Which is a better text sim?

Which is better overall in terms of fun, playability, realism?

I prefer trout over Kirby Puckett.

With many of them now having limited graphical options, I prefer the term "sports management simulation."

What are some of the reasons you may like either one over the other?

A lot of the reasons I prefer FM have to do with what makes soccer more interesting than baseball for me. Multiple top level leagues, promotion/relegation, continental competitions, international tournaments like the World Cup, etc. There is just a lot more going on. In the games themselves there is more interaction between a manager and the players in FM compared to OOTP.

OOTP has historical play and is very customizable, two things that I like which FM does not have.

I'd say both, one plus on the OOTP side is the ability to import careers into future versions.

I'm a big play every game guy and I like the way FM makes you feel that the decisions you make determine your success..tactics,squad,team talks etc. There is more strategy involved.
I love OOTP but it still seems more like a quick sim game based on the quality of your players.

FM is more immersive, OOTP more customizable. I think it's rigged because I like baseball more, but I've got a ton more mileage out of FM than any other soccer game on earth. If it were more customizable, my life would be complete.

I didn't know a damn thing about soccer before playing FM and I'm as big of a baseball fan as you'll find.

With that out of the way, it's FM 2010 and I don't think it's remotely close. I like OOTP 11. It's a good game. FM is on a completely different level than any other text sim out there right now.

yep. i thought i was done with fm months ago but i keep finding new ways to make it interesting. by far the most mileage i've ever gotten out of a game.

ootp is ok but there was always something that would creep up that would ruin it for me.

Depends on what you are looking for. Both are very good and FM borders on great. The difference may be how much you know about soccer and tactics. I still feel like I am just along for the ride in any FM game that I play. I still like the game but have no clue what kind of tactics to use.

This is the first version of OOTP that I have tried in a while and I have been pleasantly impressed. I like that you can customize it and I am big at playing through every game as manager. It feels right when I am playing. The only thing that I have come up against so far is that my team owner is pissed in my fictional league. He started the season not happy or upset and said that we need to win it all this season. We are one month into the season and I am leading my division but he is pissed, trying to figure out why.

Some adantages of ootp:

1. importing your careers from previous versions of the game
2. you can play at any pace you want: either play out every game, or quick sim entire decades. fm forces you to play at one pace (unless you take a vacation), which can be very slow at times.
3. b/c baseball is more stats-happy, ootp clearly outpaces fm in terms of statistics tracking
4. easily customizable league structure and rules. can you even make a fm hobbit league?!

The advantage of FM:

I get so immersed in the game I actually care about my players.

I voted for OOTP because I'm not much of a soccer fan.

This is something I don't like either. I like to be able to sim seasons at a time, in a fictional setting.

Another thing that I think sucks about FM is that none of the players are truly generated. If you get 10-15 years into the future and players have retired, etc, they just get re-used as the new guys coming in with different names.

I haven't tried FM in a while so I could be totally wrong, too.

That's not been the case for several versions.

According to your posting history you own both, so which do you find to be better?

I can only compare OOTPX with FM 2010:

OOTPX - a solid game that keeps its shape for decades. there are a few minor flaws in the AI that mean you have to self-police yourself a bit.

FM 2010 - a wicked fun game that becomes a heartbreaking crashfest.

While I'm obviously somewhat biased ... I'd say both games are very good but aimed at slightly different audiences and playing styles, hence comparisons of them isn't really fair.

Changed a long long time ago .... FM these days uses 'newgens' (which is new players are styled according to the country they regenerate within, so Brazillian players are more flair orientated on average than English ones etc.) but are brand new players .... anyway even when we did use 'regens' there were aspects of them which were altered so that things weren't predictable (so say Anelka might be regenned as a model professional player in CM01-02 etc.).
