My Top Ten - Cover Songs (What is your top ten?)
Since personal experiences didn't go over as well I'll tone it back a little with the top ten cover songs. The links for this one are youtube links to the songs.
In no particular order... Disturbed - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2 cover) - Takes a decent 80's song and puts a little evil behind it. They have done a few really good covers that I like of 80's songs. Metallica - Astronomy (Blue Oyster Cult cover) - I absolutely love this version. I can't listen to the original after hearing this one. I love the power they bring to the song. Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson cover) - Not a fan of the child molesting freak but there are some great covers of his songs. Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (Michael Jackson cover) - I love the arangement for this one. The David Cook version on AI was also great. Live - I Walk the Line (Johnny Cash cover) - It was an AI cover of this cover that brought it to my attention but this version puts Daughtry's version to shame. Definitely helped build my appreciation for Live. Staind - Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd cover) - I would listen to Aaron Lewis sing the phone book. He has one of the best voices out there. Great version and it's almost like listening to Pink Floyd. Shinedown - Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd cover) - Great, absolutely great. It honor the original and it is one of those songs that is hard to listen to the original after hearing the cover. Brent Smith rocks. Seether - Careless Whisper (George Michaels cover) - Can't stand the original but this version rocks. Aaron Lewis - Turn the Page (Bob Seger cover) - Great live acoustic cover. As I said, he could sing the phone book and I would listen. Disturbed - Shout (Tears for Fears cover) - Another great metal cover of an 80's song. Adds a great attitude to the song. A few extra... Aaron Lewis - Piano Man (Billy Joel cover) - great live cover. Aaron Lewis - Patience (Guns & Roses cover) - another fine live cover. Chris Daughtry - Poker Face (Lada Gaga cover) - Making one of her songs tolerable.

This is a good one. I was actually working on a playlist around this concept, I'll see if I can put together a list with links.

All right, I'm too lazy to go find all the links, so I'll just put some up here. This is certainly not meant to be universally greatest, but the ones that I listen to the most, think are the greatest:
Tori Amos - "Famous Blue Raincoat" - Leonard Cohen Just a stunning version I could listen to forever. Ironically I find her covers dismal usually, she insists on slowing everything down to death, but this is as close to perfect as I've heard. Eva Cassidy - "Fields of Gold" - Sting She takes his fairly cheesy, poppy song and makes something of pure beauty out of it. Eddie Vedder - "Masters of War" - Bob Dylan I'm thinking of his performance at the 30th Anniversary show, in particular. His voice and Dylan's searing lyrics are perfect, take the song to a new level. Shawn Colvin - "This Must Be The Place" - Talking Heads Not quite on the level of the ones above, but she makes this something something else, stripping it down to reveal something really touching inside the beat. Well, that's a first batch, it would take me a while to think of all my favorites and then narrow it down. |

Pretty good list to open the thread, I don't think I could come up with 10 without duplicating several already mentioned but I'll throw in a few more
Dokken - One (Harry Nilsson/3 Dog Night) ... much better than you would probably imagine, from the Erase the Slate album http://youtu.be/obx78oP0bO0 Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics) ... makes it downright creepy http://youtu.be/m6VojYGrnpg Disturbed - Land of Confusion (Genesis) ... well done http://youtu.be/m6VojYGrnpg Avenged Sevenfold - Walk (Pantera) ... respectful http://youtu.be/lw2NwJsywEQ Killswitch Engage - Hold Diver (Dio) ... actually made me give KSE a fresh & more receptive listen http://youtu.be/NR7dG_m3MsI Halestorm - Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) ... talk about taking crap & making something quite good out of it http://youtu.be/cZ96FHEEI7k Stryper - Breaking the Law (Judas Priest) ... Complete with Halford's blessing if you will, one of several nice cuts from a recent all-covers album. Kind of a kick to hear the seminal Christian Metal band do some decidedly atypical material that was influential for them. http://youtu.be/xKEJ5draLcA

Seeing some covered artists that did good covers of their own... Nilsson, Three Dog Night...
Todd Rundgren also has a cover medley of sorts on A Wizard, A True Star where he does this fantastic cover of "The Cool Jerk" in 7/4, so that it's actually jerky. |

When I was flying to Australia, many moons ago, they had a radio channel that played only Australian bands.
One of them, Cat Empire, played a very cool "Hotel California" version sung in French and done more like a New Orleans rag. Gipsy Kings version from Big Lebowski is pretty awesome too. I love the Townes Van Zandt version of "Dead Flowers" at the end of the Big Lebowski too, Van Sant was such a weatherbeaten traveling man that it just compliments his weary "been there" voice. Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" is awesome. ("Hey Joe" is a blistering cover as well) Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is the most haunting cover you'll ever hear. CCR's "Proud Mary" is a notable cover. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" Led Zepplin makes I believe Joni Mitchell's song their own in a monster rock way. I'm not sure you can discuss the 60's without finding a bunch of covers but they really didn't get presented as covers, whereas in the 90's it became the "it" thing to do (Pearl Jam "Masters of War" but I think most know PJ's version of "Last Kiss") Lowell Fulson's "Why Don't We Do It on the Road?" is one of the best Beatle's covers I've heard...though Al Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is pretty good too. I don't think I enjoy the heavy metal covers of songs (I didn't care for Metallica's "Turn the Page"). I like a cover when it's something drastically different but not to the point of near parody ("Sweet Dreams" Marilyn Manson really? People like that version - perhaps I love the original too much). "Waiting for Superman" by Iron and Wine is pretty awesome too.

this selection invalidates your entire list.
In fact this may be the worst abomination of "music" I have ever heard. Then again, my mount rushmore of lead singers has axl, a large space and then two other guys who wish they were axl. |

Is this a joke? I have never heard anyone say that ever.
Don't mean to bust your chops. It's cool that you like that group and everything. BUt that's rather a bold statement to back about ole Axl. I like his singing better on Welcome to the Jungle. He whines too much on Sweet Child for my taste. I did like the female take of it. I prefer TOri Amos' version of the song more than Crow's but Crow's is respectable. Amos does moe of her own version tho. Last edited by CrimsonFox : 05-28-2011 at 01:44 AM. |

Some of the songs on these list would go on my Top 10 Cover Song that did not do the original any justice.

What amuses me most is that it was the Sheryl Crow song that was singled out as the bad one from that list. Certainly not the best cover or song, but on a list with Shatner doing Lucy in the Sky, Britney doing I Love Rock n Roll, Dolly Parton doing Stairway to Heaven, and Michael Bolton doing anything?

No, never heard anyone declare that Axl Rose is a brilliant singer. First time I heard the Crow version I thought it was kinda nice but that changed to merely tolerable. There's no emotion in her voice. But that's really typical of her. She just does bubblegum pop mostly. I've really never heard anyone even talk about Sheryl Crow...and really there's not much to talk about. |

Again TO ME Axl is the prototype front man. No one has ever had the same feel to me. That said I hate him. He destroyed what could have been the gratst rock band of all time. Now thye are just an interesting detour on the story, instead of the story. But his voice...that "whine" that was what no one else could hit. As Slash said about the fist time he head him sing, "I heard this noise that I knew had to be a bad recording because it was impossible that anyone could sing that loud, at that high of a pitch for that long. It was an impossible sound for a human to make, yet he made it every night." |

Sad. Neither is the indie New Year's Day, it's not even on his Facebook page. Here the Locust version of Master and Servant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdHzsfz7alk The Jamil e Uma Noites e Claudia Leitte version of Bizarre Love Triangle is a live version. After hearing by this acoustic Braziallian Band, I couldn't sworn that was the genre it was written for. This version includes the entire set, which lasts less than five minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8Tcp...eature=related

This just made it's way onto my list. I think Anthrax and especially Joey Belladonna don't get the credit they deserve sometimes due to the style of music they usually play. But you could easily plug Belladonna into Journey and they wouldn't miss a beat after hearing this.
