For those watching the Mizzou vs Okla. game, Billy Tubbs gets ejected and suspended for that announcement in 2021, right?

FTR, he did get a technical.

I believe this means every seed except for #16 won a game this first round

Shaka still yet to win a tourney game at Texas. He's lost to Northern Iowa on a half court shot, lost to Nevada in OT, and lost to Abilene Christian on free throws with 1.2 left.

Does he really want to leave there for like a Minnesota or Marquette now? Chicago's a hotbed of talent, plenty of smaller universities have shown you can develop a consistent program, plus fwiw he does have a daughter who is a sophomore on the women's team at Loyola.

Everyone has a price.

Illinois got shafted. Loyola has no business being an 8 seed.

Story of the season for WVU: just good enough to lose close games to good teams. I generally like Syracuse and wish them good luck, but another full week of hearing about Buddy Boeheim is going to be rough.

We lost 10 games and I think Syracuse is the only team seeded higher than 8th. Lost at Kansas by 14 early in the season and every other loss was by 5 or less. I think every team is still alive, except Texas, too. Super frustrating season. Hope everyone comes back and gets a little better.

Yeah. He seems like a good kid and a freak athlete.

Apparently, his “handlers” didn’t like him playing with another big like Culver. Hopefully he does not get lost in the crowd at Kentucky. With all due respect to WVU, I’m guessing there is a lot more 4- and 5-star talent there.

I wonder what Boeheim’s career record is vs Rutgers. He was Syracuse’s coach the entire time Rutgers was in the Big East. Will be an interesting matchup if they can hold on.

That took more digging that I expected.

Based on this page from SU, through 12/8/20, he should be 25-6 against them (not counting any forfeits, games he might have missed with suspension/illness/etc).

The Rutgers win in Dec 2020 snapped a 12 game Cuse winning streak that dated back to 2003

My basketball pet peeves:

1. When a player gets an offensive rebound and seems to think shot clock didn't reset and he has to rush up a terrible spot. Especially when the team has a lead in the final minutes.

2. Someone yelling "and one!" anytime a player drives to the hoop, even when they're not fouled AND don't make the shot.

3. When a fallen player stays down for an extra second or two and the announcers react like he's definitely dead forever. (And then he gets up two second later and is fine).

Edit:

4. When a double-digit seed takes their foot off the gas in the last minutes and tries to cruise against a favored team.

Woohoo Phi Slama Jama (sort of) reborn. Glad UH pulled it out as a 38 year fan. They really were not aggressive enough at the 3 point line as they needed to be but they pulled it out a W in a game they frankly should win. Cause is another super tough game but with Ohio St, WVU and Illinois losing they do have at least a path that they could now make being the highest seed remaining’ in the Midwest all of sudden. It is pretty shocking with them a 11, 8 and either 12 or 4 seed left.

I didn't mind them running down the clock like that, it seemed like a good strategy, it just seemed nobody had the confidence to take a shot and it cost them. They still could've held on, but it seemed they kept making bad decisions down the stretch when it was still in reach. A bummer, because it was theirs for the taking. Can Pikell recruit any Jersey kids? Will this team be back?

I don't remember who was talking about it on CBS or Westwood One (Gottlieb maybe?) but they were pointing out how this is as close to a true neutral court tournament as we're going to see. There's no Duke in Greensboro and Raleigh for the first two weekends, for instance.

How good is Ethan Thompson from Oregon St? Watching that game last night, I know the hype is for Cunningham but Thompson was the best player on the floor imho.

I wouldn't draw any great long-term implications from this year's tournament. With all of the interruptions, even though it was managed better than I expected it to be, a number of teams are all over the map in terms of maintaining continuity and so on. There's always obstacles in any competitive endeavor, but it was never going to be a typical year.

I think this was maybe mentioned previously in this thread (or I read it a few weeks ago somewhere else), but next season could be one of the most competitive and fun seasons we have seen when you consider that all of these mid-majors and other non-NBA farm teams can potentially return their entire teams. The Dukes/Kentuckys/UNCs are all going to continue churning out their one and done players, while teams like Loyola-Chicago and Oral Roberts will have some 22-23-year old men playing together for the fifth season. If transfers don't make a ton of these mid-major guys go elsewhere, the quality of basketball should be really high next year.

Speaking of which - I did a fair amount of driving this weekend (up and back to Detroit), so I listened to a bunch of Westwood One's coverage on SXM. Not counting his parents, is there anyone who actually likes Doug Gottlieb? He's like a less outwardly macho but even more annoying version of Jim Rome. I can't stand listening to his condescending/smarmy "I'm really smart and funny" schtick.

Watching the Big 10 this week reminds me of watching Big 10 football about 10 years ago when everyone looked faster and better than them.

All this success just by announcing that Larry Scott would no longer be the commissioner of the Pac-12?

That's not been their style in general, they are about outscoring the opponent. Which works often, but it's better to play both ends when you can.

Iowa is impressive especially Garza. They met a team that did what they do better today in Oregon. Iowa couldn't get stops and let Oregon get anywhere they wanted most of the game.

Gonzaga was impressive today as well. The ways they can beat you...outside, inside, defense...it'll be interesting to see who's able to contain them and how they're able to do it. Baylor, with the 3 guards and the athleticism they have, looks to be the best bet to take them out.

Iowa had done to them what those teams do. Oregon was faster and quicker. Altman looked at the B1G and saw how to defend Iowa, Let Garza get his and guard the 3 point line with your faster, quicker guys.

Bad match up at that point for Iowa.

And all credit goes to Oregon. They were able to execute the plan and make the right play consistently throughout the game. They could be trouble for a lot of teams.

The Gophers hire Xavier assist Ben Johnson. Not sexy at all and his resume is very underwhelming. I'm guessing his ticket was his ties to the local AAU scene. While winning is the only way you will get someone like Jalen Suggs, you could build a very good team with the 4 stars that leave Minnesota.
