Brian Quinn (NBA 2K15 MyCareer)
As a 6'4" 189 pound point guard from Lafayette College, I was expected to be a late first/early second round pick. I sit watching the NBA Draft as names are called, hoping someone takes a chance on me, as the last pick is called, my name does not. I go undrafted.
What to do from here? My agent tells me maybe it is better that I went undrafted where I can latch on to a team that isn't a perennial contender where I would rot on the bench. He also reminds me that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and made everyone pay for that decision. The next day my agent tells me a few teams are interested in giving me a tryout, and if I perform well I could get a 10 day contract. The teams have varying levels of interest, based on their current point guard situation, as well as my performance in the tryout. The teams with the highest amount of interest seem to be the Orlando Magic, Utah Jazz, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Milwaukee Bucks. I decide to try out for the Magic. Fast forward to the Magic practice gym for my tryout. I end up up with 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, and 1 turnover. Not looking good for a 10 day contract. |

Thankfully the Magic decide to offer up a 10 day contract. My minutes are going to be limited as I'll be behind starting PG Luke Ridnour and Elfrid Payton. I have to make the most of the minutes I get and hope to get signed on for the rest of the season.
First game up is against the Memphis Grizzlies. Channing Frye stops to talk to me in the locker room to give me advice before we head out to the court. I get into the game with 2 minutes left in the first with the score tied 9-9, first drive down the court, I come off of a screen by Nicholson and pull up for a jumper in the lane and score my first 2 career points. I end the game with 4 PTS, 2 REB, 2 AST, and 1 STL in 6 minutes of action, but we fall to Memphis 75-59. Gasol, Koufos, and Conley all led the Grizzlies with 12 PTS, while Tobias Harris led us with 16. The Magic fall to 11-37, worst record in the NBA, while Memphis improves to 28-18 Channing Frye stops me in the tunnel to tell me I did good work in my first game, but that hopefully we can string some W's together. January 29th, 2015 Milwaukee Bucks @ Orlando Magic
Jabari Parker (11 PTS 3 REB 3 AST 4 STL) is leading the charge for the Bucks, as they lead 53-43 at the half. I play 9 minutes in the first half, and lead the team in scoring with 10, while also chipping in 2 REB and an assist. We storm back and grab a late 3rd quarter lead, as I check back in. But, it's only for another minute and I sit the rest of the game. Magic lose 96-93. Victor Oladipo lead us with 20 PTS, while Brandon Knight had a double double (20 PTS 10 AST) to lead the Bucks. After the game I learn that Luke Ridnour has lost the starting PG spot to Elfrid Payton, and Ridnour slides behind me in the rotation. January 31st, 2015 Orlando Magic @ Dallas Mavericks Tight game at the half as we trail 48-47. Chandler Parsons has 18 PTS to lead Dallas, while Nikola Vucevic leads us with 13. I get in for 14 minutes in the first half scoring 6 and adding 2 boards and 3 assists. Unfortunately, I sit the entire second half and we lose 113-111 in OT. Dirk Nowitzki lead all scorers with 29, Parsons finishes with 25, and Vucevic lead us with 25. |

Thanks.
February 2nd, 2015 Orlando Magic @ Oklahoma City Thunder (Lost my writeup because my computer restarted due to Windows Updates.) We lose big, 119-85. Kevin Durant lead all scorers with 35, also chipping in 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Tobias Harris had 14 for us. I play 26 minutes scoring 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, but I turned the ball over 5 times. February 5th, 2015 Orlando Magic @ San Antonio Spurs The last day of my 10 day deal, I need to make this game count. After being up by as many as 18, we lead 49-42 at the half. I play 11 minutes in the first half with 2 points, 3 assists, and once again have the turnover bug, with 4. Tobias Harris leads the team with 14, while Tony Parker has 15 for the Spurs. We hold on for a 95-88 win behind Harris' 28. I finish with 16 minutes, 9 points, 3 assists, and have 5 turnovers for the second straight game. Hopefully it's enough for another contract. Parker finished with 21 for the Spurs. February 6th, 2015 I get called into the GM's office first thing. He tells me I haven't done enough to secure a regular roster spot, but I have done enough to earn another 10 day contract. Through my first 10 day deal I'm averaging 8 PPG on 43% shooting, 2.4 APG, 1.8 RPG, and 2.4 TOPG. |

February 6th, 2015 Los Angeles Lakers @ Orlando Magic
At the half the Lakers lead 53-47. Kobe Bryant leading the way for the Lakers with 15, while Evan Fournier has 17 for us. I play 11 minutes notching 7 points and 3 assists. As the second half begins, I get moved to shooting guard, and get the pleasure of guarding Kobe. I check back out after a minute and a half, but hold Kobe to no points. Lakers win 117-100. Kobe finishes with 31 and 7 rebounds, while Steve Nash contributed 15 with 10 assists. Nikola Vucevic with the double double for us, 22 points and 13 boards. I play 20 minutes, scoring 13 to go along with 4 assists. (After the game I unlock the "Spark Plug" badge due to my ability to score when coming off of the bench.) February 8th, 2015 Chicago Bulls vs. Orlando Magic We're down 52-45 at the half, mainly due to Derrick Rose torching me every chance he can get. Rose has 20 and is 8-8 from the floor. Tobias Harris leads us with 13. I play 12 minutes scoring 9 with 3 assists and 3 steals. Derrick Rose doesn't let up and we lose 96-86. Rose finishes with 42 on 18-25 shooting, including 3-3 from beyond the arc. Harris and Vucevic lead us with 18 each, and I finish with 12 in 18 minutes, along with 4 assists and 4 steals. My high school coach visits me in the tunnel after the game. February 9th, 2015 Orlando Magic (12-42) @ Washington Wizards (16-36) We trail 55-53 at the half. Paul Pierce has 11 for the Wizards, and Tobias Harris leads us with 10. I get 15 minutes in the first half, scoring 6 with 2 boards and 3 assists. I sit the entire 4th quarter, but we win the game 111-107. Vucevic paced us with 20 along with 10 boards. I finish with 12 on 5-8 shooting in 20 minutes also with 2 boards and 4 assists. February 11th, 2015 New York Knicks (27-26) @ Orlando Magic (13-42) Knicks lead 59-50 at the half behind Pablo Prigioni's 12 points and 6 assists. I lead the team in scoring at the half with 8, also grabbing 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Knicks win a laugher, 127-88, shooting 59% and 52% from deep. Prigioni finishes with 30 and 10 assists, while Carmelo Anthony scored 23 while pulling down 10 boards. I lead us in scoring with a career high 22 along with 3 boards, 5 assists, and 3 steals, but I also turn the ball over a season high 7 times. This was the last game of my second 10 day contract, and I feel confident that I'll at least get another one. February 12, 2015 After last nights embarrassing loss, we have a team scrimmage to work on our rebounding. I get 4 points and 3 assists. February 13th, 2015 I'm called into the GM's office. He tells me he made a mistake not drafting me, and only giving me a 10 day contract. He gives me a guaranteed deal for the remainder of the season. Immediately after, I head to the locker room with the rest of the team to watch game film. My agent, Will Regan, sends me a tweet telling me he's landed me my first local endorsement deal with Dottie's Diner. We now have a few days to rest up, as we reach the All-Star break. |

February 20th, 2015 New Orleans Pelicans (21-32) @ Orlando Magic (13-43)
Jrue Holiday (18 PTS, 4 AST) and Anthony Davis (14 PTS, 7 REB) are pacing the Pelicans, as they lead 64-41 at the half. The Pelicans are lights out so far, shooting 60%. Tobias Harris (11 PTS) and Nikola Vucevic (11 PTS, 5 REB) are our leaders. I play 13 minutes in the first half, with 9 PTS and 4 AST. Pelicans win it 122-100, finished with 57% shooting and 60% from downtown. Jrue Holliday finishes with 28 along with 9 AST, while Anthony Davis chips in 26 PTS and 11 REB. Nikola Vucevic finishes with 24 and 12 REB. I play 21 minutes finishing with 11 PTS, 1 REB, 7 AST, and 1 STL. In the locker room after the game, Channing Frye voices his displeasure with how the team is playing to me. My agent, Will Regan, introduces me to his client and fellow rookie Dante Exum. Regan tells Exum that I'm going to be the biggest undrafted success in the history of the NBA, Exum says I'll have to get through him to do so and we get in each others face. (I'm awarded the Cool And Collected badge after the game due to my ability to go on extended cold streaks. The badge helps me maintain focus and I can never go completely cold.) I get two more endorsement deals, this time with Dennis & Son Decking and Jackson's Auto Body. February 22nd, 2015 Philadelphia 76ers (15-39) @ Orlando Magic (13-44) In a battle between the two worst teams in the NBA, we lead 57-51 at the half. Tony Wroten has 18 PTS to lead Philadelphia, while Tobias Harris is our leading scorer with 14. I've played 11 minutes so far, with 6 PTS, 3 AST, and 2 STL. 76ers keep it close for most of the 4th, eventually cutting the lead to 1 with 7 seconds remaining. They intentionally foul me and send me to the line where I sink both free throws to seal the 112-109 win. Jason Richardson (25 PTS) and Joel Embiid (22 PTS, 9 REB) lead the way for the Sixers. Tobias Harris and Channing Frye (each with 20 PTS, 5 REB), and myself lead the charge. I finish with 20 in 22 minutes, also 1 REB, 6 AST, and 3 STL. Channing Frye praises me in the locker room after the game. He then stops at my place later just to chat about life in the NBA, tells me to appreciate what I have, and to keep working hard and there will always be a role for me on the Magic. The Oasis Garden Center signs me on to do a promotion for them. |
