Yesterday I jumped the gun, disoriented momentarily about the stage we were in, and made a ton of cuts... only to then realize it was the training camp stage, not the preseason. So, camp is now in the bag, and cut-to-60 day is actually here.

Big pivot: the OL. Right now, with my long-planned ascendance of RT Caiden Jennings to the chem lead, we have an uninspiring total of 4 affinities with him. That is not stellar. I could, I suppose, load up with other guys, but if I have decided that the longer term play is to shift groupings and build with smart guys (and I have) then this makes no real sense.

Cuts from OL: T Jennings, C Bosley (wants to get paid, won't start at G this year if we are committing to new blood), G Lewis, G Fattel. That leaves us with way too many guys on board still, but we'll have a look at preseason movement to sort out who stays and (more importantly) who plays this year.

Incidentally, bad twist with rookie G Carpenter...he's got a toxic combination of 99 leadership and 14 personality, so can't be a long term asset for us without a major stroke of luck (a 99 ldr guy to step ahead of him). Stinks, as he looked like he could have been a start-at-G-forever type of guy for us.

Incidentally, QB Levine wants to extend at just a shade over his 40-something price tag. Not even giving it a second thought. It's time to test the waters at QB, a dicey proposition but after last year it's just too hard to commit to him being the guy we want there for the years ahead.

We'll spend some $ on pass rushers, sorry Squirrel.

DC BUREAU

So, I messed things up yesterday, and the AI made a roster cutdown on its own, so I have work to do there manually. So it goes. Doing this with about 60% of my usual attention is subpar, especially for the way I run my team, but that's apparently what it's going to be for now.

WR Malone, literally the most important player on the team, is likely walking into free agency after this year. It's on me, I just failed to keep track of my cap space demands (including doing so in this thread) and lost track of it. So, that will be fun. I tried to make a backloaded offer to him in the last stage, but he declined and I don't think I can afford his asking price. Chemistry is dragging this team more than I might have expected, right now.

Meanwhile, two of the top four drafts in the BenBot rankings are from the "side project" teams in our division. So, our saving grace here in DC has been than nobody else was putting forth a very strong product. That may be about to change, I guess. MalcPow and Jeremsssiah are both good GMs, and capable of better depending on their level of commitment.

Cutdown to 53 for us is a bit painful, I have a lot of side projects on the roster, but it's mostly pruning guys who won't really have a role anytime soon.

TE Tafoya took a disappointing ratings drop, dammit. Our TE situation may remain a mess. That's upsetting - he's a 9th year guy, it was in the mix but a -12 seems too much for a guy we expected to really play a ton. Damn.

Cutdowns... ok, not so bad. No deal for WR Malone. We should be building affinities, putting out a credible roster, and hope for another division title here.

Back in Baltimore...

We finally get the deal for DT Middleton to go through. So, that gives us a legit plan for D7 chemistry - he's a 7th year guy with 90 personality, and we'll extend him for two more seasons, so that's settled for the medium term. Not exciting... but hey, if you're actually reading this thread at this point, then routine shore-up-chemistry crap must be at least kinda your cup of tea, right?

Here's the roster at 60, for reference as we do cutdowns:

So, major takeaways? $30m in cap space means we ought to be able to do something with that, right? Set that aside for now.

My big crux right now is, after a really disappointing season last year, how much to I value maximizing things for this season? QB is at the end of his contract. We've got double 1st rounders the next two seasons, and two young-ish build-around players for our offense. But this stage - cutting from 60 to 53 - seems to be the time to resolve questions like those.

OL, we have already cast our lot with the 3-4/5-6/10-11 group. And right on cue, we get a volatility stick on our 2nd round pick Phil West - our theoretical RT for the next decade now looks like a basket of twigs. Great. So, what exactly are we building with at OL? T Douglas starts this year somewhere and takes the leadership - fine. Around him we will have two too-good-to-sit guys in LT O'Donnell and C Glode, chem neutral both. 4th round rookie G Carpenter indeed looks good, but he's a looming chem problem - I hate when that happens. Veteran G Crawford is a chem fit, but to what end? He's barely in the start-now conversation as is... and he won't be getting any better. Might as well just start veteran G Kendrick, whom we can't afford to re-sign. 2nd year T Pilcher is the sort of guy we have to consider... ratings inching upward, and would fit in as a very solid chem fit. T Ellis, same deal - and he can squeeze in some painless starts this season as well. Okay... not in as good shape as I had hoped, but we're committed now, so giddyup.

(The boss move here would be to throw the season, start all these high-affinity guys to get them clicked in, and just try to roll with an all-cohesion-all-chem OL for the next 12 seasons, and see how that works... but I'm not doing that, despite this being the ultimate sandbox league)

So... OL group we're keeping looks like: C Glode; G Carpenter Crawford Kendrick; T O'Donnell Douglas Pilcher West Ellis. Kendrick is on my bubble for a last cut... we won't commit to him longer term than this year. He's honestly pretty good, but not a $30m guy for us, no longer in our chem structure, and just bound to hit the road anyway. We'll see.

Other cuts: DE Woods is fading and replaceable, others fall into similar lanes, this is not exciting to detail.

We'll carry a 3rd QB for chem, an absurd gaggle of chem-loaded TE and WR, and close to the bare minimum on defense.

Yeah, file sent. No clear idea whether this is a 6-win team or an 11-win team. Seriously.

Well, I can report that I'm awaiting the new file for GML, and I am actually fairly interested to see what happens with my teams. That's a good sign, maybe there's still a pulse here.

Okay, then... old school it is.

10-win Baltimore Gains Wild Card Berth

This will fall toward the upper end of the "hurricane landing projection" model, I guess. We end up a solid team once again, and hopefully will just write off last season as the aberration in what was otherwise a pretty good positive run. We are not elite, but solid. Let's look it over:

QB Levine - back on track, workmanlike 6.6ypt and 83 rating, fine not great

RB Zamora - still not sure why we did this but >5 ypc is solid, Liverwurst is done
WR 11 and 18 both very solid 8.0, 7.5 ypt as the guys we need to harness better
FB Hillhouse just not good enough as the swing receiving TE, need work there
Defense pass rush and PD% are 9th and 11th... good enough to match decent offense

We win 10 games despite a -11 turnover differential... some regression to the mean might indicate we could be better than this, even. QB will be interesting this offseason. I will try to regain some enthusiasm.

DC Earns Top Seed With 12-4 Season

That's good. Cool. Division still reeks, that's an unfair advantage for now.

QB Clancy put together a very solid season, his best in my offense, 96+ rating
RB Trotter has descended into replacement level production, that's ok
WR Malone posts 1400 yards on 7.5 ypt, slightly subpar for him
WR Carrubba and TE Tafoya each top 1,000 yards- decent complements
Tafoya is a click above "awful" - so that's better... 6 ypt is meh but

Our pass rush ranked 7th...and I don't really get how. Singleton played less and notched only 6 sacks. Maybe we just tallied a ton of hurries?

PD% was fine (9th) for a group without any serious stars. I like that. It's probably mostly a function of having a QB throwing 45 TDs, but I prefer to think that we have finely honed the roles and duties across these various component parts, to assemble something greater than their sum. Anyway, it should just get better... we could be assembling a chem monster with our DB group, kind of like BAL went through, but without the actual talent to back it up (and the cap hit).

Anyway, yay. We beat tzach's Rams head to head so have home field for the postseason. So we're in the serious conversation, then, despite my misgivings.

For Balt... the -11 differential and 10 wins... I could see a playoff run... everything goes back to the mean... which means not a lot of turnovers are coming... I think we're in for a fun playoff ride in both conferences...

Heh, I'm sorta mulling what to do with BAL. I have pissed off G Kendrick by sitting him this season, so he won't come back. I have submitted my file for the playoffs including a move to release him (why not) and pick up a decent-looking 3rd year player to get a jump on next offseason.

But...maybe the right play is to plug Kendrick back in as a starter for the playoffs, right? He's a high quality player, the guy starting at RG is merely a chembum (new term coined right there), and maybe that's an edge worth stealing here? Thinking it over now.

Have some cap space, DT Denby is asking for a mountain of cash, he's the one big money guy I will likely lock up, possibly falling prey to sunk costs fallacy, but honestly just thinking about cohesion and chemistry, coupled with overall talent. if we didn't re-sign him, I'd end up committing real resources to that position, so why not just re-up with the guy who's already excelling (first team all pro this year)?

There is no "solution" at QB for us this offseason, as nearly as I can tell. No impact free agent, no alluring draft pick, nothing that is looming as a secret plan. I wish there were, but no such luck.

So, team is in a "contender" groove, but have some contract decisions to make this year that will bear on now/future as our focus. Coming off a 1st seed makes me inclined toward "now" but... in a sandbox league like this, who knows, to be honest.

We lost C Spreen to retirement, a bad twist that leaves us in a chem pickle along the OL. May detail that later, but we'll tally that up as a matter or some real concern.

So...a LOT of cap space on paper, but we are sitting on two high quality veteran performers who are technically free agents. I'd think that making a "go for it" effort this season would require us to get them back for cohesion and quality purposes, even if doing so depletes the ammunition to improve the team otherwise.

So... weird twist with this guy. I wanted him in that draft, but didn't get him (I don't recall the details)... he went to the Titans, nominally run by Squirrel but who had basically ghosted. So, it seems that tzach and I ended up in a bidding war to get him, after TEN drafted him in round two, and tzach won only to plop him on his bench because he was playing yet another QB I had coveted in his draft the year before.

So, here he is today: QB Austin Lyle

tzach knows things I do not, I get that. He has, elsewhere, professed his love for a high timing bar in his QBs, I confess I don't really understand what that does for us. Lyle has apparently developed fine on the bench, and indeed looks good. He is about as mistake-free as QBs in this triad get... but I'm deliberately trying to move away from that triad largely for that reason.

A 1st? Hmm. I don't think this is a seller's market for a guy like this. I will have to mull it over.

Another fun twist is that our starting RB is a free agent. Signed for a pretty fat 3yr deal, he has been almost the epitome of "replacement level." I have not given him a great OL to run behind, but not a tragically bad one, either. The "system" is capable of generating solid seasons from our RB1 (see Ravens), so it's not purely that he is up against the wind. He might just... stink.

He doesn't look like he stinks, but maybe he just stinks

Anyway...we probably have the cap space to outbid AVAILABLE for him if we want to, I doubt any human teams would be hot to get him... but do we want to? I have a youngster from last year's 8th round who looks... credible... and drafting lowish-investment running backs to plug-and-play is everyone's idea of a reasonable plan.

So... we will mull this over, too.

Pretty much according to plan. I don't really know what, if anything, I am supposed to do differently with a QB who has this skillset, but... I reckon we'll try.

win-win -- this draft looks loaded so i hsould get an OL or DL with 1st round grade at 2.24.

and when was the last time that a trade was initiated on fofc? pretty cool

very common sight each season in the otherwise fast-moving GML... league sitting for days on this particular guy's very early pick, often 1.1 (a player he will then not bother to re-sign, let walk away, and ensure his team remains in the lottery conversation ad infinitum)

fun times

More interesting news inside the other beltway... here in Baltimore we re-up with ILB Schenk, and sign a no-risk depth option at WR. Meh.

QB Lyle does not have big ambitions, and we will try to extend him for two more years before he starts this season. He looks fine on our roster, no shocks there.

So, I love love love it when I ace it in free agency, and get the coveted guy for $33m/yr when the other offers come in at $31 and $28. Love it.

So, this sucks:

Kansas City Chiefs
Jeremessiah
SE Wade Plummer
3 years, $248,000,000 (Bonus: $230.0M. Salary: $6.0M, $6.0M, $6.0M.)
79
79

...leaving me in the dust:

Washington Football Team
WR Wade Plummer
4 years, $344,000,000
79
79

I thought I had put my offer all bonus... but it's possible that it was $8m a year in base salary or something. Anyway, my offer of $86m/yr wasn't enough. That's a rare thing, a top-tier WR in his prime, available in free agency. I likely won't be able to spend the $3m/yr it would have taken to land him. Dammit.

We also watch RB Trotter walk to AVAILABLE in Dallas. That means MalcPow's short-lived fling with my division has ended, maybe that's for the best for us. As is the signing, I reckon. I tried to re-up, but knew I'd lose to AVAILABLE if it came to that. It did. Guess I'll have to fight to find somebody to run for 4ypc in the draft, perhaps. Oh dear.

On the good side, WR Malone is back in the saddle under a new contract, which is the thing we really needed. So, we'll move on from disappointment and say we should be mostly the same air attack this year as last. Malone still the #1, young complementary guys on the rise, and Clancy still slingin' it. We'll be okay.

Basically, if I'm not going to be hands on...it's best to just ignore the draft until I'm on the clock. Once again, by keeping a loose eye on the first round as it approaches the BAL pick at 24, I get a tingle as two of my top players fall and fall... then go off the board in the late teens (rather than the top ten where I expected). The league is very hard to trade in, so I'm not fiddling with that. Alas, not a big deal. I have a minor reach pick all set to go here, seems unlikely he'll drop before my pick.

Baltimore dilemma: Do we just give up on FB/TE Hillhouse?

Here's his player card - he has developed as expected, he's not a bust, just a guy who doesn't seem to fit any role that I have for him. I have, basically, two TE jobs in this offense... a fairly traditional Y/TE1 job that includes a lot of short-ish routes, mostly over the middle, used across a lot of situations. And a T/TE2 role, mainly from our 11 formation, where I (in theory) try to get a guy freed up to make a play.

The last two seasons, I manually slotted him into the T formation, and each year he rewarded us with a deeply disappointing 5.3y yards per target. There may be more to the story, but... well, who cares? That sucks.

I'm looking back on the last guy this team featured in the role - Arturo Weydahl was effective for a long time, despite having one very bad rating (courage, IIRC)... even he posted north of 6 ypt pretty much every year, with some well above that.

So... I feel like the question is, do we just move on from Hillhouse? He is nice for my predilection to just collect red bars, since he has many of them, but they are presumably just in the wrong places, or else his 5'11" 228lb frame is simply not up to the rigors of playing tight end in FOF. Either way, I feel like I have seen enough of this show.

As BAL sits in the on-deck circle for the draft, here is my assessment of "team needs" for the short-to-medium term on this roster.

Build-around quality OL, especially OT
Infusion of DB talent, especially a future CB1/2
TE worthy of many targets (see above)
All-purpose LB
RB
DB depth
LB depth
special teams depth

We have the battery in place - with QB-WR1-WR2 all set for a long time, I hope. So we should be fitting in pieces around them. Have spent some time on D7 already. Not in crisis mode.

Well, this was my minor reach. And... early returns are not great. My scout had his RR at the absolute max, the league sees him merely near-max there, that's a big difference to me (well documented). Might be yet another frustrating try to squeeze real value out of the TE slot, gone wrong.

Some real opportunity cost, too - I had a handful of players I liked a fair bit in this slot, and likely still get one, but will have missed out on another to take the TE with hopes of him exceeding the apparent projection seen above.

Also, we land a C in free agency, who should also be a useful asset short/medium term:

The LB is a major run stopper, but again disappointing scouting update - the 100 I saw before now looks like a 96 there on my team. Meh.

Certainly possible that the Ravens OL this year includes only one holdover from the old regime:

LT O'Donnell (no chem)
bench LT Douglas (98 leader)
bench LT Ellis (85)
LG Carpenter (14)
C Cook (22)
RG Rookie Emmons (??)
bench RG Flannery (68)
RT Pilcher (87)

Very optimistic here. We have a chem problem looming with the OL group, and may need some options - this guy should give us one. Hoping he's "the answer" at LT for the next 12 years.

In free agency, two buffs for the OL as well:

Washington Football Team
KickStand
LG Raul Ciervo
3 years, $24,000,000 (Bonus: $30K. Salary: $8.0M, $8.0M, $8.0M.)
47

KickStand

4 years, $96,000,000 (Bonus: $68.0M. Salary: $7.0M, $7.0M, $7.0M, $7.0M.)
62
62

Randle obviously the key addition here - supreme pass blocker at LG, an odd skill/position mix. But great for chemistry, and once again, targeting that position here for the years ahead. Ciervo is an team-option sort of guy, evident by that contract.

Yes, as long as I can set aside my disappointment over landing the co-star WR, then I am quite pleased with that team. There's an OL chem problem I'm working on, but other than that I am in a pretty good place with that team.

For a guy who literally has two of the top three rated players on his roster "on the block," that's some unexpected swagger, right?

So, of T Sheldon becomes our long term OL chem leader, he's a 3-4 guy, and who would click with him and his 98 personality?

LT O'Donnell (no chem)
bench LT Ellis (85)
LG Carpenter (14, until he takes chem leadership, rats)
C Cook (22)
RG Rookie Emmons (??)
bench RG Flannery (68)
RT Pilcher (87 no chem)

It's not packed with huge personality numbers, but building around a 98 guy there is the key to making it click, I think. We are also, unsurprisingly, building up a solid trivia team, as we committed to the 3-4/5-6/10-11 triad, noted for high intelligence (and that's the trendy thing to do with your OL, presumably to avoid penalties).

TL;DR - we need to add quality at OT but otherwise OL is looking pretty good.

Biggest news is we won a mini-bidding-war for DT Pascal - he's neutral for chem right now, but he is (1) among the top rated free agents in the league, (2) a major plus for cohesion, and (3) our obvious Plan B chem leader if/when chem monster Cannida retires. So, glad to bring him back.

Yet again a disappointing turn on the "accumulated scouting reveal" in the forum thread - my scouts graded him a good deal better in the all-important hole rec, so that's disappointing to see. Anyway, it is a need position, he came back very underrated, and he's got at least good bars in the key areas I look for for my 1st-and-ten back... so that's okay. We were a #1 seed last year getting a mere 4 ypc from my heavy duty back - the bar really isn't set that high.

We're on deck for the next pick... I'm anticipating we slide into role players the rest of the way, unsurprisingly. We lost our run-stopping DT in free agency this stage (a little surprisingly) so that position moves into the top tier of our areas to address (hint, hint).

Okay, free agency continues. I'm a bit surprised that we lose out on WR Stocz, he's a 10th year guy rated 48 overall... I thought my solid offer would land him as a cohesion/ST asset again. Instead, our dear friend from Houston managed to snipe him. Legit player, though, and for a team like Houston who doesn't have much respectable talent on the passing game roster, perhaps Stocz will be an important piece. So, good luck to them both, I reckon.

Anyway, the moves we did make:

SE Lonnie Stocz
FA Stage 8
turned down a contract offer: 1yrs, $14,600,000.

QB Courtney Greene
FA Stage 8
turned down a contract offer: 2yrs, $7,860,000.

FB Herman Smith
FA Stage 8
signed as a free agent: 2yrs, $5,760,000.

LT Terry Paullin
FA Stage 9
signed as an unrestricted free agent from Minnesota: 2yrs, $10,360,000.

RB Bernie Schweigert
FA Stage 9
re-signed as an unrestricted free agent

MLB John Spillman
FA Stage 9
signed as a free agent: 2yrs, $7,440,000.

The OL is a short term patch-over chem leader, we'll see if he's needed this year but no risk. RB Liverwurst returns and reclaims his throne as group leader, and likely will be back in the saddle for 80 carries or so as RB2.

In the draft, nothing too exciting, as you've come to expect from this thread:

Baltimore: QuikSand takes ILB Gabriel Gaynord with the 6.23 pick.

The optimistic case here is - we're thin at LB as it is, so he has a shot to get into the lineup a bit, hopefully develop into a role player, and if that ST bar really has potential to go very high, he's a nice affinity piece for a long time, at no cost.

The more likely scenario is - the ST bar is a mirage, maxes out at only 75, skills are so weak he'd be a liability to put in for starts, and with no real path to value for us, and without a free year of affinity, he gets cut after preseason this year.

Fun!

We got pushed by Ben's Falcons on CB Burroughs, into a one year real money deal. He's basically a nice fringe piece (with no appreciable CB skills) - 93 ST, 85 KR, and if it matters, 76 personality with the starts to activate it. For me, he's valuable. In a no-injury league, without a cap crunch, I can afford to spend 2-3x minsal to keep him around, as he's now also a cohesion asset for us.

LB Dawson isn't exciting, but a short term deal at a thin position seemed okay to me - a do-it-all guy who will likely give us time in a big LB rotation.

WR Collins got real money, and it's for a reason. He's a 5th year guy, has good enough skills to actually play a bit if needed, but most importantly he's an 86Ldr/98Pers guy in the 2-3 group, and immediately takes over as our chem leader, locking my two build-around start receivers 11 and 18, and my newly acquired starting QB, into long term bliss. This is good.

So... kind of big things happening with this. Okay, now on to the (presumably) dispiriting look at the rookie class so far...

Ravens Rookie Rundown

Quick thoughts upon the "sneak peek"

1.22 TE Gilbertson - looks okay, not great, but well along in the right places
1.30 LG Emmons - not well developed, but projects into long term LG asset
4.22 WR McCormick - bars remain uninspiring, need a weird breakout
6.23 LB Gaynord - ST bar looks 80/98 and that would make this totally worthwhile
7.22 FS Spangler - tough to see him getting starts to lock in affinity, meh

Hey, if the TE becomes a good-enough-to-start guy, the G becomes a plug-and-play-forever, and we also get a long term affinity gunner... we're not gonna break out into Daiyenu or anything, but it will suffice, even for a two-firsts draft.

...the move at WR also puts Liverwurst back in play for making the final 53 this year. He's slotted as RB2 right now, and he's good at special teams, so I don't hate having him around. But he's not great for chemistry, and isn't really helping anything long term. Moving former TE/WR leader Polley to play FB, and assume the group lead from the 2-3 group would mean stronger affinities, more consolidation for our offensive structure (both RB and WR leaders in the same group) and a more stable long term plan. Probably a "when" more than an "if" here.

So, late stages for DC are a mixed bag.

RDE J.R. Singleton
FA Stage 10
re-signed as an unrestricted free agent

TE Brenden Sell
FA Stage 10
re-signed as an unrestricted free agent

LS Jumbo Clinton
FA Stage 10
signed as a free agent: 2yrs, $7,860,000.

SS Bernie Followay
FA Stage 10
turned down a contract offer: 1yrs, $9,200,000.

TE Darrell Tafoya
Late FA Stage 1
has begun a contract holdout

I am enamored with DE Singleton, despite his lack of affinity and stats dropoff last year, so I'm glad he will (presumably) wrap up his productive years here. We had ammo to fill in, but I'm glad he will return.

TE Sell is a decent insurance policy, and a chem fit.

LS Clinton is the guy I wish would take the chemistry reins for our OL group. Sigh.

TE Tafoya... oh, I see how it is. You're so chuffed about your mighty 6 yards per target last season, you think you're now a $20 million man. Got it. Okay, Mr Sell, that insurance policy may be coming due more rapidly than I had initially expected. Ever heard of the term "replacement value" in sports? Here we are.

Washington Whispers from Wee Ones

1.28 LT Donovan Rodier - looks very good, a bit run-inclined (future RT?)
2.28 RB Max Gillespie - looks ok, but if HR only tops out in 40s, not worth pick
3.28 DT Aidan Sweeney - he's a half click below what I had hoped for, meh
4.26 OL Grayson Rhodes - low dev, but still projects as ok run blocker, bubble
4.28 LB Angel Arbuckle - looks like a very solid passing-down LB, pleased
5.28 LB Nicholas Waldron - does not look like he can play football
6.28 DE Luke Crouch - tried to defer to the "big board," looks like a cut
7.28 TE Shawn Kimsey - probably a cut, aiming for a run blocker, but not enough

Again, if the mixed bag here actually yields us a few pieces of useful fruit, I'll b okay with that. Hoping to make some gains in the 8th round.
