I've always wondered... what the hell do they do with all the baseballs they deem unusable bc they hit the dirt or were fouled off?

I am definitely jealous. I've never been to Opening Day and this one would have been a neat one for the Nats

Mike Leake will become the first MLB player since Xavier Nady in 2000 to skip the minors and make his professional debut in the majors when he starts for Cincinnati vs. the Cubs next Monday.

I know they kept saying Leake was the most MLB ready pro in last year's draft, but this is ridiculous.

I'm not thrilled about that. That seems like a license for Dusty to kill his arm. I would have much rather the fifth spot gone to Maloney or Wood and start Leake in AAA. There's the potential to put a whole lot of innings on a guy that hasn't faced that kind of work load.

edit: And this lineup sucks too!

21 Chris Dickerson CF

2 Orlando Cabrera SS

19 Joey Votto 1B

4 Brandon Phillips 2B

27 Scott Rolen 3B

32 Jay Bruce RF

17 Laynce Nix LF

55 Ramon Hernandez C

39 Aaron Harang RHP

The worst hitting option in LF, no Stubbs in CF, Cabrera at 2, and Phillips at 4. This is why everybody hates you Dusty.

FYI, here's a nifty primer (or attempt to figure out) MLB's blackout rules for TV and online stuff.

Inside MLB Extra Innings, MLB.TV and Television Blackouts

And here's the TV map of what teams you might be consider a "local market" for:

Dickerson should be in LF, and Stubbs in CF... but I don't think it's that bad. Dickerson is something like 5-10 career vs. Carpenter, so I can see the reasoning... although I doubt if Dusty did much more than try to stack the lineup with leftys.

Although the more I look at it, the more I hate it. Thanks for nothing, JPhillips.

I hope dickerson can turn out to be a decent leadoff, his OBP isn't bad.

The biggest WTF is defintely Nix in LF.

I really think Cabrera at 2 is a mistake. I see Votto coming up to bat a lot with nobody on base if that stays like that.

B-Phil at clean up. Interesting.

Bruce really needs to turn it around this year. Please Bruce.

I want to see more Hannigan this year too. Unless Hernandez continues his hitting from spring training (.422 ba in last ten games) but I see him settling back into his .250 hitting.

It's beyond fucked up for many people. Luckily for me, I'm truly in the Reds local market, so when the games are blacked out, I'll still get them on the local FSN channel (unless they aren't showing the games). But for some people, they may belong to multiple "local markets" and probably don't get access to any of the local games for those teams. Look at Las Vegas!

Has there been an opening day game where Josh Beckett didn't look shaky? I'm sure there has been, but he always sticks in my mind as a slow starter who just continually builds toward the end of the season.

here's hoping.

FWIW - as we all saw, he essentially had only 2 pitches (FB + change) last night. And his change isn't very effective because it's so fast. So it was rough. If you look at some of the breakdowns of the strikezones too...he got fucked (I saw one last night, but don't have a link to it handy). He was getting squeezed all night, and there were something like 7-8 pitches that were strikes (all over the zone) that got called balls on him. So combine all of that and it wasn't a good omen for him to have a good night.

Maybe he feels guilty about all the money the Red Sox are offering him in the purported upcoming 4-year deal and he didn't know any other way to tell them they should offer him less money.

Beckett allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. It was the worst of five Opening Day starts for the right-hander, who had allowed just four runs in 22 2/3 innings in his previous four.

I don't know how he looked during the previous 4 opening day starts, but the numbers say he was pretty good.

#2. Halladay is a beast. Never really watched him before, but he pitches like he's throwing darts.

My 2010 Predictions (I'm a homer so I'll have the Phillies winning it)

NL East:
1. Phillies
2. Mets
3. Marlins
4. Braves
5. Nationals

Comments: Everyone forgets that the Mets were the far-and-away NL front runner before the 2009 Regular Season. I think they'll be back and challenge for the wild-card, if not the division. Marlins will, again, be good. I just think the Braves are overrated. Pitching is strong, but, if Heyward is not the god everyone has said he is, I can't see that lineup consistently hitting over the summer. Nationals are better than in years past. NL East = deepest division in baseball.

NL Central:
1. Cubs
2. Cardinals*
3. Reds
4. Pirates
5. Brewers
6. Astros

Comments: Just like the Mets, everyone forgets that the Cubs have a lot of natural talent and got rid of one of the real clubhouse cancers in the league with Bradley gone. Cardinals will win the wild-card. Pirates will be surprisingly good this year. Every couple of years Pittsburgh will flirt with .500, and I think they have some good young talent. Brewers have no pitching and the Astros have not yet scratched the bottom of the "Ed Wade Experience."

NL West:
1. Rockies
2. Dodgers
3. Giants
4. D-Backs
5. Padres

Comments: Pretty much went chalk with what many baseball people have said. Rockies are the real deal and the biggest threat to the Phils for the National League pennant. Dodgers will take a step back. When Vicente Padilla is your opening day starter, look out. I think the Giants have a really good shot to take over the Dodgers and may even be a sleeper for the division. D-Backs and Padres still rebuilding.

NL Playoffs:
Divisional Series: Philadelphia over St. Louis (3-1) ; Colorado over Chicago (3-2)
NLCS: Philadelphia over Colorado (4-3)

AL East:
1. Yankees
2. Rays*
3. Red Sox
4. Orioles
5. Blue Jays

Comments: The Red Sox are good, but the Yankees and Rays are scary good. Orioles are getting better, Blue Jays are not.

AL Central:
1. Twins
2. Indians
3. Tigers
4. Royals
5. White Sox

Comments: Indians will be the surprise team in baseball, remaining in contention for the division pennant late in the baseball season. Still, with the new ballpark and Mauer's extension, Twinkies are going to be hard to beat. Tigers probably have the most talent of any of these teams, but how last year ended left a sour taste in my mouth. Royals are the Royals, and it all goes to shit in Chicago with a clean house in 2011.

AL West:
1. Angels
2. A's
3. Rangers
4. Mariners

Comments: Tough division to predict, but I'm not drinking the Mariners Kool-Aid. Cliff Lee and Felix sounds great on paper, but Lee's injury is a very forboding sign. Rangers come back to earth a little bit. So, it's between the Angels and A's, both who have had consistent success over the past ten years or so. I'll take the Angels, although losing Lackey will hurt more than they realize.

AL Playoffs:
Division Series: Yankees over Angels (3-0); Rays over Twins (3-2)
ALCS: Yankees over Rays (4-2)

World Series:
Philadelphia Phillies over New York Yankees in six games.

Admittedly, outside of Red Sox/Yankees/Rays my AL predictions are probably shit. I really only pay attention to the NL East, and I get some parallel information from other teams in the NL.

Seriously though, wouldn't it be a major upset if the ALCS winner wasn't the Yankees, Red Sox, or Rays?

This is the first year ever that I really haven't been that excited about the Cubs opener. Didn't follow them a ton in the offseason or spring training. Not sure if I'm burnt out from the Cubs or baseball in general. Last night's game though sort of made me realize why I've been focusing my attention on other sports (4 hour game).
