Its always going to be "some" age I suppose but I just have difficulty, seeing the connected society we have these days, in having people publicly shamed & punished for actions that are consensual by all other measures. Obviously coercion, blackmail, physical restraint, etc. are not consensual scenarios.

This thread has felt differently since I fully absorbed lessons the Catholic Church scandals, where many of the victims were younger than what we're talking here but a substantial number weren't. In reading their stories I feel differently than before. I think there's something destructive about having someone in a position of authority and trust influence you sexually.

On Tuesday afternoon 31-year-old band teacher, Bridgett Szychulski, was arraigned and is facing multiple charges.

The reason? It has recently come to light that the married mother of one, who is currently expecting her second child, had sexual relations with one of her middle school students during the 2012 school year. A tip was submitted by an anonymous person to the Pennsylvania Child Abuse Hotline last week.

The Buck’s County DA’s office alleges that the sexual relationship with the boy started when Szychulski sent the student lewd text message photos. The boy, who is now 16-years-old, spoke with investigators and told them about his relationship with the teacher. He stated that they had “initially connected on a mental level” but then things got sexual. They had “at least” three sexual encounters total, two times at the Lenape Middle School in the Doylestown Borough: in her office, in the storage room near her classroom and in her car close to the boy’s house. Their relationship ended with the close of the 2012 school year.

The boy recently texted Szychulski to let her know that he had told a friend about the affair.

After the tip came in last Friday, she was suspended from her job. She is also “prohibited until further notice from coming onto school district property or having any contact with any Central Bucks School District students,” Superintendent David Weitzel wrote in an email to parents.

She is being charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and statutory sex assault. Bail is set for $500,000. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 6.

Officials are asking anyone who might have had inappropriate contact with Szychulski to contact Det. Mark Zielinski at 215-348-6629.

Ahh, was wondering when this would hit this thread. That's my old High School, and I had a couple of classes with Shelly back in the day when we were both students there. The other teacher is a good bit younger. Shelly is the daughter of a long serving judge in the Parish. This story (and a sports related scandal that broke last year involving coaches that were Destrehan grads from my generation) almost makes me want to go home for the next reunion for the weird atmosphere.
