league. Not bad for a team that had no pass rush, however, a lot of those games the opponents were ahead and able to run the ball, so do not get too excited. Strong Safety, Tyrone Carter was the star of the secondary. Carter who was signed as a free agent to play Safety or Cornerback won the starting Strong Safety position, and cashed in with 6 interceptions. However, he was not much against the run and could find himself the nickel corner next season. Free Safety Jon McGraw was a non-factor, making 0 interceptions, and getting beat on more than one occasion by deep balls. The corners, Abraham and Beasley showed their age at times, and their veteran abilities at others. While it would be nearly impossible to replace both corners, one is not out of the question. DB Grade: C-

Jets Begin Off-Season

February 4, 2004 - For General Manager Michael Marra and Head Coach Ed McGregor, the task of building for the 2004 Season begins with the conclusion of the 2003 season and a disappointing 6-10 record after a year that saw the office turn upside down with a new management and coaching staff put into place.

Currently the Jets have 43 players under contract and are about $1.8 million under that. However, the Jets need that money to sign their future draftees, so if the Jets want to upgrade any position through free agency they will need to cut and re-work some salaries. The Jets franchise value has been rated the following compared to the rest of the league:

Code:
Team Stadium Roster Support Economy Franchise Value Philadelphia 81 77 92 51 $580,640,000 Washington 88 45 92 53 $556,320,000 Pittsburgh 81 64 96 43 $554,800,000 Dallas 88 32 90 61 $545,680,000 Denver 84 42 96 51 $542,640,000 New England 62 58 99 48 $500,080,000 San Francisco 57 74 95 39 $489,440,000 Minnesota 57 60 90 51 $478,800,000 Cleveland 70 43 92 36 $472,720,000 Tampa Bay 57 56 99 36 $463,600,000 Carolina 57 55 83 51 $460,560,000 New York G 28 65 96 68 $433,200,000 Baltimore 73 1 88 47 $428,640,000 Kansas City 37 69 95 43 $427,120,000 Seattle 30 88 78 48 $416,480,000 **New York J 27 84 80 55 $414,960,000 Miami 19 100 99 35 $413,440,000 Detroit 67 1 82 52 $408,880,000 Tennessee 39 48 99 40 $402,800,000 Green Bay 27 71 96 39 $395,200,000 Buffalo 39 61 78 42 $393,680,000 Chicago 30 57 82 59 $392,160,000 San Diego 51 44 71 36 $384,560,000 Indianapolis 28 51 88 40 $368,600,000 Atlanta 28 52 73 53 $367,840,000 Houston 26 56 78 45 $365,560,000 Oakland 30 21 80 50 $350,360,000 Cincinnati 39 10 75 38 $342,760,000 St. Louis 15 37 88 43 $340,480,000 Arizona 44 12 42 43 $330,600,000 Jacksonville 24 18 79 40 $330,600,000 New Orleans 7 38 79 26 $309,320,000

The franchise value is on the rise and it is expected that the Franchise will look to make a stadium proposal for the upper west side that will include a retractable roof with a grass playing field and a capacity of about 70,000 with 200 luxury boxes or so. It is estimated that the cost will be around $600 million. The Jets are expected to contribute approximately 25% with the rest of the funds coming from the tax payers.

Jets Announce Final Plans for Stadium

Jets Stadium?

The New York Jets have announced the final plans for their 70,000 seat stadium to be constructed on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The Stadium is to be constructed by a top quality construction firm at an estimated cost of $500 million. It is believed that the Jets' Organization will contribute $125 million while the rest will be asked for during a public vote.

The plans include a retractable roof with a grass playing field. Although many Jet officials have said they do not plan on using the roof and altering the games because of the weather, they feel that the retractable roof will make the plans more appealing to the public for the use of other events besides the minimum of ten football games.

The Stadium will include many features that do not exist in their current stadium including 150 luxury suites and 10,000 club seats, sit down restaurants and entertainment along with methods of mass transportation due to the difficulties it could be to travel in New York City.

The Vote is scheduled soon.

Coaching Changes

Coaching Changes around the NFL

New York Giants fired Head Coach Norman Fiore and hired Buddy Martin. Fiore led the Giants to an 11-7 record and the NFC East Crown. Martin is a 64 year veteran who did not coach last season. Martin is known as an excellent motivator and has excellent skills at developing offensive and defensive game plans, a true tactician is a safe description.

San Francisco fired Head Coach Ricky Williams and brought in Ted Theriot from Tennessee, who had a falling out with the Titans' front office. Williams led the 49ers to a 12-6 record and the Conference Championship. Many around the Bay Area feel that Williams was let go because the Niners had a crack at Theriot who led the Titans to the AFC Crown and the Super Bowl berth.

Tennessee did the smart thing and hired a proven coach in Norman Fiore. Fiore kept his Giants in the hunt throughout the begininning of the season, despite losing their starting QB for the first half of the year. Fiore is a displine style coach, something that Theriot was not. It will be interesting to see how the Titans respond.

Coordinator Positions

Following the firing of Williams, San Francisco Defensive Coordinator, Jason Floyd left the bay area and signed with Miami after the Dolphins Burdette left for more money in Philadelphia.

Miami lost their own Defensive Coordinator, Phillip Burdette in a bidding war to Philadelphia. Philadelphia desperatly wants to get back to the winnning ways they have become accostomed to after a disappointing 5-11 season.

To replace Defensive Coordinator Jason Floyd, San Francisco signed Butch Fuentes away from Oakland. Head Coach Theriot feels more comfortable with the younger Fuentes as opposed to the veteran Jason Floyd and his loyalty towards Williams.

Oakland brings in Donovan Duncan to run the Silver and Black Defense. Duncan is unproven in his NFL coaching career.

Pittsburgh did not waste any time when all the coaching positions were filled in going after former San Francisco coach, Ricky Williams. Williams will run the team's Defense for the retried Ralph Schader.

2004 Off-Season Prep

Hempstead, NY - The Jets began making some of the difficult decisions necessary to give the team some room to begin their off-season changes. The Jets released four veterans, some a bit of a surprise while others came as expected.
The Jets let go of guard Dave Szott. Szott, 37 years old was scheduled to make approximately $1.7 million this season. Szott, unsure if he wanted to play or not this season, met with the staff and gracefully accepted his release.
The other expected release was safety, Sam Garnes. Garnes,29, played in just 74 plays this past season at the safety position. The release of Garnes will save the Jets $880,000. The hard hitting Garnes should find a role with a team as a reserve safety and special teamer. The Jets would have liked to kept Garnes as their gunner on special teams, but are desperate for cap space.
Cornerback Donnie Abraham was released, speculation was that Beasley would be the one out, although Beasley's status is still uncertain. Abraham started all 16 games last season, and recorded 2 interceptions, returning one back for a touchdown. The release of Abraham frees up nearly $3.4 million this season. Penciled in to replace Abraham is Jacoby Shepherd. Shepherd, 24, was a second round pick of the St Louis Rams in 2001. Shepherd has some height and can be a cover type corner.
The Jets released their second longest tenured Jet, Ray Mickens, age 31. Mickens joined the team in 1996 as a 3rd round draft selection. Mickens height was always a concern to coaches, however, they could not ignore his cover skills. Mickens primarily played as a nickelback for the Jets and recorded an interception this season. Mickens release will free up approximately $1.1 million.
Other Jets that could be released after the first free agency period include Vinny Testaverde, LB Alshermond Singleton and FB Jerald Sowell.

Pre Free Agency

Hempstead, NY - The Jets have cleared some room on their roster and now have currently 39 players signed as they set themselves for free agency. Between free agency and the draft, General Manager Michael Marra feel they need to address the following areas to improve from their 6-10 season a year ago.

The team is unsure as to whether Calico is ready to be an everydown receiver and might look in to bringing in a veteran SE to be a starter and move Chrebet to the FL2 spot behind Moss.

The Jets need to find to new guards to start right away, with the release of Szott and Victor Riley testing the free agent market the Jets need to address this area.

A punter is needed to replace Dan Stryzinski. Stryzinski averaged a mere 37.4 yards per punt last season.

At Defensive Tackle, McGlockton will sign elsewhere, his asking price is too high. So, they need a suitable backup for second year player Ty Warren. Warren is not that good at applying pressure on the quarterback, but is a good run stopper. The same holds true for Ferguson. Harper did a nice job coming in for Ferguson on passing down, but if the Jets can afford one to do the same for Warren they will have all the pieces in place with the DL.

The Jets need to find a starting WLB. Al Singleton just is not good enough. Singleton is nice backup and special teams player. If a suitable SLB or MLB is available, Cowart and Bailey are flexible enough to move to the SLB and WLB respectively.

In the secondary, the release of Abraham means that the Jets will be starting the untested Shepherd or looking for someone else to play the LCB position. It looks as though Beasley will be with the team another season as the starter on the the right side.

Safety Tyrone Carter had a great season playing the Strong Safety position. But, the Jets feel he is better suited to be the Free Safety or Nickle Corner. The team has been unimpressed with McGraw and Pagel thus far, and both could find themselves as the backup SS and FS.

Free Agent Budget

The Jets are currently $8.5 million under the salary cap and have $4.8 million to spend for new players. However, based on the fact that Pennington, Becht, Ellis and Abraham are in the last year of their contract we need to keep some money free for them. So, we have set a budget of $2.5 million for Free Agency. We have decided to try and target a Guard, Punter and Cornerback with that money.

Based on players asking price our first option at Guard that we will bid on is Travis Claridge. Claridge has spent the past four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and plays LG. He only allowed four sacks last season and on running plays had a blocking percentage of 24.3.

The second area we look to address is punter. We feel Hunter Smith could be a nice addition for us. Smith is known as a punter with great hang time, and he averaged 40.0 yards per punt. Smith was also the holder for the Indianpolis Colts last season. Smith has spent the previous five seasons with Indianpolis.

The third player we are targeting is at the corner position. Although this position has tremendous talent available the asking prices are way too high for one of the top corners. Last season we lacked playermakers on D, and if we can land Alex Molden he would bring that ability to us. Molden spent his first seven seasons with New Orleans then played for Detroit last season. Molden picked off 7 balls last season and could be a key addition at Left Cornerback.

Free Agency Week 1

Week 1 Signees

Orlando Pace - Pace signed a 4 year $40.3 million contract with New Orleans. Arizona and Jacksonville offered more, but Arizona was a non-playoff team, and New Orleans is a tad closer to his home than Jacksonville.

Warren Sapp- Sapp's days in Tampa are over as Sapp signs with the Browns for 3 years, $15.28 million. Sapp only recorded 3 sacks last season but played the run extremely effective. The addition of Sapp with DE's Brown and Lang (each 11 sacks), and DT Gerard Warren makes the Brownies a force with their DL.

Randall Godfrey - Godfrey left Seattle for Tampa Bay. Godfrey signed a deal for 3 years and $10.74 million. Godfrey is an instant upgrade over MLB Nate Webster.

Marcus Washington - The SLB left the Colts for division rivals, the Jaguars. Washington signed for 3 years $9.85 million. Washington was an All-League 1st Teamer last season as he compiled 129 solo tackles.

Ian Gold - Gold turned down Detroit and Washington to continue to play WLB for the Broncos. Gold signed for 4 years $14.69 million.

Carlos Emmons - Emmons left Philly for Mo-Town and the Lions. Emmons signed a 4 years $12.17 million contract. Emmons hopes to help the Lions improve on last season's 7-9 record.

Wayne Gandy - The Saints gain Pace but lose OT, Wayne Gandy to the Buffalo Bills. The Saints had tried to keep Gandy during the season, but when contract talks broke down, Gandy used Free Agency to earn a deal of $5.16 million in Buffalo.

Other Notable Signings:
Victor Green signed with Washington for $9.13 million over 4 season leaving New Orleans.
Keith Mitchell signed a $2.84 million deal over 3 years with Arizona leaving Jacksonville.

Jets Land Smith

Hempstead, NY - The Jets announced today that they have signed punter, Hunter Smith to a 3 years, $2.89 million contract. Smith enters his sixth season in the NFL. Smith's first five seasons were spent in Indianapolis after Smith was drafted in the 7th round of the 1999 draft out of New Orleans. Smith is a punter who excels in hang time, allowing the coverage team to get downfield and make plays.

Free Agency Week 2

Champ Bailey - Bailey resigned with the Redskins after being sought after by Carolina, Kansas City, Minnesota and Philadelphia. The deal for one of this season's top free agents is $53.96 million over six seasons. Bailey was an All-League 1st Team Cornerback with 8 interceptions.

Chris McAllister - Baltimore was able to retain McAllister. McAllister signed a deal worth $26.26 million over 5 years. McAllister's PDPct was 19.5 with two interceptions.

Marco Coleman - Baltimore continues to be aggressive in the early stages of free agency as they sign Coleman to a 2 year deal worth $14.63 million. The 34-year old Coleman had 16 sacks last season for Philadelphia.

Adam Timmerman - 32 year old Adam Timmerman remains a Ram, signing a deal for 3 years, $12.9 million. Timmerman was sought after by Atlanta, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Houston. All were offering more to Timmerman. Timmerman was an All League 1st Team Guard this past season.

Damien Woody - Woody signed a 3 years, $11.67 million deal with Baltimore. Woody, a 1st round draft choice in 1999 of New England, played his entire 5 years with the Patriots.

Keion Carpenter - Carpenter left the Falcons for the two time defending Super Bowl Champions, Tampa Bay. Carpenter signed a 4 year deal worth $11.7 million. Carpenter turned down three year deals from Baltimore, Denver, Minnesota and Houston. Carpenter a Free Safety will now be lined up next to the hard hitting, John Lynch.

Ted Washington - the big run stuffer left New England after not being offered a contract to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles and play along side Corey Simon. Washington signed for $12.88 million over 3 years. The 36-year old Washington turned down a similar offer from Denver.

Spencer Folau - The big Right Tackle chose to stay with the team that gave him a chance when he was undrafted 5 years ago. Folau passed up on deals that were more money from Minnesota and Houston and signed with the Saints for $10.02 million over 3 years.

Michael Myers - Baltimore continues to upgrade their team with the signing of Myers. Myers a DT with Dallas last six seasons received a deal worth $13.82 million over 5 years.

Other notable signings:

Russell Davis, DT, 2 years $1.36 million with Minnesota. Davis joins his 3rd NFL team in 6 seasons.

Fred Robbins, DT, 2 years, $1.86 million. Dallas gets a suitable replacement, from the Rams, for Myers at less cost.

Dante' Hall, WR, signed a 1 year deal with Pittsburgh for $710,000 after Kansas City did not offer him a deal.

Jets Extend Pennington's Contract

Jets QB Pennington signs extension By BARRY WILNER Associated Press

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Chad Pennington agreed to a $19 million, five-year contract extension with the New York Jets on Wednesday that includes $6 million in guaranteed money. A source familiar with the negotiations, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that Pennington will average $3.7million a year.

Pennington had set a deadline of the end of the preseason, for a new deal to be finalized. He did not want negotiations to stretch into the season, nor did the Jets, who didn't want to chance losing him as a free agent.

Pennington, the 18th overall pick in the 2000 draft, has been the Jets' starter in only 23 games. He comes off an inconsistent season that saw him lose the first seven games, but in 2002 he replaced Vinny Testaverde as the starter a month into the schedule and led the Jets to the AFC East title. He also led the NFL in passing efficiency that season with a 104.2 rating, 3,120 yards, 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

"You're not looking at a team that thinks, or even knows, we were 6-10 last year," Pennington said. "We've got an element of surprise in us. I don't know what we're capable of, but I know we have a chance. I feel like we have an opportunity to do something. There's a different feeling on and off the field, a different attitude, a different mind-set. There's a different focus, a hunger. There's a new energy about us."

Defensive ends John Abraham and Shaun Ellis and tight end Anthony Becht, all first-round draft picks in 2000 along with Pennington, are in their final contract years. So is running back LaMont Jordan.

Pennington instructed Condon to make the new contract as salary cap friendly as possible."Tom knows how I feel about being a team player so we can keep players," Pennington said.Still, with running back Curtis Martin, center Kevin Mawae and Pennington taking up huge chunks of the salary cap - and with receiver Santana Moss also looking for a new deal - keeping their players will be difficult for the Jets.

Pennington sat for his first two pro seasons behind Testaverde. When the Jets struggled early in the 2002 season, ex-coach Herman Edward turned to Pennington, making "one of the toughest decisions of my career."But Pennington made Edwards look smart as the Jets went from 1-4 and 2-5 to 9-7, then beat Indianapolis in the playoffs before losing at Oakland. Pennington showed tremendous accuracy, poise and leadership.

"Chad has all the characteristics of a true role model," said Coach McGregor. "He has great command and presence on the football field and is a team leader. He has a real passion to play football and is a quality person."Jets fans need to know one thing about Chad Pennington; he'll do whatever it takes to lead this team to a championship."

Added Martin:"That's what you look for in a quarterback, even a young guy like Chad. You look to see how they lead your team. Chad is a leader."A very rich leader.

Hempstead, NY - The New York Jets have added a piece to the offensive line that they desperately needed, Travis Claridge. Claridge has spent the past four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and plays LG. He only allowed four sacks last season and on running plays had a blocking percentage of 24.3.

Claridge signed a deal for 3 years, $3.8 million. Claridge, who arrived yesterday to finalize the deal, is scheduled to be announced officially later today, along with punter, Hunter Smith.

Chad Pennington and Curtis Martin were at the complex yesterday to welcome Claridge after he and his agent finalized the deal with the Jets' front office. Martin added, "It is great to see that the organization has found someone with the claibre of Travis Claridge to add to our team. I look forward to working with him this season."

The Jets are now focusing their attention on landing play maker corner, Alex Molden of Detroit.

Shawn Springs, CB- Springs left Seattle to join Atlanta for a contact of $26.70 million over the next 6 seasons. Springs, 29, is entering his 8th season. Willie Williams, CB – Williams followed Springs out of Seattle toAtlanta for a 2 year deal worth $8.84 million. Williams, 34, enjoyed a solid season with the Seahawks last season.

Matt Stover, K – Stover left Baltimore for division rival Pittsburgh and $5.03 million over the next 3 years. Stover connected on 16 of 19 field goals last season. Jets Get Help At Corner

Jets Sign Molden

Hempstead, NY - The New York Jets have found help at Cornerback. After the release of Donnie Abraham the Jets found themselves looking for a cornerback. The Jets found that in 8 year veteran Alex Molden. Molden signed a 2 year contract worth $1.85 million.

Molden brings the ability to make the big play, something the Jets desperatly needed last season. Molden intercepted seven passes last season, forced four fumbles and recovered a fumble. The 5'10" Molden possesses the ability to play more man-to-man defense than Abraham and is good against the run as well.

The Jets would have liked to take a shot at some of the elite corners that were available but are limited to what they can do with their current salary cap situation. The Jets feel they have upgraded the position, and that McGregor is getting more of the type of players that fits his style of play.

With the draft approaching shortly, it is safe to assume that the Jets will still look for help at the corner position. It is believed that the Front Office is high on corners Deagelo Hall, Will Poole and Dana McAllister.

Week 9

Week 9 Free Agency

Antoine Winfield, CB – The Chiefs took a step in the right direction in improving their pass defense when they signed Winfield to a 5 year deal worth $20.32 million. Winfield played the previous five seasons with the Bills. And although he did not have an interception last season, Winfield is a solid man defender. The signing of Winfield means that the Chiefs now have only two cornerbacks on their roster.

Chris Gray, G – Gray re-signed with the Seahawks this week for 3 years and $6.43 million. Gray started all 16 games last year at right guard. Gray turned down deals from Atlanta and Detroit. He is entering his 12th season.

William Henderson, FB – Henderson is leaving Green Bay after nine seasons to play for Denver. Henderson signed a deal for 3 years and $3.27 million. Henderson is know as an excellent blocker and brings experience to help Plummer and Portis.

Derrick Rodgers, LB – Rodgers left New Orleans for division rival Atlanta. The 8 year veteran signed a deal for $2.38 million over the next 3 seasons. Rodgers had 59 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the Saints last season.

Ndukwe Kalu, DE – The often-injured Kalu resigned with the Rams for 2 years and $2.18 million. Kalu had 3 sacks in 9 games last season. Kalu is known as a pass rushing specialists.

Kendall Gammon, C – The Ravens add depth at the center position with the signing of Gammon. Gammon leaves Kansas City for 2 years and $2.24 million.

Keenan McCardell, WR – McCardell leaves the world champs for Arizona. McCardell signed for 2 years and $2.16 million. McCardell pairs up with last years Rookies, Johnson and Bolding. Now Arizona needs to find a quarterback. I do not think they will go to far with Gus Walsh.

Barry Gardner, LB – Gardner leaves Cleveland for New Orleans. Gardner signed a 3 year deal for $2.03 million. It is expected that Gardner will start on the weak side for the Saints.

Other Signings:
Brandon Stokely, WR – leaves Indianapolis for Denver, 2 years, $1.23 million.

Blake Brockermeyer, T – Brockermeyer leaves Denver for Jacksonville. He signed a deal worth $2.97 million over the next two seasons. Brockermeyer is entering his 10th season, he has been a consistent left tackle since he was drafted in the first round of the 1995 draft by the Carolina Panthers.

Northcutt will get the chance to start at split end for the Raiders.

Morris who played in just 9 games last season has been a starter since being drafted in the first round of the 2000 draft by the Colts. Morris signed a 2 year, $1.37 million deal.

Jets Prepare for 2004 Draft

Jets Ready!

Hempstead - The Jets front office and staff has been working frantically to figure out who they will select for this weekends draft. The Jets have the 10th overall selection, and many believe they will stay there and not move up or down. The Jets are in need of help at the Guard position, which they did address during free agency with the signing of Travis Claridge but, still need another starter, they could also use help at the linebacker position and some depth to the defensive backs. The siging of CB Alex Molden from Detroit should help the Jets this season, however, the Jets are still in need of help at the Safety position and the nickel corner position.

This years draft should give the Jets the opportunity to address their needs. With the tenth overall selection the Jets will have some options. Perhaps their best option with the 10th pick will be at corner, or offensive tackle.

The Jets wish list looks like this:
1. Shawn Andrew, OT - He is the highest rated player on the board. Who would not choose a franchise left tackle. The former Razorback, did 36 repetions on the bench, scored high on the intelligence tests and has exceptional footwork. Expected to go number one to Chicago.
2. DeAngelo Hall, CB - Hall has it all. He is rated in the top-5 for every cornerback among this year's draft class. He ran a 4.46 in the 40, and blew everyone away with his agility. The Jets would have to move up to get Hall, the price might be too steep. There is depth at the corner position.
3. Tommie Harris, DT - This Sooner is a stud in the middle. Harris did 34 repetions on the bench, second only to Shawn Andrews. Although is play diagnosis is low, Harris makes up for it with his ability.
4. Larry Fitzgerald, WR - Fitzgerald is a top-5 on the board, and a position the Jets do not need at this time, however, Moss has still not been the big receiver the Jets envisioned when they picked him a few years back. Calico will be steady, but does not appear to be the pure number one receiver. So, Fitzgerald could be a fit. If the Jets go with best available, this could be a possibility, but do not expect the Jets to make a play on Fitzgerald.
5. Jeremy LeSuer, CB - LeSuer is a solid corner, who is a notch below Hall, but a step ahead of the rest. LeSuer is an excellent all around defender. He can play the run, man to man, zone and bump and run. LeSuer will be a solid corner in the NFL. LeSuer is more of a realistic pickup for the Jets.
6. Jonathan Vilma- Vilma is a fierce ILB, who can play the run and the pass. Vilma posses the speed and agility to play outside as well. He is rated above all the linebackers in this year's class.
7. DJ Williams - Williams is an outside linebacker with a defensive backs ability. Williams ran the 40 in 4.5 and did the agility in 7.0. He is exceptional against the run and can rush the passer as well. The knock on Williams is his pass coverage skills and his tackling. Williams if the above six are not available the Jets may trade down to get Williams.
Other trade down possibilities include:
Safeties Matt Ware and Sean Taylor, Corners Bruce Thornton, Will Poole and Dana McAllister.

2004 NFL Draft - First Round

2004 NFL Draft
Round 1

1. Chicago Bears – Shawn Andrews, LT, Arkansas (24 current, 78 potential) The Bears get the highest rated player in the draft, and their offensive tackle to protect Kyle Boller’s blind side for the next ten years.
2. Houston Texans – DeAngelo Hall, CB, Virginia Tech (31, 72) The Texans get the highest rated corner of the draft. Hall will not have the pressure of starting right away behind Glenn and Coleman, so he can be eased into the NFL setting. Hall is a terrific athlete, and the Texans need to get the ball in his hands on special teams.
3. Cleveland Browns – Tommie Harris, RDT, Oklahoma (30, 69) The Browns go with the 3rd highest rated player on the board in Harris. Harris is an excellent talent who needs to learn how to diagnose plays. He will backup Warren Sapp this season.
4. Philadelphia Eagles – Kevin Jones, RB, Virginia Tech (45, 64) The first surprise of the draft saw the Eagles pass on Larry Fitzgerald and draft Jones here. The Eagles lack any receivers, and currently have Staley to run the ball.
5. Carolina Panthers – Nat Dorsey, RT, Georgia (31, 58) Carolina made a safe pick here. Last year the team took Jordan Gross who had a fine season at RT. Dorsey is naturally a RT and will probably be a reserve T this season. Look for Gross to make the move to the left side next year, and Dorsey to be the future starting RT.
6. Buffalo Bills - Marquise Hill, RDE, Louisiana State (35, 56) Buffalo needed help at DE, and they got it in Hill. Hill was a better fit than Udeze for Buffalo here. Hill has the build to be a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 DE.
7. Arizona Cardinals - Larry Fitzgerald, FL, Pittsburgh (33, 68) Arizona goes with the best available player here. They are deep at WR, but how do you pass a player like this up. Fitzgerald can fly (4.3 40) and along side the NFL’s fastest man, Bryant Johnson (last year’s #1 pick), the Cards have some big play at the wideout position. Now they need someone to get it to them.
8. Minnesota Vikings – Jeremy LeSuer, LCB, Michigan (35, 62) Minnesota needed a CB, and they got one here. The second highest rated corner on most boards. LeSuer is a notch below Hall, but he is clearly the 2nd best corner in the draft.
9. Atlanta Falcons – Matt Ware, FS, UCLA (29, 66) Atlanta went with need as well, and drafted the big, athletic corner in Ware. Ware is excellent against the run and a solid cover man, a rarity at the safety position.
10. New York Jets – Jonathan Vilma, MLB, Miami (38, 60) The Jets pressing need was OLB, however, they got the best LB of the draft in MLB Jonathan Vilma. Vilma is smart and athletic, he will see time this season in the middle, weak and strong side.
11. Dallas Cowboys – Kenechi Udeze, RDE, Southern Cal (31, 59) Dallas signed the All-Pro DE, Rob Burnett this season, what better than Udeze to learn from him. Udeze will get time at both the righ and left side this season, and should be a starter by his second year.
12. Detroit Lions – Bruce Thornton, RCB, Georgia (29, 59) Detroit needed a RB or CB here. They thought that Kevin Jones would be available, but he went earlier. Instead Detroit gets the 3rd or 4th rated corner of the draft.
13. Kansas City Chiefs – Mathias Kiwanuka, LDE, Boston College (30, 56) Kansas City needed an ILB or DE here, with Vilma gone the Chiefs opted for Kiwanuka over ILB Duffy or OLB Williams. Kiwanuka is an excellent pass rusher, but will take time to learn how to play the run at this level.
14. Cincinnati Bengals – Regis Crawford, LG, Arizona State (18, 62) Cincinnati went strictly with need here in Crawford. Crawford is the highest rated guard in the draft, but most teams had him going in the later part of the first round.
15. Baltimore Ravens – Randy Starks, LDT, Maryland (31, 64) Baltimore was hoping that Ware would still be on the board here, but went with best available when he was not. Starks can do it all and will quickly make an impact for the Ravens.
16. Green Bay Packers – Greg Jones, RB, Florida State (44, 63) This is another move that makes little sense. The Packers are desperate for help at OLB, and DJ Williams is sitting there for the taking. Instead they get the power running back of Greg Jones to play behind Ahman Green.
17. Seattle Seahawks – Ahmad Carroll, LCB, Arkansas (28, 62) Seattle needed help at corner and they got that in Carroll. Carrolll may not be the best man cover corner, however, in the right system this guy will be a player.
18. San Diego Chargers – Tony Pape, LT, Michigan (31, 57) San Diego was hoping that Carroll or Thornton would have been here, but make a nice selection in LT Tony Pape. Left tackles are hard to come by, and the Chargers now have one.
19. Washington Redskins – Raheem Orr, RDE, Rutgers (18, 49) This was without a doubt the biggest duh move. Yes, the Redskins needed help at DE, but this kid Orr from Rutgers is not the answer. Orr looks like he can be a decent pass rusher in the future, but has a lot of work to do. Perhaps the better move here would have been to go with safety Jim Leonhard or Sean Taylor.
20. Indianapolis Colts – DJ Williams, SLB, Miami (31, 58) Love the pick here, Williams slides down a little, and the Colts get perhaps the best available player and fit a need as well.
21. Pittsburgh Steelers – Will Poole, LCB, Southern Cal (21, 61) This pick was not as surprising of a pick as you might think. Yes, the Steelers need a QB and Eakin or Manning would have made more sense. However, Poole is a play maker, and this team will be carried by its defense this year.
22. Houston Texans (via NY Giants) – Dwan Edwards, RDT, Oregon State (28, 56) In perhaps a bit of a surprise move, the Giants sent their #1 to Houston for NT, Seth Payne. Houston than used the pick on run stuffer, Dwan Edwards.
23. New Orleans Saints – Douglas Goodwin, NT, Boston College (28, 51) The Saints had eyed up Edwards here but get perhaps a better all around DT in Douglas Goodwin. The Saints were hoping DE here, but you see how that worked out.
24. Oakland Raiders – Kevin Eakin, QB, Fordham (16, 65) Oakland needs a QB in the future, and they appear to have got it. Although Eakin comes from a small college, he has wowed scouts with his intelligence and accuracy. Eakin will have some growing pains, but rest assure this kid will be effective in a ball controlled offense.
25. New England Patriots – Mewelde Moore, RB, Tulane (42, 58) The Pats needed help at RB, and got one in Moore. Moore can run ok between the tackles or outside, however, he is the best receiving back in this year’s draft.
26. St. Louis Rams – Chris Snee, LG, Boston College (31, 54) St. Louis was hoping for Will Poole to be here, but when he was not, they went with their starting left guard of the future in Chris Snee.
27. San Francisco 49ers – Dunta Robinson, LCB, South Carolina (31, 54) The Niners were hoping for Jones or Moore to be here to replace Garrison Hearst. The Niners get a corner to play opposite Plummer and slow down some of these NFC West wide outs.
28. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jeb Terry, LG, North Carolina (20, 59) Jacksonville went with need here. Terry is a bit of a work in progress. But, Terry possesses all the necessary tools to be a starter at this level.
29. Miami Dolphins – Vince Wilfork, LDT, Miami (27, 56) With the exception of Jason Taylor, the Dolphins have no D-Line this season. Wilfork will be expected to come right in and start. Wilfork is a wide player who can play the run.
30. Denver Broncos – Jim Leonhard, SS, Wisconsin (31, 60) Denver was excited when they saw that Leonhard was available here. Leonhard will come in and get a chance to play right away.
31. Tennessee Titans – Antwan Odom, LDE, Alabama (28, 42) The Titans went with need here, and came away with Antwan Odom. This is a spot where the Titans could have gotten some help for McNair, with TE Ben Watson available or wideouts Darrius Watts or Roy Williams.
32. Tampa Bay Buccanears – Tatum Bell, RB, Oklahoma State (42, 51) The Bucs need some help on the OL, and perhaps center Scott Wells or project tackle Kelly Butler would have been a better pick. But, the Bucs add some explosion to their aging offense in Bell.

Jets Draft Picks

New York Jets
2004 Draft Picks

First Round – Pick Ten
Jonathan Vilma, MLB, 6’2” 225 pounds, Miami, Florida
Vilma was the leading tackler for the Hurricanes the last two seasons. He will see time at all three positions and special teams this season. Vilma scored very high on the Solecismic Test and was timed as one of the quickest and strongest ILB in the draft.

Second Round – Pick Three
Dana McAllister, CB, 6’0” 208 pounds, Colorado
The Jets liked McAllister so much that they considered him with their first pick. In order to move up 7 spots in the second round the Jets traded their second and fourth round picks. McAllister is an excellent cover man who can make the interception. McAllister will work behind Molden and battle Jacoby Shepherd for the nickel position.

Third Round – Pick Ten
Etric Pruitt, SS, 6’0” 195 pounds, Southern Mississippi
Pruitt will play on special teams and backup Tyrone Carter. Pruitt plays the run and pass well, however, he needs to gain experience to recognize plays and react at this level. Pruitt is also an excellent return man where he can possibly earn some chances behind Morton and Moss.

Fifth Round – Pick Ten
Quinn Christensen, G, 6’6” 300 pounds, Brigham Young
The Jets are impressed with Christensen’s strength and instincts. Christensen will be 24 this season. It is expected that the Jets will sign a veteran to play right guard this year. However, the Jets are hopeful they found a possible starter of the future here.

Sixth Round – Pick Ten
Paul Harker, G, 6’3” 299 pounds, Michigan State
The Jets look to add depth to the left side of the line with Harker. Harker who gained plenty of experience at Michigan State is more than half way developed being a 4-year starter for the Spartans. Harker will compete with Jonathan Goodwin for the left guard backup position.

Seventh Round – Pick Ten
Nathaniel Adibi, DE, 6’3” 255 pounds, Virginia
Adibi was only a 2-year starter for the Cavaliers, but he was one of the most athletic of all the defensive ends in the draft. With excellent speed, good quickness, and strength he is reminiscent of a younger John Abraham. The Jets only hope he can achieve some of Abraham’s success.

Late Free Agency

Following the 2004 Draft the Jets currently have 43 players signed, and are $8.3 million under the cap. There are several areas of the roster that the team needs to address.

We need to sign two wide receivers, a backup center, a starting right guard, and one to two linebackers.

Players we are looking at to resign are center JP Machado, linebacker Jason Glenn, wide receiver Jonathan Carter. Players from the free agent market include, wide receivers David Terrell and Corey Bradford, center Brad Meester, tackles Todd Wade or Aaron Gibson (and move them to guard), and linebackers, Nail Diggs and Mike Maslowski.

Rookie Free agents we are looking at include: signing a rookie quarterback to compete with Brooks Bollinger for the third string position. Those quarterbacks include Matt Schaub, Matt Mauk, and John Navarre. Wide Receivers, Michael Clayton, Michael Jenkins, Jerricho Cotchery and Rashaun Woods. Linebackers Roderick Royal and safeties Perry Hudson and Darrell Azzolini.

Jets to release Testaverde

Report: Jets to release Testaverde

NEW YORK (AP) — Quarterback Vinny Testaverde will be cut by the New York Jets, the Daily News reported Thursday.
The 40-year-old veteran will be released after June 1 to lessen the salary cap hit the team takes, but the announcement could come as soon as Friday, the newspaper reported, citing an unidentified NFL source.
Jets General Manager, Michael Marra had no comment on the report. A call by the Associated Press to Testaverde's agent, Duane Horineck, was not immediately returned.
New York is grooming second-year quarterback Brooks Bollinger as a backup to Chad Pennington. If Bollinger does not appear ready the team will sign a veteran at a lesser price than Testaverde. Testaverde, a Heisman Trophy winner who has played 17 NFL seasons and was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 1987, doesn't want to be a third-stringer, but has indicated he still wants to play.
Either way, the Daily News said, Testaverde's six-year stint with the Jets is over.
Testaverde lost his starting job to Pennington early in the 2002 season, and Pennington led the Jets from a 2-5 start into the playoffs. Testaverde reassumed the starting position last season when the Jets began 0-7 under Pennington. Testaverde went 6-3 as the Jets starter and led the NFL in quarterback efficiency.
In 1998, Testaverde made the Pro Bowl and guided the Jets to the AFC title game. But he tore his Achilles' tendon in the first game of the next season.
In 2001, Testaverde led the Jets to a 10-6 record and a wild-card playoff berth.

Adding to the Roster

The Jets have signed three rookie free agents to compete for spots on the roster.

John Navarre, QB, Michigan - The big quarterback played under Ed McGregor at Michigan University. Navarre is a smart quarterback who can read the defense, direct the two minute offense and sense the rush. His accuracy is a little erractic which caused Navarre the shot at being drafted.

Jerricho Cotchery, WR, North Carolina State - Cotchery 40 yard times were lacking along with his pass routes. He could catch on with the team if he can beat out Jonathan Carter. Cotchery is a long shot.

Roderick Royal, LB, McNeese State - Royal was a standout at the small school, but his predraft workouts and small school hurt Royal's chance of being drafted. Royal does have a shot if he can excel on special teams.

Late Free Agency

The Jets have completed their roster for the start of training camp. The Jets are going to go into camp with 56 players on their roster competing for 53 spots.

Late Free Agency signings include:
J.P. Machado, C - Machado joined the Jets in 1999 when he was selected in the 6th round out of Illinois. Machado has been reliable behind Mawae. Machado will continue to handle the long snapping responsibilities.

Tim Rattay, QB - signed from San Francisco, Rattay was drafted in the 7th round of the 2000 draft by the 49ers. Rattay has thrown just 50 passes in the NFL behind Garcia in San Francisco. The Jets are hopeful he can become the team's second string quarterback. Rattay works the short passes well and has the quick release to avoid the sack.

David Terrell, WR - The Bears released Terrell to get out from under his big contract. The Jets signed Terrell to be another big guy to go along with Calico and the smaller Chrebet and Moss. Terrell will primarily play the SE position behind either Calico or Chrebet. Terrell caught 53 passes last season for 573 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Jonathan Carter, WR - The Jets chose to resign Carter for a second season. Carter caught only 1 pass last season, but does have the ability to provide the big play.
