ELIMINATION SERIES PREVIEW
PREVIEW
For the first time, two teams will duke it out for the right to face the league's top seed. This time, we have two newcomers to the playoffs in the form of Los Angeles and Milwaukee in the NL and AL respectively. If you're a fan of SLOP from long ago, you'll recall that back in '39, the Milwaukee Blue Ribbons -- SLOP's first dynasty -- knocked off the LA Vulcans in the 2nd Sunset Series. Those teams are long gone, but new clubs have emerged to replace them under vibrant new leadership. Claphamsa led the LA Banditos to the playoffs in just their 3rd year. The fastest expansion team to make the playoffs was the Winnemucca Choo-Choos who won a title in just their 2nd year of existence. The pilot of that ship and the first GM of LA has emerged with a new name in Milwaukee. The artist formerly known as Dark Cloud has taken the Blue Sox to the playoffs in their first year, the first club to do so benefitting from the expansion of the playoffs. In both cases, there will be a tall order if either club intends to move onto the next round. NLES CAROLINA (106-56) v. LOS ANGELES (94-68) First off, Rough Riders. Can we talk about the job that T. Carlsson has done in Rio Grande? Here's the WORST TEAM in the history of the league. Three playoff appearances in franchise history and no appearances in the Sunset Series. This year, he gets them to the top of the NL regular season so they dodge the Elimination Series and as such, Carolina has to fight for their right to party against upstart Los Angeles. The Kings won the season series 12-10. If the Banditos want to advance, they'll need to win 2 of 3 on the road and win one at home to boot. It'll be a tall order. Carolina boasts 4 pitchers with at least 17 wins, closer Dusty Harrison is probably one of the best in the game with a sub-2.00 ERA and 47 saves. This roster is experience, which is why they've made 13 playoff appearances in 15 years. Johnny Ressano had another strong year (35 HR/.316 AVG) and the bottom line here is, if you're going to beat these guys, you better find a way to score more runs than they do...which will be a challenge against their arms. Still, LA is formidable and experienced despite the expansion moniker. William Messer is likely to get a "warm" reception from Kings fans, as he's a former King that joined the expansion Banditos during their first season in Wichita Falls, Tex. Matt White and Pedro Villegas give LA their own two-headed pitching monster at the top of the rotation and the Banditos were actually 2nd in starters ERA this year. Unfortunately, Carolina is just very very good. They were 1st in BA, OBP, Runs against, Bullpen ERA and Defensive efficiency in the NL this year. They missed 1st place by just one game. This is going to be a tall order for anyone, but the Banditos will have to bring their A game and get a bit of luck if they want to advance. PREDICTION: Carolina in 4 games ALES MEMPHIS (98-64) v. MILWAUKEE (85-78) The AL situation is somewhat similar. We've got a perennial contender (Memphis) facing off against an upstart who had to claw just to get here (Milwaukee) and we'll have to see which side will give. The Smokers are making their 5th straight playoff appearance and claimed the AL pennant just two years ago. This year, they were the best hitting team in the AL, hit the most HRs and were Top 3 and all major categories including Starters ERA, Defensive efficiency and more. TL;DR this team is very good. They won the season series against Milwaukee 14-8, so they've got no problems beating up on the Sox, but it's the playoffs and anything can happen. Still this isn't the invincible Smokers from years ago, they're aging and guys are moving on and so, it's a different iteration of stars now. The 3-4 combo of Dave Cummings and Brian McDaniel accounted for nearly 10 win shares between the two of them this season. When you think of Memphis, you immediately think of their pitching and they've got youngster Gerald Martin boasting 24 wins and veteran Ryan Schaefer doing his part coming into the post-season with a career record of 7-7 with 99 strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Cheeseheads have a motley crue of young and old that have energized a SLOP city that historically has seen good baseball. After 15 years away, they were awarded an expansion club and rewarded with the first expansion club in league history to advance to the post-season in their 1st year. Whether it'll be a short dance or not, though, is another story. The linchpin of this offense is future Hall of Famer Ed Saunders who was released after his franchise player contract was terminated by Carolina last year. He came to Milwaukee amidst big fanfare and for big bucks. His average is down a lot (.223) but he still chipped in nearly 40 HRs (39) and over 100 RBI on the year. SLOP's all-time leader in home runs is now at 772 for his career. Hall of Famer Charlie Taylor decided he wasn't done after last season after all and came back at mid-season to sign with the Blue Sox after years in Memphis. So Smokers fans will have a bittersweet reunion with their Hall of Fame hurler who chipped in with 15 starts for the Blue Crew with mix results (4-6, 4.70 ERA, 78 K) but was probably still better than anyone else they could've thrown out there. They got him for a playoff run and we'll see how he manages to help them in what's likely his swan song. Big money hurler Kosaku Hirata came to Milwaukee and has underachieved. (14-15, 4.26 ERA) but the MKE faithful are hoping he can bring his A-game to the fore at a time when they'll need him to have chance of knocking off the Smokers. The other two mid-season free agents acquired by Milwaukee Dutch deVaal and Habib Sajid didn't have the impact that anyone expected them to, but that's a likely situation when you rely on 40+ year olds to help you to get to the playoffs. If they can blow off the cobwebs and have a strong playoffs, they'll cement themselves into the lore for years to come. That said, Memphis is just too good. If Milwaukee wins a game, I'll be shocked. PREDICTION: Memphis is 3 games. Last edited by Young Drachma : 08-31-2012 at 12:05 PM. |

Taylor and Hirata were my two big pitching losses after last season. Interesting that they're who I'll end up facing in the first round now.

It seems fitting in a year of crazy finishes, that both Elimination Series will come down to a decisive Game 5 in each league.

ALCS Game 6: Winnemucca 2, Milwaukee 1 (WIN wins series 4-2)
NLCS Game 6: Los Angeles 10, Rio Grande 7 (Series tied 3-3) With a shot at the Sunset Series for the first time for either Rio Grande or LA on the line, the Game 7 in the NL will be history making one way or another. Is this the year the Rough Riders claim their first pennant? Will upstart LA manage to be the first of the new wave expansion clubs to get a taste of the Sunset Series? |

WINNEMUCCA CHOO-CHOOS HAVE CLINCHED THEIR 2ND STRAIGHT SUNSET SERIES TITLE! It's their 3rd title in franchise history and 4th AL pennant. It's the 3rd straight title for the Associated League after losing four out of the five previous Sunset Series to the NL dating back to '49. |

It'd been 14 years since a team that wasn't Brooklyn, Chicago or Carolina had represented the NL in the Sunset Series.

I was moving and wasn't able to export through the second half of the season and playoffs.. Not saying it would have made a difference, but it may have, too bad!
